For a linguist it is hard not to be fascinated by the Russian that is (or was) spoken in Odessa, the language reflected, for example, in such stories by Isaak Babel as 'Kak eto delalos' v Odesse' (How it was done [or: How things were done] in Odessa) […]
Some statistics from a little over a hundred years ago (from the census of 1897) show what Odessa traditionally looked like in linguistic terms. In response to a question about native language, almost 51 percent of respondents listed Russian, nearly 33 percent Yiddish, and fewer than 6 percent Ukrainian. Of course Odessa Russian- then and now- is not exactly the same as Moscow or St. Petersburg Russian. In the English words […] 'In Odessa people use their own language to communicate […] It is almost the same as Russian. I'd even say most of the time it is the same as Russian, but sometimes it is not' […]
The distinctiveness of Odessa Russian is nothing new. In an 1895 collection of essays and sketches about the city, the journalist Vlas Doroshevich devoted a chapter to the language of Odessa, which he described as 'Not even a language, but a language salad' (vinegret iziazyka). Doroshevich described over a dozen distinctive features of Odessa Russian, some of which, such as the use of monsieur and madame as general forms of address, seem to have disappeared, although perhaps not entirely.
From Robert Rothstein in “How It Was Sung in Odessa: At the Intersection of Russian and Yiddish Folk Culture” in the Slavic Review Volume 60, Issue 4 (Winter 2001); Cambridge University Press (My Ko-Fi Here)
