Rings showing clasped hands ("fede", Italian meaning "faith") first appeared in Roman times when they represented a legal contract. Symbolizing the union between two people, gimmel rings comprise two or three interlocking bands held together by a pin and were commonly used in 16th and 17th century England to commemorate a betrothal or marriage. Over time, the designs merged and the fede gimmel rings evolved to incorporate three conjoined bands with the center band featuring a symbolic motif – an anchor, a cross or a heart. A cute find, this antique late Victorian reverse carved intaglio Rock Crystal painting of a black terrier with a bell on his collar would be the loveliest gift for the Dog lover. Likely previously a stick pin it has a really nice double band and feels really familiar and comfortable on the finger. A novelty during the Victorian period, 'Essex' Crystal pieces are formed from a Rock Crystal cabochon (a polished dome of Rock Crystal with a flat base), an image or motif is then reverse carved into the flat base, and then painted, to give the impression of a three dimensional object or image encapsulated in the cabochon when viewed from above. The Crystal measures half an inch across and it is mounted in a beaded bezel of 9ct yellow Gold.
