I love signs painted with gold leaf, outlined in black. They are so classy. This sketch is a detail of the reference photo (taken in 1989) for this series. Luthier (Sam) Rosenthal passed away in 1968, so the shop that bore his name must have been passed down to new owners. I don’t know if his shop still exists, but a search on the internet reveals that some of his violins remain in…

♪ day 1 ♪
so it begins! since this is only a week course we started off with some things done for us - i requested my mould blocks glued on, and my scroll block sawn out in advance. we began by carving out the corner blocks to fit the inner of the c-curve of the violin - first with a knife and mallet, then with gouges. the curve was rasped to get a nice smooth finish, and that was that!
we then moved on to planing the ribs, which took me a while to get the hang of. i started off using way too much pressure, which made it very difficult to get a smooth surface. it also caused me a lot of discomfort (my left thumb is still totally numb from where the pressure of the planer was hitting a nerve in my hand), but eventually i figured out that less is more and had a much easier time! initially we planed one side of each rib to a smooth finish, then flipped them over and planed the other side to a uniform thickness. by using a calliper gauge and writing the thicknesses directly on the ribs, you could see exactly which areas needed to be thinned out to get the perfect thickness of 1.0-1.2mm. i then got to cut each of my ribs to length and plane the edges smooth.
and that’s it for day one! i can’t wait to keep going tomorrow - i think we’ll be shaping and gluing the ribs, as well as starting on carving our scrolls. super excited!

I thought you, were building instruments as your main job, not singing opera! That's awesome!
oh my gosh building instruments would be such an incredible job though!! my dad is a woodworker and he was researching how to build a ukulele for me and it was very intricate

I don’t remember the name of the street where I took the picture on which this sketch is based, but it might have been Madison or Lexington, near Grand Central. I like the tilt of the street and the horizontal-ness of the storefronts.

I’ve also been working on a Symphonic DnB release, this is just the instrumental and some video experimentation.
