I got this necklace today at a vintage market!!
The man selling it said it was two girls gossiping.
I think it’s two women in love. The woman on the left has her arm around the woman on the right and she’s giving her a flower, and the woman on the right has her hand on the other’s knee!! Definitely sapphic vibes💗
After some research I found that the artist is the famous French painter, Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806). This piece is of two people in love, and what looks like a skirt on the left is possibly a blanket. However I couldn’t find anything online that described what Fragonard’s intentions for this painting were, or anything that specified the genders of the people in the painting.
The piece is called “Courting Couple.” The back is a pin and it looks like someone added the loop later to make it into a necklace.
I still like to see it as two women in love. Maybe one is dressed as a man to keep it a secret. Such a cool find!
