Now marks the time of year when many schools, libraries and other institutions hold their annual egg incubating and chick hatching programs. These programs, designed to depict the stages of embryonic development and then provide a “wow factor” with cute, newly hatched chicks for children and other patrons to see, while most likely created with the best of intentions, are not all they’re cracked up to be. *See links below for a deep dive into why hatching programs are bad.*
Do you know of a place near you that is participating in one of these programs? Let your voice be heard! These chicks cannot speak up for themselves so it is our duty to do it for them.
Here is an example of an email we sent to our local library who has scheduled an egg incubating and hatching program for this spring. Please feel free to use and/or adapt.
[SCHOOL/LIBRARY/ETC. NAME],
I am reaching out to you today as a concerned patron of this establishment. I recently became aware that an initiative called, [PROGRAM NAME] is scheduled to take place at the [SCHOOL/LIBRARY/ETC. NAME] for the month of [MONTH]. This program involves live animals being on display, who will come [MONTH] be sent back to a farm where they will either be disposed of (typically through suffocation or being ground up to death while still alive) because they are male and considered useless by the industry, sold to live poultry markets, adopted out to individuals who do not have the means or knowledge to properly care for them, leading them to inevitably be abandoned, all just adding to a cycle of senseless violence, displacement and premature death.
These chicks are sentient beings who require a lifetime of care and commitment. Instead of teaching good values, these incubation and hatching projects teach children that animals are a commodity, and a disposable one at that. It encourages children to bring more baby animals into this world, like litters of kittens and puppies that nobody wants after the “miracle of birth” and initial cuteness factor has worn off. Schools and libraries should be teaching a better set of values to the children that walk through their doors.
There are far better ways to teach children about the cycle of life, and as an educational institution, you are more than capable of teaching these lessons without involving actual animals. Please use your influence and authority to end these cruel, unnecessary practices. The chicks and the children deserve better, and as an academic establishment you can do better.
From educational egg replicas, detailed photographic stories, virtual incubators, video clips of chick embryo development, and field trips to local animal sanctuaries, there are plenty of other ways to teach children about eggs, hatchlings and chickens.
Here are links to various humane ways to teach this to kids that do not involve live animals, and other crucial factors to consider when deciding to organize these sorts of programs.

The above humane alternatives will not only accomplish teaching kids about the amazing life cycle of these birds, but inspire them to appreciate and respect the lives of other living beings.
Thank you for your time and consideration of this important issue that should be addressed and rectified.
SHELL- Bumpy and grainy in texture, an eggshell is covered with as many as 17,000 tiny pores. Eggshell is made almost entirely of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) crystals. It is a semipermeable membrane, which means that air and moisture can pass through its pores. The shell also has a thin outermost coating called the bloom or cuticle that helps keep out bacteria and dust.
INNER AND OUTER MEMBRANES- Lying between the eggshell and egg white, these two transparent protein membranes provide efficient defense against bacterial invasion. If you give these layers a tug, you’ll find they’re surprisingly strong. They’re made partly of keratin, a protein that’s also in human hair.
AIR CELL- An air space forms when the contents of the egg cool and contract after the egg is laid. The air cell usually rests between the outer and inner membranes at the egg’s larger end, and it accounts for the crater you often see at the end of a hard-cooked egg. The air cell grows larger as an egg ages.
ALBUMEN- The egg white is known as the albumen, which comes from albus, the Latin word for “white.” Four alternating layers of thick and thin albumen contain approximately 40 different proteins, the main components of the egg white in addition to water.
CHALAZAE- Opaque ropes of egg white, the chalazae hold the yolk in the center of the egg. Like little anchors, they attach the yolk’s casing to the membrane lining the eggshell. The more prominent they are, the fresher the egg.
VITELLINE MEMBRANE- The clear casing that encloses the yolk.
YOLK- The yolk contains less water and more protein than the white, some fat, and most of the vitamins and minerals of the egg. These include iron, vitamin A, vitamin D, phosphorus, calcium, thiamine, and riboflavin. The yolk is also a source of lecithin, an effective emulsifier. Yolk color ranges from just a hint of yellow to a magnificent deep orange, according to the feed and breed of the hen.
