"Welcome to Catherine's room."
"Hello! I'm Catherine! I play the role of an enemy in Super Mario Bros. USA. I was very popular in the West. I hope my friends in Japan enjoy it too!"
"It's outt~!"
This is a Japanese commercial for Super Mario Bros. 2. It features Birdo and I've been completely obsessed with it for years now. I absolutely adore both Birdo and puppets/stop motion as a medium, so naturally this was a big hit with me.
It's my favourite depiction of the character, although unfortunately I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't super respectful to Birdo's identity. Sorry if that's the case. It's a product of it's time I suppose.
I wish they could bring this Birdo back someday, although I don't think Nintendo could show her smoking nowadays. I just love how confident and feminine she is here. Surely they could make her a mob boss in a future game or something.
