How Malaysians coped under the pandemic- and public health 😷
Tumblr media
P/S : I'm typing this out from my point of view as I experienced the pandemic as an 18 year old who just graduated from high school so basically I was not studying that time, and would play PUBG with friends I barely talk to now until 3a.m. Hopefully I'll still be as insightful.
When Covid-19 hit drastically in Malaysia in 2020, the whole nation went under lockdown which meant people couldn't physically interact with other people who didn't live under the same roof. From here, you can clearly tell how social media fits in this week's post. Call me an optimist but I'm glad to have gone through such a time with social media existing, in the 2nd decade of the 21st Century. I clearly remember a week turning into 3 weeks, to a month, to just 3 whole months of lockdown with no simple way out.
Over the past 2 years, social media has helped a lot in spreading information about the virus which clearly effected the public health. Alongside that, the pandemic effected other concerns too which included people losing their jobs, economic crisis, people's mental health and also the lack of food for households. With social media, it felt as if we weren't totally alone, although most days felt really draining and undetermined.
Tumblr media
Alas in good light, those with access to social media were entertained by applications such as Tiktok, which blew up a lot during the pandemic because of its constant mindless scrolls of videos. I mean, it's not like we could do anything else anyway. There was the Dalgona Coffee trend, a lot of Megan Thee Stallion dances made and the 'I'm bored in the house yeah I'm in the house bored', if you know, you know, I guess!
Okay, I'm steering away a bit, back to public health!
I always say social media is helpful and I see the positive side of it mainly because my insights were all these infographics regarding Covid-19. Day after day they were go viral and with the ever ending use of Instagram, Whatsapp, Twitter and Facebook, people were easily aware about these important details.
Tumblr media
For example, this infographic above guides individuals on how to use a face mask, because I do recall some people that weren't sure which type to buy, how to wear it and even shared their face masks with people. That was honestly so dangerous so I'm glad they came up these things to spread awareness.
Tumblr media
I hope many Malaysians (who see this, lol) remember this image above! Because every single day family group chats would be updated with this on the Covid-19 cases and also all over other social media applications. It was so scary when the numbers kept increasing for positive cases, but we were always hopeful for more recoveries in the days coming.
Tumblr media
There was also this application made for only Malaysians called MySejahtera which was quite successful in my opinion. Before this app was created, individuals who went out had to write down their names, phone number and their body temperature before entering a shopping mall, store, restaurant, or anywhere enclosed to be precise. Unfortunately, there was a plothole to this method as people could get away with writing down and also lie about their credentials. This is where the app comes in.
By August of 2021, most people had already gotten their 2 doses of vaccines. With that, all enclosed areas would restrict those with only 2 full doses to enter. A friend of mine who was interning in Kuala Lumpur that time couldn't even enter Pavillion mall because she had only 1 dose. This was all automatically uploaded and kept in each Malaysian citizen's MySejahtera. In order to enter, all you needed to do was scan the QR Code provided.
Tumblr media
Social Media also enabled for this infographic above to be shared around many Malaysians before getting their vaccine. Even though there wasn't much choice since Malaysia had only fully provided Pfizer for the elderly, AZ and Sinovac for the rest, it was still good to be notified about the other vaccines existing.
Tumblr media
I always love a clean, simple yet informed infographic and the image above did just that. It kept to its main point and conducted it well for people to read and dissect the message. That is, the message above is to spread awareness on places that one may highly likely get the virus.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) Malaysia created several infographics and guides for those who seek help during hard times like the pandemic. I'm not going to go in detail but if you check out their site https://www.who.int/malaysia/emergencies/covid-19-in-malaysia/information/mental-health, you can see that WHO provided for those who have lost their loved once, for the frontliners and even those who were struggling with their mental health.
I wasn't enrolled in Swinburne that time but they had also done a Swinburne's Mental Health awareness week, which is good as a university in Sarawak to promote such importance to students. Checklists and Bingos were a way to engage with a lot of people online so it was quite popular at that time. Here, I scrolled all the way down to @/swinburnesarwak's 2020 posts to find this.
Tumblr media
All and all, it's good to know how Malaysians all over used social media to their fullest in maintaining a safe environment for most during the pandemic. Sharing these correct infographics, articles regarding the virus may seem small but here's the beauty of social media : nothing is ever as small when it's already out there.

"Recent Study Reveals: 73% Increase in Renewable Energy Consumption Across the U.S. in 2021"
New Information Unveiled: Numbers and Data that Matter
New Information Unveiled: Numbers and Data that Matter
Welcome to a world where hard facts and concrete data reign supreme. In this age of information overload, it's vital to sift through the noise and focus on key facts that shape our understanding of the world. Today, we bring you a comprehensive exploration of numerical truths and objective realities, guaranteed to fuel your thirst for knowledge.
"In God we trust, all others must bring data." - W. Edwards Deming
The Power of Numbers
Numbers have an undeniable impact on our lives. They shape the choices we make, the policies we enact, and the direction our society takes. Let's delve into the realm of numbers and uncover their significance.
The World in Numbers
Did you know that the current global population stands at a staggering 7.9 billion? It's a testament to human progress and a challenge to ensure the well-being of each individual. We live in an interconnected world where every action ripples through society.
When it comes to our environment, the figures are equally eye-opening. The average global temperature has risen by 1.2 degrees Celsius since pre-industrial times, with devastating consequences for our planet. We must act urgently to combat climate change and mitigate its effects.
The Digital Landscape
In the digital age, numbers take on a whole new meaning. With nearly 4.7 billion people using the internet worldwide, the power of connectivity is unparalleled. Online platforms have transformed the way we communicate, work, and access information.
Consider this: every minute, 188 million emails are sent, 41 million messages are shared on WhatsApp, and 500 hours of video content is uploaded to YouTube. These numbers highlight the immense scale and impact of our virtual interactions.
Unveiling Concrete Data
Now, let's dive into some specific areas where hard data brings us closer to understanding and addressing important issues.
Health and Medicine
The field of healthcare is driven by hard facts and empirical evidence. Lives are saved and improved based on meticulous research and rigorous analysis. One notable example is the recent breakthrough in cancer treatment, where immunotherapy has shown a 40% increase in long-term survival rates. These numbers provide hope for millions battling this devastating disease.
Furthermore, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has thrust the importance of data into the spotlight. Through accurate tracking and analysis, we can make informed decisions about public health measures, vaccine distribution, and overall pandemic management.
Economics and Finance
In the realm of economics, numbers are the lifeblood of decision-making. Gross Domestic Product (GDP), inflation rates, and unemployment figures shape government policies and business strategies. For instance, a 1% increase in GDP translates to significant economic growth and job opportunities.
At the individual level, personal finance is deeply influenced by numerical analysis. Savings rates, investment returns, and credit scores determine our financial well-being. Understanding these numbers empowers individuals to make informed choices and plan for a secure future.
Technology and Innovation
Now, let's turn our attention to the world of technology and innovation. Cutting-edge advancements rely on data-driven insights and scientific breakthroughs. From artificial intelligence to renewable energy, numbers inform our understanding of what is possible and shape the trajectory of progress.
For example, did you know that the global market for Internet of Things (IoT) devices is projected to reach 75 billion by 2025? This exponential growth opens up vast opportunities for businesses and individuals alike to harness the power of connected devices and revolutionize industries.
The Real-World Application
Concrete data and hard facts hold immense value in our everyday lives. By understanding and engaging with these numbers, we can unlock a world of possibilities and make informed decisions. Let's explore how these insights can be practically applied.
Business Strategy and Decision-Making
For businesses, numerical insights are a game-changer. With data-driven decision-making, companies can identify trends, optimize processes, and tailor their offerings to meet customer needs. Patient Engagement Solutions Market Is Anticipated To Attain Around $70.3 Billion By 2030
The global patient engagement solutions market size is expected to reach USD 70.3 billion by 2030, expanding at a CAGR of 17.7% from 2024 to 2030, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. Key factors fueling the market growth include rising digitalization across healthcare, increasing prevalence of chronic conditions, and technological advancements. COVID-19 pandemic boosted digitalization across healthcare. This, in turn, has fueled the awareness and adoption of patient engagement solutions, thus propelling the market growth.
As healthcare providers were battling the constant upsurge in cases, patients were looking to digital technologies for care delivery and monitoring. This contributed to the market growth. Key companies released multiple COVID-19-related features as part of their patient engagement lineup to enhance their offerings. In December 2020, athenahealth released new features to its athenaOne platform-such as scheduling, workflow, documentation, and reporting capabilities-to enable immediate administration of COVID-19 vaccines as and when they become available.
The necessity of social distancing resulted in increased demand for remote patient monitoring solutions and prerequisite for the precise and timely exchange of patient well-being records. Pandemic has also made healthcare professionals look for alternate methods to traditional processes and systems. As a result, market participants have developed COVID-19-related features in their existing patient engagement solutions. For instance, in June 2020, Orion Health partnered with a network of more than 350 healthcare facilities called Keystone Health Information Exchange to enable real-time automated COVID-19 reporting for improved public health data collection across Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
As per a survey by Twilio, a cloud communications provider and customer engagement, 68% of respondents reported accelerated digitalization in their organizations due to COVID-19. Companies reported easing of barriers at organizational levels, such as getting executive approvals, the need for a clear strategy, and reluctance to replace legacy software. In fact, according to the Chief Product Officer at Mount Sinai Health System, their newly developed text?to?chat platform witnessed a 10x surge in volume due to the pandemic. Growing number of smartphone users around the globe expedited the adoption of digital health technologies across the sector, both from providers and consumers, which, in turn, has augmented the dependability of patients on mHealth apps.
Mobile technology has emerged as a pivotal driver of healthcare's digital and telemedicine revolution. Smartphones, tablets, and wearable devices have simplified access to healthcare support & patient records, elevated the quality of patient care, and streamlined back-office operations & medical training. Leveraging platforms such as WhatsApp for engagement enabled hospitals to manage patient interactions through an accessible communication channel. Solutions such as Easyrewardz Healthcare CRM empower hospital staff to automate patient communication, appointment scheduling, and room availability checks. These advancements are poised to fuel market growth over the forecast period.

Is social media useful spreading information of covid - 19 in Malaysia or home country?
Tumblr media
URL link : https://www.paho.org/en/topics/coronavirus-infections/coronavirus-disease-covid-19/social-media-cards-adolescents-and-covid
Introduction
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we access information, and it's more relevant than ever to explore the role of social media in this context. Social media has emerged as a powerful tool for spreading information related to COVID-19, and we're taking a closer look at its impact in Malaysia.
Social Media as an Information Dissemination Tool
Tumblr media
URL Link : https://www.wheninmanila.com/ol-access-social-media-as-a-tool-for-information-dissemination/
Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp have become primary sources of news and information for many people. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of these platforms has skyrocketed. People turn to social media to get updates on the latest statistics, guidelines, and news related to the virus.
The Benefits
Rapid Dissemination: Social media allows for the rapid sharing of information. Health authorities and government agencies can quickly update the public about new developments and safety measures.
Global Connectivity: It facilitates global connectivity. Information about COVID-19 in one country can easily reach a worldwide audience. This has allowed for the sharing of knowledge, best practices, and solidarity.
User-Generated Content: Social media empowers users to share their experiences, concerns, and ideas. This can foster a sense of community and shared responsibility in the fight against the virus.
The Challenges
Misinformation: The rapid spread of information on social media can lead to the dissemination of false or misleading information. This can be dangerous during a public health crisis.
Information Overload: The abundance of information can be overwhelming, making it difficult for individuals to discern credible sources from unverified ones.
Social Media's Role in Malaysia
Malaysia, like many other countries, has seen both positive and negative effects of social media in disseminating COVID-19 information.
Positive Aspects
Government Engagement: The Malaysian government has actively used social media to engage with the public. Regular updates from the Ministry of Health and Prime Minister's Office have helped keep the population informed.
Community Support: Malaysians have used social media to organize community support groups, share resources, and provide emotional support to those affected by the pandemic.
Public Awareness Campaigns: Social media has been a crucial tool in promoting public awareness campaigns. Information on mask-wearing, social distancing, and vaccination drives has been shared extensively.
Challenges in Malaysia
Misinformation: Malaysia has also faced issues with the spread of misinformation. Rumors and unverified claims have caused confusion and anxiety. Addressing this challenge is an ongoing effort, with government agencies and organizations working to provide accurate information.
Language Barriers: Malaysia is a multicultural and multilingual country, and not all COVID-19 information is accessible to everyone due to language barriers. Translation efforts and multilingual content creation are vital to reach all segments of the population.
Community Initiatives
One remarkable aspect of Malaysia's response to the COVID-19 pandemic has been the emergence of community-driven initiatives on social media.
Volunteer Networks: Numerous volunteer networks have formed through social media platforms. These volunteers assist with tasks such as food delivery, providing information to those in need, and supporting healthcare workers.
Resource Sharing: Malaysians have taken to social media to share information about where to find essential supplies, provide emotional support, and offer guidance on COVID-19 testing and vaccination centers.
Mental Health Support: Recognizing the emotional toll of the pandemic, individuals and organizations have used social media to provide mental health resources, helplines, and online support groups.
Conclusion
Social media has played a significant role in spreading information on COVID-19, both in Malaysia and around the world. While it offers rapid dissemination and global connectivity, it also poses challenges related to misinformation and information overload. To navigate this digital landscape effectively, it is crucial for individuals to critically assess the information they encounter, and for governments and organizations to utilize social media responsibly as a tool for public communication during such crises.

2019
Well, maybe I will start my story from 2019; 2019 was the transition of my adoscence (I think!) i’m turning 25 years old, but my body was very weak, i think it’s starting to adapt and transiscing to adult body haha, I got into hospital maybe like 3 times a year. Maybe it was also because of the trauma of being cheated on in my first relationship in 2017. That time I couldn’t even being alone, I was scared the panic attack hits all of sudden (ptsd much? Lol) but I stand up for myself and I got up again.
In 2019, I met 3 guys in my life. Now there are only one who still stay as my friend.
the guy who came like a thunderstorm.
I met him on Tinder, but we never met in person once until now. He is a funny person, we always joked around each other, and he still helped me calm myself when I got corona vaccine (because actually I was afraid of the side effect!) and he also helped me choosing a backdrop design for corona vaccine event at my company. I really appreciate that. He also gave me support and reassurance when my pet cats were dying. He also loves animals.
In 2020, he resigned from his company and moved to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. We are still friends on social media until now, we even still messaged each other once in a while. He is a good friend. I like him (as a friend).
the guy who stands up in the middle of wild flowers.
To be honest, I was in love with him because he was so tall and kind. He was working in Jakarta only for 1-2 years I think (I don’t know). We had coffee in Jakarta and going around Jakarta together once. But, in June, I asked him to go to a festival together, but he said he couldn’t go, and he opened the truth about him saying he was already engaged with a girl in his country and said he was sorry. I was broken-hearted, and said it was okay, and that his fiance must have been a beautiful girl, and he said yes, she was very beautiful to him. I was sad but I really respected him for saying the truth and that he adored his fiance so much and thought when it’s my turn, having such a boyfriend like him. And yes, I moved on very quickly after that and we got lost contact since then.
the guy who sits with you as the crickets sing.
I met him also from Tinder maybe around September 2019. He was very thin and maybe his height is around 171cm. I first met him in Cikarang with my friend and her husband at a restaurant somewhere in Lippo Cikarang called Mucca. I became his girlfriend only 1 week after meetup (i think that’s kinda too fast though😅). He was a very quiet guy who has a calm aura. The way he talks also very soothing. You can fall asleep listening to him talk, it was so beautiful.
We liked to watch netflix together, and our favorite show is Stranger Things. 2020 hits, and then the walls between us came, it’s covid-19, because of that we can’t meet each other often and in April until September he had to go back to his country because of corona and we went LDR for 6 months. After he was back here, we met again in Cikarang and he bought me a cute gift, a cute black umbrella with hearts pattern, he also bought one for himself, but the mannish one.
We met again 3 days after Christmas near my area and had lunch together eating sushi and sashimi. He also gave me a snack called Jagariko that his parents sent to him for christmas. I am an jagariko addict until now because of him haha. Not long after we met for year-end lunch, in the middle of January 2021, we got covid together lol, and we updated our condition everyday via whatsapp and watch netflix together as our online date during our quarantine.
We dated for 1.5 years, but we broke up due to something that wasn’t very nice to hear. We got into fights when we broke up, and “i hate you” came out from my mouth. Well, he was holding me back though and apologized, but I got very angry and leave him immediately. After 2 months of breakup, he already got a girlfriend who is much younger than us. I was like “my intuition is accurate, right?” while smiling bitterly. Moving on from him was kind of hard though, but not that hard like the first boyfriend. I think I got pretty used to the broken heart situation. I was single and healing myself for a year. Now it’s been 2 years I haven’t heard from him and I guess I’m already okay and have no hard feelings for him anymore.
I learned my lesson, but I think it’s still not enough for my life journey.

How social media has helped us during Covid19 Pandemic.
The way we gather and disseminate information during disasters and pandemics has changed because to social media. People used to rely on traditional media, such print, radio, and television, to learn about catastrophes. Yet, social media has grown into a potent instrument that has aided in the sharing of information, collaboration, and real-time communication between families, social workers, and the government during times of crisis.
Social media's ability to facilitate rapid and effective communication is one of its most important benefits during disasters and pandemics. Families can contact their loved ones and inquire about their well-being through social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp. Families used social media during the COVID-19 pandemic to stay in touch and exchange knowledge about the virus's transmission, precautions to take, and treatments available.
Social media has been quite helpful for social workers in times of need as well. They can interact with vulnerable groups through social media, such as elderly, disabled, and low-income families, and offer them crucial services and resources. Social workers can communicate information, give advice, and organize relief activities with other social workers, volunteers, and organizations through social media platforms.
Similar to this, the government has used social media to better gather information and deal with emergencies. Governments from all across the world used social media during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide information on vaccination campaigns, lockdown procedures, and viral updates. In order to track the virus's transmission and perform targeted interventions, they also used social media to gather information and insights from residents, such as symptoms, travel histories, and contacts.
Social media has a number of benefits over traditional media during disasters and pandemics. First off, compared to traditional media sources, it offers real-time updates that are more current and accurate. Users of social media can post updates, images, and videos about the situation locally, giving a more complete and nuanced view of the issue.
Second, social media makes it easier for stakeholders like families, social workers, and the government to directly communicate and work together. Users of social media platforms can interact with one another and instantly share knowledge, resources, and solutions. This has made it possible to respond to emergencies more quickly and effectively, which has improved the situation for the impacted populations.
Last but not least, social media is more approachable than traditional media, particularly for vulnerable groups like seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income families. The majority of social media sites are accessible for free via cellphones, which are more affordable than more conventional media outlets like TVs, radios, and newspapers.
In conclusion, social media has completely changed how we gather and disseminate information during disasters and pandemics. It has made it possible for families, social workers, and the government to communicate, work together, and respond in a faster and more efficient manner. Social media is a crucial tool in times of crisis since it has many advantages over traditional media, like accessibility, direct communication and collaboration, real-time updates, and many others.

Are you all zoomed out? How to handle Zoom fatigue during the holiday season . Back to video
--
Author: Jaigris HODSON, Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Royal Roads University
Article content It's official. Across North America and most of Western Europe, the Christmas holidays will be quite different this year. We've been instructed to use online tools to share the holiday spirit with loved ones since the second wave of pandemics. In fact, we may all find ourselves declining to participate in in-person gatherings for the holidays in order to limit the spread of COVID-19 before the release of the vaccine.
Content of the article Unfortunately, however, we've already been doing almost everything digitally from our homes for months, and the majority of us are becoming tired of the whole thing and for good reason.
So, do we just forget about the holidays altogether? Or do we look for new ways to make the holidays memorable? My research into digital literacy reveals ways that we can be connected this season of giving even when we are physically apart.
Video is for everything
The first few months of the pandemic were full of Zoom fever. People were also zooming to work, happy hour and board game nights, and other events. Many felt like they had hit the wall. Zoom fatigue is real. And recent research suggests that all the efforts to connect with video chat platforms (Zoom, Skype, Teams and others) could be dragging us out.
Article content While you consider how to spread joy during the holidays, you're hoping to figure out ways to step away from everything that is done via video chat. Instead, you should learn from the ways that digital natives utilize digital communication tools, and enjoy the holiday season on different platforms, as I'll explain below.
Different platforms for different social groups
My research shows that teenagers tend to separate their use of social media platforms based on their relationships with those platforms. For example, teenagers use Facebook to keep in touch with family and teachers, yet they use Snapchat with their friends. They play massive multiplayer games.
This kind of engagement with digital technology makes sense for everyone. Zoom is an excellent tool to work with. However, Zoom users may also be interested in exploring other technologies to connect with their loved ones and family. You can use apps like Rave, Airtime, or Teleparty to share your favorite movies synchronously with your friends. Or , you could connect with family and friends virtually through games like Animal Crossing, World of Warcraft, or Minecraft.
Article content Get digitally imaginative
There are many ways to connect with your loved ones and spread joy during the holidays. There are many ways to bring joy to the holidays, but these are some of my favorite ways.
Share and curate a music playlist. Research has proven that sharing music is connected to friendship. You can create a holiday music playlist and share it with your friends on a streaming platform such as Spotify. This could bring you closer as you order food online, play games and share holiday-themed memes with your WhatsApp Group.
Text messages The 2016 University of Minnesota study found that text messages are viewed as more intimate and warm than emails. Keep in touch with your loved ones throughout the holiday season by sending frequent text messages. Sending gifs or emojis as your text messages can improve your emotional connection with your loved ones.
Article content Host a virtual New Years's Ceilidh on YouTube. A Christmas-themed ceilidh in Scotland is a Christmas tradition where family and friends get together to tell stories, dance, and sing songs. You can make an online celebration with the people you love using a site like YouTube. Every participant can upload a video of themselves singing songs, telling a story, reciting a poem or playing a musical instrument. Then, you can curate the videos into playlists that the group can enjoy while eating their Christmas cookies. Extremecraft.net After all, research shows that YouTube is a place where communities are created and is also an area where videos are shared.
Tune in, turn on the radio, and then scream
The holidays can be stressful, and you'll be attracted by every virtual invitation, but you must spend time away from your devices. Some universities recommend that their doctoral students put their own digital detox times in order to combat Zoom fatigue.
Article content Sometimes, you'll want to use a videoconferencing platform to recreate an evening meal or cocktail party, so be sure you avoid fatigue from Zoom by balancing your video chatting with the other ways to connect described above.
While you are away from your computer, don't forget the old-fashioned ways to keep in touch. Send cards, call the phone, or mail gifts to your loved ones. Sometimes, these are the most memorable because we experience them so rarely in our hyper-connected world.

Learn and discuss the various kinds of Covid variations at the 12th International Nursing, Healthcare, and Patient Safety Conference.
Tumblr media
As modifications to the genetic code (either from genetic mutations or viral recombination) take place during genome replication, viruses like SARS-CoV-2 continue to evolve. A lineage is a collection of genetically distinct viral strains that have a common ancestor. A variety of the SARS-CoV-2 viruses has one or more mutations that set it apart from other variants. Recombinant means combining genetic material from two separate variants to form a new variant. Multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants have been identified throughout this pandemic in the United States and throughout the world, as was to be expected. Scientists evaluate the genetic differences between viruses to find variants (including recombinants) and how they are related to one another in order to inform local outbreak investigations and comprehend national trends.
Inspirational speakers and insider knowledge are presented at a gathering where the most recent studies and trends are debated. Register to talk at the CME/CPD accredited 12th International Nursing, Healthcare, and Patient Safety Conference, which will be held in Dubai, UAE from July 25-27, 2023, and demonstrate your expertise to the delegates from all over the world.

Different coronaviruses
Since viruses are always evolving, a new strain or version of the virus may appear. Typically, a variation has no impact on the virus's functionality. But occasionally they alter its behaviour.
Globally, researchers are monitoring changes to the COVID-19-causing virus. Their work is assisting scientists in understanding how COVID-19 mutations might affect your health, whether some of them spread more quickly than others, and how well various vaccinations might protect you from them.
How Many Different Coronaviruses Exist?
Coronaviruses have been around for a while. These numerous viruses have been around for a very long period. Many of them have a wide range of diseases that they can spread, from a simple cough to serious respiratory ailments.
There are a number of coronaviruses that can infect people, including the new (or "novel") one that causes COVID-19. Animals have likely been using it for some time. A virus from animals can occasionally infect humans. Scientists believe that is what took place here. In other words, although this virus is not new to the globe, it is new to people. In 2019, when it began to sicken humans, researchers identified it as a novel coronavirus. These strains are known as SARS-CoV-2 by experts.
How Do Variations Occur?
All of the genetic material in coronaviruses is contained in a substance called RNA (ribonucleic acid). While RNA and DNA share some similarities, they are not the same.
In order to spread, viruses need to adhere to your cells, enter them, and generate copies of their RNA. The RNA changes if there is a copying error. These changes are known as mutations in science.
These alterations take place haphazardly and by mistake. As viruses replicate and spread, this is a typical side effect. The alterations could have little to no impact on a person's health because they are random. Sometimes they can even spread illness. For instance, the fact that influenza viruses mutate each year is one of the reasons you need an annual flu vaccination. It's unlikely that the flu virus circulating this year is the same one that did so last year.
A virus's variant will increase in frequency if it undergoes a chance mutation that makes it simpler to infect individuals and the virus spreads.
Bottom line: All viruses, including coronaviruses, can evolve over time, and the pandemic has already been aided by a number of varieties. The Omicron variant is the only one on the CDC's list of Variants of Concern (VOCs) as of May 2022.
The Omicron Variant: What Is It?
Omicron variant (B.1.1.529): It was discovered for the first time in samples that were taken on November 11, 2021, in Botswana. On November 24, 2021, experts in South Africa informed the WHO for the first time about the Omicron variety. After an unexpected rise in COVID-19 infections, they found the variation.
This classification denotes that the variant may be more contagious, more severely ill, and maybe less responsive to treatments or immunisations. But more data is required for researchers to verify these factors. Early research indicates that, in comparison to other variants, the Omicron variant increases the likelihood of reinfection.
Current COVID-19 PCR testing can successfully detect Omicron patients. The S gene dropout is one of the three target genes that experts discovered one specific PCR test fails to detect in Omicron-infected individuals. As a result, these tests can more quickly detect this variety than they could with earlier spikes and can precisely mark positive Omicron cases.
Even if you are fully immunised, breakthrough infections with the Omicron type are reportedly conceivable. The COVID-19 vaccination and boosters are nevertheless still useful in reducing fatalities, serious sickness, and hospitalisations.
"Stealth" variant of the Omicron (BA.2): As contrast to the original Omicron variation, BA.1, scientists refer to it as Omicron BA.2. Scientists initially believed BA.2 would eventually disappear because it wasn't as contagious as BA.1. That did not occur, and beginning in January 2022, BA.2 seemed to be at least as simple to broadcast as BA.1.
Sub variant BA.2.12.1 of the Omicron: It accounted for over 43% of COVID-19 infections in the United States as of early May 2022. Early studies indicate that it is disseminating more quickly than other Omicron sub variants. The CDC is investigating how it spreads as well as how well existing medications and the COVID vaccine combat it.
Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 versions: First discovered in South Africa, these. According to preliminary study, they have "rapidly supplanted" BA.2 there. The CDC classified BA.4 and BA.5 as variations of concern as of May 2022.
Alpha of Earlier Coronavirus Variants (B.1.1.7): Experts discovered gene mutations in COVID-19 cases in persons in southeast England toward the end of 2020. Since then, reports of this variety have come from various nations, including the US. According to scientists, these alterations could increase the virus's transmissibility by up to 70%, increasing the ease with which it can spread. This variation has been associated with a greater risk of death in several studies, but the evidence is weak.
Beta (B.1.351): Other nations, such as South Africa and Nigeria, are where this variety was initially discovered. Although the Beta variety doesn't seem to worsen sickness, it does tend to propagate more quickly than the original virus.
Gamma (P.1): Experts discovered this COVID-19 variation in Brazilian visitors to Japan in January 2021. It started appearing in the United States towards the end of that month. In comparison to prior viral strains, the Gamma version seems to be more contagious. Additionally, it might be able to spread infection to COVID-19 survivors. According to a report from Brazil, a 29-year-old lady contracted this variation following a previous coronavirus infection a few months earlier.
Delta (B.1.617.2): In December 2020, this variation was discovered in India. Mid-April 2021 saw a sharp increase in instances as a result. Currently, 178 nations, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and all of Europe, have this extremely contagious form. In the US and the UK, it is the prevalent strain.
Two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine were 88% effective two weeks after the second dosage, according to a study on the COVID-19 vaccine's efficacy against this variation.
The UK-only AstraZeneca vaccine was 60% effective after two doses.
3 weeks after the initial dosage, just 33% of the two vaccines are still effective.
Mu (B.1.621): In Colombia in January 2021, experts discovered the COVID-19 variation (pronounced m'yoo). Since then, Mu outbreaks have been recorded in South American and European nations.
According to the CDC, Mu peaked in the United States in June 2021, when it made up fewer than 5% of variants spreading across the nation. It had been rapidly falling as of the start of September.
Scientists are still tracking Mu. The COVID-19 vaccination and our immune systems may be less effective against this version. Although preliminary evidence reveals some parallels to the Beta form, we still need more studies to be sure.
R.1: It was first discovered by scientists in a variety of nations, including Japan. In Kentucky, a nursing facility experienced an outbreak in March 2021 when an unvaccinated healthcare worker spread the illness to roughly 45 other staff members and residents.
BF.7: According to data from the California-based Scripps Research Institute, variations with the same genetic make-up as BF.7 have previously been discovered in around 90 nations before February 2021, prior to the current Covid increase in China. BF.7, a branch of the BA.5 sub-variant of Omicron, still makes up less than 0.5% of samples globally. According to experts, it is unlikely to have a significant impact in the world because the vast majority of people there have dual protection to both spontaneous illness and vaccinations.
Seize your spot for the #12NHPSUCG, which will take place July 25-27, 2023 in Dubai, UAE, and is CME/CPD accredited.
