Okay Whitney character dive, I'm just gonna use he/him pronouns for all of this except for PC ✨

I don't know how much of this makes sense but I'm going to ramble and I can already tell this is gonna get quite long

And once again small disclaimer I'm just rambling my personal speculation and thoughts and have no ways of knowing what the creators actually planned/intend for a character!

... Okay I have to add a cut I think it'll clutter the tag too much 👉👈

I actually kind of want to start out with making a comparison of Whitney vs Avery. Because I adore both, yet have actually seen some people interpret them in almost a switcharoo to what I do? Which is super interesting to me, but their character archetypes are definitely similar in several senses, and I find it fun to think about so-

From my point of view, what they have in common, in my opinion, is the "Control and status" mindset.

So when we first meet Whitney, he's obviously not introduced as a good guy, he's a bully, an utter asshole, and for a long time he is just that, he doesn't treat PC nicely until you get pretty high up in love, and still there he's still sometimes an absolute ass. (Just.. A more controlled one that will sometimes semi-respect your boundaries if you enforce them)

Whereas Avery, we meet as this charming, slightly mysterious yet chivalrous older man, helps us out, takes us out for a nice meal and in turn afterwards keeps being quite charmingly chivalrous as long-- as you act the proper way.

But the kind of funny thing it me is, with both of them, once you're in a relationship with you start to see the facade slip sometimes.

With Whitney, you start to see softer moments, it's small things that could be missed or brushed over perhaps, but you start to see moments where he shows he actually cares about the PC, and can actually be sort of sweet if you're in private with him.

Where as with Avery, you see the facade slip too-- but in the opposite way in my opinion? You start to see a colder side of him, start to see that what he cares about is appearance, and see that if you don't act the way he wanted you to, the anger comes through. (I'll definitely go more in depth of Avery if I make a post for him too)

Which again, feels like opposites, yet so similar?

And to touch back on their "control" mindset, there the thing is Whitney seems to be almost desperate for control, and will fight to have it, desperate for something he can actually have his own control over, likely stemming from a home life where he feels stuck and like he has no say in anything (Will touch more on this in just a second)

Where as Avery... Isn't desperate for control, rather he seems to simply expect it. He expects that PC will fall into line and be good, let him make the decisions that make them both look best. Especially at first of you chose the options that provoke him a bit, you can sense he almost starts to consider PC something to be tamed at that point.

Where both of them, highly value their status and other people looking upon them the way they've worked hard to obtain.

And to further explain what I meant with Whitney's home life, let's just say I think there's a reason that Whitney seems to be away from his home for as long as he can, why he prefers to loiter in alleyways and get drunk and cause trouble..

If we, once again, look at psychology, delinquent behaviors USUALLY stem from not feeling seen or heard by your parents, stem from an anger and frustration of either too strict rules or otherwise things like neglect. Same with bullying, usually also stemming from issues in the home life leaving the bully feeling weak and worthless, where bringing others down gives them a high of somewhat power. Especially to people they have a sense of envy toward.

We can also somewhat guess out from certain dialogue that Whitney's family probably isn't the wealthiest, as he describes his own room as a dump and also admits to Bailey that he indeed doesn't have near enough money to afford the PC. Plus if his parents were rich I don't think it'd make as much sense for him to be stealing, other than I guess pure provocation?

So those things combined I feel like I can definitely start to guess why Whitney might feel that lack of control in his life. I'm like... 90% sure I have seen Vrel say that the only thing feels like he has control over is his appearance? (And then the PC)

And while Whitney's relationship with the PC may start as a control thing for him, a simple way to get that itch satisfied and have some humiliation fun as well, well... He does genuinely start to care for the PC. Not that you'd get him to fully admit just how much he does.

Some of my favorite moments is when his brain almost short-wires when the PC not just reciprocates but initiates, especially outside the sexual context. Instantly blushing and trying to play it smooth but often ending up stuttering a bit. Or if you're gone too long and you can see faint tears in his eyes? Yeah good shit.

But also I absolutely have to mention how he is also so oddly soft in encounters, like often saying PC is like an angel, kissing PC'S forehead, praising... Like even in the "embarrassing" scenarios he often has this softness to him.

And to just softly go back to the whole bully psychology thing, a really interesting part of Whitney's character in my opinion is his target on Kylar, especially once he's with the PC.

Whitney in general is quite jealous / possessive, the only way he's sharing the PC is on his own volition, when he's the one controlling the scenario and who touches who. We can see he gets confrontational even in class of people just looking at the PC, or how he gets so frustrated if one of his friends try to help themselves to the PC.

So, to see the PC give someone like Kylar attention? Of course his brain will spiral.

Whitney has probably done so much to build up his position, to be popular, attractive, feared, to be in control, so to see /Kylar/, the freak, the weird little creep everyone actively avoids, who's such an easy target for bullying because of it-- /that's/ someone PC is interested in? Infuriating. A confidence hit probably. From his point of view he has so much more to offer than that pathetic little freak, doesn't he?

And that's where one of Whitney's big flaws come in, because when he feels upset, or even betrayed by the PC, he acts out. He starts to threaten, he starts to humiliate, he forces the PC into dangerous situations. A way to try and snatch that control back.

If pushed far enough, (spoiler warning here!!) we know he's even willing to sell the PC off to the underground brothel because of that loss of respect from everyone else. Because of that loss of control that he so desperately clutches onto.

But I'm gonna try and round it off a bit here--

Whitney seems to have a rather poor handle on emotions, on vulnerability. It's easier to be someone people fear and be having fun with it than it is letting someone even catch a glimpse at the vulnerable parts inside.

... Which is exactly why the moments that he has alone with the PC is something I absolutely melt over, those cracks beginning to show the softness.

So to sum up!

I find Whitney a really interesting character, as much as I roll my eyes at him and think he's a stupid ass, I really hope we in the future keep seeing him develop more and more 🤧

the highly-esteemed businessman (and occasionally part-time bartender) DILUC's persona highly contrasted from broad daylight in comparison to the narrow "night."

during the day, he was more than just the wealthiest tycoon of mondstadt—known to most of the civilians as the cold, brooding man that’s rather vocal about his negative opinions regarding the nation’s knights of favonius, though polite, modest: the definition of the ideal gentleman (and possible marriage candidate).

albeit unknown, when darkness starts to loom over the city as lights start to illuminate the area and stars begin scattering every inch of the sky, he’s better known as the “darknight hero,” a vigilante who had gained the praise and awe from the average citizens and the rare few of them who saw him fight crime in person.

however, to you, he was simply diluc, sometimes ‘luc in private. you didn’t use the seemingly sacred alias nearly as frequently than in your younger years, but the nickname-turned term of endearment wasn’t something that would make him flinch in surprise at the “intimate” gesture.

then there was diluc during the previously stated “narrow ‘night.’” the rare times that he would come home, greeted by you and his staff, with neither loads of paperwork to file in his study, justice that needed to be brought, nor any excuse to further disorder (or “improvise” as he preferred to dub it as such) his sleeping schedule, you’ve physically pushed him upwards to your shared sleeping quarters, as if he would start dashing away at the slight chance you went easy on him. however, this wasn’t something that ever bothered the flaming redhead—in fact, diluc found it rather endearing.

to say that most, if not all of his servants didn’t greatly care about his well-being would naturally be a flat-out ruse, yet it was somewhat pleasant to witness someone be concerned over the worrying inconsistency of his slumber’s hours that wasn’t under his payroll.

so, without prior thinking, he willingly subjects to your adamant attitude, causing this whole “operation: get diluc to sleep like a normal person” (or gdtslanp for short) to become quite effortless than you made it out to be in your mind.

from dinner to a bath to pulling him to the bed you’ve partly occupied, his empty side all ready for him, it seemed that “forcing” him to comply with this “pampering” gradually turned easier every second—not that it really required any work in the first place.

“really, love, you shouldn’t feel the need to concern yourself with something so trivial,” diluc’s face morphed into a small, soft smile, chuckling at your behavior. his crimson hair that was no longer in his usual low-ponytail, instead held down. though mostly dry since he bathed at least an hour ago, the tips were still wet. “i can assure you that i can be responsible with my sleeping patterns.”

“well now, i thought you were the master diluc! i shouldn’t expect you to think i would fall for such empty words,” you retorted, in spite of well knowing that really, your significant other had nothing to do. perhaps it was so rare that you couldn’t help but feel defensive—maybe this was some sort of dream. “stay here, i wouldn’t want you running off to secretly go to the city again, would i?”

that was a scenario that happened one too many times, it was only once, but that doesn’t really matter. although your theatrics were a bit... excessive, in the end, this wasn’t really such an enormous deal to get all fussy about. with the amount of roles diluc took on relating to keep mondstadt both safe and its economy afloat, it was kind of reasonable that the man would pull a few hours from his sleep to work.

however, tonight wasn’t that night. he was going to sleep. just like what a normal person did.

and sleep he did.

surprisingly, it didn’t take him long to hit the hay the moment he was aware the lights vaulted on the ceiling went out (courtesy of you). he even let out a slightly inaudible snore! you didn’t even get the chance to say a soft, quiet “good night.” maybe he took a few more hours off his sleep schedule than you originally believed.

“good night, ‘luc,” you whispered, smiling to yourself as his nose nuzzled into your neck, slowly growing tired yourself. closing your eyes, your last sight being diluc’s face.

that was until a few hours later.

enter, the quote unquote “narrow night” persona.

you awoke to a rather loud groan filling the room from none other than diluc himself. with yourself curled right next to him, it seemed almost impossible to sleep through that noise. however, despite your mind being a bit more than agitated at the moment, you still had at least an ounce of worry.

“...’luc?” you question, morning voice kicking in even though it was the dead of night. his body warmth seemed to practically blaze throughout his body, even more than usual.

diluc’s body slightly shuffled, his arms tightening around you as if he was trying to suffocate you, his temperature burning through his clothes and into your skin.

“mmhhrghh...” his incomprehensible words had distress subtly laced around them, though not to the point they would go under your radar. whatever he was dreaming of, it was enough to cause you to be more than wide awake now.

“hey, c’mon... wake up.”

as if the red-haired man was actually fully conscious, a few moments later he replied, “...no.”

you didn’t have the time to roll your eyes, mostly attributable to the fact that it appeared that said time was gradually shrinking due to your significant other’s death grip on your torso.

“diluc... please...” you practically begged. the darknight hero is always on his guard after all, apparently even in his slumber, his most vulnerable state. probably something you should probably scold him for not placing enough trust in you—but for now, that wasn’t exactly on your mind.

in a split second, the archons themselves managed to take heed and indulge in your silent, countless of prayers to get this man off of you before he wakes up to a lifeless corpse beside him.

a rather loud gasp escaping from his lips, his orange-red eyes stretched out and how he jolted upwards to sit up signaled his awaken status. the poor guy’s pants were more than audible, his chest rising and falling at a concerningly quick rate. all of a sudden, sweat beads became more discernible. his expression was in a state of panic.

almost immediately, his eyes were directed towards you, as if you were the one that just woke up from the nightmare.

“y/n, are you alright?” diluc inquired, concern flooding his widened eyes, disregarding his cold sweat. the rare expression that was other than his usual nonchalant display of emotions would’ve, under normal circumstances, cause you flamboyantly swoon in adoration and delight (much to his embarrassment, both in public and in private). however, you couldn’t help yet act differently in this scenario.

“...love?” he asked for your attention once more, his worry slightly growing when you refused to respond. his calloused hands that were the result of many years of prolonged use of his claymore softly grasped on your cheek. at the intimate gesture, it felt impossible to feel not feel guilty on what you were about to do. “are you okay- ouch-!”

the flick to the forehead wasn’t at all anticipated, making it seemingly hurt more than it did.

“you complete idiot,” you laughed, pecking his forehead in the area where you inflicted a slightly red and sore spot grow on diluc’s forehead. though already more than (read: not at all) accustomed to your various affections, it appeared as though one of the weaker displays of your endearment made him heat up, completely flustered. “worry about yourself more... have you seen yourself?”

you grabbed his arm and pulled it up to his view for emphasis.

“you’re paler than usual! just a minute ago, you were practically burning up into a crisp!” you pointed out, albeit rather loudly. it was a miracle that none of diluc’s staff barged into his sleeping quarters out of pure concern in the next few minutes. “forget me—what about you?”

your previously aggressive tone faltered into a more soft one, but the concern you felt over your boyfriend didn’t leave you.

“they’re just nightmares... i’ve had them for as long as i can remember,” of course, diluc blatantly lied on that very sentence. he wasn’t about to spill his guts out on the source of his dreams—he couldn’t just tell you that his late father’s death still haunts him to this day. that isn’t the emotional baggage that is obligatory to unpack at the moment, especially when he’s supposed to “relax.”

fortunately for the redhead, you didn’t bother to attempt to pry into his vague explanation. instead, you opted to lay down on your shared bed once more, tugging on the collar of his shirt to bring him down with you.

“...i think it’s because you fell asleep before i did,” you came to your own conclusion, making diluc crack a smile. that didn’t make sense at all! no matter, he was quick to adapt to his new position, circling his arms around your torso like before, perching his chin above your head.

not bothering to question how you decided this was the reason for his nightmares, diluc made himself comfortable while you pondered more on the possible causes, then stopped to nod to yourself, finally confident in your thoughts.

“yeah. that’s it.”

in reality, that wasn’t it, and you were well aware of the that. you weren’t stupid, even if you did a seemingly good job of acting like it. you may not know exactly the cause of your significant other’s horrible dreams, but that doesn’t mean you could just brush it off like nothing. the poor man’s strong actions were just too drastic to be ignored.

however, you can’t demand answers out of diluc either. he has no obligation to indulge in your curiosities after all.

so, little did you know, like him, you deceived him as well. this was a conversation for another time, no matter if it’s days, weeks, years, perhaps even the next morning. you were supposed to get diluc to sleep not in the usual ungodly hours he would’ve if you hadn’t “intervened.”

“well, what do you suppose we do?” diluc asked, his ruby-colored eyes peering down at you.

“well, we sleep, that’s for certain,” you chuckled, staring at him back. it would’ve been rather uncomfortable to look at had the bedroom have another light source other than the spilling moonlight from the window. “but we’ll do it together.”

not arguing against your stupid, maybe even childish solution, he changed his position from your head and settled near your neck, his vibrant hair now tickling your face a bit.

“let’s get to it, then.”

Hi! This is probably going to sound very rambly but I'm really confused and my thoughts are all over the place

The Ricardian xenophobia and anti-Welsh prejudice against Henry VII's ascension is so sickening to see, but it's also ... extremely baffling? In my opinion, there's no other reason it could have originated other than Ricardian double standards.

Because..the Yorkists *also* had Welsh heritage. Edward IV emphasized his Welsh lineage as much Henry VII did and much earlier (highlighting his descent from Llewellyn, utilizing the prophecies of Cadwaladr and the struggle between the Red and White Dragon, etc). The first Welshman to be ennobled since Owain Glyndwr’s fight for freedom (William Herbert) was during his reign, and the fact that very few Welshmen bothered to obtain letters of denizenship during that time (literally *one* person from 1467—1483, and while one is obviously still too many, it's a significant drop from his predecessors and should absolutely be noted in a positive way) is a clear indication that he did not make much use of the Penal Code. Which is a good thing, obviously! Yet for some reason, this is conveniently ignored, even though we know for a fact that David Powel believed that Henry VIII’s Welsh heritage was from his mother Elizabeth of York rather than his father.

The Yorkists *also* had Irish heritage through Elizabeth de Burgh, Countess of Ulster & wife of Lionel of Antwerp, which is also conveniently ignored for ... reasons.

And the comparison between Elizabeth of York’s “English Plantagenet blood” versus Henry VII’s “Tudor blood” which I have seen from some Ricardians is so bizarre to me. Apart from her Welsh and Irish connections through her father as discussed above, Elizabeth of York’s grandmother was from Luxemburg. Her grandfather began his career as a simple English knight. The Woodvilles, as usual, are simultaneously vilified and entirely disregarded when talking about the supposed "end of the Plantagenets.

So like...I'm a little confused WHY people assume that Henry VII's ascension heralded this massive change in terms of nationality or bloodline? Like you mentioned, he was also directly descended from Edward III. His grandmother was the Queen of England, his uncle was the King of England and his mother was one of the wealthiest English heiresses of her time. And Owen Tudor was given letters of English denizenship after his marriage to Catherine of Valois, which would have passed to his sons and grandson.

Of course, when talking about the Plantagenets/Yorkists, I mainly focused on Edward IV and his children, which probably why it's barely taken into account. When people fantasize about the so-called “purity” of the Plantagenets and Yorkists, they’re mostly (99.9% of the time, tbh) talking about Richard III, the emblem of "Englishness" (🤮) in the Victorian era and other eras (although he's certainly not the only one - Henry V, Henry IV to an extent, Edward III, Richard Lionheart and Henry II are all viewed in a very similar way), and mindlessly swallowing Richard’s own propaganda again Henry VII.

(While this isn't completely related, I wouldn't feel comfortable sending this ask without it so I hope it's okay and it doesn't get too long. To be honest: the Tudors are ALSO seen as symbols of English nationalism by an overwhelming majority. They are probably the most famous and well-known English dynasty; a vast number of English history books literally start with the year 1485; the red-and-white Tudor rose is one of the most memorable symbols of the English monarchy; and a vast number of people view that era as the "golden age" of England; Henry VIII and Elizabeth I Tudor are probably the most well known English monarchs of all time. So I certainly don't feel comfortable believing that there's a one-sided negative view against them because that's objectively not true; they're seen in a very positive manner by the vast majority of people. Which is why the contrary claims are so confusing to me - they're so vehement, but they also make no sense whatsoever, and they're completely opposite from the positive and glorified view that - overwhelmingly imo, at least internationally - opposes them)

Hi! Sorry for taking so long to reply! I must admit that I lost you there in the end (sorry) but I think I got the gist of your ask. There are a couple of views regarding the 'Welshness' of the Tudors. Some people disregard it entirely because of the things you said by the end of your ask: Henry VIII's break with Rome and Elizabeth I's triumph against the Spanish invasion/armada have been regarded as hallmarks of the making of British (and by British, read: English) culture, as much as Henry V's fight against the French, for example. Of course, Henry VIII and Elizabeth I were not (culturally at least) Welsh, so I would find it equally weird to claim that 'Welsh' was the defining Tudor trait.

As Dr Adam Chapman highlighted in this podcast episode, there was no such thing as 'Wales' as a well-defined country. Welsh identity was cultural, political and based on language. What made Henry VII Welsh was not some x-times removed ancestor, but the fact that he spent his formative years 'in the most Welsh place imaginable' (William Herbert's household), that he most likely spoke Welsh, famously enjoyed Welsh culture (Welsh mead, Welsh music, openly promoted the cults and celebrations of Welsh saints such as Saint David & Saint Armel), promoted Welsh servants, and the fact that he was embraced as Welsh by the Welsh themselves.

But mostly, I think many people do not know that the Tudors were originally Welsh at all! Mostly, people who bemoan that aspect — even if, technically, only one Tudor monarch was Welsh — are the ones who like to romanticise Richard as the last true bastion of Englishness such as Philippa Gregory, Rosemary Jarman, John Ahsdown-Hill, Sandra Worth etc. It is ironic, as you said, because the Yorkists also had Welsh heritage, and when push comes to shove you'll find plenty of ricardians saying Richard was 'more Welsh' than Henry VII because of some ancestor x-times removed, even though Henry had a Welsh grandparent, was born in Wales, was raised in Wales, and grew up in a Welsh-speaking household where Welsh cultural traditions were held. Apparently, being Welsh is terrible unless it's time to say Henry VII was fake Welsh or was less Welsh than the Yorkists.

(never mind that Henry VII was also descended from Llewellyn the Great)

It doesn't matter if they don't consider Henry VII to have been very Welsh (or Welsh at all) because suddenly being Welsh is too cool for such an uncool guy like Henry Tudor. The Welsh people of his time viewed him as Welsh. He had all the right conditions to compete for the prophetic mab darogan title as explained here, and that's something considering a part of the Welsh people had been willing to accept even the Yorkists for the title at the time they were against the Lancastrian crown. Edward IV explored that advantage on some occasions, especially when it came to legitimising his rule via prophetic discourse.

However, as stated by Gruffydd Aled Williams, if Edward IV 'did not excite overmuch enthusiasm among the Welsh bards' (in the number of poems produced), it seems like Richard did not even come close to that. It's not that we find very few poems praising Edward's brother (I wonder if there are actually any), it's that the Welsh poets were especially harsh on Richard — he was compared to King Herod (who ordered the killing of the first-born sons), and called unchristian names such as 'saracen'. He was also called ableist names such as 'little Richard', 'deformed Richard', 'little raider', 'small Richard', 'feeble-bodied', 'little ape' and so on. From 1483 onwards, the bards who once had their loyalties divided between Jasper Tudor and Edward IV/William Herbert, unanimously united in Henry Tudor's favour.

Again, cultural identity mattered a lot, which seems to be conveniently forgotten when they decide that it's actually cool to be Welsh. Most of the time they don't seem to see it as good quality, though. The aspect of cultural identity matters when they like to explore the idea that the Tudors were not culturally English, so they didn't know and respect English traditions. It's not uncommon to see the claim that Chilvary died with Richard at Bosworth — Sandra Worth's “at Bosworth Field died the Age of Chivalry” — as if Henry VII didn't extensively engage with chilvaric performance (x, x) and discourse (x).

In my opinion, the real problem with this kind of discourse and re-imagination of the past is, of course, the very real anti-immigrant and English nationalist sentiment that has gained so much currency in Brexit-era England. Henry VII & his family are dead, they can't be offended by any of that — the immigrants who are associated with diseases according to that kind of rhetoric, for example, are not.

I don’t know if this was a direct response to my post or just some general musings, but I want to put it out there that I absolutely don’t think Rhys is an uwu baby who does no wrong. I also don’t think he’s anything like Jack. Those seem to be the two extremes of Rhys characterisation in this fandom and they make me want to bang my head against my screen, haha.

And I actually don’t see any problem with his character evolution from Tales > BL3 > New Tales. Though, I’m not sure what aspect of him you’re highlighting as OOC, so I’m unable to comment further on that.

I will say that I think Rhys’s arc as a whole has been an evolution of corporate trashbag to a fundamentally good person. Why I’m saying this is, as I’ve discussed in another post—Rhys using Atlas 2.0 to resurrect Promethea, a planet that was worse than Pandora, to one of the wealthiest in the galaxy is a level of genuine philanthropy matched by no other character in the series. Sure, the Borderlands writers probably accidented their way into that arc for Rhys, but hey, they did it! It’s canon.

The nuance here, of course, is that all this is not the same thing as altruism. Alongside what he’s done for Promethea, Rhys is still a capitalist who runs a company that builds items to kill people. His scenes with Anu demonstrate that he is not interested in pursuing other revenue streams, either, because he has found his moneymaker. That alone is enough to warrant personal critique; there’s no need to elevate that by making (IMO, baseless) comparisons to Jack.

Weltempfänger (World Receiver) (2018) - Isa Genzken

I started in the modern art area specifically in the section with post-war german art mostly engaging w/ the war in some way, which is neat, but the presentation left me kind of wondering who had curated it. there was a lot of vague language and i'm not sure that any of the artists were like... jewish...?

there were like three pieces by a sculptor who is apparently one of the top 1000 wealthiest men in germany though. lmao. didn't take a picture of those though.

anyway then was the rest of the modern art.

There was a section on modern art by marginalized groups which included some indigenous artists, black artists, and stuff, that was pretty cool.

I was a little bit psyched to see this. I didn't check what they had ahead of time so I had no idea they had in person Rothko paintings (two of them! though i only took a pic of this one) I always liked his color paintings since I learned about it in college so it was really neat to see this up close and be able to see the like... texture of the paint and stuff.

I thought these were neat. Glasswork has such an interesting feel.

There was this as well—Shaman's Soul Catcher (2000)—by the same glass artist plus underneath it an 1860 Tsimshian bone soul catcher, as a contrast/comparison. Both very pretty in very different ways.

The places I've lived have often had coastal tribal art in various areas but going to the museum and seeing a lot of the artworks in this section was neat because at least half of the stuff on display has abalone shell so it's very sparkly in person. the public carvings and paintings outside usually don't have abalone lol

There was a lot of Native art from all up and down the coast from like, oly to canada, which was really cool to see. I'm not sure how much of it is donated by the tribes or not but I know that's a thing—the MAC in Spokane does that. Plus there's the Burke here which has the Native American Advisory Board. But there's still a chance some of the stuff at the SAM is like... less than ethical.

it seems like most of their stuff is probably ethical but there's always a chance some of it isn't, esp since the section on Native art mentions that "grave goods and certain categories of cultural objects" may be repatriated which kind of implies some don't have to be.

more on the house posts and their history. there was another pair (two big faces stacked) on the opposite side of the room I didn't take a pic of. All of the stuff is very pretty but obviously there's a lot of shitty history—like potlatch bans and houses being dismantled—that's just kind of inextricable in both the US and Canada.

adjacent to the large local native art there was a section of Australian Dreaming art as well, with a small short documentary/interview with one of the artists playing nearby.

Kalipinypa Rockhole (2003) - Elizabeth Marks Nakamarra

I only took a picture of this one. It's very striking. The entrance to this area had a hot pink wall with a black and white painting and then inside was all very dark walls. I think it's one of those things that's best in person (lots of art is, really)

nearby was some Japanese art and they had a whole case of netsuke

Seated Monkey Poking at a (Turtle? I think... got cut off lol) (ca. 1770) - Okatomo

It was hard to photograph cause they're so small and in a glass case but they all had such fine details, it was neat to look at them and see all the little tiny lines

There were quite a few, ivory and wood, plus fish sculpture... this one didn't photograph very well though. the fish is really beautiful.

I like these deer-shaped bronze water droppers too. There were a bunch of them of various sizes.

Concretion of Chinese porcelain fragments and coral from a shipwreck, 17th/early 18th century

There were sections on Japanese art, Chinese art, and some Vietnamese porcelain and I thought this was neat. I didn't take a photograph but directly next to this was a modern porcelain sculpture that was definitely intended to be a pairing in overall form and shape and material but still very different.

Ivory, ostrich egg, and silver pieces. I think this section was meant to be a kind of comparison of similar art forms separated by location and temporality—the ways similar forms convergently exist in different locales and time periods. There was an insane-looking Tiffany silver goblet near a much older and simpler silver goblet. Or tankard? it may have been tankards. I didn't take a picture.

next place I went was the ancient art cause that was the nearest bathroom lol—actually it was next to the Italian and Christian European art which I didn't take any photos of. I like medieval and renaissance European art fine but after like. 2 or 3 hours at the museum I was more interested in the Ancient Egyptian and Greek stuff lol.

like this 1st century snake bracelet from Roman Egypt. Phone camera refused to focus though... But like, hey that's wild, that bracelet is probably almost 2000 years old. it's so pretty and i wonder what the red coloration in the lines is. maybe it's a gold alloy? or pigment?

they had a bunch of Roman glasswork as well which is always fun to see. Lots of people think of pristine white marble (it was painted!) when they think of Classical art but glass was such a distinctive thing in those periods—the iridescence and color especially

They had some Greek vases as well, and this Etruscan krater lid with sirens painted on it, which was pretty cool.

Babylonian clay foundation peg with cuneiform inscription ca. 2400 BC—think about that. That's like. over 4000 years old. Crazy.

next to the Egyptian art was Islamic art, and I really liked this silver pen and ink holder. It had so many fine details. The entire section was really beautiful. for some reason this also ended up my highest resolution photo? lmao? i don't understand my phone camera at all.

R Town.

A stupid name, for a stupid town. But this stupid town, once upon a town, became my safe haven.

In all actuality, it always was my safe haven. I just didn't realize it until I moved here on my own. Wanting to get away from it all. Wanting to leave the past behind, stop the constant comparisons of my life to others, and start over.

That's how it started out, at least.

When I first moved here, a couple of months ago, I felt set for life. I lived for free in the doctor's office spare bedroom. I was being fed, clothed, and sheltered by the kind man who owned the clinic. He never asked anything of me, and the only thing I asked of him was the ability to survive.

He saw a depressed, lonely kid like me and took me in without any hesitation. He compared me to his son a lot. Saying I was sassy, but had a good heart when it counted. I was okay with this type of comparison at first, since he seemed to love his son. Now, I'm not sure how he made this type of comparison, especially now knowing his only son. That man isn't good-hearted at all. The complete opposite actually.

The doctor's son's name is Liam. A spiteful, money-hungry, ungrateful guy that only saw the positives in life when it came to making money.

I'm not surprised, completely at least. Everyone in this town craves to gain. Whether it's from money, power, or dreams that they never got the chance to chase after because they were born in a town like this.

The doctor's name was Larry. Was.

I feel the tears run down my cheeks as I hear that word echo in my head. His name was. Not is.

He died five days ago. I was the one who found him. On the cold ground, alone, and with his hand clutching his chest. A heart attack the coroner ruled it. Hell, I would have a heart attack too if I was the only doctor for a terrible and small town like this. Widowed for over a decade and the only proof of that marriage being great was an ungrateful son that only came to visit once a year for his mother's death anniversary.

I know what your thinking. Maybe their relationship wasn't that great, or what if the death of his mother really hurt and he didn't want to return to the town he grew up in. But that wasn't the truth at all. After his father put him through medical school, paying every bill that came from that school, by the way, Liam didn't even say thank you. He just left his father. Alone, and hurting from the loss of his wife and now the loss of his son from his life.

And now with Liam's loss of his father too, the first thing the guy does when finding out the news: is kick me out. Claiming his inherited property and not giving a shit about the memory of his father there.

I see the yellow tape, and clear plastic wrap around the place every day. He's changing everything his father built. And better yet, sold it to the town's wealthiest man- Taehyung Kim. Also known as the nastiest and cruelest man to live ever in this town.

Both Taehyung and Liam are changing every little thing about the place. Keeping it a doctors office, since it was the town's only nearby clinic, but getting rid of every memory. From the blue rooftop that Larry told me he and his wife put in themselves, to the ruined carpet in what was my room from spilling hot chocolate on it. He gave it to me the night he took me in.

That night was similar to the one right now. Raining, and cold, and me feeling completely alone. But unlike last time, I don't have a savior. I don't have a kind old man that's willing to take in a runaway like me. No one in this town would do that to an "outsider."

That's what they call me, the outside. Even though I've been living here for half a year, I'm an outside because I'm the most recent person that moved into this town. And I'm most likely the only person that's going to move here for the next decade. Forever claimed the unloved outsider.

I squeeze my eyes shut, and curse this town. All the power-hungry, dick bags that live in it. I stand from my place on the ground. I was crouched, leaning against the Jeon game store, staring at the wrapped-up doctor's office that was once owned by my friend, for what felt like hours.

This is what I've been doing every day and night for the last five days. During the day I'll pray some kids will "drop" some cash for me to play games. I play until Jungkook, the store owner, kicks me out for not having any more cash, and then I sit here, hoping for someone to take pity on me again.

The person who ends up taking pity on me though, I'll learn to regret accepting tomorrow.

I begin to walk around the Jeon game store building, to my sleeping spot I made in between two trash cans when I stop in my tracks when the gaming store's front door flies open.

"Get the fuck out of here Taehyung! Your not wanted here," Jungkook yells from his spot near the door.

"Come on, Jungkook," Taehyung says with his usual millionaire smile. "Your the last building in town I don't own. Wouldn't you want to collect the money I'm offering you, and start over somewhere else? Who knows, maybe you'll find the gamer nerd girl of your dreams."

I see Jungkook's face turn beat red. Not because of Taehyung's comment on "the gamer girl of his dreams," but because this isn't the first time Taehyung has wanted or propositioned to buy his game store. In fact, I've heard this argument between the two business owners hundreds of times now. Taehyung just won't take no for an answer.

"I'm warning you Taehyung-"

"Relax, friend," Taehyung Interrupts. "We're both business owners here. And I think we are both smart enough to know I-" He steps forward until he's so close to Jungkook's face that their breaths are visibly mingling with the cold temperature. "Always get what I want."

Jungkook's had enough. The intimidation tactic by Taehyung won't work on the gamer. He pushes Taehyung away from him, the businessman only backing up a few feet, but enough for Jungkook to slam the door behind him. Ending their conversation without another word.

Taehyung scoffs at Jungkook's childish way of denying his offer. But can you really blame him? I wouldn't want to sell my lifelong dream to some man that believes having his name on every building of a town makes him the one in charge.

Taehyung looks up at the game store's sign. "Jeons Games," it reads. He squints at the sign, probably curing at it. He then runs his fingers through his now soaked hair from the rain, and turns in my direction. His eyes widen for a second when he notices me, obviously not realizing I was standing there.

It was just then that I realize I'd been eavesdropping the entire time, not even thinking about what sort of repercussions would come from listening in on Taehyung's "business" as I've heard him say a few times while talking to Larry before. I start to turn and follow my once destined route into the ally way.

"Hey stop!"

I pick up my speed, hoping Taehyung would just leave me alone after going down a dark ally. But he doesn't. I'm about two feet away from my usual sleeping spot when I feel a hand grab my shoulder. I'm turned completely around, and gasp when I see Taehyung has followed me into the ally.

I didn't think Taehyung would do such a thing. He's dripping in wealth with his expensive suit and shoes. So going into a dark ally is usually the last thing people like him would want to do.

"Are you deaf? I said stop."

I feel my anger bubble within me. I don't like being told what to do, especially by power-hungry rich boys like Taehyung.

"I heard you. I just didn't respond." Taehyung's eyebrows shoot up, clearly not thinking I would respond to him so cruelly.

"Wow. You got a mouth on you kid." I see Taehyung's lips switch up in a smile. Why? I'm not really sure. "I was just going to ask what you were doing. Your names Jimin, right?"

I squint at the wealthy man. Clearly suspicious of why a guy like him would ever want to talk to a guy like me, but I nod nonetheless. "I saw you crouching outside the game store before I even went in. That was an hour ago. Do you got nothing better to do then to sulk about the old man's death?"

My anger was bubbling before, but now it has just overflowed. No one, and I mean no one, but I understood how kind and special that man was. And for this rich bitch to shit on that "old man" as he called him, when he knew nothing about him, made my blood boil.

"Listen here you - you money whore."

I jab a finger into Taehyung's chest, and he fucking smiles. Fuck him and fuck this!

I continue, loudly, "That old man was the kindest guy in this entire stupid town. And you bought his office and decided to reconstruct it without even thinking about the memories that place had! It was the only place I fucking had. The only decent memories I have was with that 'old man' were inside that office. So you can shove the money you got from the place right up your ass!"

Taehyung starts to laugh at my last comment. I falter at his weird reaction to my insults. Not understanding what was funny about anything I just said.

"I prefer to give, not receive. But I'll take your insults in shorts." I feel my face heat up at what Taehyung was implying. My embarrassment gets the best of me, and I look away from Taehyung altogether. This must of just fired Taehyung up, because now he has the audacity to say, "You're a virgin, ain't you?"

I don't answer or look at him. I just continue looking wide-eyed at my beaten-up blue shoes. Hoping he'll leave the question alone, and this conversation entirely.

Why the fuck won't he just leave me alone?

"Mhmm. Touchy subject, outsider?"

"Don't call me that," I rush out.

"Yeah, yeah whatever. Listen, your homeless right?" This time I look up at him. It wasn't exactly a secret. Everyone in town knew I was some sort of runaway. I moved into this town with only the clothes on my back, so after the old man died and I was kicked out, there was only so much that could happen to me in the end.

"I'm going to take your silence as a yes. What if-" Taehyung inches closer to me, his Gucci or some sort of expensive brand cologne wafting in my face. "I had a proposition for you."

I raise an eyebrow at his words. What would Taehyung want from a homeless runaway like me? I have no property to sell. The most money I got is two dollars, and even if I had money before today the only type of interaction I got from Taehyung in the past was judgmental stares. Yup, doesn't make sense.

"What kind of 'proposition'?" I ask. Taehyung steps away from me, puts his finger against his lips, and starts scanning his eyes up and down my frame. Making my skin crawl underneath his heated gaze. It's then I realize what he meant by "proposition."

I was about to scream out a big fat screech of a HELL NO... until Taehyung said a number.

"A thousand dollars." My eyes go wide. "A thousand dollars to be mine for the night. If you end up coming back for more well-" he smiles with shiny white teeth "-the pricing can be altered."

I fucking falter. I actually fucking falter at this proposition. Never, in my wildest dreams, did I think I would be contemplating a yes or no answer to this question. But I'm broke, homeless, and don't have money for food. The last time I ate was a half-eaten muffin I stole from the bakery down the streets garbage. That was two days ago.

I look away from Taehyung, actually thinking this through. One thing for sure, even if I do say yes, I would never come back for a second go-around with him. But that's not the issue... Do I really want to sell my virginity off for money? And not to just some stranger, but to a man that's taken over this town with nothing, but his money and conniving tongue. No - I shouldn't. But I need food and-

I hear a finger snap in my face, and it's Taehyung snapping to get my attention. I don't know if he said anything, but I don't care anyway. My answer should be no. My answer-

"How about 1,500?"

What. The. Fuck. What the actual fuck! I'm sweating bullets now, but luckily the rain is hiding this embarrassing reaction I am having from hearing these numbers out loud.

"1,500 to be mine for the night. I won't tell a soul, and I could give a shit less if you tell anyone in town. Most people in this town are either fucking people for money, or spending money to get fucked anyway."

I don't know why I said it, but the first thing that came to mind after he explained this town's horniness was, "I'm not a whore."

Taehyung smiles again. He kinda looks, relieved? But then again he did just confront me on being a virgin, so I very much doubt that. "What will it be, Jimin?"

Taehyung steps forward, and I step back until my body hits the brick wall of the game store. Taehyung cages me with his arm above my head, looking down at me. My body's reaction is to shake uncontrollably. I try to tell it to stop fucking moving but to no avail. Taehyung is so close to me that if he were to move ever so slightly our noses would touch.

"Will you be mine tonight?" His voice is now dripping with lust. Five seconds ago his voice was all business. Even talking about the opportunity to prostitute myself to him, he was sounding like it was a business opportunity instead of a body buying opportunity. Now... his voice is hitting places I don't want it to hit. Making my face red, and blood no longer boil but instead traveling to places I don't want it to.

And I hate myself for it. And I hate myself even more for my next words too.

"Yes."

The Taehyung mansion. Truthfully, I avoided this place like the plague. It just reminded me of a time when I lived in a similar place, and had a similar life to Taehyung. A life I ran away from and don't plan to look back on.

That's right. Me, Park Jimin, used to be a rich bitch just like Taehyung. But I gave that all away. I was done with being bribed by my parents to pretend to be someone I wasn't, and I was done with being controlled by my parents and their money. I didn't want handouts of money from others to be my life.

Ironic, isn't it?

Now I'm at the Taehyung mansion to let the owner do whatever he wants to me for money. How did my life lead to this? To be rushed in through the too big to be real doors of the mansion by a power-hungry owner. To then being rushed into an office without much time to look around. But I didn't need to look around much, I can tell Taehyung is the only one that lives here and the only people that go in and out of this place are businessmen and servants.

Fuck, what am I doing here?

When the office doors get shut behind me, Taehyung lets go of my hand that's he's been holding to drag me through his home. When he first grabbed my hand, after stepping out of his luxury car, I cringed at how warm it was. I wanted his hand to feel disgusting, and to feel like hands coming from Satan himself. But that's not how they felt. They felt warm, and safe. Everything they really weren't.

As Taehyung steps around me, he smirks in my direction before he directs himself to the liquor cabinet he has near his desk. I swallow the lump in my throat, and try my best to stop the full-body tremble I'm having right now.

Just think about the money, Jimin. Your only here for the money. And once you get that money, you can leave here and forget this ever happened.

But even as I tell myself that, and try to breathe, rather heavily mind you, It's not calming me down at all.

I hear Taehyung put ice into a glass, and then I hear the pouring of some type of alcohol. All I see is his back right now, so I wouldn't know what it was. It wasn't until Taehyung raised the bottle above his head that I saw what it was. Whiskey - most likely an expensive brand too.

Taehyung shakes the bottle over his head. "Do you want a glass?"

I swallow and blink a few times. Hoping I don't stutter my following words. "I'm fine. Thank you."

Taehyung turns around then, setting the bottle down on the glass table he poured the contents of his drink at. He swirls the drink in his hand like some mob boss instead of a businessman, then raises an eyebrow at me. "You sure you don't want to rethink that?"

I scrunch my eyebrows together, clearly confused by what he's implying. And I guess he loved my reaction because then he smiles. He downs his drink in one gulp, sets the glass down, then walks straight over to me. The second I start to back up, he stops in his tracks.

"The liquor could loosen you up. You seem..." He scans my body up and down, sending chills down my arms and neck, thinking of his next words carefully. "Tense."

It's a statement, not a question. And it's a true statement.

"How can I not be?" I hear myself say before I realize it. Taehyung gets closer to me again, but this time I don't retreat. I can't be playing cat and mouse with him right now by stepping away. I have a job to do after all if I can even call it that.

Taehyung lifts his hand, and I flinch when it gets in my eyes view. He pauses, his hand inches from touching my face.

I watch as his hand slowly grazes my jaw with the tips of his fingers. Following the crease of my jaw bone to my chin. I watch Taehyung bite his lip, eyes staring right at my mouth, and I clench my fists beside me. Not knowing if my body wants to punch him or touch him in return. Hating myself for the confusion.

I know Taehyung is attractive. If he had a better personality and wasn't so obsessed with land and power, I could see myself loving this experience with him. But that's not how he is. And I hate that my body is not hating his touches or getting the memo of who he is.

He slowly moves his fingers from my chin up until his thumb reaches my bottom lip. His warm fingers making my lips want to kiss the soft surface, but I refrain as much as I can. Rejecting my body's nasty wants.

Taehyung gently pulls my bottom lip, a soft sound coming from my dry lips detaching themselves. "Has anyone ever told you, you got a real fuckable mouth?"

If my face wasn't red before, it definitely is now. The embarrassment from his words overtook my sexual drive for a moment.

I say, "Has anyone ever told you, your a real pervert?"

Taehyung snorts, then he takes his hand away from my mouth. My lips now missing the feeling of his skin against them. I shake my head, wanting to go back to before Taehyung's smell and touch was ever a part of my senses.

"Alright... Straight to business then."

Before I had any time to react, I was getting pulled by my arm to the other side of his desk. Taehyung kicks his chair away, and my front hip bones are then being pressed against the hardwood. I hiss and make a 'Ack' noise when he grabs my hair. Pulling my head back against his shoulder. His tongue runs a strip up my neck all the way to my ear. I feel his teeth bite my lobe, and I start to shake uncontrollably.

I can now feel the entire outline of Taehyung's body behind me, and I especially feel his hard dick pressing against the back of my ass. I'm now feeling a great deal of fear about all this. Before I did feel some fear, who doesn't have some nerves when knowing they're about to get fucked for the first time? But now, feeling him from behind me, I have to close my eyes and pretend it's not there. To pretend his very big dick isn't about to fuck me somewhere that's barely even been explored by myself.

My fear must have been clear on my face, because I feel Taehyung's hand in my hair lighten up a little. His teeth let go of my ear, and he whispers softly in my ear, "You are a virgin."

Again, he didn't ask. He stated, and his statement was true. 10 points to Taehyung for realizing the obvious!

I shut my eyes and say, "Y-yes." Not caring enough for the stutter and instead hoping my answer will make him be more gentle towards me. I already can tell Taehyung is in no way a gentle lover, who wants to care for you and make you enjoy this experience as much as he is going to.

This isn't a movie. He wants to fuck, and he will fuck whoever that's willing and on top of that doesn't care if you feel the same pleasure as him.

Taehyung sighs next to my ear, and I feel him lightly kiss my neck. Making me swallow in return. He lets go of my hair, instead grabbing onto the nape of my neck more gently than he did my hair. "Then I guess it's good for you to know: I've never had someone leave my bed... unsatisfied."

It doesn't help. It doesn't help at all because I think he's a fucking lier! His next words just prove me further, "Take off your clothes."

I clench my eyes shut, and breath in all the air I can muster. Starting with the buttons on my shirt, I slowly comply with his command. It felt like hours until I got all of my clothing off. I felt Taehyung's eyes from behind me watch everything I do. I don't look at him once. Looking at him now would make this to real. HEADCANON REGARDING ; FINNICK ODAIR

for a long time , i’ve not put much thought into the possibility of finnick being a career tribute . in fact , i didn’t even remember there being a mention of district 4 having any careers but , i’ve just looked on the hunger games wiki ( i know wikis aren’t always the most reliable source of information ) and it appears as though , due to it being one of the wealthiest districts in panem , district 4 does in fact potentially have career tributes . so , having spoken for a while with the lovely @handywolfman , i think it’s time i clear up the subject for my canon . finnick is a career tribute . now , i know not everyone will agree with this and that’s okay . that’s why headcanons tend to be personal to individuals .

let’s see ; finnick would have been trained in the fishing industry from a young age , as that is the resource that his district provides to the capitol . so he would have been well versed in everything that the process entails . and imagine that he’s spent a long time around mags - as in my headcanon she basically is his family ; his mother , his father and everyone else he could need - and though she has never been very materialistic , she still would have been granted a house in district 4′s victors’ village . practically growing up there would have been thrilling for finnick and would have accustomed him to a life of ( somewhat ) luxury in comparison to many others .

the actual act of becoming a career is a little murky in my mind . perhaps he was scouted , like a talented sports - person or perhaps he volunteered to - in his mind at least - make mags ( and alcide ) proud of him . he surely wouldn’t have grasped the full concept of what the games entail , given that mags made sure to shield him as best she could . which would go a ways to explaining his naivety in wanting to participate at such a young age .

my personal favourite reason for finnick volunteering as a career would have to be his kind heart . perhaps district 4 also have a system like 12 does where if you need food or favours , you have to put your name into the jar multiple times . if something like that is implemented in the poorer districts , why not the rich ones too ? because , surely not everyone is wealthy in district 4 , right ? perhaps finnick knew a boy whose name was in the jar many many more times than it should have been but he knew that boy wouldn’t survive in the games . it’s very reflective of the mags / annie situation in the quarter quell and having grown up with mags as one of his main influences , i can see finnick doing something like that for someone else .
