31 DOD: Day 12 - Nightwing comic artist:
pick one... ahahahaha...
It honestly depends on what I'm in the mood for, and I have different favorites for different things. By default, the answer is probably George Perez.
Tumblr media
But... then there's the... I don't even know what to call it, but the way Travis Moore draws faces and expressions and... oh man, yeah.
Tumblr media
Phil Jimenez has drawn some panels and sketches I've adored (and not just for Dick) and you don't know how upset I was that I couldn't get a spot on his commission list at FanExpo Dallas last year.
Tumblr media
And some more Moore and Jimenez 😁
Tumblr media
And then there are the other more recent artists who draw a gorgeous Dick. Bruno Redondo, Dan Mora, Jamal Campbell, Javier Fernandez, Marcus To, Marcio Takara, Jorge Jiménez...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Greg Land drew a very handsome Nightwing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jock draws such amazing poses that capture the character and the movement and... yeahhh. I think I've seen this one somewhere, before
Tumblr media
If you know me at all, you know my undying hatred and loathing for ASBAR... but the art... I can't say I don't like how Jim Lee draws Dick's hair. Especially in Hush,
Tumblr media
I won't lie, I appreciate the way Mikel Janín drew Dick when he was teaching gymnastics during the Grayson run. But what I really loved was Grayson 5, especially since it's a Robin Dies at Dawn reference
Tumblr media
And I love most of the artists who followed Scott McDaniel on the 1996 Nightwing run and just that era in general (okay, one of these is from Outsiders and one from New Titans) (Ric Leonardi, WIll Conrad, Patch Zircher, and Tom Grummett)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Can't forget Nicola Scott
Tumblr media
or Chris Samnee
Tumblr media
and I absolutely adore how Joelle Jones draws him
Tumblr media
Come to think of it, I love pretty much anyone I've gotten a commission from, even if they don't do what's traditionally considered the best loved art of him. (I've gotten commissions/convention sketches of Dick from George Perez, Steve Erwin, Todd Nauck, Ken Rocafort, Andrew Robinson, Joe Eisma, Scott Hanna, Brent Peeples, Rags Morales, and Yanick Paquette)
We've been ridiculously blessed with some great Dickpics :)

Wonder Woman 1987 runs ranked
Greg Rucka's Run (#195-226) - This is my absolute favorite run on WW1987. Rucka's got a good handle on Diana's character, and is very good at creating plots with lots of threads that are interesting to read. I think the way that Greek Gods are re-imagined (except for Hera and Zeus) reflects well in other DC-universe stuff at this time with regards to magic, which is the idea that old gods change with humanity to survive.
Eric Luke's (#139-159) - creator of devastation, my all time favorite wonder woman villain!!!!! So much good just for that! And we also have Artemis training cassie, what is not to love?
George Perez's run (#1-62) and Messner-Loeb's (#63-100) - these two both have bits I really like and bits I really don't. they're this high, because the fact that they each ran for so many issues means that the good parts outweigh the bad parts, and it's easier to forget about those. George Perez does very strong worldbuilding for the Amazon's and Diana's initial cast of supporting characters, Messner-Loebs introduces some very fun plots and characters (like Space Era Diana, Donna Milton, and Artemis).
Philip Jimenez's (#164-188) - Jimenez's run I feel bad putting down here, though I did like it. It started very strong, and I loved the way he retconned the worst bits of Messner-Loeb's Hippolyte. With Hippolyte's actions in the contest no longer being tied to Messner-Loebs trying to make her partially responsible for what Heracles did, and almost vicitm blaming her, it made it feel much less just 'pile on hippolyte' to see the next part of what he addressed, which is the way that the amazons of bana mighdall were treated as second class citizens. the de-establishing of the monarchy was great. in general, my only complaint about jimenez's run is i feel like a lot of the plotlines are rushed, and we don't really have a lot of time to see the cool worldbuilding stuff he was setting up. And Villainy Inc was boring and wasted time we otherwise could have spent on the interesting worldbuilding stuff.
John Bryne's (#101-136) - reading this run was like pulling teeth. It was so boring. the only positive part is that he created Cassie. For that he ges one (1) right.
I did genuinely enjoy all of these runs except for Bryne's, it's just a ranking of which one I remember enjoying more.

So what you’re telling me is that Wonder Woman is Diana who is named after Diana Trevor, Steve Trevor’s mother, and Steve Trevor is Etta Candy’s guy while Trevor Barnes is Diana’s guy. Then we’ve got Donna Troy who is Diana’s sister, not to be confused with Donna Milton, the name Circe used when disguised as a mortal and who has a daughter Lyta whose name sake is Hippolyta, Diana’s mother, who also has the mantle of Wonder Woman…

An interview from 2019; of interest are Jimenez’s comments regarding his run on Wonder Woman, reposted below:
Not long after that you took over Wonder Woman and you said that making Tempest, you were left alone to do your thing, and I feel like Wonder Woman was the opposite. Which may be unfair.
It is not unfair. From the very first issue, it was a fight. It was a fight with the same person who I was fighting with on Team Titans. [laughs] It reads that way in the pages, but looking back, there’s enough stuff in there that makes me go, that’s pretty good, but the struggle I was having with the company was clear from the first few pages.
In those couple years there’s a lot of crossovers and she’s neck deep in continuity and stories keep getting disrupted.
Part of that was that at the time, she was not considered an A-list character. She was more of a burden than anything else. Nobody could figure out how to get her sales up. When I came in, I pitched a 12 issue maxi-series. I didn’t want to be on the regular book. I’d had success with Tempest and I knew the story I wanted to tell and I wanted to be isolated a little bit, but then they put me on the regular book. On some level that’s why I got into comics – to write and draw Wonder Woman – so this was a dream come true. I’d just turned 30, I think. Of course it was a nightmare from page one. The funny thing is, I kept thinking, this is never going to happen again, so do what you can to make the best of it. There was an enormous amount of conflict and crossover and I had to truncate stories and elongate stories and kill off a supporting character and 9/11 happened. I look back on it and there was a lot of shell shock.
My original pitch would have been so simple. Twelve issues and four stories and each one did a different thing. I’m always amazed at how difficult we make it on ourselves – partly me, partly the publisher – because again, we’re a reactive industry. You hired me so let’s do this. I’m not here to sabotage your company. I will give you something that is good. But again – and I’ve told this story so many times – I had to kill off her mother and her mother was a major part of my 12 issues so I had to truncate all these stories because I was losing a character halfway in. Then they weren’t going to let me kill her off. She was going to die in a Superman event and it would happen in Superman. What was amazing was that all of the Superman creators were fighting for me saying, shouldn’t her only supporting character die in her own book? The Editor in Chief finally conceded, not happy about it at all, and it ended up being one of my most successful issues. It’s funny because I still look back on it and don’t understand the fight we had about that. Or the fact that we fought about every issue. I don’t know what was happening above him or around him, but boy was that a constant struggle. That having been said, I did get some good material out of it. I read an issue and I was making some smart observations back then about stuff I still believe in and somehow I got it in print. It’s kind of messy and paced strangely, but it’s there. Clearly it touched certain people in the way that I hoped it would. So in that weird way it was successful.
Were those four stories you had about different aspects of who she is?
I just read an academic essay about how the tenor of Wonder Woman had been changing. Post-George Perez, DC wanted something almost anti-Perez. They were very clear, don’t do what he did. They wanted her integrated into the DC Universe more. They wanted less mythology. She wasn’t seen as a particularly valuable asset and they were highly Superman and Batman focused, so I think she was the ugly stepsister – and treated as such. Editorial at the time didn’t have a point of view about the character. So I came on with a distinct point of view. I said, she forgot what her mission was. I wanted to remind her who her villains were. One story was about her relationship with her mother, which is such a crazy relationship. I forget what the fourth idea was. It was very specifically to get the character realigned so people would stop asking, who is she? Because every creator who came on that book took her in a different direction. Often in an attempt to either explore the political nature of the character or eschew it entirely. I think Mark Waid is on record as saying when you strip the character of her politics, she’s really boring. She’s most interesting when she’s most political. She changes radically decade to decade because ideologies about what she stands for change. Creators try to figure out how they feel about it, but still make her a salable property for Warner Brothers. I think that remains the longstanding conflict with that character.
Tumblr media
So often she’s portrayed as a warrior first and foremost.
I think that’s because it’s a very commercially viable iteration. Dudes like chicks with swords and shields and metal bikinis fighting monsters. I say that not to disparage. I think there’s truth to that. There are certainly some women who find empowerment in that idea and that imagery. That imagery is something that is familiar and easy to digest. It’s not a challenging iteration. It’s the default.
Default is a good way to describe it. And what was so interesting about Perez trying to incorporate mythology is that in the myths characters had so many facets. Athena wasn’t just the goddess of war but of wisdom and handicrafts.
She’s also the goddess of cities and politics. Part of the thing people forget – again because of imagery – is that very early in his run, the Amazons gave up their armor. They melted it down because the only reason they had it was to protect the Gates of Tartarus and keep the monsters from escaping. Once they were defeated, the Amazons had no reason to be warriors and so they melted down their swords and shields and said, now we can live in paradise. They did for years until War of the Gods. Then they all disappeared when Bill Messner-Loebs wrote the book because he didn’t want to write them. What’s interesting to me is that everyone seems to forget that for several years of Perez’s run, the Amazons did not use armor or swords or shields. They were not warriors. And they were happy about it! There’s that famous image of Wonder Woman in the gatefold cover and that’s the image that many people associate with that run, but for most of that run, there is no armor. There’s very little weaponry. And the Amazons are good with that.
One of my favorite things that ever happened to me was I reinvented Paradise Island during my run and it became a sort of cosmic United Nations and a school. George Perez called me and said, I have to tell you, that is the perfect culmination of everything that I wanted to do with the Amazons. That it was now this peaceful place. He was raving about this decision I made which was inspired by the roots he’d laid down in his run. I was just using what he’d established and building what made sense to me. He and I have less militarized versions of those characters in our heads, which again, is not always commercial and a different take from most people’s. Most people think to make them soldiers – not even warriors, but soldiers.

Three years ago today on June 12th, 2016, we watched in horror, as the news broke of the horrific tragedy in Orlando, at a gay nightclub, that had been hosting Latin night that evening.
The body count kept rising. We heard about the cellphones ringing in the pockets of those who would never answer them again.
The Facebook status that Pulse Orlando posted during the massacre still gives me the chills : "Everyone get out of pulse and keep running"
49 people were killed (technically 50, if we include the shooter, which #sorrynotsorry, I don't) and 53 were wounded at the Pulse Nightclub.
Since then countless mass shootings have taken place. I wish I could say we’ve done the victims justice by changing our laws and having more gun regulations, but that simply isn’t true. As a society we’ve become so numb to tragedy. It’s not always a conscious decision to become numb, it’s only human to try and protect yourself from tragedy and chaos. You can however, make the decision to pay attention and care.
49 people will never tell their friends and family how much they love them again, 49 people will never get to celebrate another holiday, 49 people will never be able to go to a gay club and dance again. It’s hard to imagine just how big the impact of something like the Pulse shooting has, but without a doubt it has changed thousands of peoples lives.
These victims deserve so much more. When we take a stand and make our voice heard, we are standing up for these 49 and the countless others who have tragically joined them in the past three years.
They deserve to be remembered:

As we remember those taken from us, take the time to reflect on how the inaction from our elected officials has led to the tragedies we have seen all too often. Reflect on the truth that black lives matter, that shootings in schools, and other places have got to stop, and how a lack of love for each other can lead to a tragedy that stains our communities deeply with that expressed hate.
It's been three years since the Pulse shooting. Since then, gun violence and violence against LGBTQ+ folks has only escalated. In this time of remembrance and grieving we must reach out to each other and show love and compassion.
Do not forget this
Don't let this take away pride from you
Don't let this scare you into hiding
Be careful and be safe
But don't stop existing
Dont stop vocalizing
Defy this shit and the people who spread hatred by being who you are
They cant silence us!

On June 12th, 2016, 49 innocent people were in a nightclub named Pulse just because they were apart of the LGBT community. Even though two years has passed it still hurts. I want to say something beautiful but I don't have anything I could say that hasn't been said before. All I have to say is that they will be forever missed and that we must never forget their names.

Orlando was my second home. I loved that city enough to have this tattoo of her skyline. Running through her is the Rainbow Pulse. Never forget our brothers and sisters we lost on June 11, 2016 to a horrible act of domestic terrorism. It's history like this that reminds us why we need to celebrate our diversity and our pride in who we are. Don't hide it. This is why we still fight to be ourselves and who we were born to be. We have lost many over the years to various threats, attacks, and oppression. Today we remember those lost to the Pulse Nightclub Shooting of June 12, 2016. - Stanley Almodovar III, 23 - Amanda Alvear, 25 - Oscar A. Subsequently, VERONICA comes in. RIGUEL leaves.
 VERONICA
(whispering)
What is he doing here?
 ANIKA
(In confusion)
Why? Do you know him?
 VERONICA
(In a pissed tone)
No, but all I know is that he’s an annoying guy who ruined my day just couple of minutes ago.
 ANIKA
But that guy happened to be your opponent. He is Attorney Fontanilla, the lawyer of the accused.
 VERONICA
(In shock)
What?! He’s a lawyer? He didn’t even say sorry properly earlier and now he’s acting like a hero here? Fighting for justice? Hah! Let me show him what a real lawyer is.
 ANIKA
Veronica Perez Garcia, what are you planning to do?
 VERONICA
(Smirks)
Nothing. Let’s just go and start looking for evidences we can use against that Fontanilla-annoying-guy.
(Scene 3)
VERONICA goes outside the CA Department
A STRANGER suddenly holds her hand.
STRANGER
(Begs)
Ms. Garcia, please help me, my son is innocent.
 VERONICA
(Talks softly)
Sir---wait, please stop grabbing my hand. Sir, please let go. There’s nothing I can do anymore.
 STANGER
(Begging)
No, I need you to listen. My son is innocent but now he’s in the prison.
RIGUEL parks his car. Hears a COMMOTION. Goes to the scene. Sees VERONICA being harassed.
RIGUEL
Sir, let go of her hand. If you refused to, we could file a case against you.
 STRANGER
(softly)
Ms. Garcia, please reconsider. I really need your help.
 RIGUEL
(In a concerned tone)
Are you alright, Miss? What does he need from you?
 VERONICA
(Raging)
None of your business!
 RIGUEL
(In a confused tone)
Wait, why are you shouting at me instead of saying thank you? What did I do?
 VERONICA
(Sarcastic)
Well, as far as I remember, we bumped at each other yesterday in the coffee shop and you threw my coffee but wait there’s more, you also ruined my dress!
 RIGUEL
(Apologetic)
Oh right, I am so sorry. I didn’t mean it, it’s just that I’m in a hurry. If you want, I could replace that coffee today, if you are free.
 VERONICA
(shrugs off)
Fine. Let’s go for a coffee, just meet me on the same coffee shop.
(Scene 4)
VERONICA and RIGUEL walks into a coffee shop. Buys a coffee. THEY decide to go home.
 VERONICA
Thanks for the coffee, Mr. Fontanilla.
 RIGUEL
Welcome, I owe you one. By the way, just call me Riguel, Mr. Fontanilla is too formal.
VERONICA goes inside her car, but it won’t start.
 VERONICA
(pissed tone)
This car is just fine earlier!
 RIGUEL
(Concerned)
What happened?
 VERONICA
I don’t know. It just won’t start.
RIGUEL tries to fix VERONICA’S car but in the end, RIGUEL also gave up.
RIGUEL
I’ll just give you a ride if it’s okay with you.
 VERONICA
(Shy and hesitant)
No, it’s fine. I’ll just take a cab.
 RIGUEL
(insisting tone)
Again, I insist. It’s getting late and what if that man is still following you?
By the way, where do you live?
 VERONICA
Hillsborough Park but if you’re out of the way, I’ll just take a cab.
 RIGUEL
(Surprised)
What? You mean, we live in the same neighborhood?
 VERONICA
(Astonishes)
Really? What a coincidence.
 RIGUEL
Yes, so there’s no way you’re taking a cab.
THEY leave the coffee shop. Goes straight to VERONICA’s house. THEY arrive. RIGUEL opens the door for VERONICA.
VERONICA
Thank you for today.
 RIGUEL
(Apologetic)
No problem. I’m sorry for making a bad impression yesterday.
VERONICA
(Goodbye tone)
Forget it. You should go home, it’s already late. Thank you for the coffee and ride.
  (Scene 5)
Next morning, RIGUEL sees VERONICA walking while on his way to work. He beeps his car.
 VERONICA
(surprised)
Oh my God!
 RIGUEL
(laughs)
What’s making you frown so early in the morning?
 VERONICA
(irritated tone)
You almost gave me a heart attack! I’m just pissed off because my car is not working.
 RIGUEL
Still not? Come on, hop in.
 VERONICA
(agreeing tone)
What? No! I don’t want to be a burden and besides, it looks like you have a work?
 RIGUEL
Yeah, but I still have hours before my work.
 VERONICA
Fine, whatever.
RIGUEL starts the engine and drive to                                                                                  her office.
VERONICA
So, what’s your work?
 RIGUEL
(mocking tone)
Getting to know each other stage, huh?
 VERONICA
(reacts with disbelief)
Stop assuming please, I’m just curious.
 RIGUEL
(cleared his throat and started to be serious)
I am a lawyer and I work for Happy Firm. How about you? I saw you yesterday in CA Department of Justice Riverside.
 VERONICA
Technically, I work there, I run errands for them.
 VERONICA’s stomach grumbles.
 VERONICA
(Surprised and laughs)
Oh my God, that’s definitely not my tummy!
 RIGUEL
(embarrassed tone)
Fine, it’s mine! But let me explain, I usually don’t eat my breakfast because, first, I’m always early for work and second, no one cooks for me so I don’t really have time for it.
 VERONICA
(concerned face)
Do you want to eat first? We can drive thru from the fast food nearby our office.
 RIGUEL
No, it’s fine. I’m used to it. Besides, you’ll be late.
 VERONICA
Okay, if you say so.
They arrive in their offices and bid goodbye. RIGUEL sees VERONICA walking again outside their subdivision and asks her to hop in his car.
 RIGUEL
(asks Veronica with a jolly face)
Hey Veronica! Hop in, I’ll drive you into your office.
What’s that? Why do you have an excess bag?
 VERONICA
(joyfully handed the paper bag to Riguel)
Oh, this for you! Since, you’re driving me to my work and even driving me to home. I’ll cook for you in exchange.
 RIGUEL
(surprised)
Wow, thank you. I really appreciate it.
 VERONICA
No problem, I’ll just leave it here later. So, how’s work?
 RIGUEL
(frowns)
It’s fine but a bit stressful. I’m handling a murder case. I’m fighting for the accused, I don’t know but they kept on blaming him even though the evidences are not pointing him. Something’s wrong.
 VERONICA
(inquisitive)
What makes you think that he is not the killer?
 RIGUEL
(confident)
I just know and after all, he’s my client.
Months had passed, it's been a routine for them to come to work and eat breakfast together. One day…
RIGUEL patiently waits for VERONICA outside her house.  Eventually RIGUEL decides to go.
(Scene 6)
RIGUEL enters the court and sees VERONICA standing on the other side with the family of the victim. Upon seeing VERONICA, RIGUEL has realizations until the hearing ends that leads for veronica to win the case and he concluded that she used him to win her case.
 JUDGE
Members of the jury, attorneys, and court personnel, thank you for the respect that you have given the law. However, as you leave the court, remember that you have a duty to uphold the oath of confidentiality concerning these proceedings. I hereby declare the trial adjourned.
The JUDGE bangs the gavel. RIGUEL walks out from the court. VERONICA chases him.
 VERONICA
(teary eye)
Riguel, wait, let me explain!
 VERONICA chases RIGUEL.
 RIGUEL
(disappointed)
Go ahead, explain how you fooled me all this time.
 VERONICA
Fooled? I never did that! It was never my intention to make you feel this way. I’m sorry, please believe me.
 RIGUEL
(sarcasm and mockery)
You’re really a good actress, huh. You even cooked for me and all but then all of those were front act? To spy on me and win this case then congratulations because you succeed!
 VERONICA
(gently)
Okay, at first, I saw you at the crime scene of this case then that time, I was mad at you. I was so determined to show you that I am better than you but believe me, I never planned for this to happen. I never planned to spy on you or what. I am not that shallow!
 RIGUEL
(shouts)
Do you think I’ll believe on you? After everything you’ve done? After showing up here out of nowhere?
 VERONICA
(teary eyes)
I am sorry.
  RIGUEL
(shouting)
I asked you, right? I asked you about your work and you told me you’ll just run errands for the office but just a few minutes ago, you stood up there, accusing someone!
 VERONICA
(cracking voice)
Yes, but that’s because I still don’t know you enough that time. That’s why I didn’t tell you about my job. I’m sorry. I promise, I won’t lie to you again.
 RIGUEL
I’m sorry but you missed your chance. I won’t let you lie to me again.
 VERONICA
(tears started to fall down)
I love you. I really do. Please, believe me.
 RIGUEL
(frustrated and disappointed)
You didn’t love me. You used me. For God sake, I am not an object! But you treated me like one. But you know what’s more painful? After everything you’ve done, after you0 lied to me, I still love you but I can’t stand being with you knowing that you succeed by ruining someone else’s life. Congratulations, Veronica!
 VERONICA
(shouting and crying heavily)
Riguel!
(Scene 7)
After three months, Veronica is promoted and sent to another place because of the case she won against Riguel.
 EMPLOYEE
Good morning Ms. Veronica!
VERONICA smells the EMPLOYEE’S PERFUME. VERONICA thinks about RIGUEL
EMPLOYEE
(concerned tone)
Ms. Veronica, are you alright?
 VERONICA
(jolted tone)
I’m sorry, I just remembered someone.
The EMPLOYEE exits. VERONICA goes to Backyard Brew, the coffee shop where VERONICA and RIGUEL first met.
VERONICA orders a COFFEE and spills accidentally to RIGUEL
VERONICA
Oh my God, I’m sorry, sir.
 RIGUEL
(cold voice)
It’s fine.
VERONICA looks at the guy (RIGUEL) as she hears RIGUEL’S voice.
 VERONICA
(In shock)
Riguel? Oh my God, it’s me, Veronica. How have you been?
 RIGUEL
(in frustration)
I have to go, I’m sorry.
 VERONICA
(sobbing)
Wait, Riguel, I have to take this chance because if I didn’t, I might regret again not only for three months but for the rest of my life. Riguel, I still love you.
 RIGUEL
(emotionless)
Veronica, when I told you I love you, I really do and after we fought, I just wanted space to think but you, you chose to walk away. I even waited for you, but I realized something, waiting for you was like waiting for the stars to go down, it’s useless and disappointing.

homonum replied to your post: What do you think of the Bana-Mighdall?
What all have you read ww wise?
It’s hard for me to keep track because I mostly read a few issues from different writers to get a taste and then sort of lose interest. WMM’s run was my introduction to the character, I’ve read all of his WW and Comic Cavalcade issues and a good chunk of his Sensation Comics work. Read Perez and Simone all the way through. And then it gets harder to keep track, there’s all the digital Sensation series, at least 1/3 of the digital Legend of WW series, some Rucka, some Jimenez, some Kanigher, some assorted Bronze Age issues. Soule’s New 52 SM/WW run, a little of Azzarello, Morrison’s Earth-1 GN. I feel like I’m forgetting some but that’s all I can think of now.

June 12, 2016 #Orlando
Today, I am thinking about the beautiful angels we lost last year during Pulse’s shooting in Orlando. It was the deadliest mass shooting in America, and it saddens me that people look at it as something that was deserving based on whom they choose to love or whom they respect and support. It saddens me to think of the people who choose to ignore the issue because they don’t see it belonging to them or affecting them. It hurts when people use this conversation to further fuel hate and discrimination amongst our Muslim and Arab brothers and sisters. And when I consistently see the erasure of people of color who were there that night, I fight to hold back tears.
Targeted on Latin night. Killed not in a gay club, but a sanctuary where expression isn’t limited to societal norms.  I can’t forget.
I want to remember the spirit of the 49 victims at Pulse. Who are in my heart today, and everyday.
