The journey began with a survey of the coastlines and along the borders. Then in January 1941, the idea of constructing a wall was drawn up. It took over a year of construction to finish the structure. The Atlantic Wall was comprised of several fortifications, barbed wire and anti-tank obstacles. Today marks 76 years since the Enola Gay 🛩️, piloted by Paul Tibbets 👨✈️, dropped 'Little Boy' 💣, the first atomic bomb, on the city of Hiroshima. The design and construction of Little Boy, which used Uranium-235 ⚛️, was a monumental achievement of the Manhattan Project 🌉. Originally, the 'Thin Man' 🤵♂️ design was considered, but ultimately, Little Boy's gun-type fission weapon 🔫 was chosen for its destructive power. The target selection 🎯 for Hiroshima was carefully planned, but the effects of the bombing were devastating, with an immediate death toll ☠️ of approximately 140,000 people and countless more suffering from radiation poisoning and long-term health effects 🤕☢️. The decision to use atomic bombs continues to be debated 💭, but it ultimately led to Japan's surrender in World War II 🌏. The German Atlantic Wall was a 700 kilometer long defense line which stretched from the Pas de Calais to Norway, France and Germany and was built by Nazi Germany during World War II. The wall was intended primarily to prevent Allied ships and raiders from breaking out of the Normandy beachhead, but was also meant to deter the invasion of mainland Europe, which the Allies hoped to accomplish with the D-Day landings.
