The start of Western Illinois’ NCAA tournament run in Year 24, continued
Tumblr media
The Leathernecks start their run in the NCAA tournament looking for back-to-back national titles.
Welcome back to our simulated dynasty with the Western Illinois Leathernecks in College Hoops 2K8. You can find a full explanation of this project + spoiler-free links to previous seasons here. Check out the introduction to this series from early April for full context. As a reminder, we simulate every game in this series and only control the recruiting and coaching strategies.
Before we pick up with the Leathernecks in the first round of the NCAA tournament, here’s a recap of everything that has happened so far this season:
Western Illinois went on a Cinderella run to win the national championship as a No. 13 seed last season, our fourth title since I took over the program. Watch our “One Shining Moment” video here. We lost two starters from that team to the NBA, but enter the new year with the rest of the rotation still intact. Somehow, we were unranked in the preseason polls.
We went 5-5 in the non-conference schedule, before again sweeping the Summit League and winning the Summit League tournament. We were given a No. 10 seed in the big dance.
We recruited for five scholarships, landing four-star shooting guard Neil Modrovich out of Cleveland at the end of the early signing period.
Read: Western Illinois, Year 24, 2030-2031
Here’s a look at our roster entering the NCAA tournament:
Tumblr media
Championship-or-bust. That’s the goal as we prepare for the 2031 NCAA tournament.
Our Leathernecks have four national championships since I arrived in Macomb ahead of the 2007-08 season, but we’ve never won in back-to-back years. This team is good enough to do it. We returned three starters, all on the perimeter, all now seniors.
Point guard Koko Reeves is the smallest player in program history at 6-foot, but he silenced his doubters by providing knockdown shooting during our tournament run last season. Edwin Wolfe, a former five-star JUCO recruit, started the game 7-for-7 from three-point range against UNLV in the Final Four last season. Wolfe also has a 95-rating in steals, which is the highest on the team. Then there’s Jitim Dupree, the 6’10, 242-pound small forward who went off for 30 points or more three times during our run through the bracket. Dupree was named Final Four MOP for his performance, and could go down as perhaps the greatest player in school history if he powers us to another title.
The questions come in the front court. J.J. Bracy and Dick Copeland have plenty of pedigree — Bracy is the second-highest rated recruit in program history (No. 24 overall), and Copeland’s A rating in potential is our highest ever — but they still have to prove they can carry us on the biggest stages. Both players are only 6’8, so we aren’t as big as we have been the last few years when we’ve had 7-foot-plus centers. How we handle our lack of size inside will be one of the biggest storylines entering the tournament.
I can’t wait to see what we get from our young bench. 6’5 point guard Alexis Willingham and 6’8 wing Skip Clemmons both proved themselves as dependable players during our run through March last season, and should be even better as sophomores. There’s also two exciting freshmen who will be making their NCAA tournament debuts: 6’3 shooting guard Albert Jagla (the highest rated recruit in program history at No. 17 overall), and 6’11 center Cecil Sinville (our first-ever No. 1 ranked center prospect). We’ll need all nine guys to accomplish our goal and win the title.
Our opponent in the first round of the NCAA tournament is No. 7 seed Pitt. We enter the game as a 99 overall, while Pitt is rated as a 91. Here’s how the two teams matchup:
Tumblr media
If we can win in the first round, we’ll likely face No. 2 seed South Florida in the round of 32. We blew out the Bulls during the regular season, but they’re a talented team who could certainly give us trouble in a potential rematch.
We streamed the game against Pitt on Twitch on Monday night. As always, I am not controlling Western Illinois — we’re watching a simulated game.
We want back-to-back titles. The journey starts here in the round of 64 against the Panthers. Let’s go!

Win, 100-93! Wow, I never expected we’d need a huge second half rally just to survive the opening round, but that’s exactly what happened. That game was stressful.
We were down 75-65 with under seven minutes left when I took a timeout. We decided to close with the true freshman Sinville at center, with Dupree sliding up to the four, and Clemmons in at the three with our starting guards. We needed to an offensive surge, and it was our defense that provided it.
twitch_clip
After Edwin Wolfe hit a three out of the timeout, we forced a steal on the other end that led to a Koko Reeves layup. We went into our full court trapping defense, and got another steal that led to a Koko three. We forced a steal again off the ensuring inbounds pass that led to a layup for Jitim Dupree. Then it was Skip Clemmons time.
The 6’8, 240+ pound sophomore wing went off in the closing stretch, hitting three straight three-pointers to give us the lead for good. Clemmons finished with 21 points, with almost all of them coming in the second half. It is so nice to have another big wing who can hit shots coming off the bench. This team might not have a ton of size inside, but it does have so much lineup versatility.
The end result was a 22-2 run that transformed the game and gave us the win.
twitch_clip
We won this game because we caught fire from three and were able to force a bunch of turnovers on defense. The win did mask some real issues for us, though, most notably in the front court.
We’re just not as stout in the middle at either end as we have been in the past. Copeland’s lack of size at 6’8 really hurts him. He finished with only four points and six rebounds, and didn’t have much a rim protection presence. Our power forward J.J. Bracy was solid, but he’s not big or dynamic enough to cover up any shortcomings at center the way Allen Cunningham once was. I thought Sinville gave us some decent minutes off the bench — he’s our biggest player at 6’11 — but he’s still a true freshman.
Here are the team stats from reader Tom:
'Necks hit 18 threes (!) and had 14 steals (!). @SBN_Ricky pic.twitter.com/yKwDSuqsY4
— Thomas SkullFarmer (@TomJerkface) October 13, 2020
I feel more relieved than encouraged after that one. At least maybe we found the right closing lineup? One thing is for sure: we’re definitely going to need to straighten out our defense.
Next up, we face No. 2 seed South Florida in the round of 32.
No. 10 seed Western Illinois vs. No. 2 seed South Florida, round of 32, 2031 NCAA tournament
We actually faced South Florida during the regular season in a game we streamed on Twitch. We won that game easily, but USF’s overall talent level was impressive. I’m not surprised they ended up with a No. 2 seed.
You may recall that USF is led by a created character from the winner of one of our bracket contests. Rudolpho Butt Jr. — an ode to a former assistant coaching target we had years back — is now a 7-foot junior power forward who is projected as a lottery pick in the NBA draft. He’s a three-level scoring threat who also provides rim protection at the other end. It’s going to be a tough matchup for our boy J.J. Bracy.
Here’s a look at USF’s roster:
Tumblr media
The Bulls enter the game rated as a 97 overall.
We streamed this game on Twitch. We’ve actually never made it past the round of 32 in years when we’ve been defending a national championship. It’s time to change that now. Let’s go!

Loss, 80-72. Our dream of repeating as national champions dies again in the round of 32. This is such a painful way to head into our offseason.
We just couldn’t hit a shot in the second half. Sometimes, that’s all it comes down to. Dupree — who was so brilliant during last year’s tournament run on his way to winning Final Four MOP — was gunning until the end, but just couldn’t catch a rhythm. He ended the night 5-of-19 from the field, and 4-of-13 from three. With our best player struggling, we needed someone else to emerge as the star of the night, and it just didn’t happen.
Bracy was particularly dreadful going against RBJ for most of the night, finishing 0-of-6 from the field. Copeland and Willingham were great in the first half, combining to score 20 points. They were both pretty much invisible in the second half, combining to score only six points out of halftime.
We tried messing with the lineups, and we experimented with different versions of our full court press, but we just couldn’t make enough plays to win the game. Full credit to South Florida. They had a lot of ballers on that team.
I guess we can’t make a deep run every year. It just hurts because this was the last game for Koko Reeves, Edwin Wolfe, and Jitim Dupree, all of whom were so instrumental in our national championship last year. Tough way to go out, but I’m still excited for the future of the program. This is going to be a big offseason for recruiting. Let’s get into it.
Offseason
We have co-winners of the bracket contest: Aaron Downs and Eric Judd. They gave me some fun characters to create, which we’ll do at the start of the Year 25 stream.
South Florida makes it all the way to the national title game, where they lose to .... Maryland. That is the Terps’ third national title in this simulation, which is the most of any team that is not Western Illinois. We’re stuck on four titles for another year.
Dupree gets drafted, Reeves and Wolfe do not. I really think Jitim is one of our greatest players ever.
Kansas, North Carolina, and UCLA are among the schools who offer me their head coaching job .... no thanks. We’re staying in Macomb.
We lost an assistant coach and replaced him with a guy who has B- grades in offense and defense, a B+ grade in teaching, and A- discipline.
Recruiting
On the first day of the spring signing period, we land a big man: 6’9 center C.J. Cesar out of Cincinnati is a Leatherneck.
Tumblr media
Cesar is the No. 9 center, and is rated as the No. 210 player in the class. He’s the second player we’ve landed in this class, after getting a commitment four-star shooting guard Neil Modrovich during the season. He gives us some badly needed front court depth. We’re also chasing 7’2 center Daron Coulter, so it’s possible Cesar ends up at power forward for us long-term. Either way, we’re excited to land him, and still have three other scholarships to fill.
In addition to Coulter, we also have offers out to top-100 point guard Drake Amous and four-star shooting guard Theo Cowans. It isn’t going so well: Amous commits to BYU, and Cowans commits to Texas Tech. As we search for backup plans, we get some good news: Daron Coulter becomes our third commitment of this recruiting class.
Coulter is the No. 7 overall center, and is rated No. 196 overall in this class.
Tumblr media
We’re thrilled to have a center with elite size for the future, especially since that was a weakness of ours this past season. I’m feeling really good about the three plays we have locked down so far, but we still have two scholarships left.
With only two weeks left in the recruiting period, we have to work fast. I decide to offer four-star shooting guard Alfred Soto, and three-star power forward Spanky Falls. Both choose other programs during the final day of the signing period. That means we’re rolling over two scholarships to next year, which isn’t the worst case scenario. We were originally slotted to have zero available scholarships next season, because we won’t have any seniors. Now there’s a pair of offers at our disposal if we find some truly special talent.
As for our created players, Abby commits to Villanova, and Justin Kossak commits to NC State. We’ll follow their careers throughout our simulation.
It’s time to set the schedule for next year. This is what we decide to go with:
@ Illinois, @ Loyola (IL), @ Tennessee, @ SMU, @ Kansas State, @ South Florida, @ Boston College, @ Virginia Tech
Year 25
Here’s a look at our roster for Year 25.
Tumblr media
Our reserves from the last couple years are now fully entrenched in the starting lineup. I can’t wait to see what Willingham, Clemmons, and Jagla can do as our starters on the perimeter. I always loved this junior class, and this will be their last season full together: Copeland is already projected as a top pick in the NBA, which means he’s as good as gone after this year. Willingham and Bracy are also projected first rounders. We’ll see what happens there.
One thing we are lacking for the upcoming year: depth. I believe we’re only going to have an eight-man rotation. We’ll have one big (Cecil Sinville), one wing (Nic Cummings), and one guard (Goran Kent) off the bench.
We’re going to redshirt all three members of our incoming recruiting class. Here’s how they graded out:
SG Neil Modrovich: 74 overall, A- potential. We’re thrilled to see Modrovich looks like he’s going to be awesome. I believe it’s the first time in program history we’ve had a guard with a potential rating this high. Former No. 62 overall recruit.
C Daron Coulter: 75 overall, C potential. Coulter has already grown an inch to 7’3, which means he’s the tallest player in program history before he’s ever played a game. He should be an excellent five-year big man for us. Landing him was a major addition for our future. Former No. 196 overall recruit.
C C.J. Cesar: 74 overall, B- potential. Cesar is moving to power forward, where he maintains as a 74 overall. He’s limited as an outside shooter (50 three-point rating), but he’s already an A- in strength, and looks like he’ll be a great offensive rebounder. Former No. 210 overall recruit.
We’re going to stream the regular season in Year 25 on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 8:30 p.m. ET on Twitch. Here’s how you can watch it.
How to watch Western Illinois’ Year 25 stream
What we’re watching: Western Illinois Year 25 regular season stream. We’ll watch one regular season game, recruit for two scholarships, and sim to the NCAA tournament.

Manchester gutter punks, The Battery Farm, talk to us about horrific crime inspiring a song and how they just had to form this band...
Tumblr media
We’ve got frontman/guitarist Ben from the band.
Alright Ben, can you tell us about the band. Who plays what and how the band got together?
Hallo! We are The Battery Farm, four gutter bastards from Manchester playing gnarly, seething punk rock music.
Ben Corry on Vocals and Guitar, Dominic Corry on Guitar, Paul Worrall on Bass, Sam Parkinson on Drums. Me and Dom formed this band from the ashes of a band we'd previously been in together for 8 years. At the point we formed The Battery Farm we were in a low place, feeling like failures, feeling defeated by this thing that we'd built for years just imploding, feeling angry and scared and hopeless at the utter state of the world. We basically decided to do this in the pub one night when we felt like we had absolutely nothing to lose. It was formed as a desperate reaction to two lives and minds spiralling out of control in a hostile, hateful world.
That must have been tough but, seems like it’s worked out well and the band from what I can tell is going from strength to strength. How soon did you find the remaining members, Paul and Sam? What have they brought to the band?
It has actually. Helpfully, it was a fertile environment from which to create. The first wave of songs - stuff like I Am a Man - are the purest distillation of that sense of lashing out, that sense of desperation we were feeling at the time.
We found Paul pretty much straight away. I'd known him for years through Manchester's Fringe theatre scene, having been in a couple of plays with him. He'd come to see me in a play, I knew he was a musician as well as an actor (although I don't think I'd grasped just how good he is), so I asked if he fancied playing bass for our new band. Sam we actually didn't know before the band, and it took a little longer to get him in. He works for the same company i do and I'd heard he was a drummer, so I got his contact details, asked him if he fancied coming for a rehearsal with us. It all clicked, and the rest is history.
Paul and Sam bring a massive amount to the band. They lift the songs me and Dom write and add a very particular combination of power and melody which you'll be hard pressed to come by very often. They're fucking ace and they know what is good for the song. No ego, no fucking about. They know what's important.
Sounds like you needed that new band to form quickly and to find drummer and bassist when you did you was very fortunate. I watched an interview of you and Dom recently and you talked about inspiration for songwriting and I was interested in where 97/91 came from. When it comes to writing where do you first look to for ideas?
Yeah we did, finding a drummer was comparitively difficult and I think if we'd have really struggled then we honestly would have just given up on it. 97/91 came about after I read an article about the murder of Suzanne Capper in Moston, north Manchester, which is where me and Dom grew up. I'm not going to go into details but if you look it up you'll see that it's the most horrific thing you've ever read. It stuck with me for weeks afterwards, and part of that was because I knew the streets where it had taken place and the community in which it had taken place. The houses it happened in - numbers 97 and 91 - are still there to this day. I got to thinking about why I reacted so viscerally to that story in particular; atrocities happen every day and we don't bat an eyelid, not really. It had such an impact because I was so familiar with the setting, so familiar with the type of person involved. It was too real. 97/91 explores the idea that we make a trade-off in our lives, one which enables cognitive dissonance that shields us from the impact the mass, relentless violence of the world. It also means that when something evil happens in a familiar setting the impact is much greater.
Tumblr media
How can it only be real when you can see it? 97/91 isn't necessarily about the Capper murder itself, but the murder is a jumping off point to explore the faustian pact at the heart of the human condition, the one that keeps us sane but also ebbs away at our souls.
Our ideas just literally come from trying to explain our perspective on the world, we don't necessarily make a conscious effort to look in one place for ideas. We just write about whatever moves us. That can be mental illness, corrupt political systems, or the fact that I've never been to Gorton, which is literally the title of one of our new songs.
I find reading about crime stories really interesting, it’s madness what goes on in this world! This is one I’m not aware of but this must have been difficult to write about with it being so close to home? I love the anger and aggression in your music and lyrics.
You mentioned being an actor earlier, do you think this has an influence on your performance as a front man?
Yeah I went through a short phase of listening to true crime podcasts earlier this year but i had to stop bec it was all too grim. It was difficult to explore the ideas that particular incident led me onto but the endgame wasn't to just write about the murder itself, so I suppose keeping that in mind kept my head clear and made things easier.
Honestly, i try to keep any ideas of acting and theatre separate from the band. The actor thing can be frustrating at times because people conflate that with what I do in the band and think that everything must be a performance of some kind, which it isn't. The whole idea of putting The Battery Farm together was that it could give us an outlet to express ourselves honestly, and to me the stuff I do as a frontman is just an honest reaction to what I'm singing and what it makes me feel. I try not to overthink that aspect of it because I feel like to do so would water it down. It needs to be raw, it needs to be stark, it needs to be reality. If it's an actor's performance I'm not really getting anything out of it.
It’s amazing how reading/listening to one can lead on to another one. But yeah hard to shake off once you’ve learned about them.
You’re performance on stage seems very honest and I love to see in a frontman.
Moving on to the music scene...Manchester in particular is buzzing at the minute. Did the band find it easy to slot in? What’s been your favourite gig up to now?
We did actually. We knew a couple of people anyway from being in previous bands but until now I'd always found the Manchester scene a little unfriendly. It's totally different now. Not only is it overflowing with incredible, original, exciting new bands but it's also full of amazing people, and in the year we've been gigging we've made some wonderful friends. There's a proper sense of inclusivity and community, a lack of ego and aloofness that wasn't there before.
My favourite, and I think the others would agree with me, is our first headline set which was at The Peer Hat last November. It was an Abattoir Blues night and they're always amazing. The venue was packed to capacity and the atmosphere was electric. It was the kind of big, simmering sweatbox that seems impossible to imagine in the current climate. I want every gig we play to be like that one.
Tumblr media
Yeah it’s great to see bands appreciating each other’s music and plugging their stuff on social media etc. I love going to Manchester for a gig. It’s a great time for guitar music in the UK at the minute with bands like Idles, Fontaines DC and Sports Team doing really well. And also The Blinders bringing album 2 out very soon!
That gig sounds like a great night!
When all this is over and we get some normality back...what are the bands plans?
Well, we're heading into the studio later this summer to begin work on... something. Beyond that it's hard to say because like everyone else we can't really make plans at the moment. Like everyone else we're pretty much having to make it up as we go along. We do have gigs booked for November and December but whether they'll happen or not remains up to fate. Everything going to plan, we may be in for an exciting end to the year. Maybe.
Gonna be very exciting for all bands and music once gigs/recording etc can happen again isn’t it.
Got so many new bands I want to see. Have you discovered any new bands during lockdown? If not, what have you been listening to?
Lockdown's actually been really fruitful in terms of new bands releasing amazing stuff. I've been listening to a lot of Tinfoils recently, they're a delight! Also been loving new stuff from Cold Water Swimmers, The Red Stains, Richard Carlson Band, The Maitlands, loads of stuff. I've also recently discovered John Shuttleworth, a comedy singer from Sheffield who does weird Phoenix Club-type songs about stuff like margerine and vans. I love stuff like that, real end of the pier nonsense.
Tumblr media
I love Tinfoils and down to have them on here in Wigan but then lockdown came. The other bands I’m aware of too but not the solo artists you’ve mentioned.
Yeah Tinfoils are great. John Shuttleworth has been around for years i think. I can imagine he won't be to everyone's taste. Richard Carlson Band are actually named after the actor Richard Carlson, who was in The Creatire From the Black Lagoon. There is no Richard Carlson in that band! They're absolutely ace, they released their debut single a few weeks ago and I've had it on repeat.
I’ll be sure to listen to your recommendations, love finding new music to listen to.
We’re coming to the end of the interview now, I’ve just got a couple of questions. You’ll get two options, you pick one answer...
Winter or summer?
Sex Pistols or The Clash?
Roast dinner or Chinese?
Film or Book?
Winter
The Clash
Roast Dinner
Book
Thanks for having me! Hopefully see you soon
Thanks Ben for taking the time to chat to us. Hopefully we’ll cross paths at a gig soon.
If you want to listen to the band please go and follow them on social media and their music is on Spotify etc.

How To Win More Pitches: 3 Top Performing Approaches
As a small business owner and a consultant for the past 10 years, I live and die by my ability to pitch. Pitching is the fastest way to get business when you have nothing. There is also the very real possibility that competition for work is going to get a lot harder. With the millions of newly unemployed people.
Tips for Sales Pitching
Here are my secrets on how to win more pitches.
Get Permission to Pitch
It may seem counterintuitive but you don’t actually want to cold pitch people. Getting permission to pitch allows you to increase your conversion rates with your list. 99% of all cold pitches look something like this.
Hi Mr. Prospect.
My name is Austin Iuliano, I’m a social media consultant. I wanted to tell you about this great new offer I think you will love. Here is a big wall of text about me. But… let me list a series of bullet points so you actually kinda read these points.
It’s brand new and awesome (but only I think it’s awesome)
This pitch is completely stock and not personal but you should waste your time reading it anyway
I know that I need to send out 100+ pitches today so I feel good about myself.
Now that you read it all, let me put the onus on you to tell me when to get in touch.
-Austin Iuliano
I’m sure you have seen this type of pitch before. Aren’t these pitches annoying when they hit your inbox?  Come on people let’s do better! Instead of doing a straight cold pitch, try a permission-based lead in pitch.
Here is a real example of a permission-based pitch:
Hey (name)
My name is Austin Iuliano, I’m reaching out on behalf of Josh Marsden of CVO accelerator. You were a speaker for a virtual summit with Josh in 2017. I’m wondering if you would be open to helping Josh promote a new one. The focus of this event is on E-Commerce and we would be happy to set you up as an affiliate to compensate you.
May I send you over more info?
-Austin Iuliano https://ift.tt/2bIDdXf As seen on Forbes, Business Insider, CMO Summit
Let’s break this pitch down to the key components.
Who I am and how I know this person (through a mutual contact)
Why I’m reaching out in a single sentence
What’s in it for them
A simple request with an easy “Yes”
Information about me (the stranger) so they can do their own research and learn about me.
This pitch is short and can be read in under 60 seconds like an elevator pitch. It touches on the 5 main components to a good pitch. Ending this pitch with a simple yes, no question to send over more information. Steal this template and start gaining permission to send more information.
Out of 100 pitches I sent to the past speakers at this event, I got a response rate of over 22%. That isn’t to say 22 people said yes. A no is as important as yes, as it crosses off one more person to follow up with.
Focus Pitches On What’s In It For Them
My focus was on signing affiliates and micro-influencers to help promote the event. I was also given free rein to try and snag big influencers with lots of reach. I knew these “whales” aren’t going to sign up and promote someone else’s event without more incentive. That is why I focused my pitches on what’s in it for them.
Here is the exact pitch I used:
Headline: 10,000+ New Email Subscribers For Virtual Speaking Engagement
Hi (Name)
Could you please have someone on your team give me a call about getting you in front of 10,000+ customers for a virtual speaking engagement?
My number is 555-555-5555
-Austin Iuliano https://ift.tt/2bIDdXf As seen on Forbes, Business Insider, CMO Summit
This pitch is also a very simple yet effective pitch:
A headline that grabs attention
A simple request that their team contact me about this deal
My cell number
A signature that lets them discover who I am
I didn’t know these massive influencers and had to cold pitch them. I sent these pitches through their website contact forms instead of hunting down their personal email addresses. Website contact forms are lead generation tools and my offer is a speaking lead. I also made it very easy for their team to get ahold of me.
Focusing my pitch on giving the speakers new email subscribers worked. New email subscribers are new potential customers.
Win Pitches In The Follow Up
Using my advice by starting conversations asking for permission, you will have a lot of interested parties. To close the deals and win the pitch, you have to be great in your follow up. Once they ask you to send more information, follow this format with your pitch.
Hi Name + Personalization
An attention-grabbing paragraph that showcases the value
Sell the idea
Sell the benefits
Get more info to make a decision
A simple yes/no request
Signature with more info about you
Here is an example to show you what I mean:
Hey (name),
The summit is E-Commerce Unmasked – How to Start, Grow, and Scale an E-commerce Business. So far we have some amazing big-name speakers lined up such as Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income.
Our goal in creating this event is to help those struggling with COVID-19 to create successful and profitable eCommerce businesses. There are many businesses that are struggling as they don’t have the tools and resources we do. Therefore we wanted to create something to help solve their needs, deliver a ton of value while also creating profit for everyone involved.
As you have been a past speaker with Josh during his last virtual summit in 2017, we would love to offer you an opportunity to be an affiliate for this upcoming event.
The affiliate highlights you will want to know:
Affiliates are being offered a 50% commission on the front end ($47-$97 tickets) and a 5% commission on the backend ($997-$1197).
The previous event we converted all traffic at 7% on the front end.
We have speakers lined up such as Pat Flynn, John Mallott, Greg S Reid, and Roland Frasier.
We are projecting 10,000+ sign-ups to this event.
The event registration is coming up quickly April 20th-May 3rd.
We will provide step-and-repeat email campaigns, text message campaigns, and social media posts that you can customize.
I’ve taken the liberty of attaching the complete breakdown of this event including full list of speakers, compensation breakdown, relevant dates, etc. If this sounds like something your audience would find valuable I’d love to get you set up as an affiliate.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
-Austin Iuliano https://ift.tt/2bIDdXf As seen on Forbes, Business Insider, CMO Summit
Look at the structure I put forth you can see that I have an attention-grabbing paragraph. I grab attention with a big name drop (Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income.)
From there I sell the idea of this event and why we putting it together. You have to sell the idea before anything else, otherwise, this event is like every other event out there. From there I can go into the bullet points and sell the benefits to the affiliate.
I attached a beautifully designed one-sheet that I got from templatemonkey.co.  I customized for each person I was pitching. Swapping out their image that I pulled from social media or their website.
Ending with asking them to say yes to being an affiliate. I want them to express interest instead of sending the sign-up link. This way I get permission again before I go for the sale.
Finally, the email signature. Email communication can be days apart and they may have forgotten who I was. This simple formula works incredibly well, use this template and go win more pitches! I landed 2 whales in just under a week.
Stay Organized!
Organization is a major key to winning pitches. When you are pitching for new business there is a ton to keep track of. For example:
You need to know who you are pitching
When to follow up
What personalized touchpoints you can add
What stage they are on
There are many tools to use to help you stay organized but I use Hubspot’s CRM.
Additionally, I use an analog system to double-check my work. Writing names down on sticky notes on a whiteboard. Having a redundant system helps you double-check your progress.
This system also helps me visualize my workload without booting up my laptop. As I sip my morning coffee I can look over and see who I need to follow up with, and get in contact with again.
Let me know, what is your secret to winning more pitches? Let me know in the comments section.

-Austin Iuliano http://austiniuliano.com As seen on Forbes, Business Insider, CMO Summit
My number is 555-555-5555
-Austin Iuliano http://austiniuliano.com As seen on Forbes, Business Insider, CMO Summit
-Austin Iuliano http://austiniuliano.com As seen on Forbes, Business Insider, CMO Summit

The autoimmune disorder lupus impacts roughly half a billion people worldwide, and yet while the name rings familiar, few among us know much about it. Now, we might be closer than ever to determining the real cause of this disease.
With no known cause or cure, lupus can flare up out of nowhere with a host of symptoms caused by widespread inflammation and tissue damage to skin, organs and blood vessels, sometimes fatally so.
Despite the disease's long and rich history, researchers did not even know it was partially genetic until the 1950s. Unable to explain lupus using simple Mendelian logic, it took us nearly seven more decades to find an actual culprit. Now, we have two.
After six years of research, immunologist Simon Jiang and his colleagues have at last found a major cause of lupus: a pair of rare genetic mutations. Previously ignored by researchers, these genetic abnormalities are found in most lupus patients and are the driver of the immune system's attack on the body's own tissues.
"We have shown for the first time how rare gene variants that occur in less than one per cent of the population cause lupus and how these variants drive the disease in the body," says Jiang, a researcher at the Australian National University.
"Until now, it was thought that these rare variants played a negligible role in human autoimmunity and related autoimmune diseases."
Instead, it seems they were both responsible for one of the most mysterious hallmarks of the disease. Recent studies show that in the vast majority of lupus patients, something unknown appears to be driving the excessive and spontaneous production of an immune molecule, even when no virus infection can be found.
These molecules are type 1 interferons (T1 IFN), and when these cytokines proliferate out of control, they can lead to profound changes in the development of the white blood cells (or B cells) that produce antibodies.
This, it turns out, is exactly what the two mutant genes, known as BLK and BANK1, are supposed to be reigning in. Comparing 69 lupus patients with 97 healthy elderly participants, the authors found that these rare genetic variants were far more common among the former group, even when the team repeated the study with 64 more lupus patients.
In mouse models, the variants were also found to increase the amount of malfunctioning B cells present.
"Significantly, we demonstrate that these rare variants exert measurable damaging effects on protein function, ultimately leading to a common endpoint of increased T1 IFN activity in human B cells," the authors write.
While it's true that lupus can also be triggered by hormonal and environmental factors - like sunlight - genetic factors remain one of the most powerful risks. In fact, the chances of an identical twin sharing the disease with their sibling is thought to be roughly 50 percent.
By pinpointing some of the genes responsible, the researchers have now made it that much easier to diagnose, and this is a particularly tricky stage given that lupus has a host of broad symptoms that mimic many other illnesses.
"It now will only take a few weeks to get a patient's genome sequence," says Jiang.
"We can look at how the immune system is behaving, take blood tests and with genome sequencing we can fit the pieces together and see if it is lupus."
Still, Jiang's research doesn't just have the potential to help physicians with diagnosis. Today, new treatments for lupus are limited and wide-acting with a whole bunch of downsides. In 2011, the FDA approved their first new drug for the disease in half a century.
With brand new targets to focus on, we may finally get some fresh contenders, ones that might even be personalised.
"I've already started treating people who have these rare gene mutations with targeted therapies instead of bombarding their immune system with non-specific treatments that have lots of side effects - which is the current mainstay of therapy," says Jiang.
"And because the genes we have worked on are linked to other autoimmune diseases, our discovery could also be applied to conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and type 1 diabetes."
This study has been published in Nature Communications.

Wild West Summer Series 2018: St. Louis
The summer season is quickly winding down. We have a few more teams to cover and I will make sure to squeeze them, hopefully as you are preparing for your drafts. As always make sure you buy the Dobber Guide and check out Cam’s, Eastern Edge Series.
The idea for these columns to compare end of 2017-18 Fantasy Hockey Geek rankings for individual players with an expected ranking based on their average draft positions from the start of the year. This process does not necessarily identify who was the most important player to each team but gives us not only an idea of who was a steal/bust on draft day, but where each player was valued going into this season. I will also be adding some thoughts on whether or not that is the new normal for the player in question and if we should be adjusting our draft positions. For a deeper dive on each team plus full projections make sure to get your copy of Dobber’s Fantasy Guide, out now!
And now for the technical details. We will be using the Fantasy Hockey Geek tool to get a ranking that combines all of a player’s stats for the searched categories. Like for the previous series, the ranks are based on a 12 team, head-to-head league, using the categories of goals, assists, power play points, shots, hits and blocks for forwards/defensemen and wins, saves, save percentage and goals against average for goalies. Player eligibility for this series is based on Yahoo, and draft ranks are based on average draft positions compiled from Yahoo, ESPN and CBS by FantasyPros.
  St. Louis
  Recap:
St. Louis started the 2017-18 season very strong sitting atop the NHL standings on December 11th. An injury to Jaden Schwartz and some inconsistent play from Jake Allen seemed to trigger the an implosion that lead to St. Louis dropping out of the playoffs by one point on the last day of the regular season.
  Undervalued:
  Brayden Schenn
The move to St. Louis clearly agreed with Brayden Schenn. The finished as the 57th most valuable player and the 11th most valuable center. To say that was an improvement on his previous season is an understatement. It was also a relatively significant improvement on his draft position.

In the summer of 2017 it seemed the general consensus that Schenn would likely improve on his 2016-17 numbers, but not many projected him to hit anywhere near 70 points (except Dobber so you had better go buy the guide).

2017-18 saw Schenn’s highest goal, assist, point per game, and shot numbers of his career. He is also incredibly valuable in this league set up as he adds a significant number of hits. His power play numbers, while all still excellent, were actually down slightly from his power play specialist role in Philadelphia. Clearly though, the addition of two minutes of ice time per game overall and playing with the likes of Vladimir Tarasenko will do wonders for your even strength production.
His shooting percentage was within the normal range, but a few of his other numbers are a touch high which could imply that 70 might be a bit of a ceiling for Schenn and he may settle in a few points below that. I should also note that Schenn, like the Blues on the whole, collapsed during the second half of the season. Over the first 44 games Schenn had 52 points (97 point pace), over the final 38 games Schenn managed 28 (60 point pace). Now certainly a 60 point pace can be valuable, and that pace is much more in line with his time in Philly than the first 44 games. The question for us then is how much stock do we put into the first 44 games. I come down on the side of the larger sample, and think we can hope for something close to the full season pace from 2017-18, but perhaps not a full repeat.
  Carter Hutton
Carter Hutton, Ben Bishop and Braden Holtby. I would never have placed those three in the same goalie tier for my 2017-18 draft. And yet, here we are, Hutton the most valuable of the three. Hutton was undrafted in essentially every league, while the goalies surrounding him had an average draft position of 67.

Now it is tempting to think that Hutton just needed the opportunity, and when it was finally given to him he tore it up. Unfortunately that isn’t entirely the case. Hutton is a 32 year old journeyman backup who has played for three different teams in the last five seasons (soon to be a fourth). The jump in 2017-18 wasn’t really about opportunity. In 2016-17 he actually a got a similar amount of games (while still on St. Louis) and clearly no one was rushing to grab him in 2017-18. Why? His numbers were decidedly worse.

2017-18 isn’t even the most he has played in a season. Back in 2013-14 he played 40 games and his numbers were even worse than in 2016-17.
Buffalo saw something that they liked in Hutton, and are seemingly hoping to pull an Antti Raanta and turn a backup into a solid number one. On the plus side he has a chance at some extended playing time in 2018-19, but on the down side Buffalo isn’t exactly known for their defense, and Hutton doesn’t really have a history of exceptional goaltending. Because of the change in team, Hutton certainly carries more value going into 2018-19, however expecting him to repeat 2017-18’s success is likely a mistake.
  Overvalued:
  Jaden Schwartz
Ok, I know, I have put injured players here for a couple of teams now. That is the obvious answer. Clearly an injured player is going to disappoint in a season long comparison. So yes, Jaden Schwartz was injured for a bit, only playing 62 games, but that is only part of the story.
Schwartz finished as the 251st most valuable player, and the 65th most valuable winger overall. He was drafted 112th on average, but those around him were drafted somewhere around 190th on average (still a disappointing return).

Schwartz had the highest point output and point per game pace of his career, and by a fair margin. He saw his highest power play time and total time on ice. He seemed to click well with Tarasenko and Schenn, so if only he had played a full season…
Unfortunately if you look at his value per game to account for those missed games it actually gets worse. Schwartz becomes the 83rd most valuable winger, and yes that is Cal Clutterbuck who provided more value than Jaden Schwartz. To be fair a very the average per game values at this level are all very close, and a small deviation in performance would could easily move him up to 75th overall, but the point remains.

The problem is, that while there are not a lot of wingers at his scoring pace or better (maybe 15), there are quite a few (about 60) who are shooting more than him, about 80 who hit more than him, and about 40 who block more, and another 40 that have a better power play point pace than Schwartz. That hurt a bit as those peripheral categories can weigh quite a bit in a composite score for a player.
Schwartz then is a bit of a conundrum. His scoring pace makes him a high draft target, but he doesn’t necessarily provide the value of some of the other wing options. In points only leagues he certainly provides a great per game value. In leagues that count a wider range of categories, he definitely starts to fall a bit. In the type of league described above, I am expecting the asking price to be more than the season value so I am unlikely to have the chance to draft Schwartz.
  Thanks for reading.
