I don't know if it's because I'm older or because it's my second time reading it but omg, Lolita is so much worse than I remember.
Humbert talking about how he would hear her crying every night. Her bad grades. The fact she was hiding hoardes of money from him and he would steal it from her so she couldn't escape. She obviously planned the escape the night she ran away while still at Beardsley. The way he described her, only one year later, at age 13, she was beginning to look too old for him and his attraction was fading. He took her innocence and when the trauma aged her, she looked too old for him. Lying to her that the police would arrest her too, so she wouldn't tell anyone. The way he romanticizes him raping her, or uses metaphors to describe it.
HE FUCKING PAID HER TO GIVE HIM AN HJ WHILE SHE WAS AT SCHOOL! HE IS A DISGUSTING PERSON! I WANT HIM TO DIE!
This book is just so amazing yet so horrifying at the same time. How he tries to justify himself, how he ignores her obvious signs of trauma and how she hated him.

People are out here saying Lolita is gross and problematic while actively praising books like After and Colleen Hoover's books- books that actually present an abusive relationship as just 'passionate' and excuse violent and manipulative behavior because the man 'has a bad past'.
