My AO3 Wrapped 2023

Welcome to my AO3 Wrapped 2023, where I take a look at some of my favourite fics from 2023 (one bookmark per month).

There were so many amazing fics in 2023, so many new people and friends I met because of fanfic <3 So here’s to a very good 2024, full of words and worlds!

Let’s go to the fics:

January-

The Fine Line Between Hormones and Home by seekingmoonscapes (Bad Buddy: The Series)

In an almost canon universe where the only difference is that it is omegaverse, Pat is an omega, and Pran is an alpha. And during one of his heats, Pat is at home, and decides to ask Pran for a shirt with his scent to help with his heat. But instead, he asks Pran for help in other ways. Fic where the porn IS the plot, everything is super consensual, and sexy and hot. Alternating POV, so on Pran’s pov we get to see all the pining.

February -

If Never Again, If Every Day by gallifreyburning and takiki16 (The Old Guard)

This fic was wonderful from beginning to end. For reasons, 2021 Nicky goes back in time to Jerusalem and his first death at Yusuf's hands. Meanwhile, 1099 Nicolò goes forward in time to 2021 and meets Joe. It's heartbreaking and loving and funny and so full of love. Nicky and Joe miss each other even when around their younger versions. But the love they feel for each other is stronger than that. Wonderful story, happy ending.

March -

Wooing the Water Tribe by lenaballena (ATLA) @dameferre

Sokka has been living in the Fire Nation as Zuko's second in power and his best friend and everything. When Katara comes to visit, Sokka thinks Zuku is courting her. And he realizes he is also in love with his best friend. Lots of pining. There's absolutely no courting of Katara. It's also really funny. My heart broke for Sokka at some moments.

April -

The Grand Unified Theory of Shen Qingqiu by 00janeblonde (SVSSS)

WIP - This story is all fluff and no angst, like the tags say, slice of life and it's wonderful. SQQ dies at Maigu Ridge, and is offered to acquire the Game Plus, where he can go back to the past with his cultivation and memory intact, and try again. Doing that he discovers that he is actually the real Shen Jiu reincarnated, and he can try to recover memory markers to be able to restart the "game" even before than when he first "transmigrated". His friendship with YQY becomes strong, LQG also becomes his friend (it's really sweet how he wants his friends back). Everything is very soft. Absolutely great teacher SQQ.

May -

but for me, there is a storm by Authoress (Haikyuu!!) by @kiribakus

An epic pacific rim au. Hinata and Kageyama are both cadets who want to be Jaeger pilots, but they cannot get along. So they work really hard because they are their last hope to pilot a one of a kind Jaeger - a Kaiju/Machine hybrid. They solve their problems in the beginning (and then later they have more problems). Hinata and Kageyama are not the only main characters, other characters are also very important and have their own storyline and pov. This story is heartbreaking as well. There's MCD, and it made me cry so hard I got puffy eyes. It's a wonderful read, and very well written.

June -

The UA Analyst Kid by RogueVector (BNHA)

Izuku meets the UA teachers before getting OFA and they see how good his analysis is, so they start to train him (together with some other heroes). But some things don't change and Izuku still meets All Might and gets offered OFA. This story is funny, sweet and with amazing relationships. Izuku is OP with his intelligence and training. All the teachers and heroes are so supportive and good. A really feel good story.

July -

Deku? I think he’s some pro… by Clouds (BNHA)

After All Might told Izuku he can't be a hero, he finds himself in a forum used by some underground heroes and offers his analysis to them, since he can't be a hero, he will help them. The underground heroes think Izuku is some kind of retired pro when they ask for help analyzing some villains and all, and when they finally meet face-to-face they all decide to practically adopt Izuku and teach him to fight so he will have a chance to be a quirkless hero. It is amazing! Also, the relationship between Izuku and the underground heroes is more like friends than teacher-student, and it's amazing that way. (some All Might bashing - be warned)

August -

Mobius by Foxquills (BNHA) @fox-quills

WIP - I love this story so much!!! Third-year Izuku is sent to the past because of a quirk accident, to the time both Shouta and Hizashi are third year students at UA. Problem is, according to Nedzu, time is constant, or a loop, so he can’t change anything in the past, and everything that has happened, will happen again. He becomes fast friends with both Shouta and Hizashi, and starts crushing on them as well. Both Hizashi and Shouta also start crushing on him. It is lovely. There’s pain. It’s awesome. (also omegaverse).

September -

Factory Settings by Anonymous (Good Omens)

Post season 2 au, because Crowley follows Aziraphale to heaven. Things happen, and instead of Crowley, there is Raphael, without any memory of all the time he's lived as Crowley. Heaven and Hell are at it again. Aziraphale has no idea what to do, and he misses his Crowley. Muriel is a sweetheart. Both Aziraphale and Crowley/Raphael povs. Great story, feels very much canon.

October -

Justice in Defiance by Foxquills (BNHA) @fox-quills

WIP - Aizawa is a hero turned villain who kills both heroes and villains alike. And one day Izuku finds him right after he kills someone. They fight. And now Izuku needs to know more. What made Aizawa turn????? To do that, he will also need Hizashi in his corner. Absolutely lovely story!!!! The povs are amazing. The feelings and pining are perfect.

November -

If I Must Starve (Let it be in Your Arms) by Igneum807 (The Witcher)

So think about the softest story involving Jaskier and touch-starved witchers, and this is the result. During his travels alone, when he and Geralt go their different ways for a few weeks, Jaskier meets Geralt's brothers, who are just as touch and companionship-starved as Geralt was before meeting Jaskier. It's super soft and tender.

December -

Cultivate: Slow Life on a Monster-Infested Mountain by NeonGhostCat (SVSSS) @neonghostcat

When SY transmigrates, the System tries to put him on SQQ's body, but SQQ is aware and is able to stop it from happening. The System then gives SY his own body, but something goes wrong with the system and SY is decided to not get involved with the plot, or with Cang Qiong Sect, and specially SQQ. He finds an abandoned mountain, with an abandoned house there and decides to stay there until he is strong enough if SQQ finds him and wants to kill him. Obviously things cannot be that simple. Now he is stuck on the mountain he can't get out of, every full moon night there are monster attacks and one day LQG appears on the Mountain, how can he get out of helping with the plot now? Shen Yuan is absolutely perfect on this fic. I love how he deals with the mountain and its beasts and plant-life. Liushen is the softest you'll see. Slow burn, super domestic, feel good story.

SO (29 month gap -> Removing 2020 to account for Covid, 17 months):

(SO also had to deal with the Netflix deal, which combined with Covid could point to why it was a 3 year gap rather than the usual year or so)

We are currently at the 15 month mark since SO finished airing. Jojo World already did an event in NYC in 2023, so if you’re going for population, why not go there again instead of picking a NJ suburb…? I’m sorry but Cali and New Jersey seems a little specific - you know, the place where the race starts and where the main villain is defeated respectively…

All I’m saying is,, it’s not impossible

Williams controversially only spoke in Polari during the entire film leaving some audience members baffled and confused. Subtitles were suggested for some theatres, (especially those located outside of large metropolitan areas), but this proved difficult as Polari was fairly obscure even in the 1960s, (although it had come into more common consciousness through some radio broadcasts). Finally, a small company called “Bona Lingo” was hired from a little shop in Soho, London, which was able to provide the translations. The following is a sample of Williams announcing his plans for universal domination:

“As Emperor Omipalone, the villainous nanti-bona emperor of the cosmos, I've nattered to me palones and omies about me bijou plan to troll over the universe, naffing it up as I go. Vardering me lacoddy, all zhooshed up, and me basket well-crammed, I cackle to them, "Varder at me, omies and palones, we'll dish the dirt on all the other planets, scarpering their bijou dreams and turning them into a meshigener mess. We'll screech our Polari lingo from the zhooshy stars to the naffest corners, leaving chaos in our wake. Let's charper the universe together and make it bow before our wickedly fantabulosa reign!"”

so... i need to know more about the House of Torture. any idea where to start?

I think the best thing I can do is run down the origins and history of the group, and link to some shows on NJPW world if you want to check them out for more information. Then I'll try to sum up their general vibe, and why Jack Perry fits into their faction.

House of Torture got its start as a part of Bullet Club, back in 2020. I think technically they're still a subgroup of Bullet Club, but the two factions don't have much to do with one another these days.

The thing about New Japan in 2020 is that the pandemic really screwed up their schedule, and the international travel restrictions left a lot of their non-Japanese roster stuck outside the country. Bullet Club was especially hit hard, since it's generally been an "evil foreigner" group. So New Japan needed to make a new star and also prop up Bullet Club with some new, domestic members.

First, EVIL turned on Los Ingobernables de Japon. He won the New Japan Cup with help from Bullet Club's Gedo (July 11, 2020). Then he beat LIJ's leader, Tetsuya Naito, at Dominion (July 12) to win the IWGP heavyweight and intercontinental titles. Bullet Club never played fair, but there was absolutely no subtlety about Evil's heel act. That title win featured a ton of run-ins, low-blows, you name it. Dick Togo, a 50-something legend from the Japanese indies, debuted to join the group as Evil's personal henchman.

Yujiro Takahashi quickly became associated with Evil and Togo, simply because there weren't a lot of other Bullet Club guys left in the country to team with. Yujiro joined Bullet Club way back in 2014, and the pimp gimmick he developed back then hasn't changed much over the years. The most notable thing about him is that he saunters to the ring with a professional go-go dancer named Pieter, but unfortunately she hasn't been brought in much since the pandemic.

Evil's big title reign didn't last long, and pundits generally considered it a failure. He only managed to get one successful title defense, against his former LIJ buddy Hiromu Takahashi at Sengoku Lord (July 25, 2020). After that, Naito won back his two belts at Summer Struggle (August 29). Evil went back down to the midcard.

The final piece of the puzzle came a year later, after SHO turned on his tag team partner YOH. They had a grudge match at Wrestle Grand Slam (September 4, 2021). Right after the match, Evil, Dick Togo, and Yujiro came to the ring wearing "House of Torture" shirts, and gave one to him. From that point on, the four men were clearly distinct from Bullet Club, even if they never officially broke away.

The defining feature of House of Torture is that they have absolutely no redeeming virtues. The rest of Bullet Club cheats and takes cheap shots, but they tend to be kind of cool and sometimes they've got a good sense of humor. House of Torture doesn't want to entertain you. They don't even want to be entertaining villains. Sometimes I think they care more about frustrating the fans than they do about winning matches. Hence the name: We're the ones being tortured.

If I had to recommend a specific storyline to understand House of Torture, I guess I'd go with their feud with Just 5 Guys in the 2023 Destruction tour. J5G had a 5-to-4 advantage against the heels, but that still could keep them from pulling their bullshit heel tactics, because on September 24 House of Torture just convinced Yoshinobu Kanemaru to switch sides! Every time the good guys think they've got a fair playing field, Evil finds a new way to skew it.

A major criticism of House of Torture has been Sho's performance. Sho is genuinely a great wrestler, but ever since he turned heel he's become this craven psycho whose best move is to hit a guy with a wrench. Half of Sho's matches these days involve trying to get out of the match, by faking an injury or claiming his opponent forfeited when he's really tied up backstage. On the other hand, Sho's on-screen personality as a babyface was pretty bland, so I can't deny that being in House of Torture has helped his character development. I'm hoping that also benefits Ren Narita (who joined in December 2023).

Jack Perry should fit right in with House of Torture. His feud with HOOK last year was textbook cheap-heat heel work. If Hook had been feuding with Evil or Sho, I think they would've pulled a lot of the same shenanigans. The whole "scapegoat" thing fits in well too, and not just because the goat-head thing is spooky-looking. Jack has gone from not caring about the fans to feeding off of their scorn and ruining matches for the sake of spite. I don't even personally blame him for what happened with CM Punk, but his character wants me to resent him for it so he can revel in that hatred. That's the kind of attitude Evil, Sho, Ren Narita, Dick Togo, Yujiro Takahashi, and Yoshinobu Kanemaru can relate to.

"Aziraphale bustles back into his shop with all of the energy of a raccoon holding a goodie they never expected to stumble across." – no skin like the skin you woke up in (gomens canon divergence au)

"Ed has spent the vast majority of his life as a pirate. Get as old and experienced as he’s gotten – far older and more experienced than he ever expected, mind you – and you form some opinions, about salt and the sea and the way of things." – and i feel so proud when the reckoning arrives (this is two lines so it's cheating but whatever 💚. very dumb black sails/our flag means death crossover)

"The first time Dick notices himself call for Batgirl and the wrong sibling respond, he doesn't think much of it." – no difference between the past and the ground (dick grayson thinks he's going crazy until he realizes [REDACTED])

"Tommy thinks that finding himself stuck through the Blood God’s sword – stuck through – should come as more of a shock to him than it does." – this is mostly what happens in dallas (au of my dsmp hero/villain major character death series where the major character death doesn't happen but it's still not great! hence the wtnv if he had lived title)

"Wilbur drops onto the couch with a groan and some sort of weird, histrion-type flail." – a gaze blank and pitiless as the sun (dsmp hero/villain au, companion piece to the actual mcd, probably my best piece of posted writing)

"He isn't looking for trouble today, but he isn't surprised when the blade of a sword finds him regardless." – the truth is like a sickle (it'll cut you to the middle) (dsmp hero/villain au with the mcd)

"The flickering lights of the tavern seem soft, in the late hours of the night." – drunk in a field (on dandelion wine) (unfinished 5+1 from a folk witch!jaskier universe that i got super super attached to but eventually let go of because my life kept getting more insane and the concept more intricate)

"Peter had spent a lot of time trying to psychoanalyze Neal Caffrey before his capture." – acquainted with the saint of never getting it right (white collar/batfam crossover, dick grayson is neal caffrey, my most popular fic by a chunk)

"Geralt can already tell that Jaskier plans on dragging them both out tonight, probably with quilt, to force him into a night of 'stargazing and communing with nature like we used to!'" – it could feel like an end (to have to keep going) (immortal/modern times geraskier au fic i haven't read since i wrote and posted it in a day. i think it's contemplations on mortality, helplessness, and the climate crisis?)

"Briefly, he contemplates sitting up on the couch to give himself better lung capacity for his incoming tirade, but figures that he may as well put his vigilante training to good use, and continues to lay back." – more like me (less like you) (technically the second line of an emotional conversation between dick and jason, but the first line was dialogue and it is too early for me to mess with quotation marks like that)

so, full disclaimer that i don't post a ton (no skin was last updated in august of last year and more like me was posted in july of 2021) so a lot of this writing is kind of old, but! i did notice that i've tended to open in media res, but recently i have been incorporating more exposition. i've never tried to make my first lines great hooks — i'm honestly more concerned with giving myself a good jumping-off point than anything else. it also struck me how many fandoms i've written for that i no longer engage with, basically at all. maybe i've just been really focused lately, but i don't think a few of these fandoms would hold my attention anymore! ironically, i'm talking about the more recent fandoms like dsmp/gomens/ofmd and not the older stuff like the batfam or the witcher.

this was really fun, i loved looking back through my work like this!! thank you again ful-crum for tagging me :)! i'm gonna tag @doingthewritethings, @b10000p, and @alavenderleaf !!!!!!

Fic Writer Wrapped- 2023 Edition

I did this in 2022 and 2021, and am revving it back up for my own personal interest in tracking these things. Tagging anyone reading this if you want to participate!

Like in previous years, this is about fic published on ao3 in 2023 (not amount of words written in 2023, which I don't keep track of).

How many stories did you complete?

I completed one longfic (more than 100k words), eight medium fics (between 15k and 100k), and forty-two short fics (under 15k). Just like last year, I continue to have considerable lag between writing and publishing. The longfic and some of the medium fics were mostly written in 2022, but published and finished this year.

What is your total word count for the year?

547,416 words

What fandoms did you write in this year?

I really committed to the multi-fandom bit. I also discovered an addiction to cdramas. I wrote in Harry Potter, Tolkien, The Grisha Trilogy, Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen, Emma - Jane Austen, Twilight, the Locked Tomb, House of the Dragon, 陈情令 The Untamed, 山河令 Word of Honor, 苍兰诀 Love Between Fairy and Devil, 莲花楼 Mysterious Lotus Casebook, 无量 Wúliàng, and 长月烬明 Till the End of the Moon.

Did you write more, less, or roughly about what you expected?

This year's published word count borrows from many projects that were written in 2022, probably about 150k words' worth. Even subtracting that, I wrote a lot more than I expected. Because I didn't write a long fic this year (123k of Rainbow of Chaos's total of 130k words was written in 2022), I felt like I was unproductive compared to previous years. But I actually I wrote a lot!

What’s your favorite story of the year?

To catch a fox (Grisha verse, the Darkling/Nikolai). I had a blast writing this, it felt like it wrote itself, and I think the fic is so much fun, I still enjoy re-reading it, and I'm really happy about how many other people liked it as well!

What is your most underappreciated story of the year?

This question gets harder and harder to answer every year, because the more deliberately niche I write the happier I am when I get a single comment and feel that is more than sufficient appreciation. I guess if I had to pick one, it's my Aredhel/Celegorm fic, because imo this ship deserves to be more popular than it is!

Biggest fanfic-related disappointment of 2023?

I was riding the high of discovering the Darkling/Nikolai ship after watching the TV show Shadow and Bone in March. A good friend left a prompt that I loved, in an event called Fandom Orienteer, which had a several-month-long writing period and then a posting window in August. I bit off more than I could chew when I started writing Palace in the Dark, found my ideas too plotty, and did not finish in time to post a completed story in August. By the time I actually finished over Thanksgiving, not only did I miss being part of the event, I had lost almost all my WIP readers (except my friends from the darkolai server, shout out to you, you are the best!). It's fine, the fic is finished and complete on my profile, and readers will slowly find it. But I was disappointed in not being able to finish in July for the event and when the momentum from the show was hotter.

Biggest fanfic-related surprise of 2023?

I'm surprised by how many multi-fandom exchanges I did. I was only dipping my toe into them in 2022 and was not sure the whole thing really suited me. I wrote almost forty exchange fics this year, and got some amazing gift fics in exchange, and it's been really fun.

Something you look forward to working on in 2024?

I think I'll work on more villain-centric fic for MDZS, and also hopefully write more new-to-me fandoms for exchanges.

The Villainous Timeline (Part 1): Flug & Miss Heed

Made this theory to calculate, breakdown and understand the Villainous Timeline. (I will be making 2 or 3 parts as ran out of space for photos.😅)

Part 2: Demencia and 5.0.5.

Part 3: SunBlast and Miss Heed

Alan mentioned on Instagram that:

"The Villainous timeline so far followed real life (as shown on Miss Heed and Penumbra's Instagram) but when the show airs, it’ll slow down and follow its own timeline as they wait for more episodes to release, but it’ll be similar to ours. As we know, all actual real events happened in Villainous and BH even had some influence over them, so I’m sure they’ll still follow ours but at a different pace."

So 3 points to note:

The Villainous Timeline Follows our Time line but at a different pace.

The timeline slows down when the show airs.

BH has some influence over real events happening.

This is confirmed here as when the show airs in 2021, in Episode 4, the date here (in red) is shown as 14 Jul 2021.

So Given the Ages and Timeline:

Flug is 26 yrs old in Aug 2019

So in Aug 2022 Flug is 29 yrs old. (until Aug 2023, when he becomes 30 yrs old)

Flug's Journal and Demecia's Diary came out on 21st Feb 2022

Flug said in his book “I have been working as the chief scientist of the Black Hat Organization for approximately 8-10 years.” [Google Translate]

Flug's P.E.A.C.E. files mentioned he has been working in Black Hat Organization since March 10, 2011.

21st Feb 2022 - 10 Mar 2011 = 10 years 11 months, 11 days.

So, Flug has been working in BlackHat Org years for 10 years (11 months, 11 days) - (Note: round up to 11 yrs for easier calculation)

29 yrs old - 11 years = 18 yrs old.

Based on the year in the photo of Flug’s Thesis in Episode 6, we can conclude that Flug's thesis started out and was finished on the Year 2005. If it was longer there would be a time range. (e.g. 2005 - 2006)

2022 - 2005 = 17 years

29 yrs - 17 years = 12 yrs old

If they follow Mexico School System, Black Hat Institution should either start in early July or late Aug.

So Flug started going to school either in Jul/Aug 2005

So Flug was 12 years old when he met Miss Heed and started going to Black Hat Institution. (So they started at middle school age)

This was probably the class photo taken on the 1st day of school.

It's shown he was celebrating Halloween so this picture should take place on the 31st Oct, so they've known each other around 2-3 months at this time.

According to this article, It takes around 2-6 months to write a thesis

So maybe Flug has to submit his thesis at the end of the year in Dec 2005 before Christmas, as there were no Christmas decorations (I think even if BlackHat hates Christmas, the Villains would probably celebrate Christmas in their own evil way)

So, Flug and Miss Heed knew each other for about 4-5 months.

According to Miss Heed's P.E.A.C.E. Files, she was 17 yrs old while the experiments were being conducted.

17 yrs old - 12 yrs old = 5 years.

So does that mean that Miss Heed was experimented on at P.E.A.C.E. when she was 12 years old, for 5 years before she got her powers at the age of 17 yrs old? (Unless something happened between the 5 yr gap.)

Also, According to her P.E.A.C.E. Files, she needed to train her powers, which might take a few months or immediately.

So this picture with Flug staring at the TV looking at Miss Heed, might be when he is 17 - 18 yrs old before he joined Black Hat Organization.

Conclusion:

-> Flug has been working in BHO for 10 yrs 11 months, 11 days, since he was 18 yrs old.

-> Flug and Miss Heed were 12 yrs old when they met each other for about 4-5 months.

Flip City Timeline:

For a while I've been trying to reboot the Flip City AU storyline. In my previous attempts to simplify it, I only made it more complicated, so it went through a few iterations before I could get it right. Now here is my (hopefully) definitive version of the timeline I'd like to share with you:

1990 Sometime after the events of Ghostbusters 2, most of the psychomagnitheric slime under New York was flowing with positive energy, but all the "bad vibes" had to go somewhere... The remaining negative energy sunk deep into the earth and created an interdimensional rift. From this rift, a pocket dimension that mirrored the world above was created.

1993 (July) A few people went missing. At first it didn't seem like a supernatural occurrence, better to let the police handle it. Then more people went missing, and the disappearances all seemed connected to the same phenomena: a swirling green vortex. The Ghostbusters were called to investigate. What they found was a portal to another world where they had to confront twisted versions of themselves to save the innocent people who'd fallen in. Attempts to reason with the so-called "Peoplebusters" were futile, as their doppelgängers were convinced they were heroes doing the right thing. The Ghostbusters had no choice but to escape and seal the portal to the "Flip City" behind them. (Essentially the plot of the original cartoon episode, but Winston and Flip! Winston would be more involved.)

1993 (August) The rescue mission was a success, but the victims suffered amnesia from their time in the Peoplebusters containment unit. People had a hard time believing the story and the families of the victims didn't want the publicity. This did not help the Ghostbusters reputation. Ghost activity went down at this point and it started to feel as if they'd been "too good" at their job. Meanwhile, the Flip Side became closed off from the mortal world. Without captive humans to chase after, the Peoplebusters fell out of business.

2021 (June) After Gozer was finally defeated in Summerville, a power vacuum was left wide open. Now spectral rifts appear everywhere and ghost activity rises. The Ghostbusters are back in business, but so are their counterparts. After 28 years of inactivity*, the Peoplebusters return to their grim work. Harvesting humans proves to be difficult now that they've become old and stiff, so Flip Egon decides to acquire some more help. After spying on Egon's grandchildren, he is inspired to create some grandkids of his own in the lab. Tremor and Phobia are born. Silent Film and Thirteen join shortly after.

2022 This is the point where my "Afterlife the series" AU starts. The Peoplebusters would be recurring villains who show up to cause trouble. Despite being equally matched, the Ghostbusters always thwart their evil schemes. Repeated failures cause some friction between Phobia and her grandfather, but their relationship gradually improves over the course of the show. My fanfiction "seeing Double" serves as the Peoplebusters introduction. My friend April's fanfic "Replacement" is a much longer story recounting Phobia's attempt to infiltrate the Ghostbusters, and later forming an alliance with them to defeat an enemy that threatens both their worlds.

2024-Onward After the events of Frozen Empire, the Peoplebusters decide to focus their efforts on helping their fellow ghosts cross over and only hunting dangerous humans. They change their name to the "Ghost Guard".

*Note: In Afterlife, Mr. Grooberson says there hasn't been a ghost sighting in 30 years. This is not accurate, but the Peoplebusters were not known to the general public.

I want to look back at this, because I think it’s Extremely relevant in what just happened between wilbur and fundy (with wilbur seeing himself in fundy, not just because of his downspiral and isolation but in that sense of abandonment in his time of need, and the pure tragedy of their experiences being directly related to each other)

not just because it reaches into the wider pathos of the entirety of l’manberg and the very core of a struggle an entire community has been working through in a way that has been at once universal and completely silent (both in the sense that people who are struggling from a loss of a bond with Each Other remain isolated despite all wanting what they used to have, And in the sense that it’s been largely painted over and ignored by people on the outside. whether that be other members of the server or the fanbase), which when addressed head on will rip the veil away from that struggle and present it honestly and earnestly and in a way that can’t be ignored anymore

but it Also goes a long way to explain the weirdness of tommy’s role in the latter half of wilbur’s arc.

because it’s not just that wilbur put such a heavy emphasis on tommy’s importance and presence in his life only to pull away (which is something that could be and arguably Has Been explained), but because tommy has consistently Been A Presence in wilbur’s life anyways. and not in that tommy is trying to force his way in, but that he’s been kept at arms length but No Farther Away.

he’s a near Consistent presence, and has been set up both in canon and meta-textually as an extremely important next step for wilbur (and probably an end for this arc as a whole) while still being Intentionally Pushed Out Of all of the major steps that wilbur is trying to take right now.

which again, wouldn’t be strange in concept (there’s no reason why tommy would need to be there when wilbur was confronting tubbo or fundy, he has relationships with those people outside of tommy that can and should be addressed on their own), but that becomes Really Apparent not just in how these seeds are being laid throughout wilbur’s streams but also in the storybeats where tommy Is There.

tommy’s presence in hitting on 16 wasn’t necessary to the Plot contained within the story, but Very Carefully laid out that tommy Is with wilbur, that he Stayed with wilbur, and that wilbur very much so wants him to be there with him. we can see how tommy is clumsily trying to reach out to wilbur while wilbur simultaneously pushes him away and desperately clings to him in a, frankly, really compelling portrayal of their relationship at the time.

and this is interesting, because tommy has no idea that the events of the story even happened. wilbur has framed tommy as one of the most important people to him, someone that he Needs in his life, to the point that he can’t Leave tommy even when he knows (or at least feels) that he needs to pull away from him. and so there’s Both this closeness and this Distance. where tommy is There, but he’s not allowed to Know. he isn’t allowed to be an actual presence in wilbur’s life that’s Able to impact him.

and this continues in the stream with techno. where tommy is There, he’s very Casually and Naturally a part of wilbur’s life, but he isn’t allowed to be Involved.

and this is interesting as well because this, the tubbo stream that followed, and even the fundy stream all have moments that either imply or set up that confrontation or reconciliation between them.

and I think it goes back to this. back to this feeling that wilbur desperately needed help and was abandoned. back to this feeling that his death didn’t Matter to anyone, except for where it could be twisted into a justification for something awful, something that hurt more people and ruined whatever legacy he could’ve had even further (ruined the memory the people important to him had of him even further).

and I consider this twofold:

1: while this feeling of Abandonment is near universal among l’manberg members, tommy more than anyone is poised to really Understand wilbur once they’re at a point where they can be open and honest with each other.

because what it comes down to is that both wilbur and tommy have experienced other people Moving On. tommy’s stay in the afterlife was Much Much shorter than wilbur’s, but his arc following his death was Defined by this disconnect and insecurity. not just in his relationships (which it had a profound impact on his relationship with ranboo and tubbo), but on his place As A Living Person at all.

he still felt dead. he still felt like the world had moved on without him and he didn’t have a place in it anymore.

and for Both of them these insecurities are reinforced and partially stem from trauma that is frankly Shockingly relevant to each other.

Both of them watched their friends, watched l’manberg, move on without them following their exile. Both of them had been convinced (through external and internal means) that everyone they’d loved had been better off without them because They were inherently bad unlovable people. wilbur a villain that causes everything wrong with the world and tommy a selfish destructive child that acts as a leech for everyone that tries to support them.

and this fact crushed them, particularly because of that isolation, because they weren’t suffering where other people were allowed to see or understand. and both of them had these feelings amplified by a build up of trauma and victimization over the course of their arcs that exploded into suicide attempts. but where wilbur’s had been in a moment of intense high pressure with everyone’s eyes on him, pushing him over the edge, tommy had been alone in the aftermath and given the time to come to a realization about the unfairness of his situation and save himself.

tommy was able to recognize, even in some small amount, that he wasn’t the problem while wilbur had been lost in his black and white thinking. and that’s defined the ways their arcs have progressed and the challenges they’ve faced following their choices to get better and to be better.

and it is Both the ways that their experiences are so painfully similar And the ways that they differ that could lead to them having a profound impact on each other as they both struggle to find meaning and worth and meaningful Stable human connections in their lives no matter how hard they try.

2: while their isolation during their trauma was very much so real and incredibly painful, tommy and wilbur had both been there for each other while they were spiraling as much as they could be, and this matters.

they were Also profoundly impacted by the ways that they weren’t able to be there for each other, ways that they feel like they were failed even when those feelings aren’t completely rational, and this also matters.

neither of them have the full context to understand the other’s suffering or why they Would feel abandoned when they feel that they were the one left go of, But This Is A Completely Reasonable Obstacle For Them To Overcome With Honest Communication, and this Also matters.

these are characters who have a profound impact on each other even when they’re separated, Especially when they’re separated, who at the same time are insecure in those relationships and in that necessity.

this is both the inherent problem that has kept their relationship complicated and tense And what’s going to open their relationship up to growth and healing when the time is right.

and a big part of that is going to be understanding each other’s suffering and how that impacted their capacity to connect with and process each other.

logsted is the obvious chekov’s gun. wilbur’s current understanding of dream being juxtaposed by it becoming clearer and clearer that he Doesn’t know anything that dream actually Did while wilbur was gone, given more and more tension as we see wilbur react so Strongly to what he Does know happened.

(his anger at doomsday and how he feels like he was used as a scapegoat for it, him telling tommy that he’d have disemboweled dream for what he did to him despite the fact that he Didn’t know what happened during exile. and how these two things will Intersect when he eventually learns the truth, with wilbur’s death leaving the people that he cared about More vulnerable to dream and how he took advantage of that.)

but I Also think that tommy being Let In, being able to Understand wilbur’s feelings enough to put context behind his actions will be incredibly important for the both of them. because wilbur Desperately wants to be understood and accepted for what he is and tommy Desperately wants that security of being able to Understand, to not be an outsider to his relationships that just has to accept whatever happens at face value.

that’s not to say that I think tommy and wilbur are meant to handle each other’s problems and growth as people Alone, but rather that I fully believe that this shared understanding between each other is something that will be Incredibly good for the both of them, but it has to wait until they’re at a point where they’d be Receptive To It as characters.

tommy didn’t accept that he needed to well and truly Open up to get better until after his death, until he was finally backed into a corner so hard that he realized he Had to get better and that what he was doing before wasn’t working. he recognized that he Needed help and he Needed to reach out and he Needed to open up.

and wilbur is going through that right now. not just in having the stakes slowly raise higher and higher, clearly building up to what’s going to be a blow out. but in him slowly realizing the impact that he truly had on people. realizing that he’s Wanted through the pain that his absence caused. recognizing that isolating himself further is only going to hurt people More because they care about and love him.

he’s going to need that point of contact when he makes that realization, someone who can meet him where he is and Understand him. and I think tommy is poised to be that person for him, just like he’s poised to be that person for Tommy.

Interactive fic moment!

hark, I come to ye bearing self promotion!

My interactive fanfiction is going to be returing in a week!

Everything that's already happened has been cleaned up and made easy to read on Ao3, and I will be providing a summary before also giving a link to where you can participate as chat when it gets going again!

So the parts of the fic that have happened so far are Tommy-centric, and were written between November of 2021 and July 2023; with a couple breaks inbetween.

It follows Tommy, who is a villain with the other members of bench-trio, and what happens / has happened is voted on by "Chat" [ the readers ] in instagram story polls. Along with the polls, chat also occasionally gets to speak in the form of the question sticker where their words get thrown up on a mess with the most obvious vibe dictating what happens next [ ie. violence, 'aw's, just making his brain shut down, ect. ]

There's been alot, and the genuine best summary I can give is;

villain boy has electricity powers, is adopted on sight by a smelly man at the park, now has two families and finds out he is actually a charged creeper

I thought this might be a fun post to make in terms of maybe helping other people who feel like things are moving "slowly", etc.

That first image of text is a cellphone word doc that I typed up on September 30th, 2021. It's title is "Lord Kreditte" - which is the name of the character in the second image! He is a D&D Drow Fighter I had in a one shot, who I thought had a hilarious personality and whose origin as a Drow made me want to put the character in as a kind of Magical Cavern Lord. I completely forgot about writing the document for a while.

In SEPTEMBER 2022, at some point, I started making up a weird alias for a fake 80's Space Barbarian named Goldstar for myself in Animal Crossing sometimes. As you do, haha, but. I decided to actually design him, in the third image here, and I got to thinking about a character I had back when I was making really silly little comics in the late 90s as a kid, just to amuse myself to pull as the foil for him. He has no REAL name on the file layers like Goldstar does, he's just labeled as "Lancer" to remind me that he isn't a VILLAIN, but an opposite.

In late 2022 or VERY early 2023 I rediscovered the original note doc and went "how funny," and by January 3rd I had drawn Liege in a fairly finalized overall design, and Ominous's original design. I dismissed it as "maybe not something I want to pursue in earnest."

The last image is from July, from when I was 10 pages deep into a really fun project I'm still making up silly stuff for. I'm 19 pages in, now, and have only been stopped from going further because of a shoulder injury I'm trying to rest.

I just wanted to talk about this project and its process and (not to use the term too dramatically, but) its evolution a little bit. Every little thing that I've worked on was worth the wait, and nothing is really "sacrificed" if it doesn't make it to the final part. It just gets recycled later.

Tom Hiddleston’s Loki remains one of the most popular characters in Marvel Studios’ cache of heroes and villains, even after more than a decade of service since his debut in 2011’s Thor. Now, after Season 1 of Loki made waves throughout its run on Disney+, it’s already set for a second round of episodes in the near future.

Loki became the first Disney+ show from Marvel Studios to be officially confirmed for a Season 2 in its sixth episode’s post-credits scene, although details are scarce beyond that news. It’s been confirmed that the entire cast will return for the continuation of Loki’s Disney+ story after the Multiverse began falling apart to close out Season 1 in July 2021.

Reports indicated that filming would begin for Season 2 early this month as Hiddleston and the Marvel team prepare to move the God of Mischief forward in his new journey alongside the Time Variance Authority. Now, it appears that this journey has officially begun thanks to a new image from the show’s set.

The God of Mischief Returns for Season 2

Cinematographer Isaac Bauman took to Instagram to share an image seemingly confirming that Season 2 of Marvel Studios' Loki has begun filming for its release on Disney+.

The image shows off his personalized chair from the set in front of a blue screen and some of his equipment, which comes directly from the show's set in London. Bauman also included a text caption that reads "Day 1, Just the beginning...:"

Interestingly, Bauman has since taken the post down from his Instagram page, adding further credence to Loki beginning production.

What Will Loki Season 2 Be About?

Considering how many wild twists and turns Season 1 of Loki took, which even included a kid Variant and an alligator Variant of the leading character, the excitement for Season 2 is palpable.

With this photo confirming that the God of Mischief is back in action, the wait begins to see exactly how his story will expand in the MCU over the next couple of years. Filming should take place over at least the next six months, possibly even into the early part of next year, Moon Knight directing duo Aaron Benson and Justin Morehead are taking over the show and bringing Hiddleston back into the spotlight.

The story for Season 2 is even more of a mystery considering how Jonathan Majors' He Who Remains sent the Multiverse into complete chaos, which was a result of his death at Sylvie's hand in the Citadel at the End of Time. Tom Hiddleston has already teased just how "chaotic" things will be when his anti-hero returns to the forefront, and it will be hard to wait to find out exactly what kind of chaos and calamity will ensue.

Season 2 of Loki is currently filming, and it's release date on Disney+ is still unknown.

Death's Door

In 2023, I've played and completed more games than in any other year so far. I've had many great experiences, and I thought it would be nice to write down my thoughts on at least some of them. This post may contain spoilers.

Developed by Acid Nerve. Published by Devolver Digital. Released in July 2021.

Death's Door is one of the first games I played this year. It was one of the five (5!!!!!) games I received as a gift from my Secret Santa in 2022 (you know who you are!).

The part of this game that really struck me was how it treated death--appropriate, for a game with "death" in its name.

In this game, you play as a soul reaper who is also a cute little crow, and your job is to reap the souls of the people who have lived for too long and who have become corrupted into monsters. But each time you defeat one of these corrupted souls, you are not met with a celebration of your victory. Instead, what you get is a scene much more reminiscent of a funeral. The deceased's friends and family (and enemies too) gather around, and your gravedigger companion delivers a touching eulogy. There is no gloating, there is no disdain. Despite their misdeeds, they are not a villain to be hated and forgotten; at this final step, they are treated with empathy and understanding. This is the element that really makes Death's Door stand out to me.

Moving onto the gameplay: I found each area a joy to explore, with various navigational mini-puzzles and hidden secrets littered throughout. The combat is fast and satisfying. You start out with a sword with a 3-attack combo, plus a bow and arrow; attacking with your melee weapon gives you ammo for your ranged weapon, encouraging you to use both methods of combat. As the game progresses, you unlock a few alternative melee weapons and ranged spells, and I quickly settled on alternating quick dagger attacks with arrows or fireballs. The enemies are varied with different attack and movement styles, and the encounters are often difficult without being unfair. Even dying doesn't feel so bad, the shortcut unlocks help to soften the blow and the DEATH screen is nice to look at.

As for the music. While the entire soundtrack is great--I've listened to the OST probably two dozen times--what really stood out to me was the way the Inner Furnace's moving platforms are synced to the area's music. That's just a treat. they didn't need to do it, but they did, and it makes the entire area feel so good.

What I think I enjoyed the most, though, was the final scavenger hunt of optional puzzles, secrets and challenges. I'm a sucker for these kinds of things, especially when a final reward is hinted at. And the game delivers strongly on that promise, with a cutscene making explicit the links with Acid Nerve's previous title Titan Souls, showing some of the story preceding the events of Death's Door, and if you're prone to wishful thinking, hinting at a potential follow-up game. Overall, a very satisfying 100% ending to a wonderful game.
