Since 2004, the Graphic Design department at Estonian Academy of Arts has organised collective study trips to Brno Biennial. This pocket book offers a unique and original view of the city and – through the memories and recollections of graphic design students throughout the years – gives an entertaining overview of local food, nightlife, accomodation, activities, etc.

Headline font Brno 2016 is made by Vello Lutter and me. So this book is also the font specimen for Brno 2016.

FISSURES

Visual report on the district of Kopli in Tallinn, seen through an Italian exchange student’s eyes. The place has deeply fascinated me and the distinctive feature of it is the visual contrast between its elements. The old wooden barracks,the soviet buildings and the decay are in contrast with the calmness of a narrow foreshore, the intimacy of the houses and the everyday life of modest residents. These are the differences that together shape the spirit and the magic atmosphere of Kopli. The project is based on this perceived feeling, through a visitor point of view, that tried to go deeper and to comprehend the history of an enchanting place. Those emotions are shown to relatives and friends, not only in a visually way, but also with the help of personal comments.

THE LAST CALPULLI | Guardian armour sets based on Mexica battle & ritual garments and mythology. They wield weapons fitted with obsidian blades and wooden handles, carved from the Tree of Silver Wings, and shield their faces with obsidian visors...

I welcome constructive criticism and ideas on how to finish these three, or for more Guardian concepts based on Mesoamerican cultures (and myths from elsewhere...) ♥

The Macuahuitl is a weapon composed of a wooden 'bat' with obsidian edges- it existed in a standard size, and a larger and heavier one called Huitzauhqui, which is what the Titan carries. They also had spears with similar configuration, like the warlock's-the Tepoztopilli. The hunter carries obsidian daggers called Tecpatl (which were primarily used ritualistically rather than in combat... but it's justified because 'space magic', I guess).

The decision of what to base the armor of the sorcerer and titan on was very easy- they were inspired by Eagle and Jaguar Knights... the first one wields a Light shield (or Chimalli), not Void, but Solar, with fire plumes hanging from the bottom. He'd get along well with the Cabal, they'd like his stories of the (by then near-forgotten) Flowery Wars.

The sorcerer could be a Stormcaller if I incorporated elements related to Tlaloc... but I'm already too taken with the eagle helmet, which is related to Huitzilopochtli and the Sun. So yes, I guess I could leave him as a Dawnblade, and have the hunter be a Bladedancer for good measure... although I thought of him as a Nightstalker at first.

That hunter is so elusive that not even his creator-designer can get a good grip on him. I thought of basing him on an Underworld-related deity- Itzpapalotl or Xolotl. The first is the Obsidian Butterfly-a very warlike lady with claws in hands and feet (hence the daggers), or on the tips of her wings- taken from a moth species called 'Four Mirrors' on account of the reflective areas in each wing. In context it is implied that the 'mirrors' are (symbolically) obsidian- a material that represented the duality of the human soul for the Mexicas: black as night, but able to reflect dazzling light in the right angle. Itzpapálotl is the protector of a very special place in the Mictlán... the birthplace of humanity, the garden where the wet-nurse tree, Chichihuacuauhco, grows, where children who died at birth (or without tasting any food besides mother's milk) would be nourished while they waited for the next Sun-cycle to reincarnate. With so much talk about young casualties (human and others) of the game's conflicts, another protector specifically for them would be welcome, I think...

But Xolotl is my favourite- his name means 'monster' (axólotl meaning 'water monster' & being one of his 'avatars' or 'nahual' along with xoloitzcuintle dogs), and he's a patron of deformity and disease... of duality and movement (Ollin), of things born with two heads, of twins (Xolotl himself being the twin brother of the much more charismatic feathered-snake Quetzalcóatl- who deserves his own design...) and lightning... which might merit making the Hunter an Arcstrider instead. And I could give him a 'xolito' dog helmet or base it on an axolotl, which could be a fun challenge... The helmet you see here is a bat's head, but I think they had more meaning to Mayans and Zapotecs than Mexicas... I love its shapes, though, and I guess I could expand the project to 'Mesoamerican Guardians' in general...

I initially wanted to make them specifically Mexica culture-based to enter an armor design project which demanded that specificity, but I didn't make it on time, so I guess that's no longer necessary.
