Friends: Everyone needs them. That’s a key finding of a study of orphaned elephants in the wild. Young elephants who live among same-aged peers have lower stress levels than elephants who don’t, Natasha Daly reports. Photographer and Nat Geo Explorer Ami Vitale found these orphaned elephants (above) gathered at a watering hole at a sanctuary in northern Kenya.

Among African Elephants, same-sex activity – which often takes place at or in watering holes – may be preceded by a great deal of caressing and affectionate behaviors.

Natalie
I watched my
bated breath turn to mist
waiting outside of that bar
for you to come out. And when you did
I asked for your number. One smooth
rejection later, I’m still drunk on you like
the Angel’s Envy coursing through my veins.
To you I wasn’t country enough, didn’t know
enough of the tunes. Now here I am, with
that twang in my speakers in case I see
you again. Natalie, next we meet little missy,
and I take your hand in mine again to two-step,
perhaps these boots’ll be a little more scuffed,
and this heart a little more country.
