Babuji .. a prominent member of the Freedom Fighters for Independent India .. and how his modest home was opened for secret meetings and a place to hide, for the freedom fighters ..

In one of his conversations with me he did describe how the great freedom fighter Chandrashekhar 'Azaad' had sought refuge at his home and remained rolled up in a 'bistar band' .. बिस्तर बंद .. the 'HoldAll' of my times, a canvas type rolled packaging with straps to tie it up, inside which was laid a mattress, pillows, your shoes and other essentials for travel .. all then rolled up and tied in leather straps, which then became an essential baggage element during travel .. it would and was opened up by releasing the straps, unrolling it and viola, a ready made bed - mattress pillows and all .. open it up on the bed or floor or a train berth .. most convenient and the most important baggage material for travel .. well on train and cars and bus travels .. until the airplane arrived as the more, now common mode of travel ..

So 'Azad' remained rolled up in the 'holdall' - a most convenient and descriptive word coined for this kind of baggage essential - and secretly spent a night there at Babuji's home .. rolled up in a holdall !!

The dedication and will of the freedom fighter ! Incredible !!

Chandrashekhar 'Azad' later took on the British forces, a large contingent, in the famous Allahabad park, then known as Alfred Park, alone, hiding behind a tree, firing bullets from his pistol , until when his ammunition was exhausted and when he felt he would be caught, he ended his life behind that tree, by shooting his last bullet .. at himself .. not wanting to give himself up to the British ..

The park has now been renamed in his honour .. The Chandrashekhar Azad Park ..

I spent a large amount of time at this park, for picnics etc., and this was where the popular Allahabad Flower Show used to be held, where I went with Ma .. she won several cups for Best Garden, and Best Flower, the rose, competition !

I remember seeing that famous tree, behind which Azad took shelter and fought the British contingent ..

The park was a large expanse of green and flowers and trees right almost in the centre of the city .. a canopied structure in the middle of the park, was inhabited by a Band, every Sunday, playing old tunes of the time ..

The park also had a most well kept grass tennis court, where I saw some great International players during their tournament, organised by the Allahabad Civic authorities .. I cannot remember their names .. was too young for that .. but they were from Britain, and some European countries , I think ..

They were invited for a tea reception at Justice Mootham's residence, the then Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court ..

If my memory does not fail me .. Justice Mootham ! yes that name is correct in memory ..

Mapping Festival 2023 Celebrates Low Tech Art

So um, yes I do also play the redheaded stepchild of the Fallout franchise with my housemate because it’s the only multiplayer Fallout option we have, hooray. Here’s a quick piece of my 76 character, VJ D’Milieu.

She enjoys:

- Sofia Daguerre, my beloved (again with my characters and the loveable geeks)

- Daphne (Sofia and VJ and kiddo Daphne = adorkable geeky family. Headcanon is that she also has at least one bio kid b/c she volunteered as surrogate and bio-mom for a pair of friends, the female-bodied of which could not carry a child)

- scavenging, collecting the group’s ammo back off dead enemies - PLEASE take back your #$&!ing railway spikes so she can walk

- creature taming - enjoys having a giant guard sloth to greet visitors

- hazardous materials acquisition - bring on the glowing flora

- trespassing on others’ property to see the cool shit they built

- reestablishing the West Virginian Minutemen Responders, including supplying her buddy’s infirmary (my housemate built her main camp into a Responders hospital and I love it)

- building camps that create foot travel access through/across otherwise impassable natural barriers on the map (usually cliffs)

- being the group chemist/herbalist: her main camp/house/shelter are FILLED with plants. Also the group repair master/ammosmith - grats, you still haven’t run out of ammo and your gear is still intact as we begin the 347th scorchbeast fight of today’s Cranberry Bog session

- non-raid combat: melee or sniping; raid combat: begrudgingly resigned to using spin-up heavy weapons and complementing perk set/SPECIAL loadout

She dislikes:

- The Overseer. VJ thinks she’s irresponsible as shit and would deck her immediately if she wasn’t marked as an essential npc. (I agree with VJ. Bitch, I too graduated early from an advanced degree program/was super young when I got certified to do my job, and I really hope I didn’t come across to people as wholeheartedly believing I was a goddamn Mary Sue and entitled to reverence no matter what shitty choices I made)

- don’t make VJ clean up all your messes and carry your emotional baggage and kill off the fiancée you abandoned to a fate worse than death as the trade-off for getting bribed with a nice cushy control vault job/not whistleblowing on Vault-Tec’s wildly unethical experimentation. Or, y’know, do all those things and make her listen to holotapes full of your whining about it

- sure as hell don’t do the above while you a) run off on a goddamn vacation/journey of self-realization (because wtf else are you doing going everywhere but to the missile silos and leaving me holotapes to find like this is a goddamn Pioneer Scouts scavenger hunt), b) abandon literally all of your charges, c) throw a temper tantrum by holotape about using nukes when that is the sole option to get to/kill off the scorchbeast Queen and keep everyone from turning into ultracite zombies, and get to/kill off the wendigo colossus that we really don’t need running amok either, and then d) crop back up and act like you’re still running the show

- also sure as hell don’t then voluntell VJ to drag your ass through the Nuka building and then go make settlers and raiders sing kumbaya together at the start of the next main quest arc

Rural Heritage at Piallamore - History Reborn

Built with pieces of history, this new homestead embodies modern rural living. A derelict old tobacco drying barn once stood on this farm and when it was time for it to go, we reclaimed the bricks for the owners - one by one. Now, these old bricks take pride of place - repurposed to create this new home and serve for many more years to come. Complementing the bricks with traditional materials and colours has ensured this home will never truly date - a piece of Australia that looks like it belongs.

Working with the slope of the land as it falls down to the river, a framed floor using bearers and joists keeps the home high and avoided the need to dig it into a flat pad, plus it allows an improved view of the river flats below. The result: greater visual impact is achieved, and the need for a host of other water management solutions is eliminated.

Outdoor living is well served by an undercover alfresco area with direct views to the river flats below, and a smaller private verandah with direct access from the main bedroom. With composite timber decking being laid on each of these, minimum maintenance will be required to keep these looking great.

Tiles reach to the ceiling in each bathroom, and the showers feature arched screens, custom sized to fit the needs of the shower spaces. The bath is positioned so you can just lay back and enjoy the view as you relax on a lazy day.

In the ensuite, the asymmetrical mirror is a highlight. This is something the owners were keen on having, but we couldn’t just go out and buy it off the shelf; a specific size was needed to fit the space and double vanity so that it was still functional. So Justin drew up a template and it was custom made to perfectly suit the spot!

Solid spotted gum timber floorboards, secretly nailed, grace the living areas, lending them a sense of warmth and country. A raking ceiling provides spaciousness. The beautiful shaker style kitchen with stone benchtops is complemented by a walk-in pantry for loads of extra storage and is perfect for a rural home. A purpose-built study nook with VJ panelling and solid timber shelving sits adjacent so it’s easy to multitask whilst cooking.

Full width double-glazed stacking doors from the living area are great for climate control without the need for heavy drapes. They lead to the undercover alfresco area, and allow the river flats view to be enjoyed from inside or outside. Entertaining is made easy on the alfresco via a servery kitchen window.

This is such a welcome place to come home to; the owners enter via the laundry/mudroom where there’s room to sit, take off your shoes and generally “land”, before moving into the heart of the home.

With ventilation paths, insulation, double glazing and multiple heating and cooling options, it is designed and built for comfort and low running costs; not only to benefit the owners now, but for the lifetime of the dwelling. A house with roots in the past now looks to the future.

History is not lost! This home is a tangible connection between the old of the farm, and the new.

We worked with the owners of this house through the demolition of the original tobacco barn, the design phase for the new home, and the build phase: taking it from Concept to Creation. Working with the slope, the views and the original bricks allowed us to create a unique home that makes the most of its location and fulfils the wants and needs of its owners. For the first time, I included audio clips* of the songs** being discussed. Since People are the Enemy is Andy’s show and not mine, I wanted to be very careful about including copyrighted material. Also more work etc. But when I included “Genius of Love” I couldn’t help but include a little snippet of it, and it became an “ask forgiveness rather than permission” situation. Luckily he said it was OK as long as I kept them short and/or talked over! Somehow I forgot that Audio Hijack existed so for a few weeks, I just played the songs through my laptop speakers and recorded the audio that way. Not great Bob!
