Space Ghost Coast to Coast #85: “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed” | December 7, 2003 - 11:30 PM | S08E04
Happy 20th anniversary, Adult Swim. And, boy, what a momentous episode of Ghost do we have here to celebrate. There are a number of episodes where the guest is an event unto itself and this is truly one of them. Frequent punchline William Shatner is an absolute cunt... and a proper legend. His cuntiness and legendary status are two things that seem to be at odds with one another, and the Space Ghost crew have managed to come up with an artfully idiosyncratic episode to match Shatner’s weird-guy-ness. It’s a classic for sure, and important. But (making a “smug dipshit” face) is it funny?
YES! It’s FUNNY! I will admit though, the first time I saw this episode I didn’t quite know what to make of it. This is partially because I’m very much a Star Trek agnostic. I’ve never been into Star Trek. In the last few years I’ve watched most of the pre-Next Gen motion pictures for inane list-making reasons, and I enjoyed them to varying degrees, but Star Trek is truly not for me. I’m more of a... well, I’m not a Star Wars guy either. What’s the other one? Uh... Spaceballs. That’s it. I’m more of a Spaceballs guy.
But I feel like I’ve absorbed a lot of Star Trek lore through cultural osmosis. I vaguely understand that William Shatner has had some deliberately-paced choreographed fight scene on those rocks from Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. When I hear music similar to the the music that Jim Carrey hums in The Cable Guy, I’m pretty sure whatever it is I’m watching is doing a Star Trek thing. And yes, I’ve watched every single Red Letter Media “Mike and Rich talk about Star Trek for 4 hours” video. But even today, after having picked up more Star Trek knowledge on my journey to the grave, I still have this nagging feeling of “I only sort of get this”.
Still, this episode has a handful of screamingly funny lines, and the episode ends wonderfully, with Space Ghost in his death throes, suffering the ultimate indignity of dying in front of William Shatner. There’s also the part where Zorak asks why everyone in Star Trek is black, and a part where Moltar nervously reads from his fan fiction (from a book labeled TARD WARS, hahaha). Shatner, who has a reputation for being arrogant and difficult, is as good a sport as one could hope. The show makes good use of his hammier moments, and only shits on him slightly in the process. The most notable moment is when Shatner says to Zorak “didn't you and I fight to the death?” to which Zorak replies “That sounds pretty dumb, man”. I’ve actually quoted this line many times. It’s one of the best.
Also, for those of you who like to track these things: the show features callbacks to other episodes and shows; the handimen at Zorak’s apartment are clearly extras from Sealab 2020/2021, one of the Leprechauns from Aqua Teen Hunger Force shows up, and there’s a poignant callback to classic Space Ghost episode “Banjo”.
The title motif of this season is naming the episodes after Allman Brothers songs, and I always wondered about this one. Maybe I’m reaching, and it’s probably too disrespectful to be true, but I always thought that it was somehow a veiled reference to Shatner’s wife, whom he supposedly killed or let die. It’s simply too dark to be true, but it’s the first thought that immediately jumped to my mind when I first heard the title of this episode. Am I stupid for thinking this? Am I stupid because it OBVIOUSLY is a reference to that?? I simply do not know. I would like to know.

The big anniversary is upon us. What are your 20 favorite things about adult swim for 20 years going. Don't sleep on this question!
I gotta do SOMETHING special, so I might as well do this. More thought could have gone into this, but I spent about an hour trying to come up with episodes or moments from 20 different shows and putting them in rough chronological order. I limited myself to one episode/scene/moment/joke/whatever per show so it’s not all Space Ghost jokes. So, here we go:
Sealab 2021: “I, Robot”. Adult Swim proved it could be brilliant right out of the gate with the stealth premiere of “I, Robot”, but for Sealab it’s all downhill from here. (2000)
Space Ghost Coast to Coast: Space Ghost stops in his tracks to reminisce about the time Bobcat Goldthwait said "crack a window". The entire episode “Kentucky Nightmare” is brilliant, but this moment in particular so uniquely captures my sense of humor that it’s inexplicable. The dumb look on Space Ghost’s face when he stops in his tracks. Goddamn. (2001)
Aqua Teen Hunger Force: “Mayhem of the Mooninites” I tried very hard to make this all be individual jokes or scenes or whatever, but this is another episode where the entire thing is just line after line and I can’t really pick. This, “I Robot”, and “Kentucky Nightmare” is like a perfect trio illustrating how good Adult Swim really was right out of the gate. (2001)
Home Movies: Jason casually reveals that his parents have no idea who Brendon and Melissa are and that he spends most of his free-time making movies with them. This is the episode “Storm Warning” which is overall one of the best episodes of Home Movies, but this scene is probably my favorite. Illustrates how simple and hilarious the comedy is on this show. (2002)
Tom Goes to the Mayor: the end scene in “Undercover”, where they’ve shoddily reversed Tom’s various unnecessary surgeries and called him “Taumpy Tears” to boot. Positively sublime. (2006)
Metalocalypse: Dr. Rockso’s music video. From the episode “Dethclown”. I was never in love with this show as much as the true fans were, but there were a handful of incredible episodes. This episode basically tells one joke over and over and it’s very funny. It really ends with a bang showcasing Dr. Rockso’s shitty music video that celebrates cocaine use. His singing voice is hilarious. (2006)
Assy McGee: I am the only person in the world that defends Assy McGee as being “actually pretty good” and it’s all entirely due to this one line: Assy McGee (a pair of naked buttocks with legs, whose ass functions as his head) is forced to attend a black tie event and is just milling around wearing nothing but a black bow tie. Through clenched anus he delivers the line “I can barely breathe in this penguin suit”. The whole show is worth it for that joke. I don’t even know what episode it is except that it’s from one of the first few. I might not even have the line exactly right. But, I remember laughing so hard. I may not have laughed at Assy McGee again. (2006)
Saul of the Mole Men: The opening theme song. And nothing else. (2007)
Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!: Jim and Derrick. I should pick something more user-friendly maybe, since this episode almost entirely relies on being familiar with Tim & Eric’s previous episodes. But goddamn, this episode is such a funny concept (which is basically Tim & Eric doing an alternate MTV-ified version of Awesome Show) (2008)
Moral Orel: “Numb”. When Moral Orel suddenly stopped being a quirky Adult Swim comedy and suddenly started doing episodes that resembled art films. This episode is a fucking masterpiece. I remember sobbing the first time I saw it. There are a few in season 3 that are like that, but this one is my favorite. (2008)
Check it Out! with Dr. Steve Brule: Terry Bruge-Hiplo reviews “Dumpster’s Children”. Another bit of comedy that I’d describe as “inexplicable” and “sublime”, and it all hinges on an old man’s mouth. Holy fuck. I don’t think I’ve laughed harder than this at a TV show since. (2010)
Delocated: The ending of “Mole”, an extended Face/Off riff where Jon goes undercover as the scary mobster Sergei. In the final moments of the episode he marries a woman, fathers multiple children with her, and only then is pulled out of the mission. The episode is a tour-de-force of comic acting by Steve Cirbus, who is graciously allowed to shine for most of the episode. But man, that ending is fucking wonderful. (2010)
Venture Bros.: The ending of “Operation P.R.O.M.” a flurry of emotions hit me when “Like a Friend” by Pulp starts playing. The scene is so well done and weirdly touching. Brock realizes that deep down he gives a shit about the Venture family and is genuinely terrified something might happen to them. And then he gets to slaughter a bunch of Zorak monsters, which is also weirdly sweet. It’s even touching on a meta-level knowing that Jackson and Doc tried many times and failed to include licensed music in the show. I love Venture Bros, but I think we’d all be better off if this were the series finale. Sorry. I had to say it. (2010)
The Heart She Holler: The first scene with Patton being taught the way of the world posthumously by his father on a VHS tape. The first season of this show is amazing, but that scene, especially where Patton does a little Japanese bow and says “oh, hot dog!” is just hysterical. Literally every time a hot dog comes up in conversation my wife and I quote it. Please, do not scorn her, it’s not racist when SHE does it. (2011)
Eagleheart: The All That Jazz inspired finale. “Paradise Rising” is mostly a masterpiece, and how it ends is so fucking incredible. Easily the most under-rated show on Adult Swim and I’m not just saying that because... you know (mimes dick-sucking) (2014)
Rick and Morty: I watched the first two episodes of Rick and Morty, thought it was good, but for some reason didn’t become a devotee until my wife made me watch the Mr. Poopybutthole episode. It’s still my favorite episode, I think. (2015)
Brett Gelman’s Dinner in America: The “Dinner with” specials are all really good, but goddamn, this one hits. Should be shown in schools. I am going to go to every grade school in my county with an AR-15 (to get past the guards, of course) and I won’t leave until they call an assembly and they let me fumble around trying to find it on vimeo and play it for the students. (2016)
The Eric Andre Show: Eric interviews Steve Schirripa. The bit where he has an intern dip his balls in Steve’s spaghetti sauce is hilarious, naturally, but I’m here to showcase the running gag where every time Steve complains how hot the studio is, Eric just wordlessly hands him an ice cube until Steve explodes. It’s one of the most childishly hilarious things I’ve ever seen. It’s perfect. (2016)
Million Dollar Extreme Presents: World Peace: The Pick-Up artist sketch. I’m mostly unimpressed with MDE, and all but a few Sam Hyde bits leave me cold. But this sketch is a crowning achievement. I mean, I think these guys suck politically and are more mean than funny, but their sensibilities yielded one really incredible piece of comedy. Okay, I laughed at the blackface sketch too. There. You dragged it out of me. (2016) Joe Pera Talks With You: This show is beautiful and I love every episode. But the episode “Joe Pera Reads You The Church Announcements” Wherein Joe discovers a new-to-him song and can’t stop listening to it, is one of the most joyous episodes of television I’ve ever seen. A gateway episode. I tell everyone to please watch this one first. (2018)

The Weekend Warrior 9/3/21: SHANG-CHI, CINDERELLA, WORTH, MOGUL MOWGLI, YAKUZA PRINCESS, YEAR OF THE EVERLASTING STORM, and More
There’s only one new wide release this week but I’m not gonna say this movie title five times, because it’s so freakin’ long, that I can only really say it once. But it’s a good one! There’s also so many limited releases that as always, I just couldn’t get to all of them. (Word of warning: This column was finished under the influence of Churches' excellent new record, Screen Violence.)
Tumblr media
Marvel Studios’ second movie of 2021, SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS (Marvel/Disney) stars Simu Liu as the “Master of Kung-Fu” from the comics, making his very first appearance in any live-action form that I know of. I have to say that I loved the comics as a kid and was truly bummed when I sold my whole collection, knowing that a lot of the great run of the comics from the ‘70s and ‘80s that have never been reprinted. That being said, this is Marvel’s first solo character introduction going all the way back to Brie Larson as Captain Marvel back in March, 2019, and before that, you’d have to go back November, 2016 for Doctor Strange, since Black Panther was introduced in Captain America: Winter Soldier.
Shang-Chi is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who broke onto the scene with indie films like I Am Not a Hipster and the better-received Short Term 12, which also introduced much of the world to Larson, and then the two of them made an adaptation of The Glass House. Cretton then directed Michael B. Jordan, and again, Larson, in Just Mercy for Warner Bros., which grossed $36 million in early 2020 but never quite achieved the Oscar hopes some were expecting. Still, all that work with Larson paid off, because it got him a meeting with Kevin Feige and Marvel for him to pitch this.
Granted, Simu Liu is a bit of an unknown quantity, having not made too many movies and being best known for the sitcom, Kim’s Convenience. On the other hand, his co-star Awkwafina has been building quite an impressive career from her roles in the 2018 hits, Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean’s 8, plus her starring role in the indie, The Farewell, for which she won a Golden Globe (but really should have gotten an Oscar nomination). She’s taken that success to put it into her Comedy Central show, Nora from Queens, while also providing her voice for lots of animated movies, including this year’s Disney animated movie, Raya and the Last Dragon. Most who have seen the movie early have mentioned that her comic chemistry with Lu has stolen the movie and oddly, her “best friend” character Katy seems to be heading towards a larger part in the MCU.
If we look at movies based around characters who received solo films before appearing anywhere else in the MCU, we get the aforementioned Captain Marvel movie, which had an insane $153 million opening weekend, doing even better than the Distinguished Competition’s own solo female movie, Wonder Woman, even though the latter was definitely better known. Captain Marvel ended up grossing over $400 million domestic and over a billion worldwide. The Doctor Strange movie that preceded it, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, didn’t do quite well but still opened with $85 million and made $232 million domestic. A year earlier, Marvel Studios’ attempt to make Ant-Man a thing led to one of their bigger disappointments with that opening with “just” $57 million and grossing $180 million domestic. (That also cost $30 million less than Doctor Strange and $45 million less than Captain Marvel, but when you get to those budgets over $100 million, every dollar counts to making back that budget.)
As with many MCU movies, Shang-Chi has been receiving rave reviews with a strong 92% on Rotten Tomatoes from over 140 reviews (at this writing). My review of this is over at Below the Line, and I loved it, too. The big selling point for Shang-Chi is that like Black Panther was to African-Americans, this character is to Asian-Americans, being able to see the first Marvel movie starring an Asian-American, as well as a mostly Asian cast that includes the great Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh (who also starred in Crazy Rich Asians).
There are a few factors to bear in mind, and not just the COVID Delta variant one that we’ve been hearing so much about -- there’s no denying that things are getting worse, and hopefully this can be quelled before there’s another shutdown. This weekend is the four-day weekend with Labor Day on Monday, which has never been a great weekend at the movies, partially because schools have either started or are about to start and people just stop going to movies, despite there having been plenty of early September hits like Warner Bros’ It. September is definitely a new month for Marvel to release a movie, but with all the delays due to COVID, it’s a good (I’m not gonna use the term “experiment) to see if Marvel really can withstand the proverbial 12-month release calendar rather than their movies needing to be released over the summer or holidays or any other month.
Unlike the recent Black Widow, which had a substantial $80 million opening, Shang-Chi is not being released simultaneously on Disney+ via Premier Access, which presumably will mean more people will have to go see the movie in theaters during its 45-day run before heading home, but the question really is “Will they?” Besides Crazy Rich Asians, which did incredibly well among non-Asians, there haven’t been a ton of movies with Asian casts that have done well just due to the fact -- I mean, look at the recent Snake Eyes from Paramount Pictures. It didn’t get nearly as good reviews, but it’s another superhero movie with a mostly Asian cast, and that community didn’t get behind it at all. Maybe we can say the same about Raya but that also was released much earlier in the pandemic.
With that in mind, I do think Shang-Chi is good for a four-day opening between $53 million and $57 million, although I don’t think we can expect this to have the same impact as a Marvel movie with a well-known character or actor in the lead.
This weekend’s four-day box office should look something like this:
1. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (Marvel/Disney) - $55.6 million N/A
2. Candyman (Universal) - $13.2 million -40%
3. Free Guy (20th Century/Disney) - $11 million -16%
4. Paw Patrol: The Movie (Paramount) - $7 million +6%
5. Jungle Cruise (Walt Disney Pictures) - $4.5 million -10%
6. Don’t Breathe 2 (Sony/Screen Gems) - $2 million -30%
7. Respect (MGM) - $1.8 million -20%
8. The Suicide Squad (Warner Bros.) - $1.3 million -35%
9. The Protégé (Lionsgate) - $1.4 million -43%
10. The Night House (Searchlight) - $800k -39%

Hitting Amazon Prime Video on Friday (as well as select theaters in New York and L.A.) is Kay Cannon’s musical CINDERELLA (Amazon), which was originally going to be released theatrically by Sony Pictures in January, but it then became one of the first movies to have its production be shut down by COVID, so everything was delayed, and then Sony just decided to sell it off to Amazon, but considering everything going on, that may have been the wise choice, since I have a feeling more people will see this on Amazon then would have gone out to theaters with COVID, school starting, etc. Either way, you can read my interview with Kay Cannon over at Below the Line.
The movie stars pop star Camila Cabello In the title role of the musical was the brainchild of James Corden, who is no stranger to musicals. In fact, he seems to appear in almost every single one, or is that me? The nice thing is that you already know the story, as that hasn’t changed much, although Cannon definitely gives it a more modern spin in terms of Ella being far more feisty and a truly modern woman despite living in times where women aren’t allowed to do their own thing. Ella wants to be a designer, and she’s already making progress as she sews beautiful dresses in the basement where she’s kept by her stepmother (Idina Menzel) and taunted by her stepsisters (Maddie Baillio and Charlotte Spencer). One day, she meets the Prince Robert (Nicholas Galzitine) in the woods and has such an effect on him that he decides to hold a ball and invite all the women in the land in order to find a princess.
Like I said, pretty much the same story that we’ve seen in so many adaptations and quite a few musicals, and really, what probably will stand out more than anything is how talented Cabello is, considering that this is her first acting role in a major feature, and she kills it. I wouldn’t say that I love all the song choices, but I did love most of the arrangements, and there are so many great standout moments like “Shining Star” performed by Billy Porter as Cinderella’s “Fab G” (replacing and gender-switching her Fairy Godmother) and Menzel’s performance of her own song she wrote for the movie is a definite showstopper.
Obviously, casting the likes of Menzel and Porter means you have a couple ringers, but Minnie Driver is also great and even Pierce Brosnan kind of makes up for his horrific singing performance in Mamma Mia! This time, he gets something more in his range. And James Corden is in it, but it's such a small role that even those who truly hate him don't have enough time to do so.
It’s probably a cliché to say that this Cinderella won’t be for everyone, and I’m sure many critics had their knives out for it sight unseen. Personally, I know tons of fans of musicals and movies like Into the Woods, and yes, the Pitch Perfect movies, who will really enjoy what Kay Cannon and her talented cast and crew have done with the story. Kay Cannon’s Cinderella is a movie that’s more about fun entertainment than anything particularly cerebral, and in days like these, maybe that’s all that is needed sometimes.
There's a ton of other interesting indie films out this week… some of them are even good!

A movie that many (hopefully) will view with interest is Bassam Tariq’s MOGUL MOWGLI (Strand Releasing), co-written by and starring Riz Ahmed, which premiered all the way back at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2020. Besides it being of interest due to Ahmed’s presence, Tariq is also rumored to be directing the new Blade movie for Marvel Studios, starring Mahershala Ali, so many will (hopefully) be checking out this movie for that reason alone. (It certainly grabbed my interest.)
In the movie, Ahmed plays Zaheer who raps under the pseudonym of Zed, but he’s a Pakistani living in London at odds with his parents and the Muslim traditions put upon him. Just as he’s about to go on a major tour that could give his career a much-needed push, he suddenly loses the ability to walk and is diagnosed with a muscular disease that will involve stem cell therapy.
Okay, yes, this is another movie involving Ahmed as a performer who is hit by a debilitating condition much like his Oscar-nominated turn in Sound of Metal, but this is a very different movie that also deals with culture and religion and other things that just had much of an impact on me. Zaheer is told by his doctor that after the procedure, he would be unable to have kids, so he should freeze his sperm, and there’s a scene that I personally experienced when I was told the same before my stem cell transplant.
As much as this is very much a family drama, there’s also an interesting almost horror element to Mogul Mowgli as Zameer is constantly being plagued by hallucinations and nightmares, but there’s also some light humor in the fact that his main competition, another Pakistani rapper named “RPG,” is a bit of an idiot. But this really is Ahmed’s show, and heck, I might go so far to say that I think Ahmed’s performance in this movie is even better than his performance in Sound of Metal if you can believe that.
Mogul Mowgli proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that Riz Ahmed’s Oscar nomination was no fluke. He is clearly one of the best actors we have today, and he also shows that lacking the right material, he’s just going to write his own. It's opening at New York's Film Forum on Friday, and I'm not sure where else.
Tumblr media
Brazilian filmmaker Vicente Amorim’s action-thriller YAKUZA PRINCESS (Magnet) -- which has played a couple recent genre festivals like Fantasia in Montreal -- really should be my kind of movie. Based on the Manga of the same name, it’s set in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where I used to live as a kid, believe it or not, but it’s also one of the largest Japanese communities outside Japan. In this environment comes newcomer Masumi as Akemi, who was orphaned as a child and left in Sao Paulo, but she later learns she’s the heiress to the Yakuza crime syndicate. She ends up meeting a badly scarred-up stranger with amnesia (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) who believes an ancient katana sword might bind their fates.
Like I said, this should be my kind of movie, because I love Yakuza films and crime films set in the world of Japanese crime, and as I said, I lived in Brazil, so that country still hold a place in my heart. Unfortunately, I’ve seen a lot of amazing Yakuza films from the great Takashi Miike, and this one is just so erratic in terms of pacing and tone that it really took me quite some time to really get into it.
Unfortunately, this movie at its core feels like another Kill Bill wannabe where Amorim relies so much on being super-stylish and throwing in lots of fast editing to make up for the lack of originality or any real substance.
The writing in the movie isn’t great, at least at first, but it’s also far too obvious how new and green Masumi is as an actor, because she delivers her lines and swordplay with very little charisma, and Rhys Meyers isn’t much better. In fact, the film’s best parts are the ones in Japanese, but that’s in the second half where the movie slows down considerably. There is the expected amount of gory swordplay and people being shot in the head, but there’s also way too much unnecessary exposition, much of it in bad English.
There’s just no way around that this is a movie that tries to jump on a genre bandwagon that has been handled so much better by Japanese filmmakers, while this just fails to keep the viewer interested beyond its soundtrack and the score by Lucas Marcier and Fabiano Krieger, which is pretty fantastic. Sure, it’s pretty violent and gory, but at times, it relies too much on viewers really only being on board for that. Other times, it feels like a patchwork of elements that don’t necessarily work together but also feels so derivative of so many better films.
Essentially, Yakuza Princess is yet another overly stylish action movie that’s better when everyone is fighting rather than talking. I had a hard time staying interested, and I’m not sure if that would have been exacerbated if I saw this on the big screen vs. a screener. Unfortunately, you'll only get to see on the big screen in certain regions, because it's mainly being released VOD.

Hitting Netflix on Friday after a week at New York’s Paris Theater is Sara Colangelo’s drama WORTH (Netflix), starring Michael Keaton, Stanley Tucci, and Amy Ryan, which premiered all the way back in January 2020 at the Sundance Film Festival. In the movie, Keaton plays Kenneth Feinberg, an opera loving lawyer and college professor who is commissioned to start the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, which has to come up with the amount of money that the families of those who died in the terrorist attacks will receive.
As you can probably expect, this movie is a laugh a minute… no, I’m kidding, this is a well-written and acted, but also often rather dry drama that’s about a serous topic, but it also feels like it comes so late after 9/11 that it doesn’t feel as relevant anymore, even with the anniversary coming up soon.
The movie is very much a spotlight for Keaton, who sports a heavy Massachusetts accent but still delivers a solid performance as the man with the unenviable task of trying to calculate the payouts for the people who lost loved ones in the 9/11 attacks. But Keaton doesn’t just deliver himself, he also brings out the best from everyone else in the cast, not too surprising from Ryan or Tucci, but there are also lots of pleasant surprises, including Shunori Ramathan and some of the actors playing the people who lost family members.
More than anything else, the movie is very much about the excellent script by Max Borenstein (who mostly has written a bunch of Godzilla and King Kong movies, oddly enough), and in that sense, it reminds me of Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight or the recent The Report, which are both solid movies but also very dialogue-driven ensemble dramas. Colangelo does a fine job with the film's pacing, which much have been a difficult task.
The only real problem with Worth is that it's so filled with crying and drama it's pretty hard to take for two hours straight. Basically, it’s one of those very good movies that you really have to be in the right headspace to get through it.

Michelle Civata's THE GATEWAY (Lionsgate) is a crime-thriller set in rural St. Louis with Shea Whigham playing Parker, a social worker who is trying to protect his client, a single mother (Olivia Munn) with a young daughter, whose husband was just paroled from jail with a drugdealer (Frank Grillo) trying to get him back on the payroll.
I wasn't sure about this one at least as it started, even with such a solid cast, which includes Bruce Dern as Park's estranged father, and it certainly started out a bit erratic with some scenes and characters working better than others. What works in the movie's favor is Whigham is such a good actor who rarely gets juicy roles like this one where he can be at the center of the story, and The Gateway shows that maybe this shouldn't be.
Despite a woman as director and co-writer, the whole thing comes off as fairly macho, clearly influenced by filmmakers like Scorses, but the fact that there's heart and real characters at the center of the movie that doesn't offer some degree of action -- gunfights, car chases and such -- does make The Gateway far better than it could have been.
Unfortunately, things start to fall a bit in the last act, although there are some great scenes between Whigham and Dern, and I generally like what the movie is trying to say about family. Because of that, The Gateway ends up being a decent indie crime thriller that doesn't veer too far from others but gives Wigham a long-deserved leading role to show his stuff.
The Gateway will open in select theaters, and be available via Apple TV and other digital platforms Friday and then be available on DVD and Blu-ray on Tuesday, September 7.

Sean King O’Grady’s thriller WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING (IFC Midnight) stars Sierra McCormick as teenager Melissa, who ends up trapped with her family in a house after trying to shelter from a storm… and boy, did this movie remind me of this awful recent movie called John and the Hole that IFC released last month. And this one really isn’t much better, despite starring great actors like Vinessa Shaw and Pat Healy.
Honestly, I have no idea why anyone would read the script by Max Booth III (based on his own novella, no less) and think, “Boy, this would make an interesting movie,” but this is the age we live in where everyone is trying to make something cool and woke for the kiddies, and in this case that comes in the form of Melissa’s goth girlfriend Amy (Lisette Alexis) who shows up (in flashback) as so that they can do some incantations which may be causing all the weirdness. It’s as if the filmmakers thought that throwing in a bit of The Craft might save it.
I probably was most disappointed by Healy, since I’m such a fan of his work, but he isn’t given much to do except rant and rave and yell a lot, and he really comes off like an asshole, which is not a great look for him.
O’Grady throws all sorts of things at the family like a not particularly scary stupid looking rattlesnake that has them screaming horribly and some kind of… werewolf or something? (I don’t know ‘cause we never see it. We just see its tongue which Melissa rips out.) Honestly, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen worse acting, which just makes the family even more annoying.
With a really stupid premise that is barely able to carry a movie, if you’re gonna call your movie We Need to Do Something, then for EFF’s sake, DO SOMETHING! Man, this movie frustrated the hell out of me.
Also out on Friday is the anthology film, YEAR OF THE EVERLASTING STORM (NEON), which features an amazing roster of filmmakers, including David Lowery, director of the recent The Green Knight, Jafar Panahi, Anthony Chen, Laura Poitras (CITIZEN4), Apichatpong Weerasethakul, and others, taking a semi-documentary approach to share their thoughts on living in a pandemic… I watched the Panahi and Chen segments but never got to the rest, but if I do, I'll add my thoughts on the film as a whole when I have a chance. The movie opens at the IFC Center in New York this Friday and then in Los Angeles at the Laemlle Royal next Friday.
I wasn’t able to get to Safy Nebbou’s WHO YOU THINK I AM (Cohen Media), based on the best-selling novel from Camille Laurens, but it stars the great Juliette Binoche, a single mom and middle-aged professor who is ghosted her 20-something lover so she creates a fake Facebook profile for 24-year-old avatar named “Clara” who is friended by her ex’s roommate. This opens at the Quad Cinema in New York on Friday as well as in L.A. at the Landmark, and I hope to get to watch it soon.
Another movie I’ve been looking forward to seeing since it premiered at Sundance but just haven’t found the time is Lyle Mitchell Corbine Jr.’s WILD INDIAN (Vertical), starring the great Michael Greyeyes as a native American man who decades earlier covered up a classmate's murder, but now has to deal with a man who wants vengeance for the secret he's trying to keep as he tries to protect his wife (Kate Bosworth) and boss (Jesse Eisenberg) from that secret. Sounds pretty amazing and man, I wish I could just fit in more movies with everything I have going on right now.
Chad Michael Murray plays the title role in Daniel Farrands' TED BUNDY: AMERICAN BOOGIEMAN (Voltage/Dark Star PIctures), which hits VOD and DVD this Friday, but unlike last week's No Man of God, which deals with Bundy already in prison, it deals with Bundy still on the prowl and the law enforcement agents who eventually brought him down including detective Kathleen McChesney (Holland Roden) and rookie FBI profiler Robert Ressler (Jake Hays). I haven't had a chance to watch this yet, but it would have been nice if they released the two movies in chronological order, no?
A great doc that played at the Tribeca Festival a couple months back and will hit Showtime this Friday is Sacha Jenkins’ BITCHIN’: THE SOUND AND FURY OF RICK JAMES (Showtime), an absolutely fascinating look at the controversial funk and soul star whose catchy dance music of the '70s led to drugs and worse offenses in subsequent years. This is a fantastic doc that I wish I could watch again, but I don't have Showtime. Waugh waugh...
Others that came out this week or weekend:
AFTERLIFE OF THE PARTY (Netflix)
STEEL SONG (Gravitas Ventures)
SAVING PARADISE (Vertical)
Next week, the new horror movie from James Wan, Malignant, as well as Paul Schrader's The Card Counter, which I think might be going wide next week, too.

On November 5, 2020, the series was renewed for a tenth season which will premiere in 2021.[4]
Premise[edit]
Christina Anstead and Tarek El Moussa were married real estate agents in Orange County, California. After the real estate crash in 2008, they began flipping homes in the Orange County area.
In 2011, Tarek asked a friend to help him make an audition tape for HGTV, filming an entire episode of the process of house flipping from start to finish. The audition tape was sent to HGTV and in 2012 the couple[5] was signed to make Flip or Flop.[6]
Christina's expertise is primarily in design, and she works with Tarek to find and renovate homes. She handles the designs of the new spaces and keeps the project on schedule. The show follows them as they buy homes, typically bank-owned, short sales or foreclosures, to renovate and resell.[6]
Hosts[edit]
Personal lives[edit]
Tarek El Moussa and Christina Anstead met while working in the real estate industry. When the housing market plummeted after the October 2008 stock market crash they went from living in a $6,000 per month home to a $700 per month apartment, inspiring them to focus on flipping houses.[7] The couple married in 2009, and their daughter Taylor Reese was born in 2010.[7]
In 2013, a registered nurse and viewer, Ryan Reade, contacted the network after seeing a lump on Tarek's neck during a Flip or Flop marathon. The network put Reade in touch with the producers, and Tarek was diagnosed with testicular cancer and thyroid cancer.[8][9][10] The El Moussas thanked Reade in a video that can be seen on HGTV.com.[11] When doctors recommended radiation treatment, the couple decided to bank Tarek's sperm and try in-vitro fertilization to have a second child.
After a couple of failed attempts, Anstead became pregnant and their son, Brayden James, was born August 20, 2015.[12][13]
In May 2016, the couple separated after an incident at their Southern California home. According to a Yorba Linda police report, Christina called the police after she saw Tarek leave their home with a gun, believing he was suicidal.[14] Tarek was found by the police, and maintained that he was never suicidal and had simply gone for a hike, taking a gun to protect himself from wild animals.[15] In January 2017, Tarek officially filed for divorce from Christina.[16]
Real estate career[edit]
Tarek and Christina ran a real-estate agency, The El Moussa Group, in Orange County, an area with one of the largest foreclosure rates in the country. Tarek, Christina, and their partner Pete De Best, bought their first investment house in Santa Ana for $115,000. After selling the property for a profit of $34,000, the trio split the money and continued to flip houses, expanding their real estate investing business into Arizona and Nevada[6] Following their divorce, The El Moussa Group was dissolved and is now run under the name Tarek and Associates.[17]
In 2018, Tarek and Christina co-founded a real estate education course called Real Estate Elevated.[18]

Flip or Flop Nashville was born after the success of Flip or Flop sent HGTV into overdrive trying to replicate the ratings of the hit series featuring the house-flipping exploits of married (and then divorced) couple Christina Anstead and Tarek El Moussa. Their solution, of course, was to find fresh hosts to headline new shows with a similar format, set in different regions of the country. One of the results of this strategy was Flip or Flop Nashville, starring NFL player-turned-contractor DeRon Jenkins and realtor Page Turner, following their exploits buying rundown properties in Music City to renovate and sell at a profit.
While the El Moussas split up during the run of Flip or Flop (but continued co-starring even after their divorce), Flip or Flop Nashville cut right to the chase by casting a couple that had already split up. “We love to buy, renovate and flip houses — but the craziest part is that we’re exes,” said Turner in HGTV’s announcement for Flip or Flop Nashville. “Thankfully, in business, we work great together.”
HGTV’s strategy was a solid one, and the show’s 2018 debut proved to be another hit for the iconic lifestyle network. Yet even for viewers who’ve seen every episode, there’s much to learn about the untold truth of Flip or Flop Nashville.
Strong ratings led HGTV to renew Flip or Flop Nashville
HGTV viewers clearly enjoyed watching house-flipping exes DeRon Jenkins and Page Turner ply their trade on Flip or Flop Nashville. This was evidenced by the show’s spectacular ratings and the network’s decision to pick the series up for a 12-episode second season.
In a March 2018 press release announcing the pickup, HGTV declared that a total of 9.7 million viewers tuned in to watch the first season, which also managed to garner a “top 5 cable ranking among upscale women 25-54” in its Thursday night time slot. “Page and DeRon’s chemistry, unique work relationship and expertise as house flippers is such compelling television that audiences couldn’t get enough of their dynamic and neither could we,” said HGTV senior VP of programming John Feld.
According to Multichannel News, Flip or Flop Nashville averaged a solid 0.62 rating in the desirable 25 to 54 demographic, representing a 35 percent increase over the previous occupant of its time slot.

Flip or Flop Nashville's DeRon Jenkins had a career in the NFL
Before he began flipping houses on Flip or Flop Nashville, DeRon Jenkins was on a very different career path. After a successful stint in college football with the University of Tennessee, Jenkins was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 1996 as a cornerback, beginning his stint in the NFL. Ahead of the 2000 season, Jenkins signed with the San Diego Chargers, playing there for a year before joining the Tennessee Titans in 2001 for a single season.
He then exited the NFL, and, three years later, Jenkins was picked up by the Arena Football League’s Austin Wranglers, playing for one season before joining the Nashville Kats for two seasons and then retiring from professional football.
It was then that Jenkins embraced the idea of getting into home renovation. “There’s something exciting to me about creating … about driving by a piece of dirt and three-to-six months later, depending on how big the house is, there’s a building there,” Jenkins told the University of Tennessee’s athletic department in an interview. He noted, “Ever since I stopped playing professional football, this is basically what I’ve done.”
How Flip or Flop Nashville's DeRon Jenkins went from football to flipping houses
The transition from professional football to renovating and flipping houses may not seem like a natural progression, but it came organically to Flip or Flop Nashville‘s DeRon Jenkins. In an interview with HGTV, Jenkins revealed it all started when he bought his first home, a fixer-upper in Baltimore, after being drafted by the Ravens. He figured he’d attempt the basement reno all by himself. “I really had no idea what I was doing,” Jenkins recalled, adding, “Before I knew it, I renovated this home.”
After he retired from pro football, he told the Knoxville News Sentinel, “It kind of all came back to me.” That led him to buy a house in Nashville and renovate it, a project that went so well he decided to go pro. During his first two years, the fledgling contractor figured he worked on between 15 and 20 homes, and he launched his own contracting company, DY Construction. “I honestly didn’t make a ton of money, but I always call it like my schooling ’cause I feel like I sort of paid for it, but I didn’t lose money,” he admitted. “But I learned a lot. I learned the business.”
These are the Flip or Flop Nashville stars' secrets to working successfully with an ex
When realtor Page Turner and football player-turned-contractor DeRon Jenkins ended their relationship, Turner told Us Weekly, the split was amicable. “We dated for a long time, but we still remained friends,” she explained. “We didn’t have this huge blow up where we just stopped speaking and all that drama.” However, they did go their separate ways — for a while, at least. Turner noted that she and Jenkins had to take time apart from one another for a few years before they were okay working together again.
As Jenkins added, it all boils down to the fact that they legitimately hold each other in high regard. “The secret is respect and trust. We respect each other,” said Jenkins. “We feel like we both are at the top of our craft. We work well together as far as trusting.” The Flip or Flop Nashville star explained, “I know what she’s gonna do, she knows what I’m gonna do. Our expectations of each other are very realistic. We make it work.”
Flip or Flop Nashville star Page Turner's split from DeRon Jenkins was 'traumatic'
While DeRon Jenkins and Page Turner have put their past romantic relationship behind them in their house-flipping partnership on Flip or Flop Nashville, their split was not as drama-free as some HGTV viewers might believe. In a candid interview with People, the former couple admitted their the breakup was not without its pain and suffering. As Jenkins explained, there “was some time between” when they split up and when they reconnected, with Turner interjecting, “After the traumatic break up, yes, there was time in between. Listen, I have stories.”
Jenkins admitted that the breakup was equally rough for him. “I would say so. We were together for like five years,” he said. “Are there ever really any good breakups?” Turner asked. Would either want to give their romance another shot? When posed that question by People, both exclaimed, “No!”
While their experience as a couple may have ended poorly, it did allow them to discover the real strength and purpose they could bring to a business partnership with each other. “One thing we did well,” Turner told People, “was make money together.”
Flip or Flop Nashville's DeRon Jenkins is one of People's 'Sexiest Handymen Alive'
As a former NFL cornerback with the Baltimore Ravens and a popular HGTV television personality, DeRon Jenkins has a few accomplishments under his belt about which he can rightfully boast. In 2018, People gave him one more when, in its annual “Sexiest Man Alive” issue, Jenkins was named as one of the magazine’s “Sexiest Handymen Alive.”
Other 2018 honorees included Fixer Upper‘s Chip Gaines, Trading Spaces‘ Carter Oosterhouse and Brett Tutor, and Property Brothers‘ Drew and Jonathan Scott.
Speaking with People, Jenkins admitted that all that sexiness doesn’t come without some serious effort, revealing that he hits the gym five times a week. “My goal is that when people look at me, they say, ‘Well, I can see that he used to play professional football,'” the Flip or Flop Nashville star quipped. His advice for handymen who don’t manage to achieve that particular degree of sexiness is to try to impress using one’s skills with three basic tools: “a screwdriver, a flashlight and a hammer.” He said, “You can do a lot with those things.”

How the Flip or Flop Nashville stars responded to Nashville's real estate market cooling down
According to a 2020 study, Nashville was ranked one of America’s hottest real estate markets. However, by then, the market had cooled considerably compared to a few years earlier, as inventory lessened while cautious buyers waited for things to pick back up. Speaking with the Los Angeles Times in January 2019, Flip or Flop Nashville stars Page Turner and DeRon Jenkins revealed how they were handling the market trend at the time.
“We got spoiled in Nashville having always had a pretty loose market,” admitted Turner. “Now that it’s so tight I had to go back to literally calling people to ask their aunts, cousins, mothers — anybody in their family — who might need to get rid of a house. We had to go old-school and find the pocket listings, use wholesalers, be unconventional.”
Turner also shared the qualities she looks for in a home when it comes to flipping potential. “I always find properties that are a hot mess. Every single time,” Turner revealed. “[Jenkins] shakes his head like, ‘What in the world is this?’ And I say, ‘I don’t know, you figure it out.’ I frustrate him to no end.”
Flip or Flop Nashville debuted a digital companion series
In addition to showcasing Page Turner and DeRon Jenkins flipping houses for profit on Flip or Flop Nashville, HGTV invited fans of the show to enjoy a whole other side of the ex-couple in a companion series, Flip or Flop Nashville: Ride With Me. In a series of brief episodes — all between five and ten minutes in length — Turner and Jenkins took viewers into some of Nashville’s hippest neighborhoods and engaged in some unique activities.
For fans of the show, Ride With Me offered much to enjoy. For example, one episode found the “rhythmically challenged” Turner learning some hip-hop jitterbug dance moves at Nashville’s Millennium Dance Complex. Additional episodes followed them as they took kickboxing lessons, learned how to throw axes, joined tourists on a Nashville bus tour, and attempted the art of standup comedy at the city’s Zanies Comedy Club, with Jenkins’ pal, comedian T.C. Cope, offering the former NFL player a few pointers for performing a standup set. Jenkins, probably wisely, elected to stay in the audience and leave the comedy to Cope — maybe next time!
The stars of Flip or Flop Nashville shared their top home improvement tips
When it comes to tips and tricks for attaining the biggest financial gain from a home renovation, Flip or Flop Nashville‘s DeRon Jenkins and Page Turner shared their secrets with readers of Yahoo! Finance.
One of the key strategies that Jenkins swears by when undertaking a reno with a view to flip is to lighten up — literally. “Some of the homes are a little bit smaller, so we use a lot of the white or brighter colors,” he explained of how light-colored interior paint “gives the house pop.” He noted, “It gives the house a cool feature. Kind of a contemporary feature that people really like right now.”
Both Turner and Jenkins agree that, when spending money, you can never go wrong by spending it on the master bath. “Women like me really still want a beautiful bathroom to adorn themselves in, so I love making bathrooms beautiful,” Turner explained, and Jenkins agreed wholeheartedly. “The women are coming into the house, they are looking for that master bathroom,” he confirmed. “And that’s who decides who’s going to buy the house.”
The surprising way Page Turner wound up on Flip or Flop Nashville
While Page Turner and DeRon Jenkins have been watched by millions on HGTV’s Flip or Flop Nashville, neither of them prepared for a career as television hosts. In an interview with Grit Daily, Turner revealed the unorthodox way she and her ex-beau came to be stars of the HGTV hit. At the time, Turner was a single mother struggling to make ends meet when she received an email sharing that HGTV was looking to cast couples in a new real estate show, with the email envisioning the husband as contractor and the wife as realtor.
Being that she was single, Turner would seem to be out of the running. Instead, she thought outside the box, pitching the network on her idea for a show about an ex-couple who work together flipping houses. “My idea wasn’t anything the production company/network was looking for, but I thought I would shoot my shot!” Turner explained. “So I wrote a short treatment about my ex-boyfriend … and I realized that we ‘worked well together’ — we just didn’t ‘work well together.'” She received a response the next day, and the seed for Flip of Flop Nashville was planted.
Flip or Flop Nashville is one of many Flip or Flop spinoffs
The success of HGTV’s original Flip or Flop speaks for itself, and its popularity can be measured in the sheer volume of spinoffs it’s spawned. In addition to DeRon Jenkins and Page Turner starring in Flip or Flop Nashville, the series has also spun off with Christina on the Coast, featuring the solo renovation adventures of the former Mrs. Tarek El Moussa, Christina Anstead, as well as several regional variations.
Tumblr media
One of these shows is Flip or Flop Vegas, which follows contractor/MMA fighter Bristol Marunde and his realtor/designer wife Aubrey, who undertake renovations in Sin City. There’s also Flip or Flop Atlanta, in which spouses Ken and Anita Corsini bring Southern homes back to their former glory in the Georgia capital. Also on the menu is Flip or Flop Fort Worth, with husband-and-wife duo Andy and Ashley Williams tackling some challenging renos, Texas style! As if that weren’t enough, HGTV also brought viewers Chicago Flippers, which was apparently intended to be a part of thefranchise under the original title Flip or Flop Chicago.
How being on HGTV changed Flip or Flop Nashville star DeRon Jenkins' life
DeRon Jenkins had a certain degree of celebrity during his NFL career as a cornerback for the Baltimore Ravens, San Diego Chargers, and Tennessee Titans. Yet according to an interview with the athletic department of the University of Tennessee, that was nothing compared to what he’s experienced since Flip or Flop Nashville hit the air.
“The cool thing about HGTV is it crosses all ages, genders and races,” Jenkins said. “I’ve had nine- or 10-year old kids shout at me that they watch my show. I’ve had 55-year-old women come up to me while I’m traveling in the airport. It’s a show that really crosses every boundary.”
Starring in an HGTV series, Jenkins explained, has “been a cool experience,” but he admitted that it’s “definitely hard work.” According to Jenkins, his role in the house-flipping process is similar to that of being the coach of a football team. “I’m constantly managing, scheduling people and meeting with people to ultimately accomplish a common goal,” he explained.

Here's what the Flip or Flop Nashville stars say to do to add extra value to a home
DeRon Jenkins and Page Turner of HGTV’s Flip or Flop Nashville dropped by the Today show to share the “Flip Tips” they believe can add extra value to a home during a renovation. As the duo told Today‘s Hoda Kotb and guest host Dean Cain, one suggestion is to create a “pass-through,” which Turner described as a great way to open a walled-off kitchen to an adjacent family room. “If you can’t take down an entire wall, you can just add a pass-through,” she explained. “It opens up the space, it gives natural light…”
Another suggestion they offered was to reverse trim color as a way of brightening up interior spaces, painting the walls a brighter color and using a darker hue on the trim. “What’s great is that for about $25 for a can of paint, you can add a value of $3,000,” Turner declared.
Kitchen cabinetry, the pair added, is also an area where a little investment can go a long way. Page suggested “two-tone cabinets,” with lighter-colored cabinets on top and a darker color on the bottom. “A little bit of accent there,” said Turner.
What the Flip or Flop Nashville stars said about Tarek El Moussa and Christina Anstead's split
As fans of the original Flip or Flop already know, Flip or Flop Nashville‘s DeRon Jenkins and Page Turner aren’t the only ex-couple with a house-flipping show on HGTV. In fact, original Flip or Flop couple Tarek El Moussa and Christina Anstead made headlines when they announced they were separating, yet they continued to work together flipping houses on their HGTV hit.
While Jenkins and Turner admit the circumstances of their breakup are “a little different” from that of the Flip or Flop couple, they weighed in on El Moussa and Anstead during an interview with Us Weekly. “I think they’re on the right path. They have faith and they respect each other,” Turner told the magazine. “And I think one thing they do is they keep their kids first — from what I see and read. So I think that will keep their path straight.”
Flip Or Flop Tennessee
As for their own relationship, Jenkins and Turner, who both declared themselves to be single at the time, were happy to maintain things as is. “I think we’re in such a great place right now,” added Turner. “We work really well together.”

Rafael Nadal produced a vintage performance on Sunday to remain the king of the clay in Paris. The Spaniard’s flawless 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 win over Novak Djokovic brought him his 13th French Open title.
Perhaps more significantly though, Nadal’s win equalled Roger Federer’s record of 20 Grand Slam titles, the last of which the Swiss won at the 2018 Australian Open.
“Winning here means everything to me,” Nadal said on court straight after his win. “I don’t think today about equalling Roger’s record of 20 Grand Slams. For me, today is a Roland Garros victory. Roland Garros means everything to me… many of the important moments of my career have been here. The love story I have with this city and this court is unforgettable.”
The French Open usually starts in late May but was postponed until late September due to the coronavirus pandemic. And Nadal had some words of encouragement for the world’s fight against the virus.
“I want to send a message to all the people in the world,” Nadal said. “We are going through a tough moment with this virus, but everyone stay positive and we will beat it together.”

Poland’s Iga Swiatek has made history. The 19-year-old, who did not drop a set throughout the tournament, beat fourth seed Sofia Kenin 6-4 6-1 to win the 2020 French Open.
In doing so, the world number 54, became the first ever Grand Slam singles champion from Poland, the youngest French Open winner since 1992 and the ninth first-time champion in the past 14 Grand Slams.

The race was to be held next March, but organizers said Friday that the race would now take place on October 17 instead, two months after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, another event which was pushed to July 2021 due to the pandemic.
The organizers said they were “carefully reviewing plans that will adhere to the situation surrounding COVID-19,” and that they’ll do everything in their powers to “deliver a safe and secure event.”
Around 38,000 participants from around the world were to take part.

Özil not named in Arsenal’s Europa League squad
Mesut Ozil’s ostracization at Arsenal went to a new level Thursday when he was left off the team’s Europa League squad list for this season.
The 31-year-old Ozil hasn’t played for Arsenal since football started in June amid the coronavirus pandemic, leaving his future at the club in question.
Asked recently why Ozil _ one of the club’s highest-paid players, reportedly at more than $20 million a year, was out of favor, Arteta said: “The team is evolving, you can see the level they are achieving.”
Mercedes team member tests positive for COVID-19
Formula One champions Mercedes reported on Thursday that a member of their team had tested positive for COVID-19 but a spokesman said drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas were clear.
“We can confirm that a team member has tested positive,” said a spokesman. “This has been handled and is being handled in line with FIA protocols, working closely with the FIA,” he added, without giving further details.
Six times world champion Hamilton leads Bottas in the championship by 44 points after 10 races.
Lack of fans factor in ‘crazy’ football results
Wolverhampton Wanderers captain Conor Coady believes the absence of crowds at stadiums is a major factor behind the surprising scorelines seen in the Premier League this season.
“Honestly, they are mad, the scorelines,” said Coady. “It’s a tough one to put your finger on, it really is. You look at it at the start of the season, some teams are ahead of others in terms of fitness, in terms of having a pre-season.

Jadon Sancho in hot water with Dortmund and England
Borussia Dortmund have announced that they are “in close contact with the English FA and the representatives of the national team,” following the publication of pictures showing Jadon Sancho at a party in London.

Sancho missed BVB’s last two games due to “throat infection” and the club are reportedly decidedly unimpressed with the 20-year-old’s decision to attend.
Meanwhile, there have also been calls for Sancho, Abraham and other England national team members in attendance to be dropped for the upcoming internationals.

US soccer team forfeits match over alleged homophobia
San Diego Loyal players walked off the pitch in a second division game against Phoenix Rising after a homophobic comment was allegedly aimed at midfielder Collin Martin, who is openly gay.
San Diego, who are managed and owned by former US international Landon Donovan, had already forfeited a match against LA Galaxy’s reserves the previous week after midfielder Elijah Martin was the victim of alleged racist abuse.
“We went through a really hard incident last week in the LA match,” said Donovan, who also made a handful of Bundesliga appearances for Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich. “We made a vow to ourselves, to our community, to our players, to the club, to USL, that we would not stand for bigotry, homophobic slurs, things that don’t belong in our game.”
Despite leading 3-1 at half-time, San Diego thus forfeited a chance of reaching the playoffs. Opponents Phoenix Rising said the alleged perpetrator “vehemently denied” the allegations.
Bundesliga clubs criticize international matches
Ahead of next week’s international break, several Bundesliga club bosses have issued scathing criticism of FIFA and the German Football League (DFL) over the issue of sending their players on international duty in regions considered coronavirus risk areas, resulting in quarantine upon their return.
In September, for instance, Hertha Berlin striker Krzysztof Piatek had to quarantine for five days after playing for Poland in Bosnia, and missed Hertha’s German Cup defeat to Eintracht Braunschweig. At the time, FIFA had relaxed regulations obliging clubs to release players for internationals in regions considered COVID-19 hot-spots, but no such steps have been taken this time.
“We learned in September that we, the clubs, are left high and dry,” said Hertha boss Michael Preetz. “We release our players, we pay our players and, in the case of Krzysztof, we were left footing the bill. Ultimately, nobody was prepared to fight our corner. We realized that we can’t count on any help from the DFL or FIFA.”
“For me, it’s absurd to send players to risk areas,” added Augsburg’s Stefan Reuter. “It is FIFA’s responsibility either to postpone these matches or guarantee that players don’t need to quarantine when they return.”
Germany face Ukraine in the Nations League in Kiev on October 10, but local authorities in Germany have already stated that players will be exempt from quarantine regulations given the security and isolation measures in place in the Ukrainian capital.
