The vibes you give off hmm...you really like rock music maybe?))
Spot on 😄 Lordi & Teräsbetoni were really the gateway drug for me for watching Eurovision every year, and when I saw Softengine I decided I needed to see the show live. I was a huge metalhead from around 16 to 26 years old before I started to gravitate more towards the diversity of genres in Eurovision, but some of my favourite entries are still very heavy.

Jukebox January: Day 22
Day 22: Songs starting with V
This song made me listen to Olivia Rodrigo more.
HERÄÄ!!!
Makes me wanna dance.
Deserved better on Eurovision.
I love any song that Hayley features.
This one gives me chills every time.
There was a time I listened to it a lot. I was obsessed with the music video with Noel Fielding as Vlad.

Four countries will be picking their Eurovision entries this weekend! First up, I’m looking at the songs in Vidbir:
Mélovin – Dreamer
Anka – Палала (Palala)
Alyona Alyona and Jerry Heil – Teresa & Maria
Drevo – Endless Chain
Yagody – Tsunamia
Ziferblat – Place I Call Home
Nahaba – Glasss
Ingret – Keeper
Skylerr – Time Is Running Out
Nazva – Slavic English
Yaktak – Lalala
As usual, Ukraine are bringing plenty of quality and some decent variety. I really enjoy a lot of the songs here, but there’s a huge gap between most of them and my top three.
I promise I tried to give all these songs a fair shake and judge them equally… but I was always going to be biased towards Mélovin. 2018 was such a strong year in terms of heavy hitters for me, with songs like Mall and Viszlát nyár, and Under the Ladder was still one of my favourites. So is it really such a surprise the person who delivered it would come back with another entry I enjoy? Even if it is just because I already knew the artist, Dreamer is still easily my favourite song here. The energy is perfect, the way the music moves gets me so excited, it’s everything I want from a song! The slow, barely accompanied opening sets the stage before the music builds up, raising the tension. I only hope the falsetto will sound as good live as it does recorded, because I think it’s done so well when it’s used in the pre-chorus – the contrast between the two singing styles makes the chorus hit even harder. The melody is addictive and I love overall mood of this song – it may not be quite as dramatic as Under the Ladder but it’s still got that dark edge, and it’s just as catchy. My only problem is that it ends too suddenly, and too soon!
I ended up putting Palala second – Ukraine has had plenty of great songs which fuse modern and folk music before, but this one easily lives up to them as far as I’m concerned. The flute sounds so good over that beat, and the chorus is super catchy, with that little ‘whoo-hoo’ between every line being a great hook. However, I only just prefer it to Teresa & Maria, which is also fantastic. It sounds very polished without compromising on emotion. I love the chord progression in the chorus, both it and the sound of the backing choir create this bittersweet yet hopeful mood. I also really like the rap verse, with it’s sharp, pacy flow switching it up and adding a new layer of interest to the music, before the chorus grounds it again. I do have to admit I didn’t find it the most impactful song on first listen – I may have been slightly distracted by another song in the selection – but by second listen I was wondering how on earth I missed it.
Ukraine will jump right to the top of my ranking if they pick any of my top three this weekend. Mélovin has been to Eurovision before, and I don't think Dreamer is any better than Under the Ladder, so although it's my personal favourite I would be happy seeing someone else get their turn to represent Ukraine. This is Jerry Heil’s third attempt, with each song being much better than the last in my opinion, so I’d be very happy if this was her year. There’s no doubt in my mind that she and Alyona Alyona would qualify with ease with Teresa & Maria, and even be real contenders in the final if they stage it well.

I'm a huge Lord Of The Lost fan and have been since like 2016 so seeing them in ESC is a massive thing for me, how do you think they will do in the results.
At the moment I'd say around 20th place. It depends on their place in the running order and if Australia qualifies to the final (I'm pretty sure they will).
I considered two factors here: how well rock/heavy entries like Blood and Glitter usually do at Esc and how well Germany has done at Esc in the previous years. Answer to both: not so well.
These are some of the entries Blood and Glitter reminds me of and their results in the final: 2016 Cyprus: Minus One - Alter Ego, 21st place 2017 Ukraine: O.Torvald - Time, 24th place 2018 Hungary: AWS - Viszlát Nyár, 21st place 2022 Finland: The Rasmus - Jezebel, 21st place
There have been some rock entries to do well of course, like Iceland 2019 and Finland & Italy 2021, but they all did better in televote than with juries. In my personal opinion those entries were also all more original and creative rock songs than Blood and Glitter.
I'm afraid Germany might be too middle of the road and formulaic for juries to get excited about it. As for the televote... well, Blind Channel got their televoting 12 points from Estonia, Iceland and Sweden 🙂 Germany on the other hand can't trust their neighbours to give even a single televote point as we have unfortunately seen in the past. I'm still expecting them to gather at least a few dozen points, some of those definitely from Finland 🥰
