What Vietnam Was Like!
After hearing so much about Vietnam, my dad decided to book us the flights. we packed our bags at the chance.
Dad planned, a lot. Researching what google had to say about vietnam to come up with an extra ordinary one week itinerary and eventually I had a clear picture in my mind of what I thought I was about to experience. i imagined Big billboards, shanty towns, loads of people, sweaty sun, street markets, no order whatsoever and either filled with friendly people. I can pinpoint when the craziness of Ho Chi Minh City hit me, almost literally. We’d been there about 30 minutes, but only out of the hotel about 10. We were standing on the island just outside the Ben Thanh Market with traffic rushing past to every side of us, in front and behind. The other thing that shocked me about Vietnam was the price. my whole family went for a full-on 60-minute massage which cost just 100,000 dong (around ₹350).
The vietnamese food is really great but it got me sick to my stomach so i stuck to indian food, and no, finding indian food is really difficult in that country. We did every thing what a tourist would do, massages, hair braids, street shopping, street food. At last we visited the Vinpearl water park, which was so great, because it was on a separate island, so we had to take a speed boat to reach it.

PATTAYA, Thailand—The neon-lit red light district screams of sex.
In an apartment near Pattaya’s infamous Walking Street, Auchanaporn Pilasata studies her reflection in the mirror, applies another layer of plum-shade lipstick, and touches up her black eyeliner. In the corner of her mirror are two photographs: one from when she looked like a scrawny 15-year-old boy, and another, post-transition, as the stunning woman she is today.
The 37-year-old, who goes by Anna, has been a transgender sex worker for 17 years. While transitioning, she left a low-paying job in a cosmetics packaging factory on the outskirts of Bangkok to become a cabaret dancer in nearby Pattaya, a beach town with a reputation for wild nightlife. She took a temporary job at a “special” massage parlor to earn some cash. Her very first client propositioned her for sex.
“He said, ‘I give you 3,000 baht [$85]. One hour,’” Anna recalled. “[When] I worked in factory, [I made] 6,000 baht in one month. This is the beginning [of] my story [as a] sex worker.”
Thailand has long been one of the world’s major sex tourism destinations. Estimates of sex work’s contribution to GDP vary widely because the industry operates almost entirely underground. But in 2015, the black market research company Havocscope valued it at $6.4 billion per year—about 1.5 percent of the country’s GDP that year.
Despite earning billions annually, the industry is effectively illegal, controversial among Thais, and highly stigmatized. Now, the debate over sex work is spilling into public forums, with a progressive lawmaker introducing a bill in parliament to legalize it. Its proponents argue that criminalization has deprived sex workers of basic labor rights and protections enjoyed by other workers, making them more vulnerable to health risks, harassment, exploitation, and violence—while making sex work itself no less visible.
Visiting Thailand and not noticing any sex workers? It’s like going to “KFC and you never see fried chicken,” Anna said.
The majority of sex workers in the world are women, and a 2017 projection by the Thai Department of Disease Control conservatively estimated that 129,000 of 144,000 sex workers in the country were female. But it’s men who make the decisions about what they can do with their bodies.
Women held 16 percent of Thailand’s parliamentary seats in 2021, the same figure as 10 years ago. By comparison, women made up 20 percent of Saudi Arabia’s governing assembly and 28 percent of the U.S. Congress that year.
The fight for legalization is an uphill battle. Conservative factions within the country and global anti-trafficking organizations remain strongly opposed to sex work. The U.S. Agency for International Development calls Thailand a “source, transit, and destination country” for trafficking, and opponents of the bill say the sex industry enables widespread abuse of women and children across the country and in neighboring Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar.
Historical reports of sex work existing in Thailand date back to the 1300s. The modern sex industry in Thailand boomed while serving a wave of Chinese immigrants in the early 1900s, Japanese soldiers during World War II, and U.S. soldiers during the Vietnam War. But many Thais grew resentful of its visibility and notoriety. The country adopted the Suppression of Prostitution Act in 1960, followed by the 1996 Prevention and Suppression of Prostitution Act, which outlawed almost all of the activities associated with sex work and income earned from it.
The push against prostitution was further bolstered in the 2000s, when the U.S. government, the religious right, and abolitionist feminists came together in an unlikely alliance. Their goal was to eliminate prostitution. The U.S. movement gained traction globally as those forces traveled to campaign against sex work in countries abroad, including Thailand.
Within Thailand, officials often downplay the prevalence of prostitution in order to present a more positive view of the country to the outside world and appease constituents opposed to sex work. After a Jan. 14 inspection, police said they were “satisfied” after finding no “illegal prostitutes” working in Pattaya, much to the amusement of social media commentators.
“Why don’t they ask all the girl [sic] standing all around if they have seen some sexworkers,” one Facebook user posted.
In practice, the revenues from sex work sustain a robust illicit economy and can be an important lifeline for women whose backgrounds range from educated college graduates to poor rural farmers. Many believe that some form of legal recognition, either decriminalization or legalization, would help to reduce violence against sex workers and give them rights and benefits that would help them, particularly during difficult financial times.
In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a standstill and global tourism dried up, around 91 percent of Thai sex workers lost their jobs due to lockdowns, border closures, and social-distancing measures, according to the World Health Organization. As illegal workers, they did not qualify for government relief benefits during the pandemic.
“A lot of [sex workers] could not pay the rent and they had to sleep on the street,” said Supachai Sukthongsa, the Pattaya manager of Service Workers in Group (SWING), a services and support group. “They worked and cleaned up at the bar in exchange for small money and food, just enough to survive day by day.”
The pandemic also reduced access to health care services. Whether they get their business through dating apps, pimps, or on the street, sex workers face numerous risks to their health and safety. The Sex Workers Project, an advocacy organization based in New York, found that sex workers globally face a 45 percent to 75 percent chance of experiencing violence on the job. Transgender women such as Anna face an added layer of danger from clients who turn violent after discovering their identities.
“When I go to the police station,” Anna said, they don’t “help me because [of] my job, because I work illegal work here in Thailand.”
Sex workers frequently accuse Thai police of extorting or ignoring them. Researchers such as Ronald Weitzer, a sociologist and professor with expertise in sex work in Thailand, also accuse police of being heavily involved in sex tourism and profiting off of the industry.
“The authorities, especially the police, have a vested interest in keeping prostitution illegal,” Weitzer said. “They get payoffs.”
Gen. Surachate Hakparn, deputy commissioner-general of the Royal Thai Police, said he believes legalizing sex work could cut down on such activities.
“I admit that there is corruption going on, but it’s only a fraction of police officers doing that,” he said. “From a law enforcement perspective, if it is legalized, it’s good for the police. We don’t need to keep disciplining our subordinates about corruption. And we can put the resources and time into something else.”
Globally, the legal status of sex work is divided into three broad categories: criminalization, legalization, and decriminalization.
The legalization model regulates the registration, health care, and welfare of sex workers. In contrast, the decriminalization model simply removes penalties for pursuing the activity.
There are also hybrid models, such as the Nordic model in countries such as Sweden and Norway, which blend elements of legalization and decriminalization.
It’s the criminalization model that’s employed by about half the world, including most of the United States. It involves the criminalization of every party: the seller, the buyer, and third parties such as pimps or traffickers.
According to the 2018 Global Slavery Index, published by an Australian human rights organization, Thailand is home to about 610,000 human trafficking victims. Although the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime says most of these victims are trafficked for manual labor, some women and girls are forced into sex work.
While the U.S. government says the Thai government is doing an increasingly good job fighting against trafficking, hard-line anti-traffickers remain vehemently against legalization.
“It’s consumption with nothing in return,” said Sanphasit Koompraphant, the chairperson of Thailand’s Anti-Trafficking Alliance. “It’s sexual exploitation.”
But the criminalization model most anti-traffickers support has come increasingly under attack from sex work activists.
A growing body of research shows that criminalization forces sex workers to operate under more dangerous conditions, increasing risks of sexually transmitted infections, physical abuse, and exploitation—including by police. Aside from stigmatizing the work, bans also mean that many sex workers will end up with a criminal record if caught soliciting, making it harder for them to get other jobs and pushing them deeper into the sex industry.
Weitzer argues that criminalizing sex work has not succeeded in stopping its proliferation and has strong parallels to the U.S. war on drugs.
“The evidence is clear that it’s a complete failure,” he said.
In June 2022, Tunyawaj Kamolwongwat, a progressive parliamentarian with the upstart Move Forward Party, drafted a bill that would establish designated zones for legal sex work. To ensure compliance with its proposed regulations, he said the bill calls for random checks to be carried out to verify licenses, the age of the sex workers, and whether illegal drugs are present.
He said the bill also outlines how the industry will be taxed and specifies locations where it can’t be practiced or advertised, such as near temples and schools.
“It has to [be] away from the children,” Tunyawaj said.
But some sex workers also oppose legalization. Juno Mac, a prominent sex worker and activist, said legalization can create a “two-tiered system” in which wealthier establishments can afford to comply with regulations, while marginalized sex workers operating independently cannot.
Rather than the special regulation and taxation that comes with legalization, Mac prefers decriminalization, which treats sex work like any other work.
Weitzer noted that decriminalization also has limitations, with the lack of regulations allowing existing bad actors—rampant throughout the industry—to continue exploiting workers.
But its supporters say the decriminalization model is more likely to help sex workers better integrate into mainstream society.
“If [we have] legalization, that means that we have the specific law to say this kind of job [is] legal. But we don’t want to have a specific law,” said Surang Janyam, the founder and director of SWING. “If we have specific laws for sex workers, we should have specific laws with every occupation. Decriminalize will [make us] equal as other people.”
Whether through legalization or decriminalization, Weitzer said the odds are stacked against changing the legal status of sex work.
“The majority of legislators are opposed to it, and every time it’s been proposed in the past, I don’t think it’s even gotten out of committee,” Weitzer said.
The last major push was in 2003, when proposed legislation was debated but failed to pass.
Tunyawaj’s June 2022 bill was not reviewed by the board of the parliamentary committee for youth, women, and other vulnerable groups until November 2022. At that point, the committee recommended transferring it to Thailand’s Ministry of Social Development and Human Security. The draft bill will be reviewed again in the next term of the government, and Tunyawaj hopes that having the backing of the Ministry will improve its chances. The fate of the bill now rests in the hands the new government, which will be elected in May.
If reelected, Tunyawaj promises to “keep pushing this bill.”
His coalition is growing. Surachate said the main thing missing is political will.
“The government can solve this matter, if they take it seriously,” he said.

It's so hot in Phuket that we find ourselves pretty happy to do . . . not a whole lot. It's a beautiful (did I say hot!?!) place to laze around, swim a little, drink a little, and plan something for later. Lots of reading happening.
The flavors and tastes in Thailand are much more in line with what we had expected of Southeast Asian food. Strong, lovely espresso. Croissants with pistachio (?) spread ~ my fav. Exotic fruits with yogurt. Guava and passion fruit juices. As time goes on though, we've gotten to the point where putting more stuff in our mouths just doesn't sound all that appealing. 🤪
What we've found surprising in Thailand is what seems to be a lackadaisical approach to service. How much is a taxi into town? Quizzical, not a clue look. Do you have a map of Old Town Phuket? Nope. Full stop. Our solo bar tender went outside for a smoke during the height of the evening, with musicians playing their hearts out and empty wine glasses on the tables. Don't think it's the language barrier (which is mammoth), something "off" with the people, or us being entitled. There's just something about the culture that's been difficult to understand from a western perspective. I've come away glad that I didn't teach English here because if I'm to be honest, I may have really struggled. (Course I'm only seeing what we're experiencing in this little corner and I suspect had we gone to a western owned chain resort our experience would have been different.) Now Vietnam on the other hand . . . Those sweet, brave children would have SOOOOO appreciated the cultural exchange and chance to learn. The parents too. That's my take away anyway.

Sunday night market is a MAJOR attraction in the Old Town of Phuket. Just an amazing scene with plentitudes of really great street food. I was able to fit a Thai massage in at Kim's first. (Didn't understand the mechanics of undressing at all and my masseuse guy wasn't super helpful in that department; pretty awkward, but thank goodness I'm old enough to handle it 🙈😂🙈). Finished the evening at a wine bar with a fabulous jazz duo from CA.

Spent the afternoon at the"public" pool. Refreshing for sure ~ and with refreshments too (after an unnecessarily complicated ordering process). Ummmmm, so Thai?

Woke to a video of one of life's incredible moments. It's a boy! 💜💚💜
Second trip into the Old Town for a mani/pedi (can't imagine what was being said about my well weathered heels 🤪) and lunch at Raya's (a local haunt for royals; pretty great curry!) Even bought a pair of linen pants. Big-time focus on Kate day.

Exploring the Enduring Legacy of Chinese Culture: A Tapestry of Tradition and Influence
Tumblr media
According to "The Beauty of Asia" blog,
"Chinese culture is deeply rooted in tradition and has influenced neighboring countries in areas such as language, cuisine, martial arts, and traditional medicine. The Chinese language, Mandarin, is the most widely spoken language in the world."
In the vast tapestry of global culture, few threads are as intricate and enduring as that of Chinese tradition. Stretching back millennia, the rich heritage of China has woven its way into the very fabric of neighboring countries, leaving an indelible mark on everything from language and cuisine to martial arts and medicine.
Language: The Towering Pillar of Communication
At the heart of Chinese culture lies its language, a linguistic tapestry as diverse and nuanced as the nation itself. With a history spanning over 3,000 years, Chinese characters not only serve as a means of communication but also as a vessel for cultural transmission. From the sprawling metropolises of Beijing and Shanghai to the remote villages of rural China, the language serves as a unifying force, binding together people from all walks of life.
Yet, its influence extends far beyond China's borders. Through centuries of trade and cultural exchange, Chinese characters have seeped into the lexicons of neighboring countries such as Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, shaping the very foundation of their written languages and imbuing them with a sense of shared heritage.
Cuisine: A Symphony of Flavors
No exploration of Chinese culture would be complete without delving into its world-renowned cuisine. From the fiery spices of Sichuan to the delicate flavors of Cantonese cuisine, Chinese food is as diverse as the country itself. Rooted in centuries-old culinary traditions, Chinese cuisine reflects the nation's agricultural abundance, regional diversity, and cultural heritage.
But the influence of Chinese cuisine doesn't stop at the country's borders. Throughout Asia and beyond, dishes like dumplings, noodles, and stir-fries have become beloved staples, their flavors adapted and reinterpreted to suit local palates. Whether enjoyed in a bustling street market or a Michelin-starred restaurant, Chinese cuisine continues to captivate taste buds and inspire culinary innovation around the globe.
Martial Arts: The Art of Discipline
From the graceful movements of Tai Chi to the lightning-fast strikes of Kung Fu, martial arts occupy a central place in Chinese culture. Rooted in ancient traditions of self-defense and spiritual cultivation, these disciplines are more than just physical exercises—they are paths to self-discovery and enlightenment.
But the influence of Chinese martial arts extends far beyond the dojo. Throughout Asia and beyond, practitioners have spread the teachings of Tai Chi, Kung Fu, and other styles, influencing everything from Hollywood blockbusters to modern fitness trends. Yet, at its core, the practice remains a testament to the enduring power of tradition and the human spirit.
Traditional Medicine: Healing Body and Soul
In the realm of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the body is seen not as a collection of separate parts, but as a holistic system in which balance is key. Drawing on centuries of accumulated knowledge, TCM encompasses a wide array of practices, from acupuncture and herbal medicine to massage and qigong.
Yet, the influence of TCM extends far beyond the realm of medicine. In recent years, practices like acupuncture and herbalism have gained popularity around the world, offering holistic alternatives to Western medical approaches. Rooted in ancient wisdom and guided by principles of balance and harmony, traditional Chinese medicine continues to offer healing and hope to millions.
The influence of Chinese culture stretches far and wide, shaping the lives and landscapes of people around the world. From the language we speak to the food we eat, the traditions of China continue to enrich and inspire, weaving a tapestry of diversity, resilience, and shared humanity.

#16 The last day
It was lovely to have Lois to hang out with today. We went to the top floor of the hotel for breakfast which had lovely views and then parted ways for the morning. She went to the women’s museum and I went for a 90 minute massage - luxury! My massage was incredible, such a fancy place and it only cost me $60! We rendezvoused for lunch - at you guessed it, coffee culture! It’s just such a good spot, I think it reminds me of Melbourne cafes, a little hipster and so delicious! After lunch we wandered for smoothie and then browsed at a rooftop bar, the views were epic! A nice way to see out our time in Vietnam. From here, we went to freshen up in the hotel before heading for one last Banh Mi. We found a well rated one and boy, it did not disappoint. A little souvenir shopping from there, before some dessert at a cafe we went to on the food tour. Sticky rice with Ice Cream and a Carmel Flan with Mango. So delicious! What a day of food! We wandered the streets back to our hotel and I’m am extremely excited to return home to road rules and footpaths! In Vietnam, they do anything but walk on the footpath. I’ve seen restaurants fry food there, build fires, people park bikes, barbers do haircut’s - it’s like, let’s do anything but walk there! And then you walk on the road, where there’s lanes and zebra crossing that are truely ignored. Madness, but it is an epic place to experience. My anxieties to walk the street will definitely be 100% lower returning home. I’ll say goodbye to Lois later tonight and fly tomorrow morning! What an adventure!

Week 12 - A Tale of Two Cities and a Loop of a Lifetime
Xin Chao everyone,
The last week was spent traveling through Vietnam, from Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) up to Ha Noi (the capital), and then along the Ha Giang loop which took us into the beautiful countryside of the north. The trip was the first experience of what we felt were genuinely foreign lands. The language, customs, and pace of life felt unique to what we had known.
After our nine-hour, cross-hemisphere, journey we landed at the busy airport in Ho Chi Minh City. We had procrastinated our visas so we had to finalize our rushed, on-arrival application at the airport. A few hours later than we expected, and with millions of dong lining our pockets (~ 100 USD), we stepped out into the night. Our Grab (Asia’s Uber) driver took us to our hostel. He drove us through downtown and wow. Droves of scooters clad with anywhere from one driver to a whole family and their dog maneuver around cars, pedestrians, and each other to get to their destinations with speed.
Tumblr media
We couldn’t peel our eyes away from the dozens of collisions that seemed imminent and deadly but would flow into near misses. Through our translate app, the driver confirmed that collisions happen far too frequently and that the traffic rules are more like suggestions rather than codified laws.
After hurriedly checking in, we rushed out into the streets surrounding our hostel. We immediately fell in love with the hustle and energy that came from every street vendor, flashing sign, and musician, even the cats and dogs of the street seemed alive and rapt in the world they were in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After a delicious first meal of pho and seafood, we wandered into the nearby night market and “backpacker street”. There were vendors selling everything from frog legs to knock-off Adidas, from traditional silk garments to the “best” Bahn Mi in Vietnam. We kept walking and found ourselves in what we’d later figure out was known as the “backpacker street”. A bustling nightlife street where tourist’s attention is competed for above all else. The glamour and shine from the building facades frankly felt disingenuous and scammy. We did have a few memorable moments, the passionate live rendition of the song “Zombie” by the Cranberries and a fire-spitting performance from a Vietnamese girl.
Tumblr media
The next morning we woke up, early and bleary-eyed, to catch our tour bus leaving for the Cu Chi Tunnels. The tour took us through the Cu Chi region, north-west of the city, for a lengthy in-depth look into how the Vietcong (who in many cases were the local farmers by day) defended against the might of the US in the Vietnam War. We learned about the amazing and often brutal resourcefulness of the Vietcong, from the hidden traps made out of recycled American gear to the building of the over 250 km network of tunnels. It was a fascinating insight into the war from the other side's perspective.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After our tour, we made it back and crashed, waiting for the start of our next adventure: Ho Chi Minh street food on the back of motorbikes. With our immodium at the ready, we swung our legs over the back of our drivers’ bikes and joined the mass of speeding vehicles. The four-hour tour took us into six different districts and many more exotic bites. From caramelized rice-covered bananas to duck fetuses, the guide took us into the back streets and to his favorite childhood vendors. He colored each meal with a story of the relevance and history behind every dish.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After parting with our group, stuffed but determined to make time out of our final night in Ho Chi Minh, we called on our friend Bridget’s nightclub recommendations. The first bar we went to ended up being closed so we decided on Bam Bam. The club's dancefloor and bar are situated in the basin of an empty indoor swimming pool. We danced to the hits of 2015, whipping the night away.
The next day we signed up for a full-body, 60-minute massage because of the price ($15) and how many people had recommended we try this spa. However, when the masseuse spent 30 minutes on one foot our excitement turned to dread. Our request was lost in translation and instead of the back massage we were fantasizing about, we got an aggressive foot and leg massage that left us fighting back tears and laughs in equal measure.
We stumbled to the airport to take our flight to Ha Noi. That night, after checking into the backpacker-friendly hostel (free beer from 7-8 pm), we rushed into the surrounding streets of the Old Quarter. We enjoyed a traditional Vietnamese meal and washed it down with our first cup of Egg Coffee. The drink was the highlight of the day up to that point, it is essentially a cup of black coffee generously topped with whipped vanilla, sugar, and egg yolk. An invention that came from the milk shortage the country experienced during the decades of war in the 20th century.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We hurried back to the hostel to catch the hostel-sponsored bar crawl and then proceeded to have one of the best nights out during our time abroad. A night made all the better when we met up at the first stop with our friend Kaye who had just come from the airport.
The next morning we forced down some brunch at the Hanoi Social Club recommended by Bridget and then headed off to the Serene Spa for our second attempt at a massage. I can’t recommend this place enough, we were greeted with tea and given a form to fill out that let us choose what kind of massage, how much pressure, and which parts of our body we wanted them to focus on or avoid.
We left feeling dazed but very much at peace with the world. We met up with our friend Erin (she was coming off a couple-day Thailand trip) for an early dinner and then we boarded the sleeper bus that would take us, overnight, to the town of Ha Giang.
Tumblr media
The Ha Giang Loop
From Thursday morning to Saturday afternoon Erin, Kaye, Sam, Viv, and I rode on the back of a motorcycle along a loop through the northern countryside of Vietnam. Over mountains and through valleys, on dirt roads, and over rivers, we traversed 400 km of road in 3 days with a group of around 15 others. The experience was easily the best part of our trip and it was something that couldn’t help but put a deep smile on your face. One of the Irish women in our group said - “This is the second time doing the loop in two weeks, the first time literally cured my depression and I just needed to experience the exhilaration and peace with a different tour group as soon as possible.”
Day 1
We made it to our hostel around 6 am and were given 90 minutes to nap before breakfast was served. After a quick breakfast, we got a quick overview of the next three days and then met our drivers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our first stop was a boat tour on a river that cut through the mountains and made for scenic photos. We then made stops every half hour or so to stretch our legs and to take in particularly scenic overlooks. These frequent stops would sometimes include roadside markets, ranging anywhere from one person’s food stand to rows of shops with a variety of goods.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before making it to that night’s hostel, we overshot the town it was in to get to a mountainous overlook into China, which borders the northern parts of Vietnam. Once back, we settled into the hostel, took our much-needed showers, and scarfed down the innumerable Vietnamese dishes. Most of the places we ate brought out dishes that each had their own food item which could be assembled and mixed with rice in your bowl. Anyway, after another one of these communal meals, we tried our hand at the traditional Vietnamese bamboo dance which involved four sets of two bamboo sticks that would rhythmically bounce and then clap in the air, the idea was to bring your feet in and out of these bamboo “jaws” before closing. The dance took a lot of concentration and several tries before we confidently stepped through the moving formations.
Day 2
The next day we woke up similarly early and hit the road around 9 AM. Our first stop was at the start of a stone path that led to a short climb up a local peak. The climb itself was very enjoyable and reminiscent of parts of New Zealand. Along the way, we reached what we had presumed to be as high as we could go when several little Vietnamese children appeared behind a rock above us and extended their hands, “We know the way up, do you want to see?”. I trusted these kids with my life. These children of the mountain guiding us to the seemingly treacherous summit felt like it was out of a storybook.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After another memorable lunch, our final stop before the night’s homestay was a nearby waterfall. The fall emptied into a swimming hole with a bar and benches installed on the rocky slopes surrounding the basin. We spent over an hour following the example of the locals by jumping off of progressively higher parts of the rock face.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As it was our final night in the loop, the chef and drivers prepared and served a feast. Throughout the meal, our group leader led us in rounds of “happy water” shots, some liqueur they called corn wine.
Each round went something like this:
“Are you ready??” - “Yesssss!”
“Are you ready!?!” - “YESSSSS”
“Mot… Hai… Ba… DZO(yo)!” (1… 2… 3… Cheers)
Repeated I think for six to seven rounds, by which time the food was cleared and tables were being rearranged to make room for the night’s karaoke dance party.
Tumblr media
Day 3
The next morning we were dropped off at the local village market. Piglets, live fish, and enough random (health) drugs to supply a pharmacy were just a few of the things being sold. We then had lunch in a town where almost all of the traditional buildings were made out of clay, each one-bedroom house was selling for around $1000 if anyone reading this is interested. The town was also a blue zone or a place where its inhabitants routinely live to be 100+ years old.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We made it back to Ha Giang, bums hurting and hearts broken to leave our trusty motorcycle drivers and companions. We boarded the bus back to Ha Noi for our 6-hour ride back to the city. The drive was more eventful than I could have expected, aside from the customary aggressive driving there was an extremely close collision with a pickup truck, even by Vietnam standards. So much so that the driver got out of the vehicle and confronted the driver of the pickup truck. All occupants of the bus were glued to the windows along the side of the bus as our heated driver proceeded to slap the truck driver with full force. The moment was awkward enough but, in his rage, our driver brought the truck driver up into the bus and slapped him in front of us while ridiculing him in Vietnamese.
It was something we didn’t know how to respond to but I guess it made for a good story.
The bus was pretty silent after that, and I felt an internal sigh of relief when we arrived at our destination.
Once we checked into our hostel, Kaye, Sam and I wanted to see the city at night again before leaving. Our midnight strolls took us to two different Bahn Mi vendors and a juice cart.
The morning after we assembled our least dirty outfits and then went to the nearest Gong Cha Tea to try some Southeast Asian Boba. Afterward, we ate at Pho 10 and ran some last-minute shopping before our mad dash to the airport.
Tumblr media
I’m writing this on the other side of our 15-hour journey back to Sydney. I can’t help but feel like there was so much more to see and I could easily spend a few months exploring this beautiful, energetic country.
If you are considering where to go in Southeast Asia, almost every traveler we talked to who had been to Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, etc, all felt Vietnam was their favorite if not in their top two favorite countries in the area.
I hope you enjoyed and thank you for making it this far.
Take care everyone,

Have had a couple of days in Phuket to think about our Vietnam experience. At our Farewell Dinner, Tuan asked us to share two trip highlights. I didn't yet feel ready.
One reason was that many highlights were moments that happened separate from the group. Swimming with Aaron in the South China Sea. Looking at the colored lanterns while walking hand- in-hand on the night streets of Hoi An. Seeing Aaron's glow as he told me about his standout dinner experience at Rue and then offering four carefully packaged take out boxes so that I might enjoy the experience too. Getting measured for a second dress at that sweet little woman's shop. Having our quiet cup of coffee on the deck before the group got up, looking at the wonders of Ha Long Bay. Sharing a drink on the roof top at The Rex after a memorable performance in Saigon. Connecting with Nancy as a special friend.

The other reason was that I needed to let it all sink in. The moments I shared that night were right, but the "why's" weren't yet clear to me.
The impact of ongoing war lives on in Vietnam. 100 years of tortuous French colonial rule led to new ideas under Ho Chi Minh. Then, as so often happens, greed prevailed and land reform was a grab that back fired. Promises broken led to civil war. The winners of that war who are tied to the Party have much privilege today. A full 90% of the population however is not party to that privilege. They work oh so hard. They toe the line. The Communist ideals continue to evolve within the modern global market economy. They worry about China. The country is clearly in transition.
So indeed, one of my most memorable moments was meeting the gentle man from the south who shared so much. And in so doing, taught so much. The idea that I'm not able to record anything he said which is still just unfathomable. It all really sunk in.

A country broken? It's hard to say. The people are unwaveringly positive and present focused.
A second most memorable moment was meeting the nun at the monastery. She exuded peace. Care. Love. Presence. Acceptance. I realize now that watching Tuan interact with each of our hosts on the trip made everything all the more impactful. He is a perfect representative of the kind of respect, honesty and kindness that is so important to the country's culture.
Tumblr media
The spontaneous sharing of music is always special. Imagine indeed.
Someone in our group asked about recycling. There is trash littered in the waterways and streets throughout the country. Later, Tuan saw a woman on the street who was sorting through trash bags. He stopped to ask her what she collected and how she got paid, all the while treating her with the utmost of respect. After an insightful conversation, he pulled a $20 US bill out of his pocket (a fortune!) and offered it to her in thanks. Classic Tuan. She was overwrought with joy. (Another traveling insight ~ we are literally wealthy in Vietnam. To not even think about a taxi ride, the cost of a meal or a massage is so wildly freeing. And yet so jarringly difficult too. So . . . Not . . . Fair.)
Tumblr media
The Bamboo Circus at the Opera House was a perfect culmination of our trip. The Vietnamese are flexible like bamboo. May these beautiful people find their way to ongoing peace, health and happiness. ❤️🇻🇳❤️

Exploration in Soc Trang (7/10) || Caitlyn Kim (UCSD)
Ok deep breath here we go... EXCURSION DAY!!! Just looking at my camera roll, today was the most eventful. Our day started bright and early at 6am (woo we got to sleep in!!!). The boat to the mayor's island surprised me because I wasn't expecting motorcycles and cars to be able to travel across too, but we made it across with no problems 🙂. The garden was super pretty - there were dogs following us and so many fresh rambutans and jackfruits. I'm really gonna miss having all of the fresh fruit just readily available in Vietnam :'). The mayor's wife made really good banh xeo too, that we ate while fending off wasps and mosquitos. A group of us went on a walk through the garden and someone (I think it was the mayor's wife?) had us take pictures amongst the trees. I'm not sure what happened to those pictures. Next on our excursion day list was the Soc Trang Vincom Center and massage. My group got boba across the street first, but then it started POURING until the street we had to cross to get to the mall was flooded. We quickly ran across, but we were all soaked without even being in the rain for a minute. In the mall, I tried Jollibee for the first time! The fried chicken was ok, but apparently it's better in the US. Then it was time for the massage. Haley, Sammy, Sarah and I got the hair and shoulders massage which felt sooo nice especially after the garden (which was still the same day btw) and the sudden downpour. For dinner, we had a banquet with the Soc Trang leaders. Somehow it turned into a karaoke and people started lowkey raving to the Viet music. Eventually though, we got to back to the hotel for some much needed rest and to pack for our next days in Saigon.
