Quote
...a Chinese lounging suit of jade-colored brocaded silk. It was before the day of pajamas for women, and certain the things were modest enough; a full high-necked coat and a pair of wide trousers..... Leighton... stared at her as though he were seeing her for the first time in months.
These pajamas provoke interest in a man who is not Elinor Norton’s husband in Mary Roberts Rinehart novel The State v. Elinor Norton from 1933. These garments arrive courtesy of Elinor’s wealthy cousins while she was living a hard life out west on a ranch that her husband and Leighton were trying to work. Although Elinor wears pants, thus setting herself apart from the other ranch wives in the story, this lounging suit, so luxurious and exotic, is an even further step from the everyday wear of women. They were considered a bit daring at a time when few women wore pants for anything but dirty work, and most not even then. So even if they were indeed modest in the flesh they exposed, they drew attention.
This novel is the story of the trial of Elinor Norton. RInehart was novelist best known for her books from the early 20th Century which ranged from comedy  to mystery. This one was turned into a film with Claire Trevor in 1934 called Elinor Norton.

I truly lost my mind when I saw this tag in these gorgeous vintage (antique?) men’s pajamas. The address, 1210 F Street NW Washington, DC was (I immediately recognized) about half a block from my dad’s office building for all the years I grew up.
P.T. Hall turns out to only have inhabited the building from 1906 to 1915, so that neatly dates these pajamas to an amazingly specific window. The photo on the right shows what the building looked like in the 1920s— P.T. Hall was in the building on the far right, by that time the store Erlebacher’s. Today (and in my conscious lifetime) the block is directly over the metro stop Metro Center and is a big pink marble building in a much more modern style than those shown above.

Sleep is one of the fundamental things we need to survive as humans, and so of course, it has been adequately represented in the Barbie line.
In a manner of speaking.
Tumblr media
The first foray into this did not age particularly well. Why yes, I am talking again about 1965's Slumber Party set, aka the "Don't Eat" diet book.
But Mattel was not to be dissuaded from representing such a fundamental part of the human experience (sleep) and the teen experience specifically (slumber parties and sleepovers). Subsequent releases have included things such as 1993's Bedtime Barbie.
Tumblr media
She was the first Barbie to have the soft, cuddleable body to take Barbie to bed with you, then reused in 1994's Slumber Party Barbie, who also came in a tote bag to be dragged along to real life slumber parties.
Tumblr media
Other examples include 1999's Pajama Fun Barbie.
Tumblr media
Who came with, of all things, a Magic 8 Ball. (Sorry, sorry. A Magic Date Ball.)
More modern releases have come in the form of the Cutie Reveals set and Barbie Rewind, both of which had a slumber party themed release.

This Barbie has cute pyjamas and a TV with an inbuilt VCR!

And for the Cutie Reveals, I really must say this one does deliver the absolute most on coziness.

So goodnight and sleep tight, Barbie!
