LVIV, Ukraine—One of the most profound images to come from the siege of Sarajevo was the stark image of the cellist Vedran Smailovic playing Tomaso Albinoni’s Adagio in G Minor every day at noon, sitting elegantly and defiantly in black tie in the midst of the wreckage of Bosnia’s National and University Library.
The library had been bombed by Bosnian Serbs on Aug. 25, 1992, destroying 90 percent of its 1.5 million volumes of precious books, including rare Ottoman editions. A 32-year-old librarian was killed that night as she desperately tried to save books. The scene of book pages burning and ashes rising in the air was an indelible image of the cruelty of war and a symbol of cultural destruction.
The beautiful, Moorish-inspired City Hall building, called Vijecnica, which housed the library, was more than a place to find books—it was a potent symbol of multicultural ethnicity. That, above all, is what the Serbs tried to destroy: the cultural ethos of what made up Bosnia.
A similar phenomenon is happening now in Ukraine. Russia seeks to destroy Ukrainian identity, and that includes monuments, libraries, theaters, art, and literature.
In the many conflicts I have covered, art and literature are essential to morale—to civilians struggling to live moment by moment through the attempted destruction of their country, as well as to the soldiers fighting on the front lines to defend their culture and history. It is also the basis of historical memory: what is remembered, what is forever kept.
Early this month, shortly before Russia began its latest wave of terror in Ukraine—featuring missile and Iranian-made kamikaze drone attacks on civilians in Kyiv, missile strikes on civilian infrastructure in Lviv, and other assaults elsewhere in the country—I went to one of the most remarkable literary festivals I have ever attended: the three-day Lviv BookForum.
Lviv, in western Ukraine, is a glorious baroque city that over the years has been part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Poland, and the Soviet Union, as well as having been besieged by the Nazis. Throughout it all, this wondrous city has endured.
The idea to have a literary festival in the midst of a vicious war is representative of Ukrainians’ defiance. Among the many who gathered in Lviv to attend in solidarity were Ukrainian writers such as the former political prisoner Stanislav Aseyev and Diana Berg, who lost her home twice in Mariupol; the Ukrainian novelist and human rights activist Victoria Amelina; and the British barrister and author Philippe Sands, who wrote one of the most powerful books on the origins of genocide, East West Street.
Also attending were the historian Misha Glenny; the disinformation expert Peter Pomerantsev and his father, Igor Pomerantsev, a dissident Soviet poet; the French American novelist Jonathan Littell; the award-winning nonfiction writer Nataliya Gumenyuk; and two extraordinary British doctors, Henry Marsh and Rachel Clarke, who came to Ukraine to bear witness to the atrocities. There were many others: philosophers, bloggers, activists.
It was an interesting mix of cultures, but the stars of the event were by far the Ukrainian writers, who read and told stories with courage and brutal honesty. The literary scholar Oleksandr Mykhed told the audience that on Feb. 24, the day of the Russian invasion, he realized: “You could not protect your family from a rifle with your poems. You could not hit someone with a book—you could try, but it won’t work with the crazy occupiers from Moscow. I lost belief in the power of culture, lost interest in reading.”
Shortly after that realization, Mykhed enrolled in the army; a week later, he lost his family home to a bomb.
But even in Lviv—relatively peaceful until the recent attacks—the war was not far away. In between sessions, we wandered the cobblestoned streets, passing the historic Garrison Church of Sts. Peter and Paul, honoring the fallen soldiers. One night, on my way home from dinner, I saw a crowd of young people gathered around a guitar player, who was belting out the Ukrainian national anthem. It was powerfully emotional. Everyone stood with their hands on their hearts, under an enormous full moon, singing at the top of their lungs in Ukrainian: “Ukraine’s freedom has not perished, nor has her glory. … Upon us, fellow Ukrainians, fate shall smile on us once more.”
The next day, one of my fellow panelists was Amelina, the Ukrainian novelist and author of the books Fall Syndrome and Dom’s Dream Kingdom. I first met Amelina in Berlin at a conference for human rights monitors. Since the war started, she stopped writing novels and started investigating war crimes. In her backpack, she carries tourniquets—her work often takes her to front lines throughout the country.
“While Russian occupiers try to destroy the Ukrainian elite, including writers, artists, and civil society leaders, the free world needs to hear and amplify the Ukrainian voices,” she said. “Then we have a chance not only to defend Ukraine’s independence this time in history but also truly implement the ‘never again’ slogan for the continent.”
Amelina told me of a recent visit to Izyum, in eastern Ukraine, after the Ukrainian Armed Forces had liberated it. She met with the parents of Volodymyr Vakulenko, a Ukrainian children’s book author who was abducted from his house during the Russian occupation.
Volodymyr’s father mentioned to Amelina that before being abducted, his son hid his war diary under the cherry tree in the garden. Amelina helped the grieving father dig the diary up and later brought it to the Kharkiv Literary Museum.
“I chose the museum because it holds the first editions and manuscripts of my favorite writers executed by the Soviet regime in the 1930s,” she said. “I hope Volodymyr Vakulenko is still alive and his diary [doesn’t] start the collection of manuscripts of another generation of Ukrainian writers murdered by the empire.”
During one of our panels, we were joined on Zoom by a 27-year-old poet named Yaryna Chornohuz, who called in from the front line. As well as being a gifted writer, Chornohuz is a reconnaissance soldier and combatant in the 140th Reconnaissance Battalion of the Ukrainian Marine Corps.
“My position now is a combat medic of the reconnaissance combat group,” she said. “I’ve been on the front line since 2019. Now it’s my 14th month of rotation in [the] Luhansk and Donetsk region.”
She proudly told us that her unit took part in the defense of Severodonetsk, Bakhmut, and Popasna. In March, she took part in engagements in villages north of Mariupol. Now she’s participating in a counteroffensive on Lyman and Yampil.
Listening to her, I thought of how when I first went to cover a war, long ago in Bosnia, I carried with me a pocket-sized book of poems by the World War I poets Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, and Robert Graves. Somehow, the poignancy and pain of the poetry helped me understand the brutality of war in a more profound way.
In Lviv, I felt an intense solidarity among the writers who had gathered. “Intellectuals from all over the world coming together in Ukraine to discuss how justice and truth can prevail is already part of the solution,” Amelina told me.
That night, some of us boarded an overnight train to Kyiv in high spirits, carrying bags of fruit and bottles of whiskey. We arrived after dawn in the capital, unaware that we would soon witness Russian President Vladimir Putin’s wrath: missile attacks on Lviv, Kyiv, and other Ukrainian cities. We were sent to bomb shelters, waiting it out with locals along with their children and pets. Plates of cookies and tea were brought out; people pulled out books and computers. A seminar that was meant to take place in the hotel upstairs carried on in a corner of the parking garage that was our new home for the time being.
And I kept thinking of something that Mykhed had told listeners only a few days before in Lviv. “More talented writers of the next generations will take this raw material and make a beautiful novel about it,” he said. “But being in the center of the hurricane, you just try to grab the tiniest moments of your grief, the tiniest moments of your scream.”

Called Jebel Tariq (Mountain of Tariq in Arabic) by its Moorish conquerors (Tariq ibn Ziyad was the leader of the Umayyad force that crossed over the Strait of Gibraltar, consolidating his troops at the Rock before conquering Visigothic Hispania in the early 700s), control of Gibraltar was passed around before finally being ceded to the British in 1713 during the War of the Spanish Succession.  It is a hugely strategic port over which to wield control, needless to say, which is why the Spanish continue to lay claim to a territory that, let’s be frank, doesn’t make much sense as British - but then, colonialism rarely makes sense from certain perspectives.  The vast majority of Gibraltarians (or Llanitos, as they call themselves in Llanito, the form of Andalusian Spanish spoken in Gibraltar that incorporates large numbers of English loanwords, plus some Genoese, Maltese, and Portuguese) population remains true to the Queen, however, and as of the 1967 and 2002 referendums regarding sovereignty over the Rock have shown, that’s unlikely to change any time soon....[Also, when the Trivial Pursuit question rolls around about where in mainland Europe you can find native monkeys (in this case, Barbary macaques).........remember this post.  You’re welcome.]

Monday Art by Murals Artist Yip Yew Chong.
Singapore River 4 (2017)
"Imagine how Singapore would look like... If we had not demolished the many Victorian and Moorish buildings that once decorated Collyer Quay, Fullerton Square and Raffles Place, If we had not flattened Mount Wallich, Scotts Hill and reclaimed Telok Ayer Bay, If we had not cleared all the boats off Boat Quay. Lau Pat Sat would be jutting out into the sea. Raffles Place would look like a square in Europe. Tan Kim Seng Fountain would be the icon of Fullerton Square. Guns would guard the shores at the tip of Battery Road I imagine the grandeur of the old dames that preceded Fullerton Building and the Victoria Concert hall I imagine the mighty Pinnacles@Duxton towering above everyone I imagine the Merlion looking into the blue horizon I imagine the enchanting city centre Singapore once had"
***
Back in March/April Yip Yew Chong had a few exhibitions across Singapore. The first one was at ArtPorters gallery with some of his mural inspired art and then 2 exhibitions back to back, one at the Substation, followed by one in the hotel Sofitel. Those pieces were slightly different than his murals but still very intrigued and detailed paintings. You could lose yourself in front of each of his canvas. I will post one each Monday (it will last until the end of the year!!! Yeah one less post to think about 😉)

Whitehall - Liz Duffy Adams et al.
We Ride Upon Sticks - Quan Barry
King Javan’s Year - Katherine Kurtz [q: why do I keep reading these? why does everyone talk like they work for Deloitte? and here’s the thing: so Rome and Jerusalem both exist, although no one ever goes there, as do Islam and Judaism (and Latin, Arabic, and Gaelic), there are adjectives like “Celtic” and “Moorish,” there’s clearly something playing the role of Mediterranean trade routes and given that it exists - presuming Rome and Jerusalem are where we left them - I see no reason not to assume it’s the Mediterranean, but we also have fantasy not-quite-Catholicism in our fantasy British Isle-y peninsula (subcontinent?), butted up right next to the fantasy Persian Gulf, which is next door to fantasy France, which shares a border with evil fantasy Byzantium (except when it’s evil fantasy Russia), which has some fantasy Eastern Orthodoxy going on and besides all my serious concerns about the geography I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO THE POPE.]
Wanted, a Gentleman - KJ Charles
The Desire for Dearborne - V.B. Kildaire

The Bastard Prince - Katherine Kurtz [a: it’s because they flip the Canon Error; Apply Fanfic? switch really decisively, even though I don’t]
Jackdaw - KJ Charles [I nearly quit on this during the first sex scene, but I’m glad I didn’t: magic! pining! the fresh sea air! learning to live with your formerly(?)-felonious flying ex(?)-boyfriend! all in all, a delight]

Invitation to the Dance - Tamara Allen
Land of Mist and Snow - Debra Doyle and James MacDonald [I’m not going to claim this is good, and the part where a Mayan priest with no personality besides evil is sacrificing people for the Confederacy is definitely dicey, but I will tell you that it features a 19th-century abolitionist vestal virgin stripping down on the quarterdeck to commune with the spirit of a battleship and first of all, what???, and second, I was 100% there for it]
Frankissstein - Jeanette Winterson
Mourning Raga - Ellis Peters
The Apple-Tree Throne - Premee Mohamed
The Weight of Ink - Rachel Kadish
The Downstairs Girl - Stacey Lee

(Elizabeth anon) Also re: Golden Age of Empire. Tbh even though I know they mean it in a bit of a different (more middle ages/classic style empires) I still think the end of 19th/beginning of 20th century was the greatest era for the British Empire (albeit the Second one, if we go by before/after losing the American colonies) and in my head THE monarch I'll always associate with imperialism (even the word came to be at around that time I think) is Victoria.
Oh yeah, for sure! Like I said, the association of Elizabeth I with the ‘Golden Age’ of Empire is more myth than actual reality. While trade and exploration did boom during her reign, with famous explorers like Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Francis Drake making their travels to the New World, and English trade with the Middle East and North Africa in particular was growing exponentially (a lot of black and Moorish people came to live and work in England, many of them at Elizabeth’s own court), the so-called English or British empire as we know it wasn’t founded or even cultivated until after her death.
The monarch of Empire and imperialism IS undoubtedly Queen Victoria, at least in the British sense. It’s when the terms imperial and imperialism entered the vocabulary of Britain, and it’s the period that most people associate with the British Empire in general. Other countries had empires way before then, notably Spain and Portugal as well as France and the Netherlands, but the late 19th century is the pinnacle of the British Empire, with all the horrors - and achievements - that it brought. It was a great era, but by no means a bloodless - or an innocent - one.

Mysterious Case of Mai Kolachi (to be read as My Karachi)
Tumblr media
City by the sea, city of lights, a city which welcomes everyone regardless of their race, background or any cultural differences with open arms is also known as Karachi. I was born and raised in Karachi, this is My City and my love for the city will never dimish.
I recently moved away from my city, having said that, I have developed a new kind of love for this city. A sort of love which makes me think of all the things which make Karachi so unique. Karachi literally has so many colors, and shades to it and the most fascinating thing is that they change with how you are feeling about it on that very day which makes it mysterious in a very interesting way.
Recently I went back home and explored Karachi from a new lens, you can say that it was more of a touristy lens which was on all the time. I was looking at things and places from an angle which I had never seen before. Karachi originally was a small fisherman village settles by the Bloch tribes from Balochistan and Makran. Their first settlement was near the delta of the Indus River which they named as Kolachi village. The original community yet Inhabitat the area on a small island of Abdullah Goth situated near Karachi Port. The well-known neighbourhood 'Mai Kolachi' of Karachi which still remains the original name of the City.
Tumblr media
The British recognized the importance of the city as the trading post. So they captured the city and Sindh province. Fast forward, the 1980s, the 90s, and 2000s; Karachi is the role model city for Pakistan, and it continues to grow with the current economic boom. Pakistan got its independence from the British rule in August 1947, yet you can still feel the essence the British left behind. The buildings, streets, old markets still have the old look and feel. Though a lot of these buildings are in a dilapidated condition, then too, it almost feels like each one of them is telling a story about their roots and history.
Bohri Bazaar:
It is one of the oldest marketplaces of Karachi, located in the heart of the city. It was established before independence, which makes some of these shops more than 100 years old. My mother and I can spend hours at this bazaar. Bohri Bazaar is famous for having everything in one market; more like a one-stop-shop. My mother loves getting her kitchen utensils from here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eduljee Dinshaw Charitable Dispensary:
Tumblr media
Upon my visit to the most famous visit to the Bohri bazaar, I saw an old dispensary by the name of 'Eduljee Dinshaw' charitable dispensary. It is said to be one of the most beautiful building built in Italian style. It was designed by James Strachan, The Municipality engineer at that time and was commissioned by the well-known Zoraistran philanthropist Eduljee Dinshaw. This dispensary is situated in the heart of old Karachi and was opened for public in 1882. It is still being used and provides health facilities to the ones who visit this place.
Some other buildings in the surrounding areas:
Empress Market:
Tumblr media
Constructed during the peak of the British Raj in the subcontinent during 1884-1889, Empress Market is named after the then Empress of Britain, Queen Victoria. This market is the midst of Saddar's hustle-bustle where local shopkeepers have stores which sell absolutely everything you can think of.
St Patrick’s Cathedral:
Tumblr media
Constructed in 1845, The St. Patrick's Cathedral is the headquarters of Karachi’s Roman Catholic Archidose. This Cathedral stands uniquely-tall against other Anglo-Mughal style designs of the city. The striking but straightforward exterior is accompanied with lovely wooden interiors and stained glass windows typical of many cathedrals across the world.
Random buildings in Bohri Bazaar:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nimco Corner:
Tumblr media
Of course if you’re a foodie like me, you can never ignore Nimco Corner. It was established in the 1950s and sells a wide verity of savoury and sweet snacks. their beef samoosas are one of the best in town.
Jan’s Broast:
Tumblr media
Jan’s broast is Pakistan’s take on southern fried chicken. The flavour is still the same as it was when it opened back in the 1970s.
Paper Market in Pakistan Chowk:
Tumblr media
Despite the heavy traffic associated with it, Pakistan Chowk remains the go-to place for wedding planners, event managers, students etc. where you can get paper at a reasonable price.
Jamah Masjid Jinnah:
Tumblr media
Built-in 1947, this mosque was built by Muhammad Ali Jinnah trust foundation and was named after the founder of Pakistan, also known as Quaid e Azam (father of the nation).
Pioneer Book House:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pioneer Books was built on M.A. Jinnah Road, in 1948. Unmodified to this day, the bookstore has been declared a protected site by the Archeology Department of Sindh. Pioneer Books remains a symbol of independent thought and intellectual reflection in Karachi, a microcosmic representation of the city’s rich cultural history.
Quaid’s Mausoleum:
Tumblr media
Completed in 1970, the final resting place of Pakistan’s founding father, Quaid-e-Azam M.A Jinnah, is a marbled building situated inside a 53-hectare park that today serves both as a national monument and a place of recreation and relaxation. Each wall of the square structure has an entrance decorated with curved Moorish arches and copper grills. The design of the mausoleum was inspired by the Uzbek Samanid Mosque.
TDF Ghar:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aiming to promote learning spaces in Karachi, The Dawood Foundation (TDF) recently opened the gates of a restored house on MA Jinnah Road that was built in 1930. Now converted into a public space, the building, named ‘TDF Ghar’, provides antique surroundings with archaic paraphernalia to the visitors who come to socialise and share ideas.
TDF Ghar also offers a scenic view of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s mausoleum from its rooftop where one can sit, relax and enjoy the view.
My Karachi has to offer many exciting places where you can learn about its rich culture and history. Besides this, one can go on a food glore and never get disappointed.
Tumblr media
Motichoor Laddo at Sohny Sweets, Defence
Tumblr media
Halwa Puri at Fresco, Saddar
Tumblr media
Bun Kabab at Rehman Burger, Tariq Road
Tumblr media
Kachoris at Passport Office, Saddar
Karachi is my pride and my home where my heart resides forever no matter where I am. Karachi is an exciting city which is growing in every way you can think of be it population, economy, job market, or giving love. To a large extent, Karachiites redefine resilience – where people’s lives do go on despite everything. This is what Karachi means to me – Karachi is love; it has a heart of gold. This city is for everyone who can say they own Karachi – for only they will understand what I am trying to say.

I'm doing reading on Victoria's ancest. Where did you find Charlotte had maybe a black grandparent? The only fringe writer (maro vlades) who claims (not a myriad of historians) such was that a 12th century possible ancestress of charlotte was possibly black. In a few of her paintings she looks maybe with a little nonwhite blood, but she generally looks...white. Like her parents, grandparents, great--grandparents. And as the words "negroid" and "caucasioid" are based in scientific racism idk
CONT. Also Mario Vlades also claims Peter Ustinov, Heather Locklear, the Medicis, and the Vanderbilts have African ancestry despite none of them do. Does he actually hold any historical validity in claiming people are African when they’re not.
I found it in the Smithsonian Magazine, and the African American Registry also supports the theory of Charlotte having black ancestry. It’s possible she is a descendant of Mourana Gil, an African of Moorish descent who was the mother of Margarita de Castro.
If you’re talking about the Medicis not having any black ancestry, I recall them in fact having black members. Christopher Hibbert, an English historian found documents that Alessandro de’Medici was indeed of Moorish descent (George L. Williams support this).
In regards to Carlo de’Medici, that one is debated. Historians say that his mother Maddalena was Circassian which still makes him a POC, but other historians say that Maddalena wasn’t his mother and that his mother was a black woman. Carlo is a debated subject so I don’t have an opinion on that. I personally agree Hibbert and do believe Alessandro on the other hand is indeed black.
I’m not really familiar with Mario Vlades nor his work, for unfortunately my focus isn’t British History, American history, etc. I do think he possibly does have some validity in regards to the Medicis and perhaps even Queen Charlotte.
I mostly do my research as a historian on West Asian history with a bit of research in Russian History if I’m being entirely honest. I just hear about European or American history from my fellow peers in my department from links they sent me. Sorry if this isn’t much help!

THE DECORATIVE III: THE ROCOCO ARABESQUE
As the word “arabesque” suggests, in the 18th- century, the spirals of undulating leaf patterns that pervade the decorative arts were thought to be Islamic, or Moorish, in origin.
In its Islamic form, the arabesque is vegetal, has a repetitive, symmetrical, structure, which is infinitely extensible and uniformly applied across a composition, with no parts privileged over others. Celtic geometric and interlace decoration obeys similar laws.
The 18th century arabesque is repeated in non-hierarchical pattens, but instead of symmetry, rococo designers preferred compositions that balanced asymmetrical forms. The later form is theoretically infinitely extensible, but generally tends to wander, rather than march, across the decorative field and usually winds down or trails off.
The 18th-century variant is more emphatically vegetal than its Islamic and Celtic precursors. Due to their mimetic obligations, however, the stylized acanthus leaves are far less scalable. Designs for stucco ceilings call for many acanthus  leaves arranged in patterns, while the patterns of smaller objects like sconces are composed of a few, naturally-sized leaves.
The acanthus leaf is, of course, a classical topos. The scrolls of foliage seen on Bavarian church ceilings and French furniture may behave in ways similar to Islamic and Celtic decorative patterns, buy they are, au fond, the vinescroll and stylized acanthus of Roman art, subjected to a more frankly decorative pressure.

Harrogate Victorian Turkish Baths The ‘Turkish Baths Harrogate’ are Britain's most fully restored ‘Victorian Turkish Baths'. Although ‘Turkish Baths’ were common in Victorian times, only seven remain which date back to the 19th century. None is as historically complete and in full working order as ‘Harrogate's Turkish Baths’. Their importance lies in the decoration, elaboration and rarity. The Baths' Moorish design with Islamic arches and screens, walls of vibrant glazed brickwork, arabesque painted ceilings and terrazzo floors (laid by the very best Italian experts) all add to its historic elegant features. In its heyday, Harrogate was known as “the English spa” and a leading destination for European high society. The ‘Turkish Baths’ was part of a vast number of facilities available in the ‘Royal Baths Complex’ which opened in 1897. In Victorian times, Royalty would amuse themselves by racing their bathchairs through the Harrogate streets towards the ‘Baths’. Princess Alix of Hesse and her sister, Princess Victoria of Battenburg, were regular visitors. Cabinet meetings were sometimes held in the ‘Pump Room’ with the esteemed enjoying a massage soon after. As well as the ‘Turkish Baths’ other treatments included the medicinal waters dispensary, hydrotherapy departments, mud baths and steam rooms. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #design #words #pictures #harrogate #spatown #takethewaters #royalty #tepidarium #plungepool #calidarium #laconium #frigidarium #turkishbaths #moorishdesign #harrogatevictorianturkishbaths (at Turkish Baths Harrogate) https://www.instagram.com/p/CYbOJ5mIsT8/?utm_medium=tumblr
