TOTP: Gary Green x Gideon
my NOTP too | I don’t ship it | it’s okay | I ship it hard | OTP
Firstly I don’t like the idea of them together at all. It’s not an appealing ship dynamic to me. Weird friends? Absolutely. But romantic/sexual? No.
Then we have the issue that Gideon is at least 75% of the Born Sexy Yesterday trope which makes the whole thing gross to me. And despite being an A.I., she’s also been weirdly sexualized for a while, even before she was suddenly human? Whatever her situation with R*p was was similarly weird and uncomfortable, but with fewer sketchy implications.
It also feels like: “We have a woman. What do we do with her?” “I know! Love Interest!” Like why would you even have a woman who wasn’t a love interest? What would be the point? We’ve long established that The CW doesn’t like women.
And Gary… so this bothers me for two reasons.
One, putting him with Gideon feels like it’s along the same line of thinking from the writers that led to him being retconned into an alien: he’s odd. He’s clearly coded neurodivergent. What should we do with him? Who could possibly like and relate to a weirdo like him? A Robot! Yes I know Gideon is a lot more than that but I’m making a point here. It’s about the othering and dehumanization of ND people.
And two, The CW in general and the Arrowverse in particular hates queer men. It just does. It accepts Ava/Sara because they’re both conventionally attractive blue-eyed blondes and it’s “hot” to see them together.
They will settle for making in-universe jokes about some of the queer male characters. It will throw us a bone occasionally in the form of a single line of dialogue or a solitary acknowledgment of their attraction to other men. But no relationships! Nothing that casual homophobic viewers will have to sit through and watch every week. We’d hate to scare them away!
John/Desmond was past-tense, their s*x scene was dark/blurred/shown in flashback, brief, and minimalist. I’m not even going to touch on the decisions they made about Ray/Nate. Leo doesn’t count because he was barely on the show. Now we have Gwyn because they knew we’d flip our shit if they replaced John with a heterosexual. But for good measure they gave him a dead love-interest and Catholic Guilt about his attraction to men.
Gary/John had mentions of a brief affair, but not one they would show on screen. Their kisses all played for laughs, their attraction played for laughs, Gary saying he “missed” being with John was also played for laughs/break of tension in a scene where John was already in a relationship with a woman so no real threat there. And half of the content for queer!Gary was only because Matt and Adam decided to throw the fandom a bone, not the writers. After John, it was Mona, now Gideon. For John it was Zari. All long-term. Just to help everyone forget about having to see men together.
This is absolutely not me saying I only want to see bisexual male characters in relationships with other men. This is me saying the network will only allow those relationships to be with women while their attraction to men will 90% of the time be treated as a joke, and I’ve noticed, and I’m not okay with it.
