“Hiram, I could run right now, even free as I am, run from nothing, run right past them mountains, past all the rivers…and then after all that, I could run some more” “For memory is the chariot, and memory is the way, and memory is bridge from the curse of slavery to the boon of freedom” “The light of freedom had been reduced to embers, but it was still shining in me…I kept running, bent, loping, locked, but running all the same, with my whole chest aflame” It’s been a long wait, but this magnificent slow building story was one of the best I’ve ever read. Coates did an excellent job diving into the well of slavery and giving light to the ugly and ruined bits. Exploring the “love” between master and servant; discussions on being liberated from man; and highlighting the power of memory-this story encompassed all that and more as I joined Hiram through his journey. I never felt bored in this story. It’s lush descriptions and honest dialogue open many doors regarding the issue of identity, slavey, and abolitionism and its true intent. Even Corrine Quinn was something of a character that I couldn’t quite place, which made the story even better. A story that supports abolitionism,what it means to be free, and the power of memory and what it can do. “Like many turning points in a life-especially in the life of a lonely kid who stuck mostly to himself…Ray’s life changed because someone else reached out across the the gulf and touched him” “You work twice as hard. You hold your head up high, and you keep doing what you do…don’t you ever apologize for being who you are or let someone make you feel bad for being Black” “Alone, we are a solitary violin, lonely flute, a trumpet singing in the dark. Together, we were a symphony” A promising author if I ever read one. This musically intoned novel featured one of my favorite instruments-the violin-and a strong black man-Ray McMillan-who plays it beautifully. His knowledge on the violin’s anatomy and similes when playing were visceral and beautiful. I was fully entertained through this novel that explored racism inside the classical music industry and outside. I loved how Ray remained respectful when he could, even getting in a snide remark about others’ blatant racist remarks. He, along with Grandma Nora and Janice, were my favorites. The connection between Ray and his grandmother was just beautiful, and it showed when Ray played her grandfather’s fiddle. I never truly considered that there was a lack of classical musicians who were of color-I’m glad I read this story. wednesday detests it, but sometimes enid buries her nose in the back of her neck and breathes little sighs into the collar of her shirt, so she allows it to continue. even if the idea of calling something so soul-bearing as sleeping in the same bed as your partner 'cuddling' is, truthfully, laughable.
