Max in the background

I have a lot to say about this scene.

First of all, during Mike's monologue, El's expression literally says "Mike, I know what I'm doing, just let me do it." She doesn't need Mike's advice; she can make her own decisions, and Max completely understands this (seen in her reaction when she hears what Mike says).

Then, when Eleven says "I need you to trust me." Mike could have responded like any boyfriend would "Of course, I trust you, I'm just worried about you." However, he just turns to Max as if seeking her opinion. I don't think someone who loves their girlfriend would ask another person's opinion just to figure out what to say. And Max's reaction is like "of course you can trust her, why are you looking at me like that?"

Also, this is supposed to be an intimate scene, a conversation between just Mike and Eleven, the couple having a discussion. So why is Max in the background? Why do we see all her reactions? Why does Mike turn to her for something he should say on his own? It feels like Max is prompting him to say he trusts Eleven; it's like Max is speaking for Mike. Furthermore, this scene is a direct parallel to two other scenes.

The character placements are exactly the same - the lovers in the middle and on the right, and the other person on the left. I don't think the Duffer Brothers thought, "Let's make three scenes exactly the same, except the one with Eleven and Max is purely platonic."

Gonna get a little bit gay up in here pretty soon. But first, some other stuff.

Pretty much jump right into "Oh shit everything is fucked" with the bio-weapon just spreading everywhere right away.

Skitter's focus on Tattletale specifically when trying to get them to higher ground was top level Chatterbug/Smugbug content. Like sure Sundancer and Trickster too, she wanted to save them. But when Bentley wasn't climbing fast enough what she said to herself in worry was "Tattletale."

Fucking god. Tattletale telling Skitter to fly to the higher building and use bugs so Trickster could teleport them and they'd follow? But fully knowing it wouldn't work and just trying to get Skitter to safety?

"It doesn’t look like her plan will work out. Tell her I’m sorry." - I WAS FUCKING BAWLING

I had figured that Bonesaw's contingency wasn't just a "everyone dies right now" virus or whatever. It would need to be artistic. And it would need to be a punishment to the local capes, both hero and villain. And the way to punish them would be to "take the city from them". "Make them watch it destroy itself." "Make them help".

I feel like what she did covered that general outline with a heavier focus on taking everything away from the capes. But still, god damn Bonesaw. Absolutely fucking terrifying. Super powered face blindness. At the base at least. Don't know who anyone is. Damn.

The "Don't swear!" from Bonesaw while pretending to be Tattletale was fun. I managed to hit on it before that, but it was a good confirmation.

Fucking Jack and his "You’re versatile" after seeing Skitter make decoys while prepping to tie someone up with spiders. FUCK OFF WITH YOUR DREAMS YOU DICK. YOU CAN'T HAVE HER.

Instantly confirmed when Skitter flat refused to shoot someone despite Jack and Bonesaw telling her to. My daughter might not be perfect but she's not going to be one of you!

Coil fucked up a bit on the phone. He wasn't dealing with the pathogen so he should have done better. Even just asking everyone there to say something so he could listen to the voices. He would have known right away it wasn't Tattletale and Grue. Patching them through to Cherish that easily was a mistake. He really doesn't do as much as he could be. Like ya he's evil but that doesn't mean I'm not disappointed when he isn't using his full potential.

Cherish very fucked up when she thought letting Jack and Bonesaw know where she was would be good for her. Hope she likes her eternal torment at the bottom of the ocean. (Ok there's a chance she'll get pulled out in the future I guess.)

I'll admit, when Amy left with Victoria earlier I wasn't expecting to see them again so soon.

"Panacea is the healer, top floor, Jack is the slasher, the blond girl is the chemist-tinker." I don't know why, since it doesn't rhyme or anything, but I got very "The pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon; the vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true" vibes from this.

Jack trying to convince Amy by talking about how many of her ancestors were successful by being cruel and Taylor just internally going "How many were successful because they cooperated?" Love my daughter.

Victoria is still very much . . . not dead.

Interlude 1 - Sierra is amazing. She is exactly who Skitter needs to be running things while she's away. Charlotte is also amazing and I think worships the ground Skitter walks on. My daughter is, as always, absolutely terrifying when described from anyone else's PoV. She only gets more so every time. She just uses bug speak without even realizing now. Amazing. I love her. Atlas is helping and I'm so proud of him. He even got to take the gun. I hope he gets to keep it.

Interlude 2 (thought about making this it's own post but I'll just keep it really simple) - God dammit all three of the big 3 are Cauldron created? Ugh. Legend you appear to be trying to do the right thing but you sure as shit aren't paying much attention are you? Holy shit like, you believed so much of what the Doctor has been saying for years? God damn bud. How could you look at Cauldron and assume they *aren't* doing human experimentation? Especially since you know they have done it in the past! Like god damn man! At least you do kind of acknowledge that maybe you were purposefully ignoring the signs cause you wanted to be ignorant. Maybe there is a little bit of hope for you. Hell of a lore dump interlude though. Gives me lots to think about. Also I'd absolutely listen to The Number Man talk about spreadsheets all day long.

Truly those calling it “bad writing” that Robin and Vickie share similarities doesn’t make sense. She’s not been given enough time to be more than just a love interest, but we do have some info about her:

1. Molly Ringwald inspo, giving us shorthand about being kind of a quirky gal. Hat! Visually, she’s similar to Robin, but that’s not a bad thing because literally similar interests draw people together. She is also skirts vs Robin’s trousers. Femme/Soft Butch! You’re telling me Vickie would wear a tie? Lies.

2. Likes goofy jokes, namely Steve’s joke about Muppet Tammy. Which, Robin doesn’t laugh at Steve’s jokes that much- she dismisses them, but it means Vickie has a bit of a jocular sense of humour.

3. Vickie also likes Steve’s brand of movies, not Robin’s- which is pretty fucking funny. Again, this is not making Vickie similar to Robin, but to things shared with Robin’s Platonic Soulmate. Like, bro movies? Stupid lil jokes? I predict Steve and Vickie having a dad joke competition next season & torturing Robin with how corny they are. People like to talk about the similarities to Robin, but not the similarities to Steve! That’s kind of clever drawing Vickie closer to one of Robin’s favourite people, at least superficially.

4. Talks a lot when one on one, but Vickie wasn’t nervous/flustered in the band scene, so we can infer in more crowded spaces she acts differently/subdued - as like she was in the War Zone. This is unlike Robin who does actually ramble in group scenes, like freaking out over the thing in El’s leg, the rabies bit, or generally a lot of Season 4 where she looses her “cool girl” archetype from Season 3 in favour of chaos. Vickie seems more like she would quietly panic, as opposed to Eddie, Argyle, and Steve who all loudly go WHAT THE FUCK. Which is going to be interesting to see as the whole town is now thrown into an open gate downtown Hawkins probably releasing demogorgons every other hour like it’s Pacific Rim up in this bitch.

5. Meaningful look with Robin in the War Zone- not “oh hi band friend!” A scared/caught/dismayed look that she was there. So there is a connection, and she broke up with her boyfriend after that connection. Anything more is speculation, but the way she wasn’t looking at Robin when she gave the “he doesn’t like Fast Times” reason lets the audience draw points and maybe she felt trapped? Like it was just an excuse to pursue a different interest? Obviously because music is playing indicating a romantic relationship. We don’t have much to compare Robin with on this one, but around Keith she still had more confidence and bullshittery trying to convince him to hire Steve when Keith assumed they were a thing.

6. Vickie also doesn’t seem jealous. Robin is jealous. She was livid at Steve for being the object of Tammy’s affections, but Vickie hasn’t seemed to even look twice at Steve- even as Robin looked over at him while she and Vickie had her last scene.

For such a short amount of time in the season, I think that we have a good foundation for similarities and differences to Robin. Also, once again, it’s not a crime to avoid “opposites attract” tropes. Having similarities is good! Like, the amount of couples I know that are essentially the same archetype of queer person is not even close to zero. Especially when it comes to older queer couples who got together in the 80s/90s, they kind of morph into being one granola bar of a human being. Kind of similar with straight people when they genuinely like one another.

I hope they flesh Vickie out, but like, we’ve gotten a similar amount of screen time for Mr Clarke but no one is mad he is “one dimensional” when he is just, some exposition science guy. He’s a stock and standard teacher, has a girlfriend, and kind of goes along with explaining shit without questioning why a lot. But folks love Mr Clarke. Is it because Mr Clarke isn’t getting in the way of your ship?

I never thought I would see the day there were some true blue f/f ship wars, but bruh, Robin’s love life isn’t an A Plot so give the writers some slack. They’re human, not the devil. None of you were gleeks and it shows so fucking much. None of you lived through “angry lesbians on the internet don’t want me dating you”.

Personally I’m looking forward to Robin and Vickie getting together and maybe hopefully kicking monster butt together- or at least, Robin getting a nice little badass moment defending her gal.

okay so listen I have this thought

after seeing the movie twice in theaters (where I could still have missed something), I don’t think there’s any direct mention that Victoria was the one who took Jenny in after her mom died (when she was 6) and her dad disappeared (when she was 8)

I think the 15 years Victoria mentions probably started from when Ted disappears (putting Jenny around 23?), so there’s a lot of time in Jenny’s life where we don’t know who was taking care of her. I suspect the intention was for it to be Victoria unless the ambiguity was on purpose, and Jenny likely did live with her for a time

but maybe not the whole time? maybe there’s somebody else who Ted would leave his darling daughter with if he was about to try a dangerous stunt? somebody who Victoria would easily be able to win custody from, adding to Jenny & Victoria’s animosity? somebody who would raise a kid who would steal some shit from a high security facility while wearing that rad lavender suit?

Nancy starts hanging out at Family Video more after breaking up with Jonathan because, well, they all hang out at Family Video these days, it’s just the place to be

nevermind that she really likes being around Steve-and-Robin (you don’t get one without the other), that’s probably not important

except Robin, who has gotten comfortable enough around the kids to be cool and banter with them and only ever rambles now to give passionate speeches about why they should rent x instead of y movie, is suddenly blushing and stammering every time Nancy comes into the store

it’s a miracle Dustin hasn’t picked up on it, but then Dustin--as genius as he is--can be kind of clueless

anyway Steve just smirks at Robin one day as Nancy leaves with all the kids and a couple of movies in tow, and when she turns around to question why the fuck he’s looking at her like that he’s just like “so how long have you been crushing on Nancy?”

cue Robin panicking and Steve assuring her it’s alright, really, and they settle into this funny rhythm of teasing each other for falling for falling for the same girl (”but I mean, come on, it’s Nancy Wheeler, of course we did.” “you’re right. who wouldn’t?” “maybe we should get jackets. do you think Jonathan would join our club?”)

no big deal, except meanwhile Nancy is still wondering why she’s most comfortable around Steve-and-Robin, or Robin-and-Steve, and why she’s suddenly driving to Family Video, or to Steve’s house, or to wherever the two of them are whenever she’s lonely

Nancy Wheeler doesn’t get lonely. she doesn’t need to go to someone for comfort. but she finds herself going to Steve-and-Robin all the time anyway

long story short comphet Nancy my beloved (not my usual headcanon but still my beloved) thinks maybe she is falling for Steve again and even works up the courage to ask him out one day at Family Video

Robin overhears Steve letting her down easy

and the thing is, Robin is more in love with Nancy than Steve thinks he ever was. and in all honesty, now that the world isn’t in danger and he has time to think, asking Nancy to be the mother of his six children is weird at best and downright insulting once you remember that she’s Nancy ‘screw that’ Wheeler

so maybe he doesn’t have feelings for her so much anymore. and maybe the weirdly relieved look on Nancy’s face when he turned her down means something

and maybe, maybe Nancy overhears them talking about it, Robin telling Steve yet again that she just wants him to be happy, she can get over her crush on Nancy if it means they’re both happy

and maybe it clicks that it’s less Steve-and-Robin, or even Robin-and-Steve, and more Robin that keeps Nancy coming into Family Video, or hanging out at Steve’s house, or inviting both of them over for movie nights in the basement

and maybe she goes to Steve, potentially drunk and definitely scared as hell, and tells him in a rush of nerves and courage that she thinks she has feelings for his best friend, not for him, and she’s so very sorry

Steve just grins. the next time he sees Robin he makes the very official announcement that “I don‘t have feelings for Nancy Wheeler and henceforth it shall be known that going out with her will not break the best friend code in any way”

Robin rolls her eyes because okay, sure, whatever, it’s never going to happen anyway

little does she know that Nancy is outside with milkshakes, Robin’s favorite tape (courtesy of Steve) playing in her car, waiting for Steve to push Robin out of Family Video insisting he can cover her shift while she goes on her first date
