Tangerine had your number memorized - he ought to, given how many times he has dialed it. In fact, he memorized it as soon as you wrote it on the piece of napkin when he met you in that rooftop bar in London.

He was working with Lemon, completely focused on their target, until he saw you getting harassed. He stepped in, kissing your cheek, and met the man's eyes. The dude was visibly shaken.

"You didn't say you had a new toy."

"I don't owe you anything, Marcus. Least of all a list of who I'm seeing." You glared at the man.

"Have fun with a used woman." Marcus spat at Tangerine. As he turned around, Tangerine wanted to grab him by the neck and throw him off of the roof, but your hand stopped him.

"Leave him. His ego is wounded, and he's lashing out." You waved your hand and let go of the situation.

"What a child." Tangerine muttered.

"Male fragility more like it."

"Do you usually go for men like that?"

"I don't date boys - him included." You finally met Tangerines' eyes.

"So what happened to him?"

"I told him I'm not interested, but he has yet to grasp that idea."

"How many times did you have to say no?"

"I think now it was the fourth time."

"Why keep being polite?"

"Because being mean might get me in trouble."

"Well, I'd be happy to assist you. If you want him to stop bothering you, just say the word and you will never hear from him again."

Your eyebrows shot up and you considered the man in front of you. He was very handsome. Strong, but at the same time still delicate.

"I don't doubt you'd do that, but I don't need your help. Thank you, though. That was very kind of you to jump in before." You smiled at him and jumped off the bar stool. Only then did you realize how much taller he really was.

"Wait. I know that this is a bit forward of me, but I was hoping you'd give me your phone number?" Tangerine wanted to bite his tongue immediately after saying those words.

He was glad his mouth was quicker than his brain. Five years later, and you were still in his life. The phone rang six times, before he heard your still groggy voice pick up.

"It's nine am, Love. Are you still in bed?" Tangerine grinned.

"Ethan, morning." He could hear you smile. He loved hearing his name roll from your lips. He could picture you right now, lazing around, still in your underwear with his T-shirt, with the work laptop turned on, giving the illusion that you were already working.

"It's already evening here." He almost scolded.

"When are you coming back? I feel like it's been weeks since I saw you."

"Have you been thinking about me?" Tangerine smirked as he whispered into the phone, looking around to see if anyone was listening.

"You know I have." You smirked into the phone on your side of the world. "Although I appreciate that no one is hogging the whole bed every night." You joked.

"I hate to tell you this, Love, but you're the bed hog."

"Agree to disagree." You smiled. "Are you okay?"

"I'm doing good. How are you holding up?" Tangerine looked out of the window at the passing landscape.

"I'm okay. I met some friends yesterday, and we ended up going for cocktails. It was a bad idea, drinking on a work day." You giggled.

"I'm glad you had fun. But take it easy today, and please don't go out jogging if you feel sick."

"Ethan, stop worrying about me, just come home as soon as you can, okay?" Your voice got serious.

"Okay. We are almost done, I'll be there hogging the bed again in no time." Tangerine smiled.

"Okay. I love you." You smacked your lips, sending him a vitual kiss.

"I love you." He smiled and hung up.

Contrary to his fantasy, you have been up for the last 3 hours, worrying about your boyfriend. He should've been back several days ago, but he took an extra job since he was already in Tokyo. But something felt off to you, and you have been worried since then. Going out drinking helped you out with putting the nagging feeling away at least for a bit. But then you woke up from another nightmare, still drunk from a few hours before.

However, hearing him just now made you feel so much better and you were able to focus and stop dreading what may go wrong. You went back to hoping and impatiently waiting for Ethan to be back, safe in your arms.

So I'm reading "Biological Exuberance: Animal Homosexuality and Natural Diversity" by Bruce Bagemihl.

And it's from 1999 so half of it is "yes for real homosexuality is found in nature, plz no discriminate :(" But then I got to the chapter on "Nonreproductive and Alternative Sexualities in Animals" and

Vitually every animal population includes nonbreeding individuals. There is a tendency to regard the urge to procreate among animals as instinctual, all-pervasive, and unstoppable. While heterosexual interactions often do have that quality, there are just as many examples of animals who do not reproduce: individuals who actively remove themselves from the breeding cycle...

and

Why do animals not reproduce? Biologists have coined the term reproductive suppression to refer to various forms of nonbreeding, implying that all animals would breed if they could but are somehow "prevented" from doing so. However, the underlying mechanisms involved in nonbreeding are far more complex than this name implies...animals are often "voluntary" nonbreeders...

And listen. Listen. There's another quote that I thought was referenced somwhere in this book (cannot for the life of me find which page it is on though) that's like "when animals do something we like, it's natural, and when they do something we don't like, it's animalistic." We don't need to "prove" that asexuality is biological in nature in order for asexual people to deserve rights and respects. We've gone through this dance with homosexuality and transgenderism.

But a human being is an animal, and studying other animals shapes our understanding of what it means to be one kind of animal among many. And the idea that an individual's purpose is to reproduce is pretty capitalistic, if you think about it.

The other half of this book is a list of which animals have documented homosexual behaviors, and a description of those behaviors, and even though a lot of it is "X percent of males were observed doing Y behavior, X percent of interactions were Y in nature," it really drives home that animals are complex individuals. No one wolf is going to behave exactly like another wolf, any more than any human will act exactly like another human. Maybe there is an evolutionary advantage, maybe evolution is just weird and messy, but that's how the world is. The whole argument that "if everyone were gay/asexual/engaging in nonreproductive sexualities then the species would go extinct" is technically true but that's an extremely individualistic viewpoint. As a species - as a community - there is room for so much more.

Basic biology teaches us that all animals are driven by the need to reproduce, but advanced biology once again reveals a more complex picture.

This is just a long way to say that I didn't think I needed ace affirmation in scientific literature but actually I kind of did.

Mary and Kate in bruises I think is my favourite iteration of their relationship that I've written if I'm honest. Kate sees Mary as her mother in every way that matters, and Mary has loved and protected her all her life.

Even through the thick fog of Mary's own grief she would not allow Kate and Edwina to be taken from her. Even when her parents tried to have her remarry, and they agreed to take Kate and Edwina in, until Kate was married at least, and Edwina educated, Mary wouldn't let them go. Even though it would mean a life of genteel poverty, she was their mother. Even when he grief felt so thick she couldn't drag herself from bed she would smile at Kate who would come and sit with her. Beautiful. You and your sister and the only reason to go on now.

Mary is her mother. Which is why Kate's so scared for her. Because she doesn't know what she'll do, the person she'll be if Mary dies. And she'd only just reclaimed the part of herself that went to the grave with her father.

So no, Kate doesn't really know what she'll do without Mary. But she hopes she doesn't have to find out.

I'll never stop finding it laughable when someone talks about how easy it is for me to talk to people or how they wanted to be "shameless" in a vibe that makes it seem like I'm good with people lol

I think that in everyday life I get along well with strangers, it's not like I'm shy and have problems because I can't talk to strangers if necessary. But making friends? Forget it! Doesn't matter if it is real life or vitual, I'm horrible.

In real life, these relationships always end, I just can't maintain them. For me, this just shows how I can have cool acquaintances to talk to, but not friends. Every long-lasting relationship becomes weak and eventually disappears, because it seems that over time we do our own things and suddenly we no longer fit together. The pandemic didn't help anything either.

In digital, I think I do well with other Brazilians. Better than in real life because it's easy to find someone with the same tastes on the internet. Still, in the last few months it's gotten weird because I have less and less anything in common with my online friends from years ago.

When it comes to gringos, however? Well, it's chaos in my mind. It always seems like I'm being invasive and unnecessary. My personality is already more exaggerated than I'd like to admit, but I also know how Brazilians are known for being "too much" and I wonder if that's the image I portray sometimes. And then there are also all these pejorative things that I've seen people say and I can't understand why people are like that.

It's kind of funny because before this whole thing, I'd never been insecure about being Brazilian. It's not like it's perfect here, it's a country that I've honestly complained more about than praised. Still, I already knew from when I was a teenager that I would never leave here, so eventually I just dealt with the idea of trying to make the best of it in Brazil. But, you know, it was always more about fear of how unsafe it is to live here or how unfair it might be, it was never about the identity itself. I know there are Brazilians who despise Brazilians, but I'm not like that and I find this attitude ridiculous. My problem has always been more about being in Brazil than about being Brazilian.

And yet, among other Brazilians (in real life) I feel as if they are noticing all the time how inexperienced and uninteresting I am. Everyone seems to have stories to tell, favorite places, moments of excitement, and I'm simply boring. It's as if I lacked "seasoning".

Online with gringos… well, there are types and types of interactions.

There is, of course, the first and most detestable of them. The one where they call me a monkey, uneducated, uncivilized and similar things at the first opportunity. Even if they don't call me that directly, I occasionally find a xenophobic post about us.

And then there's the other people that isn't offensive, it's more of a barrier or something like that. Either they misunderstand my tone, as if I'm always angry at times when I'm not, or I feel as if I'm more invasive than intended. It seems more and more pointless to try.

Anyway, it's getting more and more tiring how much of a failure I am at relationships, so I think my strategy for now will simply be to avoid interacting even more than I was already avoiding lol

No aurora tonight...Boohoo. Bummer. No luck. But we surely made the effort. Went to a camp in Norway on a mountain in the Arctic Circle.

Why did I think if you went to the right place, at the right time of year, you would surely see it at least once? Not at all. It seems they are basically unpredictable in this place where the weather changes are rapid, including cloud cover. Some people saw it through a camera lens. Meh. I WANTED to see it with the naked eye. Maybe some day I'll try again...in Alaska!

But had some good laughs with Mom that we survived the excursion of life and death (!) So, we went on a tender boat from the ship (surprisingly, absolutely nothing mentioned about safety, were the life jackets are, etc.), on to a winding mountain road in one of a number of buses, to a camp located at a slate quarry. As Mom and I walked down the pitch black uneven, rockstrewn path, to an area with vitually no lights, complete with trip hazards and falls waiting to happen (!) Could not see where were walking. It was about 25 degrees, but thankfully no wind. After listening to a presentation, we looked into the Sami style dwelling (a teepee), where people were sitting around a fire. Then we found a bench, and later moved to seats around a bonfire. Brr. To our surprise, there was someone in a wheelchair, people with double canes, etc. I wonder if they, too, didn't really know what to expect (?)....The return at about 11 pm was basically alk the passengers on the various ship buses in one "queue" up the dark path to get on any of the buses. Mom had the flashlight on her phone on....Then the path to the tender where we were the last two on.

I was looking for a seat on one side, and turned when I heard Mom say, "unless you want me to sit in your lap?" - making people laugh. She was a good comedienne :) It seemed like the only thing to do was climb up to the seats outside - I called out to the Princess employee something like "Mom is 93 years old (actually, not for another month), had a hip operation, and I don't think she should be climbing up there!" Somebody then said there was a seat near her and I told Mom to stop trying to climb up! Oy vey!

But we made it out without a fall (!)

I'm thinking this whole Northern Lights excursion thing from ships is mostly a lucrative tourist thing - as the chances of actually seeing them in a 2 hour window is slim. Maybe you'd have a chance if you go on a tour to "chase" them, or, better yet, camp out for days.
