Hot take but Percy Jackson actually isn't anything like Harry Potter and the reason they're popularly compared is due to the mass mischaracterization and misenterpretation that leads to sanatization of Percy to turn him into a more standard protagonist despite the whole point his character being that he's NOT normal while Harry's is that he IS and that made him into a very bland and lowkey passive aggressive bigot that's an awful example for kids while Percy is the perfect role model.Like let's look them over.Percy:

Was born poor and never becomes rich

Is a child abuse victim with consistent trauma responses and unhealthy coping mechanisms all the way starting at The Lightning Thief

Beat up bullies as a kid,was targeted by them to begin with because he's neurodivergent and his teachers picked on him too

Has nothing but love and respect for his fellow minorities,women especially thanks to being a mama's boy with no positive older male figures in his life except Beckendorf

Is pessimistic,sardonic,anger issued,bad at socializing and gets embarrased to be overly open with his emotions but none of this turns him into a bad person but instead makes him realistic and relatable

And he's also kind,gentle,nurturing to the point of basically adopting younger demigods as his found siblings and pseudo-kids if they don't have positive adult figures in their lives already,encouraging,loyal to a literal fatal fault and has a distinctive and iconic sense of humor that never dosen't land

Didn't like Annabeth or Rachel for shallow reasons and instead for their personalities and only wasn't into Reyna because he was taken at the time and treats all three of them very nicely

Is an instigator who's driving point as our hero is taking down corrupted figures but also does activism for the lesser treated people in his world by helping out every time he gets a chance to,has one of his core trait's being that he's COMPLETELY devoid in power hunger and pretty arguably counts as an anarchist because of this

Relating to the sense of humor thing again,his whole PERSONALITY is distinctive-He's not just some fantasy protagonist,he's PERCY JACKSON.The name alone gives everybody who's read the books flashbacks to all his crazy ass shit(affectionate)and that's how you know you've got a well-written protagonist

And Percy is legitimately transfem-coded,because i've met so many trans women in the Pjo fandom and every single one of them without exception have said that she's a femme trans woman egg.This also applies to black/afrolatino folks and autistics in the fandom like me to a less near universal extent

While Harry:

Grew up middle class and then got riches out the ass when the series started

Is a very poor attempt at positive abuse survivor rep because he uses his mental health as an excuse to a huge dick with no consequences given to him afterward

Had no tormenters other than the Dursleys

A 'dosen't know better and refuses to learn' typa bigot with tons of passive aggressive remarks about girls and ableism and fatphobia thrown in too,not to mention racist moments like hating Dean for dating Ginny

Is the quintessential young male fantasy protagonist and this is exactly his problem because it makes him boring asf and we're dealing with so much fucking damage in the kids fantasy genre thanks to his musty ass

All his crushes were shallow(Only liked Cho for a pretty girljock and only noticed Ginny when she became one too and prioritizes looks and society's idea of 'coolness' on the other girls his age too like damn i wonder why he only ever saw Hermione as a sister,surely it can't be connected /s)

Never does actual justice fighting unless he's required to and don't tell me he shouldn't have needed to because this wasn't real life,it was a magics series so he should've fought evil on purpose like Percy did and so did Katniss Everdeen and the Pevensie Siblings and all the other actual good kids books protags.This genre is supposed to be a power fantasy for kids that they can be heroes too and Harry failed big time at his job just like he did at everything else

Again,he is VERY mediocre as a character but mediocrity sells and now we have a million clones of him instead of real mcs

Is part of exactly zero minorities,neither intentionally or accidentally,and that made him grow up to be a cop.Douchebag ass white straight boy Harry vs Autistic afrolatina transfemme slay Percy.No competition,Percy's punk so she'd kill Harry to earn her blue laces

BMC TUMBLR REMAKE (!!PLEASE READ THE WHOLE POST!!)

okaay if youve seen my recent posts youll know that we MIGHT be doing an actual remake of be more chill right here on tumblr dot com! run by me ofc but i might need help down the line so you can sign up for that. its gonna be a completely fan made thing like im talking singing voice acting drawing music editing everything

ive gotten quite a lot of positive reactions to that post so ive made a google form if youre interested in participating! options include major roles minor roles editors artists and more take your pick

if youre not the best at singing then you can sign up for ensemble, for example the bg voices in guy that id kinda be into. no worries at ALL if you cant sing or draw or anything, theres gonna be a speaking ensemble too, for example the overlapping shouting in the smartphone hour. you can pick more than one role, for example ensemble + visuals, cause this is not a very big fandom so we're gonna need duplicates but if you want a major character role i'd prefer if you just stick with that tbh. if you want a major character role you can also pick more than one character! you can specify you want to try for rich, the squip and brooke or whatever. youre not actually auditioning for those roles yet i just need to see if theres enough people to cover every role

Wait a second. So Rebels was an animated show and Ahsoka is live action but Ahsoka is the sequel to Rebels? Are you guys happy about this? Is the casting good and it is everything you hoped for?

As crazy as it sounds... yes. Despite Ahsoka Tano (a main character in The Clone Wars but just a supporting cast member in Rebels) being the title character, the series is very much a direct sequel to Rebels. Honestly, after watching the first two episodes, I have no idea how the showrunners could claim you "don't need to have seen Rebels to understand it." You very much do. It's not like Rebels itself, which was an introduction into the world of Star Wars through the eyes of a brand-new character. This literally picks up characters and plot lines from Rebels and carries on with the assumption you know what's happening.

Are we happy about it? I would say... at peace. We've known since 2020 the show was coming, and since last year that it would more or less be our Rebels sequel (although just how very much so was still a surprise, albeit a pleasant one). I think most of the Rebels fandom would agree with me that we wish the show had been animated. The actors (with the exception of Ahsoka herself, in my opinion) seem to have really studied the animated characters' mannerisms, and they do feel like the same characters, even if it's still very strange to hear them speaking in different voices. Overall, I'm satisfied and quite excited to see where it goes.

Unfortunately, I think that the series is a victim of the mindset that live action is superior to animation. Most of the wider Star Wars fandom and general population ignored Rebels when it aired, and even now a lot of casual fans are upset that they have to watch a KiDs' ShOw to understand what's going in a BIG IMPORTANT LIVE ACTION series like Ahsoka. And it's unfair. These characters are incredible, and so many people are only giving them attention now that they're in live action. They have so much rich history!

Anyway, I apologize for ranting! TL;DR, while I wish the show were animated, it's very clearly a love letter to Rebels and its fans, and I'm so happy that we're finally getting the sequel we've waited 5 and a half years for!

So yesterday I had a friend over to hang out, and we started talking about what film we could watch to pass the time and my friend suggested Harry Potter because apparently she was a fan (I didn't know because we've never talked about it before)

My friend isn't really a fandom person and also not on twitter or tumblr, so she had no idea about the controversies of the last couple of years. I know this because she's an ally and if she knew she definitely wouldn't be suggesting we watch it. She's not the kind of person that would still support industries and people that are bigoted and harmful towards others.

She just wasn't aware. So I told her about the transphobia and all the racism in the books and she was shocked and disgusted by it as I expected

But then she says: Didn't the author die a while ago?

me: ...No? I'm pretty sure she's still around. If she died tumblr would be going crazy with the news memes

hi friend, you still have the potential to be sued here in the US, even if you’re not using images. That’s a big part of why authors likes Anna Todd, scrubbed After (with all references to Harry’s name) from the internet when she started charging for it and before any publication would take an interest. (Before anyone comes for me, I’m sure the original has been saved by some third part somewhere. This is the internet after all. But the point remains if she were to be sued, she is able to claim that she did her due diligence by removing any and all content with any reference to Harry Styles from the internet BEFORE she received any payment.) The US is currently starting to crack down on copyright and intellectual property infringement. In large part due to the fact that so many people have received huge payouts over the last ten years. Unfortunately they’re not choosing to go after the ones that have actually gotten rich from the issue. And while the drivers might not care. Their management most certainly will. If you’re choosing to charge for your fiction it might be best to at the very least change names so you might have some form of deniability.

I'm not trying to go against your word, but rather wondering about the topic myself because it seems to me it's a huge gray area, so feel free to reach me on my private messages or on anon again if you want. But speaking about Anna Todd, technically she could still be sued even after scrubbing Harry's name from the story because there was still proof on the internet that it was a story about him, if we're talking about defamation it doesn't need to involve the monetization aspect, it's still defamation without it. This would mean that ANY RPF fanfiction is illegal and could be sued (which is not necessarly the case because theres the whole fair use thing).

We're talking about huge payouts, but I'm getting less than fifty dollars a month with Patreon lol would their team really come for me (a poor grad student) on behalf of a billionaire for getting less than fifty dollars a month to help pay school and medical bills? this would need a huge pr work too to make them seem good after doing something so crazy like this.

Talking about defamation, let's say I change names, but this Tumblr would still be up and everything else would easily show that it's about pilot X, this could still be considered illegal because you can tell who it is about. The reason why nobody comes for rpf is because 1) the money people are talking about is just a few bucks most of the time, and 2) it's exactly this real people's FICTION, there's not much to talk about defamation of a worldwide artist when the content you're sharing is for a nich of less than one hundred people, it's not reasonable. I haven't found a past decision about something similar in the US court, if there is, please send it in, but other than that it's a huge speculation thing in my head, which only a judge could clarify.

Patreon and monetizing fanfiction is quite common in fandoms like Chris Evans', for example, and I haven't seen anything legal come from it yet. again because it's unreasonable for those artists to go after their own fans for taking less than a hundred dollars in content that clearly sets a fictional character that just happens to look and have the same name as them because more often than not it's set in an alternative universe.

i don't need a lot to be happy. jade sitting as autistically as possible on the kitchen counter means everything to me. he's just so easy to love, like a cat. also i really appreciate the way the show moved heaven and earth to make jade and tabby end up alone together for the night. the matthews house getting demolished + the new horror making it so that no one can be alone at night + jim leaving his family to go on his crazy adventure at the RV... im grateful i truly am

jade really took the supportive role to tabby's lead in the investigation and i love that for them. there's something so special to me about this dynamic, we're so used to genius guy detective + layman sidekick, seeing it flipped is so special to me. tabby is so awesome that the rich genius guy is actually her sidekick! love them sm

it's a long ask, but I hope you'll read this bec the ending of it is especially for you all. A bit personal in the middle, which if you'd like you can skip, I include that because I know nobody of my life would get it. So here goes nothing.

Why is it always one step forward, two steps back. Just as we get to have a sliver of hope, something new takes it away.

The fandom doesn't know who I am, so I'm comfortable saying this, but I can't say this to the people of my life. My life has been a mess since December last year, but being here on Tumblr used to make me feel happy and safe, nobody knew me here, nobody I know is here. Since January, I was forced to distance myself from this last safe place that I had. But by March, I decided to follow this till the end. It may sound silly, but mostly because I thought maybe if I'm unable to control the things in my life, maybe focussing on something that I have no access to (i.e. his life), might help me escape. Perhaps, there was another aspect to it. Maybe I thought it'll help me believe again that life is just and fair, I feel so naive now. It may sound like I've lost hope, but I haven't. Deep in my heart, I wish to see things clear for him, obviously for his sake and his kids' sake, but also for my own faith in the idea of EGBA. I feel I am projecting my own life and hopes onto this. It's funny because alot of the bigger messups that happened in my life, happened right around the same time in his. But today is a sad day, both for him and me.

That being said, I just want you guys to know that every morning when I wake up, and I open Tumblr, the gifs, jokes, pics and videos that you guys share give me some respite and help me smile. EVERY MORNING. So maybe some of you may be feeling lost/sad/angry, idk. But I want you all to know that little things that you guys do, as simple as making a cute edit, is helping someone far far from where you all are, and this is my way of showing gratitude. I wish I could do it without being an anon, but I'm not ready for it rn. Maybe one day I'd openly start to talk to you people without hiding behind this anon button. I really can't stand the rep of our fandom when it comes to the people Harry publicly dates, pr or not. The fans put Taylor on blast for literally existing and living her life back in 2012, and then even though I'm personally not fond of Kendall as a person, I definitely don't think she deserved the way directioners treated her and called her an attention seeker just for being seen with H, and then at last they searched the ends of the earth for evidence to make Camille seem problematic and when they couldn't find anything, they edited a bunch of stuff as an excuse to spam vile comments on her social media accounts. Now none of these people were perfect human beings and some were actually worse than others but in no way was it okay for the internet to treat them the way they did just for the sake of their conspiracy theories and personal feelings about these women.

Now when it comes to miss Oily forehead, it's a completely different story. She deserves the criticism, the calling out, all the backlash for her irresponsible and ignorant tendencies and her disgusting actions in the past when she was a grown ass woman. But this is like the boy who cried wolf, nobody believes us now that we claim that we actually have a reason for disliking her.

Everyone assumes that we're just being the crazy fanbase that we are, generalising all of us as immature 14 year old Larry shippers or jealous fangirls without a life, and they refuse to look beneath the surface or even hear us out.

We've exhausted our chances, actually our predecessors, the wild bunch of directioners(not all of them obv, but the ones who were disrespectful) and the deranged Harries have made sure that the gp never takes us seriously and views Omicron as a "poor victim of cruel fans aww, c'mere gurlboss lemme give you a hug and a quirky tshirt (atleast she could finally stop stealing Harry's clothes then) and we're fellow feminists now" and moves on.

The ones who claim to be proud HO shippers/believers are either blind people, or being held hostage or paid by Oatmeal to pretend to like/support her, or they're just feeling guilty for the years of unreasonable hate that Harry's partners, both rumoured and confirmed had recieved and now trying to redeem themselves by going ride or die for Omnipotence and being the "nice, respectful fans" as if Harry would give them a cookie for it or something (even if he did, that cookie would have a shipping charge so idk what delusional utopia these people are living in...oh right, that utopia is just the USA, sorry for being shady uhh anywaysss)

Lost is a show I've seen 3 times and I love it even more each time. One of my all time favorite shows because it just nails what really matters in a show to me. I've realized that good characters and impactful emotional moments overpower tightly written worldbuilding or lore to me. Sure could it be better if all the mysteries were neatly explained and planned from the start? Maybe but thats not how most stories are made anyways. they evolve as they are made, especially TV shows.

Though I personally prefer more planning in stories that complex (The Good Place remains my current, go-to example for how to balance planned and organic writing), Lost will always have my respect not just for its amazing cast, but simply because of how dramatically it changed the landscape of television and fandom. Anyone getting into the series in 2021 won't know how unique it was at the time. No one had seen anything like it, the diverse cast helped draw a global audience, the constantly evolving mysteries begged for fandom engagement, and all of this was paired with social media just coming into its own. To put things into perspective, Lost began airing in 2004. Facebook was founded the same year and Twitter wouldn't arrive until two years later; Tumblr three. Lost aired right when people were finding new ways to communicate online, so to be given a story that rich and deep, filled with things to uncover and theorize about, this insanely complex mythology to catalogue and share right then... it really was a perfect storm. Spoiler culture was taking root. A message board sponsored by Abrams himself predated tweeting @ celebrities. Podcasts popped up devoted to analyzing every second of the show. The intensity of the writers' strike sparked endless debates and the utter explosion when many fans were disappointed with the ending could put a lot of modern fandom drama to shame. Obviously, Lost didn't invent people discussing television shows online, but it kind of refined how we went about it.

Though I'd never actually want to lose the joys of streaming, a part of me really misses the days when television felt more like a communal activity. Lost was this amazing, cultural event because you had everyone waiting on the edge of their seat for the next episode, same date and time, coming together afterwards to unpack it all over the course of a week. Obviously we still get that with many shows, but as releasing entire seasons at once grows more common, fans are forced to binge it all immediately (lest everything be spoiled) and the fervor for the show usually dies as quickly as it arrived. As streaming continues to splinter onto a hundred different platforms (RIP) people are giving up on shows halfway through because, well, it moved to such-and-such and I'm not paying another $25 fee. As we move to shorter seasons/miniseries, we're losing the ability to get the crazy, sprawling plots that Lost had 20+ episodes for. It's unlikely that Lost could exist as it does if it had been created for today's TV landscape. And the Internet is just bigger now. Our options for what to watch have increased exponentially (seriously, I just went through a 225 slide of what's been renewed or canceled and istg, I didn't know half those shows existed) and while that's absolutely amazing, it also feels like we've lost that sense of everyone talking about that one show. You know the one. The global darling that everyone from the die-hard fan to your average soccer mom is tuning in for. The last time I got that sense was with GoT.

There's just so much to say about Lost. Not just as a story, but as a phenomenon too. For me, especially given its fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants approach to storytelling, enjoying Lost had as much to do with how I consumed it as the actual plots, themes, and characters we got.

SORRY about this but.. I would just like to put forward the idea that Diaspro could've been such a good villain had they actually let her be a proper villain...

The idea of her family blaming her for him being such an ass and seeing Bloom accept him back and their relationship going smoothly from there just causes her to snap. and she allies with Valtor.

And even if she HAD still been obsessing over Sky. It could've become more and more obvious that she no longer sees him as a person she used to care about. Sky is a prize. and Sky belongs to her.

Like. they could've had Villain Diaspro's theme song be "You are my Sunshine" by the Phantoms-

I fully agree. Like I understand why the idea of redemption for Diaspro is so popular within the fandom. I do. She's very entertaining and when a female character is villified using such misogynistic tropes, you're gonna stan her out of spite. Plus I vaguely recall reading a comic where she does get redeemed which clearly didn't carry over into the show lmao. I would absolutely be down with any reboot that chooses to go that path with her

But holy shit, she could have been THE BEST villain! I'm a bit biased because the main thing I really wanted to see explored more in Winx is the different social statuses between the characters(Sky badly needed an arc with that you can't change my mind), and Diaspro could have fit perfectly within that theme("I'm not afraid of your justice. I'm rich")

We're not given a lot of canon traits for Diaspro unfortunately, as she exists mainly to be a plot device to create drama between Bloom and Sky. But one thing that is shown about her is that she's spoiled and entitled. She's been raised her entire life to believe that she would one day marry a prince, and become queen. She sees common people as less than her, which seems very much like a reflection of Eraklyon's values if Sky's parents are anything to go by

It sets her up as a very interesting foil to Bloom, who aside from just coming from a much more humble background, constantly struggles with not believing herself to be good enough. Even if you see Diaspro as being genuinly into sky, it still ends up feeling more like a pride thing than anything else

It drives her crazy that this insignificant common girl can come along out of nowhere, attack Diaspro, and "steal" what's hers, without really facing any consequences for it. In her mind Bloom is a nobody and she doesn't understand why Sky would want someone like that over her

If you frame Diaspro's mindset more as her simply wanting to take back what is rightfully hers, that actually lines up really well with Valtor's own motivations as well. There's a lot there that could be used to explore this feeling entitlement and superiority on the side of the villains

Hickey/Crozier: My first impulse is "handies and blowies" but really I think Hickey's imagination of how their relationship is going to go before it really goes off the rails is all about building an advantageous rapport with Crozier. I feel like Hickey is incredible at cards but there's probably a bit of a gap between what he's playing for fun/to fleece his friends and what Crozier plays for fun... though given Crozier's a career Navy dude, maybe not? If they had to overwinter together alone in some kind of last-two-survivors/separated-from-the-crew situation I feel like Hickey would be really pretty engaged with Crozier's own life story as Francis himself narrates it, even if he's interpreting it through his own "wow, we're totally soulmates" lens. Also telling Crozier all about his favorite cold-weather city foods like pea soup and eels while Crozier grudgingly tries to catch a seal for dinner.

Richard II/Anne of Bohemia: These two definitely have the most robust winter blahs programming and I think some of it is how spread out the medieval European Christmas season could get -- especially Epiphany, since that's also Richard's birthday. It's still a cold, bleak time of year in this hemisphere though, especially with stone floors, so I feel like they get through it via communal storytelling, fur-lined everything, and co-sleeping. The traditional labors of the months have January marked out for feasting (for rich people at least) and chopping wood/spinning wool/desperately trying to avoid going outside to pee (for normal people -- no kidding about that last one, the Hennessey Hours have some great sneaky peeing) but I feel like there's only so much feasting and socialization you can do especially as a courtly couple, so I picture some judicious retreating together and being as antisocial as possible in their position.

Phil Burbank/Peter Gordon: Figuring out what they'd do on the ranch during the winter season is my obsession. There's a really wonderful fic (tentaclemonster's "sole focus") where Peter contrives for him and Phil to spend the Christmas holiday together alone, and it's got me really thinking about what Phil does all winter when he's out there just like, not bathing and everything. (It sounds like winter in cattle ranching is a big season for the kind of repairs and preparatory work there's not time for otherwise, but you're also keeping everything fed and apparently cattle are fucking??? And some places have winter calves???? Listen, I don't know the first thing about cattle, but I fucking love the idea of surprise calves.) So if they both survive til then and Peter's back from college it's a very different daily rhythym -- Phil's pissy and stir-crazy, while I do think Peter would be perfectly happy to just lock himself up with his books until it's time to head back to school, and that makes for a perfect time to either genuinely bond over a shared activity Peter can find proficiency in or get locked in an absolutely insane battle of wills while everyone else in the household is desperately just trying to have a nice Christmas. Both of which are just perfect for me.
