Tangled up in blue- 2
Tumblr media
warnings- drugs lol
One month and six weeks prior-
Keeping herself busy when Josh was gone was no easy task for Penny. She tried her hardest to focus on work, sitting in front of rows of developed film, feeling burned out. There was no good reason for this feeling, simply that she was lonely. Sighing, she thought of the only thing to relax her and calm her mind without Josh, weed.
Her bare feet padded across the hardwood floors of their loft softly, overalls rustling slightly as she made her way to their bedroom. She walked to the brown cabinet next to her side of the bed and pulled out a small encrusted gold box. This box was opened probably too often when she was home without Josh, but also when he was there. She pulled out a filter, and papers. Then taking a bunch off the gram, she grinded it slowly, closing her eyes and wishing she was somewhere else. As her hands moved absentmindedly, she imagined what the boys were doing right now. They were probably on some tour bus or green room getting drunk, which sounds a lot more fun than getting high alone. She imagined Josh, sitting in some plush chair with some extravagant jumpsuit on, smiling and laughing with his friends, without her. She decided to shoot him a text, just some reassurance that he was still there.
Penny: Hey babe, Jake try to murder you yet?
Sent: 8:23pm
She sat, licking the joint closed and waiting eagerly for a reply from Josh. After five minutes, she decided that she would put on a record and smoke, just to pass the time. Joni Mitchell’s Blue started to reverberate off the walls of the apartment, causing her to smile softly to herself. She remembered back to the first road trip she took with Josh, playing this album over and over again until they reached the other side of the country. His hair would run wild with the windows down, and a smile never left his face that week. Snapping back to reality, she brought the joint to her lips and lit her lighter, inhaling deeply and falling back into the couch. After the record had run through both sides, she felt like she needed to do something with her day other than smoke and miss Josh.
Once again, the rows of film stood daunting before her. It was as if they were the royal guard for an impenetrable force in which her motivation was protected. With a hazy mind, she started flipping through the photographs of the recent week, smiling wider with each one. Your favorite was one that you took of Josh outside of a cabin in Washington. He stood away from the camera, but was smiling straight at it, teeth shining and bandana around his neck. That was the most beautiful sight she had ever seen, the purest form of natural beauty. Nothing like anything, ever. She also chuckled to herself as she flipped to one of Sammy biting Josh’s hand, and Jake posed dramatically against a boulder.

She loved the way that the light reflected with the camera lens, and the way that it interacted with the subject. Just as she was about to write down a title for the series, her phone buzzed on the table next to her, lighting up with a notification from Josh.
Josh: Hey mama, just got off stage, it went great. I wish you could've seen it. How did the film come out?
P.S, Jake has tried to stab me sixteen times already.
Sent: 12:34AM
Penny: It came out great, here see.

Josh: Beautiful, my love. You have a gift for manipulating the light, it's amazing. Can we talk or are you too tired?
Sent: 12:36AM
The thought of talking to Josh without seeing his face and expressions change with each word, caused her chest to hurt with want. So instead, she clicked the Facetime button rather than call.
Her phone vibrated for a few seconds, panging in her ear loudly. Yet within the blink of an eye, she was greeted with her favorite pair of brown eyes staring onto the screen in front of him. She smiled, and floofed her hair to make sure it didn’t look too trash.
“Hey pretty lady,” he smiled at her. Josh was laying on his back on a bed, presumably on the tour bus. He was lacking in a shirt, but the beads that always decorated his neck hung down past his chest. His hand was stretched above his head, and the phone was angled up from his stomach.
“Hey pretty boy,” she responded, positioning the phone in a more comfortable position on the couch, “watcha up to rockstar?”
“you know the usual, living the life, but I really really really wish you were here, everybody does.” His eyes blinked slowly, showing signs of tiredness, but he would never reveal that to you right now, your time was too precious.
“I do too, trust me its so fucking depressing here with just me and Marely,” she sighed, reffering to the tabby cat that her and Josh adopted together a few months ago.
“aw how is she?” He asked, smiling into the phone. Penny moved the camera to her right, displaying the cat that was curled up by her hip.
“She is great, but wishes she was living the rockstar life,” Josh chuckled to Penny’s response.
“Okay but seriously Pen, can’t you just call sick for one week, say you got really bad food poisoning,” he pleaded.
“If I say that, then I feel like I will accidentally manifest that I will actually get food poisoning for a week,” she laughed into the phone.
“fair point, but it’s not the same without you here, I’m not the same without you here,” his tone shifted to a more serious one with every word, looking straight into her eyes through the screen.
“I mean technically I’m on studio time right now, so they wouldn’t know if I came with you for a week or two...or they would fire me,” she scratched her chin, thinking out the possibilities in her head.
“If they fire you, then just go freelance, they never fully understood your work anyways,” he smirked at her, knowing that she always complained about the company she was hired by, repeating their failures for understanding creativity.
“Alright Kizka, you drive a hard bargain,” Penny smiled.
“Is that a yes?” Josh’s eyes widened at the blonde girl through the screen.
“it is not a no.”
“fuck yes, so I can book you a plane ride to California for tomorrow?” He now got up from the bunk, excitedly running to his computer.
“Mhm, just tell me what time.”
“Ok here’s one, leaves Nashville at 8, gets in Cali at 10,” Josh said, calculating the time difference in his head.
“you are such a bad influence, Kizka,” Penny rubbed her forehead tiredly.
“I will see you tomorrow my love, get some sleep okay?” he smiled at her tired expression, kissing the camera of his phone sweetly.
“see you tomorrow.” and with that she hung up the phone and exhaled loudly. What just happened? One conversation with Josh and she hits the road. It makes her think back to when she didn’t have anyone, and spent years alone in her little studio apartment, taking photos of walls and birds. Now she would drop everything with the snap of his fingers. In her heart she knew that her dependency on him for happiness was not right, but she was too deep in. Her head was stuck underwater, surrounded by the cool rush of his love. The flaws went unnoticed by both of them in fact, just simply mistaking it for head over heels infatuation.
As her head hit the pillow, she thought that the emptiness of the room was less significant as it was a few hours ago. Maybe it was the excitement of the idea of not sleeping alone tomorrow, or just the few minutes of hearing his voice. Whatever it was lulled her softly to sleep.
In a hazy dream, she remembered her and Josh’s first kiss. It was outside of their favorite bar after their second date. He stood next to her, shoulder pressed to hers, and hand interlacing with her own. He was wearing his usual attire, a white long sleeved shirt and tan pants. Yet he looked extravagant, his energy was inherently outgoing. As he says, the Kizka’s have a “flair for flair”. The cool wind seemed to push the pair together, jostling her hair softly as he looked over at her. His eyes were slightly hooded, closed just a slightly against the wind. Her glances fell down to his cupids bow, admiring its shape, then to his lips where she wished she never had to leave. He noticed the shift in her gaze and did the same himself, smirking at her. She smiled, tugging his chin towards her. His hands laced through her hair, smiling into the kiss. Their lips met, and they fit together like they were made for each other, and no one else.
Her alarm forced her out of the wonderful image that played in her sleep, jutting her eyes open to the harsh sunlight of the morning. She quickly packed an old leather suitcase with a few pairs of jeans, shirts, and dresses, knowing that she would be stealing jewlery and sweatshirts from Josh. In what seemed like five minutes she was at her gate, coffee in hand, and camera stowed in her carry-on bag. She decided to text Josh that she was about to board the plane, knowing that he was probably still asleep.
Penny: Hey, boarding now. I’ll text you when I land
sent 8:05am
She then put her earbuds in, deciding on listening to the new album, just so she was prepared to sing alone at the shows. It wasn’t like she hadn’t memorized it the night it came out, but she always felt bad listening to it with Josh, it just felt odd to her. The first song to come on shuffle was Light My Love, and she nearly cried remembering the fireside performance she witnessed a not too long ago.
The plane ride went by in what felt like minutes. Her mind was racing with so many thoughts, most about getting in trouble with work, but others about Josh and how excited she was to see him and the rest of the band. The tires of the plane landed in California with a jaulting thud, and she was brought out of her dissociation.
She knew that Josh expected her to uber to the venue, after all he was probably just waking up now. So she called an uber, standing outside of LAX clad in an old Janis Joplin shirt, flare jeans, and her classic high heeled leather boots. Penny looked straight out of the 70′s, but Josh felt like the 70′s, a pair who perfectly complimented each other.
The uber ride was bumpy and seemingly and hour too long. She finally reached the venue at 11:46, hastily thanking the driver and sauntering to the tour bus parked behind the stage. She knocked a few times on the door, and after the third time, she finally heard a groggy “what do you want”
She smiled, pushing the door open with her foot and walking up the stairs, she was met with a pool of long brown hair and a very naked Jake laying on one of the bunks. Josh was nowhere to be seen.
“Oh hey Penny, what are you doing here?” Jake asked casually, ignoring the fact that he was naked. She was not phased by the latter twins actions, after all, she spent a fair amount of time with the band and often felt like she was equally as close with all of the members.
“Just lookin for my loverboy, any idea where he is?” She answered, leaning against on of the seats camly.
“I think I remember him saying he wanted to go hear the acoustics of the empty stage, so maybe he’s there,” Jake answered groggily.
“thanks,” she said as she made her way, now at a faster speed then before towards the back entrance of the venue. The staff didn’t seem to bat an eye at her as she hastily walked hallway after hallway until she reached the back of the stage. Then she saw him, standing with his arms out wide, silently absorbing the feeling of the empty arena.
“babe?” she said, accidentally making it sound like a hushed whisper.
The curly headed man then turned his head over his shoulder, smiling. His smile widened nearly ten fold when he saw the girl to his left. She looked amazing, her hair seemingly always falling in just the right way, she paused for a moment, reaching for something in her bag.
“don’t move, and look forward again, just like you were before,” She smiled and clicked the shutter of the camera, knowing it would be beautiful, every photo with Josh in it is. She then put the camera away and ran into his arms, collapsing into his embrace. He hugged her tightly, moving his hands up and down her back.
“I missed you so much my love,” He said into her hair.
“I missed you more lover,” she replied.
Hey pretty people! I hoped you liked this chapter, I may or may not write another either tomorrow night or by sunday! Asks are open for Jake or Josh imagines BTW!

Meet CRAVITY, the K-Pop Super Rookies With a Gravitational Pull [Q&A]
Tumblr media
Photo: Courtesy of Artist
The world of K-Pop is always changing and evolving, and CRAVITY is the latest group to illustrate the universal appeal of the worldwide phenomenon. Originally debuting in the midst of the ongoing COVID pandemic, the affectionately-dubbed “Super Rookies” found themselves in an unprecedented situation, having to make a name for themselves in a genre built around extraordinary live shows and human connection, all while the world shut down around them. In spite of the odds, the group’s debut, Hideout: Remember Who We Are, climbed to the top of the U.S. iTunes K-Pop chart, cementing their place as super rookies ready to take the world by storm.
And hardly a year following their noteworthy debut, CRAVITY is back to make good on the early promise that came with topping with the iTunes chart and being Starship Entertainment’s first new boy band in five years (following in the footsteps of their seniors, Monsta X). The Awakening: Written in the Stars arrives as the group’s first full-length debut album and serves as a marked maturation for each of the members. Consisting of eight tracks that transcend genres, from explosive hip-hop to euphoric electronic-laden pop, CRAVITY fearlessly brings their ambitious vision to life.
We had the chance to catch up with the boys behind CRAVITY via e-mail ahead of the release of their full-length debut album, which is out now, to check-in and see how they’re doing before they become a household name.
youtube
Ones to Watch: What does CRAVITY mean?
Serim: It’s a combination of the word “Creativity” and “Gravity” and it has special meaning behind it--we (CRAVITY) will gravitate the audience into our unique universe with our charms.
What’s one fun fact about every member of CRAVITY?
Allen: Apparently I sleep talk in three languages? English, Korean, and Chinese.
Hyeongjun: I always wear contact lenses whether it’s a day off or not.
Seongmin: I enjoy eating jellies and candies these days.
Serim: I always clear my throat before I sing or rap.
Minhee: I don't like eggplant.
Jungmo: Allen sleep talks in three different languages and these days, he likes to shop online.
Woobin: I bite my nails, I am always looking for a new song, and beatboxing is one of the things that I enjoy doing these days.
Wonjin: These days, I play the game called Animal Crossing, but I'm too lazy to pull weeds on my island. I need some help haha ☺
Taeyoung: Many fans say I look like a cat! BUT I am actually allergic to cats ~
And what are everyone’s roles?
Allen: I lead the group during dance practices and make sure everyone is looking sharp by the time we release new music or prepare for a performance.
Hyeongjun: I’m in charge of passion! HJ = Passion!
Seongmin: I am the “Maknae” of the group and as the youngest member, I get along with my brothers (members) and I’m like the vitamin for the group!
Serim: The strongest and photographer for the members.
Minhee: Everyone is different, so it's fun
Jungmo: I’m in a vocal position in CRAVITY, so sometimes I upload vocal cover videos.
Woobin: I'm the main vocal of the group.
Wonjin: I like to make some jokes to keep our team’s mood up. It looks so easy, but it is actually very hard.
Taeyoung: My role is to hype up our members!
Serim, do the boys ever make being the group leader a difficult job or are they all pretty well-behaved?
Serim: I think it's really comfortable because the members listen to me well and follow me well.
Were there any particular challenges that arose from debuting in the midst of a pandemic?
Allen: There were definitely moments where I was up on stage tired and worn out, not being able to perform at my best due to not having a live audience, but I still try my best to not let that show through the camera lens.
Hyeongjun: I think the biggest challenge is not being able to meet the fans.
Seongmin: I wanted to perform in front of the fans, but I'm sad that I can't.
Minhee: It's still very difficult that I can't show our stages directly to the fans.
Serim: I'm in charge of passion. Expectations about meeting our fans are growing, but I'm sad that we can't at the moment.
Jungmo: Before our debut, we imagined performing on stage in front of our fans and around the world, but these days we are just performing in front of cameras so it’s really sad. We really miss you guys!
Woobin: I want you to understand what CRAVITY is trying to say. We really miss you and want to see you guys in person.
Wonjin: The fact that we can’t see our fans. We had a fairly long break in between our new album and the last one, but it felt as if it was a year. In addition, when we perform on stage without our fans, it’s hard for us to be energetic.
Taeyoung: That we can't meet our fans face to-face... that is a big, sad problem.
With your debut reaching number 1 on the US iTunes K-pop chart, how does it feel going forward with future projects?
Wonjin: I’m so excited because there is only one way for us which is to go up.
What do you hope people take away from your first official album?
Hyeongjun: We prepared a lot for the performance so please look forward to our performance and be sure to look out for our music video too!
Woobin: We tried to incorporate various genres and sounds into this album, so we hope you can find your taste in it!
Can you speak on the title of your full-length debut album, The Awakening: Written in the Stars?
Seongmin: It's focused on the keyword “Awakening,” a challenge towards a new goal. Also, please look forward to seeing how CRAVITY’s message will be written in the future!
Jungmo: It’s our first full-length album, and it means that we are all awakened and got more mature after coming out from our hideout.
Why do you think K-Pop has become such a worldwide phenomenon?
Allen: I believe K-Pop truly has something magical going on. Its power to connect people from all around the world is unbelievable. Social media definitely plays a big part in making K-Pop into such a world phenomenon, but I firmly believe that music is a universal language and that no matter where you’re from or what language you speak, the emotions portrayed by a piece of music will always be well communicated.
Are there any other groups or artists you would love to collaborate with?
Allen: It’d be nice for us to collaborate with Steve Aoki. His collaboration, “Play It Cool” with our company senior Monsta X really suited their vibe and sound, so I feel like if he ever got to produce for us, he would be able to create something that would really suit our image and our sound.
Hyeongjun: It’s still the same for me, I want to collaborate with MONSTA X.
Seongmin: I'd love to collaborate with Charlie Puth.
Serim: I’ve always liked Ateez sunbaenim’s performances and would like to have a collaboration opportunity with them.
Minhee: Anyone is good, it would be an honor for us to have an opportunity to collaborate with other artists.
Jungmo: I want to collaborate with Jooyoung sunbaenim because our new album has a lot of cool tracks written by Jooyoung sunbaenim and his crew! Also, I want to learn his vocal style.
Woobin: Lauv, and Kihyun from our senior group MONSTA X.
Wonjin: I want to collaborate with The Kid Laroi. I knew him through a song called “Stay.” I fell in love with his vocal skills and style and he is so young. I want to be his friend.
Taeyoung: I’m still waiting for the opportunity to collab with The Chainsmokers.
You’ve yet to perform for your fans in a large-scale setting. How do you feel about the possibility of performing for your fans on tour?
Taeyoung: I’m really excited to meet LUVITYs around the world and perform on stage while listening to their voices. It would be an unforgettable experience in my life.
Is there anything you all like to do when not working on music?
Allen: We all enjoy playing board games together. A few of us also like to work out or play sports such as soccer, baseball, badminton, and basketball.
Hyeongjun: I’m into watching tv series on Netflix.
Seongmin: First of all, I'm looking forward to meeting many fans, and I'm looking forward to learning about the culture of various countries. I also enjoy reading books.
Serim: Watching movies!
Minhee: I’m currently looking for one!
Jungmo: I like watching horror movies because I am interested in ghost haha.
Woobin: Cooking? I love to cook!
Wonjin: I like baseball or basketball, but these days because of COVID-19, I’m sad I can’t play.
Taeyoung: I like to play badminton and watch memes~
If you could say one thing to all your fans, what would it be?
Allen: Don’t go anywhere and stay right where you are. We will come find you once the pandemic subsides.
Hyeongjun: Let’s not stop here, LUVITY! Fighting!
Seongmin: Let's always be healthy until we meet each other.
Serim: LUVITY~~ I miss you and I love you.
Minhee: LUVITY! Always be happy!
Jungmo: We really prepared this album hard, so we hope you like it. We always love you guys.
Woobin: Please look forward to our new album! Love ya!
Wonjin: Please love our new album and stay healthy. I miss you guys so so much.
Taeyoung: I just want to say I really care about our fans and I love you so much!
What’s next for CRAVITY?
Allen: They say the sky’s the limit but we’re going to be up by satellites.
Seongmin: It’s my goal to finish our album promotions well and I hope to meet our fans as soon as possible.
Minhee: There's still a long way to go and I'm pretty sure that there will be more opportunities for us to be on stage in the near future, so I think we should all work harder to move forward.
CRAVITY’s full-length debut album, The Awakening: Written in the Stars, is available to stream on Spotify and Apple Music.

There Goes My Life - Chapter Seven
A/N Get your teacups ready, people. The tea is about to be poured.
Tumblr media
Tuesday, November 9, 2038
“So where’s this photo album. I wanna see how cute of a kid you were.”
Penelope glanced up from her spot on Clementine’s bed as her older sister opened the door for her friends. Penelope wasn’t still a huge fan of her sister’s friends but they were on okay terms so she just stayed quiet and typed away on her laptop, notebook resting on the sheets beside her.
“Right here. Be careful with it.” Clementine grabbed the small black book from her empty desk and passed it over. Her two girl friends sat on the side of the bed with it, forcing Penelope to shuffle away from them a little, huddling more into the corner. Bradley leaned over their shoulders to see too.
Penelope could almost smell the weed off of him and she discreetly hid her mouth and nose in her hoodie to try and breath better.
“Your parents were so cute.” one of the girls said at the first picture.
“Your dad was hot.” the second added.
“Ew, why does everyone say that?” Clementine shuttered, sitting down in her desk chair on her phone as her friends flipped through the book.
“Because it’s true.”
“You’re disgusting.” Clementine laughed, shaking her head.
The friends flipped a few more pages, Penelope busying herself with her essay and being ignored as usual. She didn’t mind though; it was nice to have her sister’s company while at the same time being able to be quietly on her own.
“Aw, look at you in that dress. How old were you here?” Bradley laughed lightly, pressing a finger against the photograph.
Clementine leaned over to see which one they were talking about, “Oh, I was nine. Father-Daughter dance in grade four.”
“You don’t look like your dad here.” the second friend said.
“What? I’m not hot enough for you?” Clementine joked.
“Very funny.”
“She’s right though.” the first friend held the book up in the air to look between a photo of Daniel and Clementine herself. “You don’t look like him at all.”
“I know. I look most like my mom.” Clementine added casually. “Penelope looks more like dad.”
The three teenagers turned to look at the younger sister as if not even realising she was there. The book was held up to her and they all nodded in agreement after analyzing her a moment. Penelope rolled her eyes as they looked away and back to her sister.
“She does. You don’t.” the second friend said.
“Well, I don’t know what to tell you.” Clementine chuckled. “The Seavey genes were not in my favour I guess.”
The group fell back into silence as they continued flipping through the book.
“How young were your parents when they had you? You look old here for your dad’s 30th.” Bradley said.
“I was…11 there, I think?” Clementine said. “Yeah, they had me during their first year of college. They were not even nineteen yet. Nell was a year and a half later.”
“Accident squad!” Penelope and Clementine air high fived before giggling to themselves at their own little inside joke.
“So they met in high school then? That’s cute. High school sweethearts.” the first friend smiled, flipping back to the first page of Florence and Daniel outside the dorms in the snow.
“No, no. They didn’t meet in high school. Dad’s from BC. He didn’t move here until college started.” Clementine said.
Her first friend looked up at her and furrowed her eyebrows for a brief second before looking back down to the picture.
“What?” Clementine asked.
“That doesn’t…make sense, Clem. They would have to have met before high school graduation.”
“Why?” Clementine frowned.
“Because you were born in January and you’re telling me they met at the earliest, the end of August. Either you grew really fuckin’ fast in utero or someone isn’t telling you the truth.”
Clementine looked between her friends and her sister, her face furrowed in confusion and concern.
“That’s ridiculous.” Penelope spoke up, clearly sensing her sister’s anxiety. “That’s a crazy speculation. Dad is your dad, Clem. End of story.”
“But the dates…” Clementine faded out softly, grabbing the book from her friends to stare down at the picture.
“I’m in midwifery, Clem, and your mom looks a good eight and a half months there.” the first friend said gently.
“She never had any other boyfriend.” Clementine mumbled. “Dad was her first relationship.”
“Clementine.” Penelope groaned. “Stop overthinking. They probably met over spring break or something when Dad came down for campus tours but didn’t wanna give us kids the wrong idea about their morals or whatever so they never mentioned it.”
“Yeah. That makes sense.” Clementine said, taking a sharp breath as she slammed the photo album shut and turned to her friends. “Right?”
“Yeah.” they all answered quickly.

Innerview: ? / The One Club - Young Guns
May 2008
Art & Design: DJG
Note: Submission(s) Explanation
01) The Afterparty & The Wilders This is a Kansas City, MO concert poster made for bands The Afterparty and The Wilders. It is originally hand-made out of sewing ribbons and pencil writing. The “Afterparty” is built of one continuous ribbon piece. Posters are 12″ x 18″, inkjet prints (two different layers) by DJG on thick, flesh-colored paper found for cheap. Amie Nelson is credited as the client for this piece. She and DJG are both credited as the copywriters for this poster. This poster received honors and exhibition around the globe from the Type Directors Club of NYC in 2007. 02) Cacophony at Blank Space The first DJG double-sided poster is for a music and art group exhibition called “Cacophony” at Blank Space Gallery in Oakland, CA. What you see here are both views in one frame. The original front and back is roughly 36″ x 75″ and built by hand in an eight hour period on my basement floor. The client is Hunter Mack of Gold Robot Records. Copy writing credits go to Hunter Mack and DJG. Final posters are printed on 13.5″ x 22″ blue print paper. They are to be sold at the opening exhibition night. I rarely sell things. 03) Capture the Drag This is a piece of personal art built on a big piece of foam board. It is mostly made from a pile of found objects and trash that have captured my interest. I have been sitting on this pile for seven or eight years and put tiny dents into it whenever i get an itch. This image came to my head on a vacant Friday night and needed to be made. 04) Danielson Danielson released a highly acclaimed album in 2006 called “Ships”. They are a very unique, spiritually-influenced family band that makes odd freak-folk music that is both almost eerie and inspiring…in that strange and surreal basement church childlike puppet theater way. Here we have our Lord’s lamb with boat ores as feet, sailing the seas. The little guy steers the ship of man in his gullet, leaving a trail of sheep-like droppings to mark the way (aka: anchor drops). The lamb is originally 24″ x 36″ (give or take) and made from front lawn clippings, weeds and the tiny flowers that never get noticed. Typography is all done by hand and headlined with little round metal pieces collected from a construction site. Posters are printed 12″ x 18″ on white construction paper. They are my first posters for a New York City show. It is sometimes nice to see the sheep get kicked from the clubhouse a little further down the road. Client for this poster is a record label called The Record Machine. Copy writers are Nathan Reusch and DJG. I normally don’t make the same thing twice, but of late I have been making more and more sheep in a similar fashion. I made five this past Friday for a show in California and four smaller ones last September for a St. Louis, MO exhibit. A huge one or two will go on display at the Missouri State Fair this summer. The Danielson sheep was on display and was part of a DJG series that won “Best in Show” at the 2007 AIGA Kansas City Design Awards & Banquet. The making of sheep is a great exercise while in-between other things. The sheep are cute and have personality, I like this “cloning” aspect, and they help reconnect me to the past. I grew up on a sheep farm, showed sheep in county fairs, got tickled by baby lambs, kept some on the back porch, played basketball with them on my sheep poop basketball court, still appreciate their connection to Biblical things and still think that their round droppings look like M & M’s brown candies. 05) Elevator Division – Whatever Makes You Happy A run of 250 hand-cut and spray painted cardboard CD packages with photocopied inserts were made for this CD by a band called The Elevator Division (I am only showing you the cover image). I lived on the couch and worked out of the band’s basement at the time, so we had a great one-on-one relationship. I played the instrument of full-time art director and part-time adviser for six or seven years. This image reflects the ideas and themes within the lyrics that deal with coming of age change, conflict, war and the shooting off of one’s options. The first 250 went quickly and I only own one. Though,I happened to inherit a second via marriage to a gal who bought one back in the day when she had her eyes on my design guns. A second run was created with spray paint on standard CD jewel cases, making production less of a hassle and still maintaining the original idea/execution. And some people bought both. Copy Writers include James Hoskins, Paul Buzan, Sam Hoskins and DJG. This “Finger Bomb” image came to me the night before I was to begin production of this massive project. The idea I had before of a soldier running just didn’t seem to fit completely and I was being too easy on my head. This one came and spoke and then screamed during an idiotic mad rush of basement spray paint fumes on a stormy late spring evening. The image has also taken heart with many an entertaining design publication (Print / STEP), book and even strange collectors of DJG work. Upon finishing the 250 packaged marathon, I lept out of the basement at a crack of lightning and belly-slid down the slick front lawn hill into the gushing gutters of an urban Kansas City street. With red paint streaming from my ears, nostrils and mouth, the “squatters” at the house across the street found this manic display of joy as quite interesting and clapped and hollered. 06) DJG Marks (Image NA / Go Here) After eight years or so of making things in a more “professional” manner, a large paper trail of logos had been stringing up. This poster was created to show and memorialize almost every single member in the DJG logo family. There are a small handful that slipped away, and will be searched for at a later date. Clients vary from many bands to bars to websites to a law firm, university union, film studio, media and recording and computer companies, city slogan, and a church. 07) DJG’s One Eye Brow “DJG’s One Eye Brow” was the first (and probably last) professional lecture given by DJG Design. This poster was created to promote the event and to collaborate an original art piece with friend and fellow graphic maker, Douglas James Wilson. He is a university design instructor, fellow graphic enthusiast, photographer and letterpress operator in Springfield, MO. The lecture was at the design school I studied at, Missouri State University in Springfield, MO. MSU’s Students In Design are credited as the client for this poster. DJG & Doug are the copy writers, designers and type makers. Poster images were first made and printed in black and blue inks on 13.5″ x 22″ blue print paper by DJG. They were then shipped to Douglas James Wilson who letter pressed two layers on top of that in yellow and black. The fine print at the bottom of the poster is an actual email conversation between DJG and Douglas about the project. This poster was honored and exhibited at the AIGA Kansas City Awards & Banquet. Douglas and DJG have combined on one other project exactly one year after this lecture poster was completed, and plan to make more and more babies together. Currently there is what we call a “Three Way” in construction. DJG has made close to forty original art pieces and passes digital files of the images to Frank Chimero (www.makemakemake.org) who makes stuff on top of them and prints them out and then ships them to Douglas James Wilson (www.onpaperwings.com) who will end it in letterpress. 08) The Vines & Jet DJG heard about Australian bands The Vines & Jet traveling a long way to play the middle of Lawrence, KS and decided to make a poster commemorating this journey/event. These “suitcase” posters were made and printed entirely by hand. Old, thick posters found in a dumpster were covered with sticky contact paper from a roll that an old roommate left behind. They were then cut to the shape of suitcases and typography was created with spray paint and rubber stamps. The type stenciling resembles the typical markings that identify band equipment cases and the vine pattern is a salute to tacky suitcases and travel gear. The posters were celebrated by Print Magazine, STEPinside Design and a few other publications and books. DJG has since looked out of curiosity for more vine patterned contact paper… 09) DJG’s Truck Stop Love Stalls No. 1 & 2 These two, decently-sized, mini-type billboards were built and exhibited in a special Valentine’s show in February of 2008. Handmade type has always been in the DJG diet, but lately, and in conjunction with the action of pushing into more straight so-called “art” pieces, giant works of typography have been starting to leak from the DJG studio. This twin project has helped trigger more and more marriage with the designs and writings of DJG. A brief, 48 line poem was written on the seven minute walk to the day job in September of last year and 3/4 of it was used as inspiration for this project of experimenting with word and type design out of many types of things. It was a real hoot and many rolls of tape are holding it all together. Though, one word will be defined for sure in the future, “BIGGER”. 10) The Violet Burning One day at my day job I found that a kind lady mending the plants and landscaping had dumped a ton of plant clippings into my trusty janitorial barrel-cart. Earlier that morning my mind had been plowing over ideas for a new poster design. The clippings found their way into my pockets and out the door I flung at 3:30pm to run home and hit the basement door with full design speed. Letters and type were constructed, scanned and inkjet printed and another layer of bugs and flowers was put over top of it. Copy writer credits belong to DJG. The poster was well-received at the show venue and around Kansas City and eventually recognized and exhibited by The Type Directors Club of NYC in 2004 and many other publications and books. -djg

One thing that Generation X kids did before - other people too, of course, but I'm talking about something specific - was spending time with friends and listening to records. You may have skipped school, you may have smoked weed, but it could just as easily have been on a Sunday afternoon with a two liter bottle of soda. Maybe someone had a guitar or a drum kit that you could have fun with, and maybe after a while you even started a band, but the main thing was to be together, pool your collective adolescent energies against the forces of boredom and responsibility. In the end, most of us negotiated a truce or surrendered completely. Not the Beastie Boys. And although there is admiration and affection on the faces of middle-aged fans flocking to the Kings Theater in Brooklyn in "Beastie Boys Story", there is also an envied nostalgia. As Adam Horovitz and Michael Diamond, the surviving members of the trio, explain from the theater scene - in a live appearance directed and filmed by their friend Spike Jonze - they turned jokes with friends and musical material into a career and a way of life .All these years later, they still seem a little surprised by the whole. The story they tell - a simplified version of the story presented in "Beastie Boys Book ", their big bestseller of 2018 - is full of fun and also tinged with grief and regret. They did stupid things along the way and were not always good for their friends, including Kate Schellenbach, an original member of the group in the early 1980s (and later the drummer for Luscious Jackson). It was sidelined when the Beasties teamed up with producer Rick Rubin and up-and-coming tycoon Russell Simmons and went from a punk band to an unlikely but extremely successful rap group.Barely out of adolescence, the Beastie Boys - Ad-Rock (Horovitz), Mike D (Diamond) and MCA (Adam Yauch) - found themselves opening for Madonna, filming with Run-DMC and dominating MTV with "(You Gotta) Fight for your right (to party!)", A bit of anti-brother satire that has become a brother's anthem. Brattiness became their brand, and they found themselves trapped in a collective character and a performance style that turned mischievous irreverence into unpleasant. But then they grew up. With their chronicle divided into chapters interspersed with old photographs and video clips, Horovitz and Diamond read their jokes from telesales at the back of the theater and recognize their previous shortcomings without going into too much detail. They're not very interested in opening old wounds or settling scores, although the air in the theater gets quite cold when Rubin and Simmons - that the Beasties feel manipulated and exploited - are mentioned. The heart of the story is the second act that began when the Beasties began to take themselves seriously as musicians and took control of their own creativity in the early 1990s. It is no longer an act of new, they released a series of four albums - "Paul's Boutique", "Check Your Head", "Ill Communication" and "Hello Nasty" - which are always fresh, funny, surprising and beautiful."Beastie Boys Story" has its own kind of beauty, even if the aesthetic is more papa rock than hip-hop. Horovitz and Diamond are a good company - unpretentious without false modesty; self-aware without irritating air quotes. They both love and love Adam Yauch, who was 47 when he died of cancer in 2012. He was, according to the memories of his friends, the glue that held the Beastie Boys together, their ethical guide and intellectual as well as the one with the deepest sense of humor. His loss is both the emotional anchor of the film and the thread that links his anecdotes and digressions. It is an escape to the past and a moving and generous elegance.Beastie Boys StoryUnclassified. Duration: 1 hour 59 minutes. Monitor Apple TV Plus. https://oltnews.com/beastie-boys-story-review-switch-the-microphone-and-the-memories?_unique_id=5ea13d2bb5930

Orlando Suero, 94, Dies; Photographed Notables, Including the Kennedys
He photographed Shirley MacLaine dancing with Rudolf Nureyev at a party in Malibu. He shot the actor Dennis Hopper and the singer Michelle Phillips during their eight-day marriage, including a joint-smoking moment in the bathtub (both were fully clothed). And he caught Princess Margaret all but swooning over Paul Newman as Alfred Hitchcock stared straight ahead.
The photographer Orlando Suero chronicled the lives of stars from 1962 to the mid-1980s, as the golden age of Hollywood dipped into its twilight. He took particular delight in capturing celebrities with each other, in their element or not. But he was perhaps best known for his portraits.
Among his more stunning photographs was one of an elegant Jacqueline Kennedy in a gown lighting candles at a formal dinner table in Georgetown in 1954. Mr. Suero called it his Iwo Jima photo — his career-defining shot.
Mr. Suero (pronounced SWEAR-oh) died on Aug. 19 at a nursing home in Los Angeles. He was 94.
His death was confirmed by his son Jim, who said he had survived a number of strokes.
Mr. Suero, a native New Yorker, started taking pictures at 14 with a used Kodak Jiffy camera given to him by his father. He was soon working at camera shops and photo labs, including a stint at Compo Photo Color in Times Square. There he printed images for “The Family of Man,” Edward Steichen’s monumental 1955 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art.
He printed those large images for the exhibition more than a year in advance. By the time it opened, he was already moving up in the photography world.
While at Compo, Mr. Suero had received a side assignment to photograph a children’s event sponsored by Hanover Bank. Max Lowenherz, who owned the Three Lions Picture Agency, saw Mr. Suero’s photos in the bank window, asked who the photographer was and hired him.
It was Mr. Suero’s first professional job as a photographer, his son said, and he was eager to make his mark. So he proposed taking a series of pictures of the young Senator John F. Kennedy and his new wife, Jacqueline. Mr. Lowenherz was not interested because so many others were writing about the couple. But he said that if Mr. Suero could find a publication willing to run his pictures, he would agree.
Mr. Suero pitched the idea to McCall’s magazine, which loved it. The young photographer ended up spending five days with the newlywed Kennedys at their modest red-brick home in Georgetown, on the carefree cusp of an extraordinary period in American history.
His photos showed Jackie kneeling in the living room, sorting her record albums; Jackie weeding the garden while Jack, in a T-shirt, read the newspaper; and, of course, several images of Jackie lighting the candles at her dinner table, one of them a frame so perfectly composed and luminous that it looks more like a painting than a photograph.
Mrs. Kennedy herself was impressed and sent Mr. Suero a note. “If I’d realized what a wonderful photographer you were, I never would have been the jittery subject I was,” she wrote. “They are the only pictures I’ve ever seen of me where I don’t look like something out of a horror movie.”
Mr. Suero later gravitated to Hollywood, where he went on to make a name for himself photographing the beautiful people. His favorite subjects included Natalie Wood, Michael Caine, Sharon Tate, Claudia Cardinale and Brigitte Bardot, whom he photographed lounging on a bed by the ocean and, later, dressed as Charlie Chaplin.
His lens also caught Jack Nicholson, Julie Andrews, Faye Dunaway, Robert Redford, Diana Ross and many more.
He served as a still photographer on movie sets, including those of “Torn Curtain” (1966), “Hell in the Pacific” (1968), “Play It Again, Sam” (1972), “Lady Sings the Blues” (1972), “Chinatown” (1974) and “The Towering Inferno” (1974).
Mr. Suero struck up a particular friendship with Lee Marvin, who, like Mr. Suero, had joined the Marines during World War II. When they became acquainted in Hollywood, they realized they had met before: at a military hospital in New Caledonia, during the war in the South Pacific. Jim Suero said Mr. Marvin was his father’s “one true friend from Hollywood.”
In the midst of all the glamour, Mr. Suero suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder. He found comfort and joy in taking pictures, but when he wasn’t working he could sink into depression.
“When you come back, the war doesn’t end for you,” he wrote in “Orlando: Photography” (2018), a collection of his photographs.
“It stays with you for life for the most part,” he added. “Photography was my solace.”
Orlando Vincent Suero was born in Manhattan on May 30, 1925. His father, Vicente Andres Suero y Seoane, originally from Cuba, was a nightclub manager in Manhattan and Miami, and his mother, Ofelia (Dominguez Ayala) Suero, originally from Mexico, was a homemaker.
Orlando grew up in Washington Heights and attended P.S. 132. His first job was as a copy boy at The New York Times, where one day in 1943, at the age of 17, he got a surprising break.
He had been despairing at how clueless the older writers sounded in describing the red-hot trumpeter Harry James and his band, so the editors asked him to write his own story about a James concert at the Paramount.
“Jive, as a Hep-Cat Hears It,” read the headline, with the subheading, “17-Year-Old Beats Out a Panegyric to Its Glory,” conveying Mr. Suero’s frenetic style and liberal use of a vocabulary so baffling to the editors that they asked him to append a glossary of terms (“slush pump” = trombone; “coffins” = pianos; “coo for moo” = worked for his money).
Mr. Suero joined the Marines that year and headed to the South Pacific with the Sixth Marine Division. He was shot in the arm, received a Purple Heart and was discharged in 1945. He returned to New York and attended the New York Institute of Photography, now an online school.
Mr. Suero at his home in Thousand Oaks, Calif., last year with a copy of his book “Orlando: Photography.” “He is very shocked that his photos have come back to life,” his son said, “because he never considered himself to be a great photographer.”CreditKaryl Nakamura Suero
He met his future wife, Margaret Ann Greenslade, after the war. They married in 1951. In addition to their son Jim, she survives him, as do their daughter, Wendy Breuklander; another son, Chris; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Despite the success of his Kennedy photos, Mr. Suero found that work in New York was spotty, so he signed on with the John Deere Company in Moline, Ill., where he took industrial photographs for advertising from 1961-62.
“It was horribly depressing, and, coupled with my dad’s PTSD, it was a real rough time,” Jim Suero said. He stayed in Moline for about a year before the move to Hollywood, where celebrities found him unassuming and easy to work with.
Many of his photos were never published. His son Jim and a friend, the producer Rod Hamilton, discovered them in boxes a few years ago and compiled them into “Orlando: Photography,” which reviews said finally gave Mr. Suero his proper due at 93.
“My father is very humble about his work,” his son wrote in the book. “He is very shocked that his photos have come back to life because he never considered himself to be a great photographer. Frankly, he never thought of himself as worthy of a book. But he is embracing it, that’s for sure.”
