went out with my parents for a drive around today and we listened to 'Synchronicity' (police album) can't believe its 40 years old... and I'm 22. Lol. it's almost double my age. Crazy. Good timing too... we listened to it all. and the host interviewed the legendary drummer Steward Copeland (yes, the same guy who composed the PS1 Spyro games' soundtracks)

when I try to describe The Amazing Devil to people I know the correct genre answer is "indie folk" but that doesn't really capture them enough? I prefer "magical pirate adventure music"

you know, I think the real genius of TAD is that they can have lines like "and I'll sing silence and ask my glass of wine for guidance", which is just... so lovely and poignant and poetic and managed to perfectly capture about five different emotions in a single line, and lines like "I'm gonna go home and dress my cat up like Batman 'cause he's awesome like me" not just in the same album, but in the same goddamn song.

#anyways go listen to The Amazing Devil pretty much all their songs have that same interplay of poetic and mundane #there's an entire argument to be made and essay to be written #that that contrast between the mundane and the fantastic #the domestic and the epic #is what the entire album of The Horror and the Wild is about and is exploring #the amazing devil #music

The fact that Taylor has released the same amount of albums under Universal/Republic in less than half the time when she was with Big Machine, really makes me wonder about all of the potential things she could’ve done if instead of having to fight tooth and nail for everything, they had granted her more creative freedom and trusted her.

#adding these clarifying tags since this post has gained some traction #the point of this post isn’t ‘omg she could’ve released so many more albums!!’ it’s about the creative choices she could’ve made on existing #projects either in terms of sound or collaboration or what #it’s about the difference in trust the two labels had/have in her #bmg did have a lot of trust and belief in her but as she grew wildly popular there was an effort to rein her in #she’s at a point with umg where she knows they have trust in her that she’s comfortable with releasing music on her own terms #her gut instincts are usually spot on and toward the end of the relationship bmg started to push back #her relationship with them wasn’t horrible from start to end there were a lot of good moments it just started to crumble at the end #taylor swift #midnights #like the difference is absolutely crazy #she’s been with umg/republic for only four/five years and was with BMG for 11 and has released the same number of albums #okay forgive me it’s like 7 am but it’s more like 13-15 years #obviously she didn’t really have to start fighting for stuff until red/1989 but it really makes me wonder #and how she talked in the long pond sessions about being nervous and scared to turn folklore in and their confidence is like 180 from BMG #like they have completely trusted in her and let her do whatever she wants to amazing results #🗒 #this got notes*

When I say The Amazing Devil is my favorite band I don't mean it's my top band among many I mean it's the only band I listen to at all. They ruined me for other music. I want everything I listen to to be just as dramatic and vocally emotive and narratively focused and lyrically intricate, but I can't find anything else that scratches the itch and believe me I've tried. 😩Want to know what comes the closest for me, weirdly enough? Three years ago, I listened to an album not knowing that it would alter the very chemistry of my brain. It sounds absurd, I know, but that doesn't make it any less true. Happy Anniversary to the absolute triumph, the crowning achievement, the magnum opus that is The Horror and the Wild. fig faeth albums and why:

burn towns get money (single): only song that makes sense to have been created before sophomore year

significant figures (album): right after they get home from spring break. fig had all of those cooking i swear

their ep (EP): max casson’s spring break: i believe in you! playlist. while fabian’s dumping all of his gold in the finale part 2 fig says she has an ep in the works and i want to believe it’s this one. the title’s a double meaning: it’s for the bad kids but it also sounds like therapy so :D

walk through hell (album): in spring break part 2 lola talks about the archdevil tour and i’m choosing to believe it’s this one. there’s a lot of fire symbolism and phoenix stuff and fig going hey we’re a bit more traumatized, but they drag fabian and/or riz onstage for at least 1 concert and that’s where fig gets the idea for

significant figures 2.0 (album): BOP. BELOVED IT’S SO GREAT. they drag everyone to come sing their songs to at least one concert. fig sings hey kid disguised as Kalina and riz is sufficiently creeped out. it’s great.

titles (album): my beloved i will summon you into existence. i choose to believe until proven otherwise the night yorb is like. not as big a threat as it seems (think a lighter vokodo from critical role. not great but not bad) and they clear it out by winter break. the album gets released the day after fig’s birthday.
