Someone on Twitter asked who was the British politician who has harmed the British people the most. Of course all the answers were modern politicians - the earliest suggestion was James Callaghan. Looking further back in history, who were the really bad British politicians?
In order to not answer this with a long list of "History's greatest colonialist monsters," I'm going to focus on just the ones who had a negative effect on "the British people," and in order to not answer that with a long list of "the history of English oppression of the Irish," I'm going to focus on just harm done to "the people who lived in what is currently the U.K." I am well aware that this is highly restrictive, but I don't have the time to write a complete history of Britain.
So who's on my shortlist?
Tumblr media
Pitt the Younger. Fought the Napoleonic Wars on the backs of the poor while violently suppressing any dissent with a police state. He passed the Treason Act of 1795 to criminalize dissent, the Seditious Meetings Act of the same year to criminalize public assemblies, spied on pretty much anyone who wasn't an arch-Tory, suspended the writ of habeus corpus, and passed the Combination Act of 1799 to criminalize trade unions. In a just world, would have died on a guilottine in Trafalgar Square.
Tumblr media
Lord Liverpool. In the wake of the Peterloo Massacre which he was absolutely responsible for, passed the Six Acts to allow the government to search people's houses for arms without a warrant, arrest and transport people for owning weapons or attending a meeting that was deemed to involve unlawful military drilling, reduced due process, shut down all public meetings that involved politics or religion, arrest and transport anyone who wrote anything that criticized the government or Christianity, and heavily tax and impose bonds on newspaper publishers. In a just world, the Cato Street Conspirators would have exercised better tradecraft and assassinated him and his entire government.
Tumblr media
Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington. Followed up his victory in the Napoleonic Wars by fighting a war against the British people. Arch Tory bastard, adamantly opposed any political Reform that would enfranchise ordinary people, and opposed Jewish emancipation while supporting Catholic emancipation. To be honest, I wish the mob had torched Apsley House with him inside when they had the chance.
As for the runners-up?
Bonar Law, Stanley Baldwin, and Ramsay fucking MacDonald for dropping the Geddes Axe and then subjecting British workers to twenty years of crippling austerity and repression.

A Summer Picnic, Henford-On-Bagley ― Late summer, 1811
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Arabella: Miss Milbourne! It's to lovely to see you in the countryside again with the whole of the Ton this year. We have missed you in years past. Charlotte: Oh, um, thank you Miss Wellesley. I have certainly missed the fresh air.
Tumblr media
A: Mmm, I'm certain you have, considering all that time you've spent cooped up like a hen with your gentlemen callers. C: P-pardon me?
Tumblr media
A: Oh, I'm simply saying that I've noticed one certain gentleman who makes a frequent visit to your home nearly every day. Tell us, Miss Milbourne, is there something the Ton should know? Are you compromised?
Tumblr media
[whispers, gasps]
Tumblr media
Margareth: Arabella, that was hardly appropriate―
Tumblr media
C: Why-I, n-no. No of course not. A: That is certainly not what I have been told.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
M: Arabella that was unbelievably uncalled for! A: It's not my fault that she's a lady-bird. I was just warning the gentlemen. M: You know that isn't true.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Edward: Charlotte! Wait, Char― C: I just want to leave.
Tumblr media
E: Do not listen to Arabella Wellesley, she's just a jealous, mean-spirited girl. She is just in envy of you and your talents―
Tumblr media
C: How can I be better than Arabella Wellesley when you are courting her?
Tumblr media
C: I'm not blind, Edward. I've watched you all summer, dance and smile and laugh with her when you didn't think I was looking. You cannot speak to me of us and our past when you go back and prepare a future with her!
Tumblr media
E: Charlotte... I... I'm sorry. C: It does not matter. I am returning back to Sable Square to continue my summer in Henford, and then I am to leave.

Since the beginning of October, I’ve visited so many great bookstores, not only for events but also to sign stock. Which means you can buy signed copies of A Scatter of Light, Last Night at the Telegraph Club, and some of my other books too at many places across the U.S. Some of these bookstores will even ship internationally. And the holidays are coming! I humbly suggest that a signed book (by me) would make a great gift for that girl you want to impress! Here’s where you can get them:
Porter Square Books — This is the only place where you can get personalized copies. All you have to do is add your personalization request (e.g. “To Aria”) in the comments field when you order. Be sure to order from PSB by Dec. 2 if you want a personalization! After that I will go to the store to personalize them.
Signed copies of my books are also available from:
Harvard Book Store (Cambridge, MA)
Belmont Books (Belmont, MA)
The Silver Unicorn Bookstore (Acton, MA)
Wellesley Books (Wellesley, MA)

"Of all the wars I have waged
To propel my nations might
For this I'll be remembered
From now 'till the end of time
If To the victor goes the spoils
I may die an impoverished man
For in the end irony
Has dealt the cruelest hand"
- Waterloo by Iced Earth
----------------------------------------
On this day, 208 years ago, the battle of Waterloo was fought. This engagement was part of the Hundred Days campaign, in which the newly returned French Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte, attempted to regain control of France and secure his reign. Fearing another attempt by Napoleon to conquer Europe, various European nations formed the Seventh Coalition.
At first, the tides of war seemed to be in Napoleon's favor as he defeated a Prussian force in the battle of Ligny on June 16. Meanwhile, on that same day, Marshal Ney, commanding the left wing of the army, defeated an Anglo-Dutch force at the battle of Quatre Bras.
Napoleon would then detach the right wing of his army to pursue to retreating Prussians, while he and the army reserves joined Marshal Ney's left wing to pursue the Anglo-Dutch force. This latter force, under the command of Sir Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, would eventually halt their march on a ridge south of the town of Waterloo. There, Wellington, a commander who is a master of defense, decided to hold his ground and prevent Napoleon marching on to Brussels.
On June 18, the battle of Waterloo would be fought. During the day, Napoleon desperatelt tried to break through the Anglo-Dutch lines. This resulted in many famous engagements, such as the fight to capture the farm house at Hougoumont, the charge of the British heavy cavalry, the fight for the La Haye Sainte farm house, and the charge of the French cavalry against the British squares.
However, by the afternoon, a new force was approaching the battlefield. It turned out to be the Prussians. Managing to outmarch the French army's right wing, the Prussian force followed the sound of the guns and soon began to outflank Napoleon.
In one last bid to break the Anglo-Dutch lines, Napoleon threw in his Imperial Guard, which included his veteran and elite Old Guard. (Contrary to popular belief, the Old Guard did not directly engage against the Anglo-Dutch lines and just acted as a reserve behind the Middle Guard)
The Imperial Guard was Napoleon's last chance to secure victory, or at least a draw. But it failed. The Guard failed to break the line and Napoleon had to be persuaded to abandon the field, as Anglo-Dutch and Prussian forces closed in on his disintrigating army.
It was over for Napoleon. Eventually he would be caught and would be exiled to the lonely Atlantic island of Saint Helena.

I love my Wellesley Mom's son.
Bro is 15 (16 in Sept.) And he was telling me a story and said "some old 30 something year old lady" during it and I my eyes were bugging. I looked at him and said "Max! Don't say your 30s are old! I just turned 30!"
Max looks at me square in the eye and goes "You're 30?! You look like you just graduated from college."
Bless his heart 😂

How to Ensure Snow Stays Off Your Roof Safely
Tumblr media
The winter months in New England may offer icy conditions, an abundance of snow, as well as bright, sunny days when the warmth of the sun tempts people to go skiing, ice skating, or sledding outside.
Although playing outside on snowy days is enjoyable and newly fallen snow is breathtakingly beautiful, property owners need to be mindful that too much of the white stuff might cause their roofs to collapse.
The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety states that the average residential roof should be capable of withstanding 20 pounds of snow per square foot before it becomes strained (IBHS).
The Town of Wellesley and the Wellesley Police Department would like to offer the following tips on how to safely keep snow off your roof:
For snow removal off your pitched roof, use a snow rake, which is readily available at most hardware stores.
Work your way into the roof starting at the perimeter.
Try to shave the snow down to 2 or 3 inches rather than removing all of it from the roof, which might harm your shingles.
It's crucial to remember that any metal object that comes in contact with a power line might carry electricity. Additionally, using metal tools can hurt your roof more.
Throw the snow off the side of your house while clearing snow from a flat roof.
Additionally, remove any snow from the direct vents since a blocked direct vent might result in a deadly buildup of carbon monoxide inside your house. Make sure your carbon monoxide detector and doorbell camera are operational. If the CO detector sounds, leave the house right once, and then dial 911..

Intelligence Squared U.S. Wins Adweek’s Best Podcast Event In 2022
Bona fide debates are so rare today that they are often recognized when done and done exceedingly well. That’s why Adweek’s 2022 Podcast of the Year Awards, “Best Podcast Event” was awarded to nonprofit media organization Intelligence Squared U.S.’s recent episode debating the question “Is Cancel Culture Toxic?”
Adweek wrote, “Reaching more than 200,000 unique listeners, the live event brought together widely respected thinkers who didn’t simply pander to partisan allegiances, but endeavored to share their point of view in hopes of arriving at a clearer understanding of the phenomenon.”
The “Is Cancel Culture Toxic?” episode featured Russian Chess Grandmaster Garry Kasparov and Freethink co-founder Kmele Foster arguing Yes against Washington Post columnist Karen Attiah and Wellesley professor Erich Hatala Matthes arguing No. It is available to listen to at the Intelligence Squared website (which also features video of the taping) and on all podcast apps.
The award follows another milestone for Intelligence Squared U.S.: After years of airing as a periodic special on public radio, the show can now be heard weekly on public radio stations across the country (including WNYC every Saturday). Find more info on the new weekly radio show and a list of upcoming episodes here.
Episodes will come out every Friday in podcast apps and air soon after every week on a range of public radio stations across the country, with more being announced regularly.
The programming schedule for the next two months is as follows:
August 5: Should We Eat More Processed Foods?
August 12: Should We Indict Trump?
August 19: Is Cancel Culture Toxic?
August 26: Should We Do Away With the SAT?
September 2: Will AI Do More Harm than Good?
September 9: Activism in Healthcare
September 16: Can We Separate Art from the Artist?
September 23: Is Amazon Good for Small Business?
September 30: Will Dollar Dominance Last?
To mark the launch of the new weekly show for public radio, Intelligence Squared U.S. will take the stage live on August 31st at PRPD Public Radio Content Conference in New Orleans to debate a timely question: “Is public radio still relevant in a digital world?”
“In our increasingly divided world, Americans deserve a contempt-free zone for hearing both sides of the issues,” said Clea Conner, CEO of Intelligence Squared U.S. “We are thrilled to offer our program on a weekly basis to help expose public radio listeners to a range of ideas on some of the most important questions of our time.”
The program was made possible in part by a generous grant from the Laura and Gary Lauder Family Venture Philanthropy Fund, contributing up to $1.25 million over four years to initiate the Debate for Understanding program.
“The ability to consider and learn from each other’s perspectives is crucial for our democracy to function,” said Laura Lauder. “We are thrilled to support Intelligence Squared U.S.’s new program, Debate for Understanding, to enable all Americans to explore the most pressing issues of our time through debates conducted with civility and respect.”

Qualifying for the Boston Marathon
Tumblr media
Inspired by the Olympic Marathon, the Boston Marathon was established in 1897 and has occurred annually ever since. The first race spanned from Ashland, Massachusetts, to Boston, attracting 15 participants. In 1924, the organizers extended the course to align with the Olympic distance of 26.2 miles. Over the decades, runners from across the globe have flocked to participate in this marathon, solidifying its position as one of the most renowned races worldwide.
The marathon's route begins at Hopkinton, with runners passing through Ashland, Framingham, and Wellesley and mountainous areas like Newton as they make their way toward the finish line at Copley Square in Boston. The course features tough terrains and variable road conditions. It begins with a slight downhill slope, but the terrain becomes more demanding as runners approach the hills around Newton. One particularly challenging section for runners is Heartbreak Hill, known for its steep incline.
The Boston Marathon typically permits 20,000-38,000 total participants annually, depending on safety and other factors.
Official entry into the marathon requires attaining a qualifying time at the Boston Qualifiers. The qualification standards vary by gender and age group and are updated periodically. Cutoffs range from three hours for 18- to 34-year-old men to three-and-a-half hours for same-aged women. Older participants have slightly longer qualifying times, with some exceeding four hours. Depending on application volume, the marathon subtracts from the qualifying time a "cutoff time," which lowers the qualifying time. For the 2024 race, the "cutoff time" is 5:29, meaning the time a man between the ages of 18 and 34 would have had to run a 2:54:31 marathon or faster to be accepted into the race.
Registration for this marathon typically opens in September. Qualified runners register online by submitting their qualifying time details and paying a registration fee. For the 2024 race, the registration fee was $230 for residents of the United States; the fee is slightly higher for residents of other countries.
The Boston Athletic Association (BAA) prioritizes runners with the fastest qualification times, proceeding with the selection until they reach capacity. Runners have the option to purchase race insurance, which allows them to be refunded the registration fee if they cannot participate due to unforeseen circumstances. Once registration closes, the BAA verifies that all submitted times meet the criteria, makes a final decision, and sends out acceptance notices to the selected runners.
Besides achieving a qualifying time, runners can enter the Boston Marathon via charity qualification. Runners who take this option can receive entry into the marathon by committing to raising a specified amount for a chosen charity. Each year, at least 30 charities receive guaranteed entry spots for fundraisers. In 2019, charity entrants reportedly raised a record $38.7 million.
Given its major marathon status internationally, the Boston Marathon offers substantial cash prizes for top finishers. In 2023, the men's and women's overall winners each received $150,000, with second place taking home $75,000. Top finishers in the masters division (а category designed for participants over 40) won $5,000, while wheelchair racers received $25,000 for first place. There was also prize money awarded across several paralympic categories.

Week 8 technical shoot
For this weeks technical shoot we were required to capture 28 photos of a location while standing within a 1 metre square. I shot in 2 places - under and on top of the foot bridge over Wellesley street. The perspective from below the bridge was interesting as the lines the bridge overhead created were very long and dynamic. Above, I was able to capture the cars below (I tried a slower shutter speed for this), behind the signs on the bridge which had graffiti on them, the railing of the bridge which provided framing and interesting lines, shadows of the railing, vanishing points of the bridge and in general a higher perspective. I found this exercise really helpful and interesting as it made me realise how much potential lies in one square metre of space. It forced me to look deeper into the location so I noticed things that I normally wouldn't such as the variety of shadows, shapes and compositions that I can capture in such a small area. I definitely want to apply this exercise to future shoots that I do.

One metre square class exercise
For this in class exercise me and my partner went to the bridge on Wellesley st east between albert park and uni we stood in a one meter sqaure adius to make 24 unique photographs. i played around with zoom and how this can create distance without me myself moving. i also tried to capture everything around me so i moved to each direction to create a different view. i thought about light and different camera angles and wanted to play around with different techniqes to create new images. i also had a small play around with some in camera settings.
