Favourite Vid of the Year: I think “Rose Bride My World” is pretty much Tessa and my magnum opus. It’s very niche, but it’s definitely the most epic thing we’ve ever made!
Least Favourite: My heart wasn’t really in making “Houses in Your Heart” — I think it came together well, but I was pretty tapped out on feelings about the IT movies when I made it. (My true love is the book.) “Our Year” and “Ne dis pas aux copains” have sections I would like to tweak.
Vid Most Unappreciated By The Universe: I wasn’t really expecting a TON of notes on the ten-minute SKU/RHPS mashup, but would love to be able to beam it directly to anyone in the world who would really appreciate it. I think “Eat Them” and “Don’t Bring Me Down” probably have the worst views-to-kudos ratios.
Most Fun Vid: "Beautiful Dirty Rich”! But a lot of them are fun; I mostly make fun vids.
Vid With The Single Sexiest Moment: I made “Finesse” exclusively to highlight Cyd Charisse’s legs, which I couldn’t work into my other three Singin’ in the Rain vids, and it was worth it. (Oh, and I guess the two Sense8 vids are all about orgies...)
Most Successful: "Umbrella” is probably the most successful vid I’ll ever make (if I skew stats in favor of AO3 engagement, which I do). “I Feel Like This Isn’t About Me” did NUMBERS on YouTube, though, and "Masculine Women, Feminine Men” also gets a lot of love (and some homophobia) there.
Biggest Vid Fail: My ongoing inability to get uncorrupted source for the Mad Men vid I’ve been working on since March?
Hardest Vid To Make: I’m not quite sure why, but “Rose Garden” definitely felt like the most tortured process, although I’m quite happy with how it turned out. I think it was that we were trying to fit so much narrative into some really short amounts of time.
Most Unintentionally Telling Vid: All of my vids are probably intentionally telling…? <-- this was my answer last year and I still don’t have a real answer to this
Last Year’s Goals:
- Sign-up for Festivids — done!
- Make another premiere for a con — done!
- Make at least one or two vids for longer sources — I did a few vids for TV shows, and just finished a Leverage vid that took a lot of impatient clipping
- Do something more experimental in style — I think I pushed myself a bit on “Genghis Khan” and “Magic Man,” and I was excited to work with new-to-me source types in “Desaparecida,” but there’s more I’d like to try
Goals For Next Year:
- Continue to experiment and take risks!
- Finish at least one more Hollywood history vid
- Make a feelingsy serious vid because basically all I’ve been able to finish lately is fun pop song stuff
- Possibly make a treat for this year’s Festivids (admittedly this is a goal for the first couple weeks of January)

13, 14, and 22! I love your vids, too, so feel free to answer this with vids as well as fic!
Hiii thank you for questions!
13 - favorite writing song/artist/album of this year
I don't listen to music while I write -- I struggle with any sort of soundscape while I'm writing, too distracting -- so I am going to tell you about the vid song artists I've discovered this year!
AJR - these guys wrote the song "Bang!" that I made my all-the-Wu-Xies Bang! vid to. They have great, rhythmic songs with inventive lyrics that are just weird and emotive enough to be great for vidding. I've got at least one more song (World's Smallest Violin) by them that I want to vid.
IDK How But They Found Me - I used their song "Choke" to vid Chen Moqun and Lin Nansheng from The Rebel (the Z1L WW2 communism show), and I adore their vibe. They're just the right kind of dramatic and rhythmic and cynical to work for the kind of vids I like to make. Am currently obsessed with Razzmatazz and trying to find a fandom to vid it to. Will say their name is stupid long and hard to credit in vids, though.
14 - a fic you didn’t expect to write
Just answered this for Elenothar here -- I got surprised by how interested I got in Xiaoge, but can't point to a specific fic as being very surprising. Including vids, I'd point to Chasing Cars, because the editing style and type of song is not what I usually go for.
22 - events you participated in this year
Hah, reading this ask I was like "don't think I did much this year??" but here's the list and, well, I did a couple things:
Guardian Wishlist 2021: Space to Live [Fic, DMBJ], Choke [Vid, The Rebel]
Wang Pangzi Week 2021: Recast [Fic Collab, DMBJ]
Sundial Exchange 2021: Kite With a Broken String [Fic, Guardian], Chasing Cars [Vid, DMBJ]
Fanworks 2021: Bang [Vid, DMBJ], 9 to 5 [Vid, DMBJ]
VidUKon 2021: Snakes (on a Plane) [Vid, DMBJ]
Vexercises: Lonely Shepherd/Bury a Friend [Vid, DMBJ]
Festivids: Ain't My Fault [Vid, Knives Out]
I am also signed up to Yuletide and working on that currently. We'll see if I'll have time left for treats. >_> I kind of wanted to check out the DMBJ rarepair exchange but didn't get around to it. I'll have to write all my Wu Xie/Huo Daofu and Xiaoge/Hei Xiazi some other time.
End of Year Ask Game
