Tips from a grocery worker/foodsafe certified waiter!
The temperature 'danger zone' for food and drink is 40-140F, with 2 hours being the limit without refrigeration/cooking.
Open container, Public Intoxication, and Driving Under Influence are all separate broken laws. Establishments that serve alcohol in the US are required to cut you off the moment you are visibly drunk. 'Open container' can also be a misnomer and vary by state- bottles and cans in anything less than a glued blox may need to be in a bag.
Raw flour has E. Coli bacteria, factory farmed eggs will have salmonella due to poor hygiene (sitting in their own shit).
Speaking of eggs, grocery eggs are 2 weeks old due to needing to properly settle to a baking standard. Eggs from a local farmer may be safer, but will also be somewhat different and not have enough air for baking until they are also that age.
Steak is safe to eat rare due to its thickness and proximity away to any nasties in the body waste; hamburger is not. Burger is ground up with various cuts and intestines so needs to be cooked properly well done. Chickens are too small to have this effect, so salmonella is a risk no matter what. Pork is somewhat in between, as there is a risk for trichinosis, but the larvae are much easier to spot, making this start to go extinct in domestic pigs.
Dogs and Cats in general cannot have spices or seasonings, grapes, chocolate, or milk.
Most creatures are lactose intolerant due to the fact that they will not grow up into 1000 lb animals. Goats however, are closer to human size so their milk and cheese is more digestible. Smaller animals will need dilluted goat's milk, into a custom formula. (your grocery store may have this in a can, powdered.)
Pasta noodles mainly exist to hold sauce flavor in proportion; thicker noodles like rotini are usually recommended for thicker sauces such as tomato/marinara.
It is safer for pizza chefs to not wear gloves, actually! Gloves cannot be washed, only changed, and they are trained anyways to not touch someone's food once cooked. Cooking trays/pans, industrial sized knives, spatulas, and boxes all make this possible.
Humans are very dense and weighty creatures proportionally, that they can essentially tank a lot of poison damage that other animals cannot. This is one of many reasons we are not picky eaters as a whole!
Kids instinctively dislike bitter foods due to not having grown up into this said tankiness; vegetables and things that may be good for them can taste like poison, and they cannot tell the difference yet.
Electric Kettles are more efficient at boiling water than stovetops. I'll let the video guy speak for himself, but they boil water directly rather then heating a pot/pan which then heats the water. This is great for things such as small meals, partially unclogging drains, or heating bathwater.
Keurig or similar machines do not boil the water for your coffee! They heat to 100 degrees, so if your town has a boil order up, do not pour unboiled water into their tanks!
Large packs of water and soda often have bar codes on the top- you may not have to lift them if a laser-gun can get involved!
chicken nuggets from the golden arches are beer battered, the way fish are. They're fish-fried chicken.
Grocery Register Belts can have some really dumb design- with the computer /register itself taking up half the width of the goddamn belt. Keep your food safer by loading the belt heavy to light if you can- or light to heavy. Also, putting your food in a straight line towards the checker. You cannot trust the infared camera to stop the belt unless your items are opaque- your beer will crush your bananas in front of them unless they can slide over the scanner zone. You will prefer a fixable scan error until we can perform alchemy.
Fruits and Vegetables have 4 digit international trade codes! unless you know what breed your apple is or are bad with numbers, these are probably easier to input if you happen to be ringing these up yourself. It is perfectly possible for a self-check system to sell you the wrong kind. Same thing with the numbers on a bar code- they also work, if your code is faded or corrupted. (or, for whatever fucking reason a brand decides, light colors like silver, or cute shapes. those suck. looking at you, bud fucking weiser with your fucking ribbon.) The laser guns are a bit more accurate than the belt as a second resort.

How To Use Activated Charcoal in Fish Tanks?

How To Use Activated Charcoal in Fish Tanks?
Activated charcoal has been used in home aquariums for decades and is still the most bought product for filtration systems. As new types of filters and materials became available, the debate about the effectiveness of active charcoal in filters also started.
Some believe that it should be used as standard support for continuous use in most filters. Others believe it should be used only for special needs, and others believe it should not be used at all.
Charcoal is depleted relatively quickly when used in an aquarium filter. For this reason, if you choose to use activated charcoal continuously, it must be replaced regularly. Otherwise, it is not very beneficial.
What is activated charcoal?
Activated charcoal or activated carbon is made from a carbonaceous material that has been heat-treated at very high temperatures to create many tiny pores, thus increasing its surface.
These tiny pores and its massive surface allow the filter material to capture a large volume of material, making it useful for removing pollutants from both air and water.
Different methods of creating activated charcoal have resulted in different forms of material suitable for different uses. In aquariums, the most commonly used form is GAC or granular activated charcoal. Other forms of activated carbon would be:
BAC, or activated charcoal beads
EAC, or extruded activated carbon
GAC, or granulated activated carbon
PAC, powdered activated carbon, is also available as a tablet.
There are also different sources of charcoal itself, each resulting in a different possible pore size. Materials such as coal, coconut, peat, bamboo, and wood are used to create activated charcoal. For aquariums, the best source is coal.
What does activated carbon do?
Activated charcoal absorbs a number of dissolved contaminants, such as chloramine and chlorine, tannins, which stain the water, and phenols, which cause odors. It will help avoid yellowing the water over time.
You need to understand that there are several important toxins that activated charcoal does not remove. In particular, it does not remove ammonia, nitrites, or nitrates. Therefore, it does not help to remove toxins during the initial installation of the aquarium. Changing the water or other methods should be used to reduce the high levels of ammonia, nitrites, or nitrates.
Heavy metals, such as lead or copper, are not removed. If the water source has heavy metals, use a water treatment product before placing it into the aquarium.
Activated carbon and medicines
Activated charcoal will absorb many drugs used to treat fish diseases. Therefore, before treating sick fish with medicine, all charcoal must be removed from the filter. Once the course of treatment is complete, you can add the activated charcoal back to the filter. The charcoal will remove any residual medicine from the aquarium’s water.
Placing it in the filter
Activated charcoal will lose its effectiveness quite quickly if exposed to a lot of debris from the aquarium. Keep in mind that if you do not keep your aquarium clean and debris accumulates in the filter, activated charcoal will not be effective.
Change of active charcoal
Since activated charcoal absorbs the compounds it removes, it eventually becomes saturated. Therefore, it needs to be replaced regularly, once a month being usually enough. Longer intervals between replacements will not harm the aquarium, but charcoal will gradually lose its ability to remove toxins from the water.
If you see the water getting yellowed or smelly, it’s time to change the activated charcoal.
Myths about the reuse of active charcoal
There are many stories about the reuse of active carbon. Some even give step-by-step instructions that generally involve baking the charcoal in the oven. These stories are myths.
Temperature and pressure are required for the reuse of depleted activated charcoal and cannot be obtained in the kitchen oven.
It is better to buy new charcoal from the fish store or any pet store when you need to replace it and make sure you keep unused activated charcoal in a sealed container as it can absorb odors and chemicals from the air.
De-absorption
You may have heard that once activated charcoal has reached its full capacity, it will begin to drain some of the absorbed materials back into the water. This is not an exact statement. Although technically possible, “de-absorption” requires changes in water chemistry that simply do not occur in an aquarium.
However, the procedures used to create a specific type of activated charcoal can lead to the presence of phosphate in the final product. In this case, the phosphate already present in the activated charcoal may leak into the aquarium water. Some activated carbon products will specifically mention whether they do or do not contain phosphates.
If you experience problems with persistently high levels of phosphates in the aquarium and find no other cause, remove the activated charcoal entirely. Perform normal maintenance of the aquarium for several months and check if the phosphate level remains high. If it remains high, probably the reason for the increased phosphate level was not charcoal.
Be careful when using activated charcoal
You might also like my articles about:

In general, using activated charcoal in your filter is a good thing, but not a necessity. If you test your water, make periodic partial changes to your aquarium water, and filter your tap water for replacement, you don’t need to use coal. This is just an extra expense, as charcoal needs to be replaced every month.
Coal in a recirculating filtration system will also act as a home for beneficial bacteria that convert ammonia into nitrite and then into nitrate.
When you change the charcoal every month, you’re actually throwing out some of the bio-filter and it will take some time for the new charcoal to grow beneficial bacteria on it. If activated charcoal is a significant material in your filtration system, you will lose the bio-filter with each replacement.
There may be an increase in ammonia levels after the new activated carbon is added. To prevent this, use sponges, beads, granules, or ceramic balls in sufficient amounts in the filter to act as the primary medium for the bacteria that form the biofilter.
Activated charcoal powder, when used in the filtration system, has been reported to reach the aquarium in the form of fine dust that is trapped in the gills of the fish.
There are cases where fish died after inhaling powdered coal that was not properly placed in a bag of materials in the filter. Necropsy done on dead fish showed carbon particles in gills and fin tissues.
Using granulated activated charcoal or tablets, and rinsing them with distilled water before inserting them into the filter space will prevent this problem.
Use distilled or deionized water to rinse the new charcoal to prevent chlorine from being absorbed from tap water before it is inserted into the filter!

Discus freshwater fish
Tumblr media
The Phantom tetra goes well with other tetras of similar size. Males may claim small territories and occasionally minor battles may occur. The black phantom tetra enjoy being in groups of 6 or more and a slightly shaded tank. This fish can survive out of the water and " walk" as long as kept wet, for a very long time. The albino form is common in the aquarium trade. The blotched upside-down catfish is well suited to aquariums because of its small size (typically 9 or 10 cm or less) and peaceful demeanor. nigriventris prefers bottom feeding on Tubifex (or similar worms), but its main diet consists of algae. Similar to catfish but not in the same genusįirewood catfish, (planiceps) shovelnose catfish Spotted pimelodus, pictus, pictus catfish Needs at least a 2,600 US gallons (9,800 L) tank when mature, even though this does not provide them with the space to show their natural behaviour. One of the most popular Hypancistrus species. Leopard sailfin pleco, clown sailfin pleco Few other species can rival their majestic behaviour, colours and intelligence. Ĭommon pleco, suckermouth catfish, Amazon sailfin catfish Discus are considered by most as the ultimate freshwater aquarium fish. It is a peaceful fish that is best kept in good sized groups (6+) in a mature tank with plenty of shady hiding spots amongst plants, driftwood, slate caves, and PVC pipes. Males and female both have long "bristles" on their nose, the males having distinctly longer ones. The bristlenose genus has at least 59 identified species and many others yet to be named. Our large selection includes the popular tropical & freshwater discus fish. Threestripe corydoras, leopard catfish, false julii cory Peppered corydoras, salt and pepper catfish Disease should not be a concern provided that you maintain the aquarium to standards. The Emerald Cory Catfish is a very hardy and resilient fish. To help control the buildup of detritus in the bottom of your discus community tank you should consider keeping a few bottom feeders like corydoras catfish or plecostomus.Catfish Armored catfish including Aspidoras, Brochis, Callichthys, and Corydoras Long-lasting foods like vegetables and algae wafers should be removed from the tank after an hour before they dissolve or decompose. Try to only feed your fish twice a day, varying the types of food at each feeding, and do not offer your fish more than they can eat within 3 to 5 minutes. To start with, Corydoras species inhabit a totally separate layer of water they mostly are substratal to be specific, they like to stay around the bottom of the tank or aquarium, and they feed on the leftovers that your Discus might not have eaten. Selling discus fish has been my full-time job since 1990, and I launched my online discus fish store in 1994. Among the most suitable tankmates for Discus fish is the Corydoras and the following are a couple of whys and wherefores. Breeding and raising thousands of them over the years, I’ve been able to witness the explosion of exciting new discus fish colors available to hobbyists. If you have an established colony of beneficial bacteria in your tank they should be able to handle the biological load of your tank but over-feeding can result in high ammonia levels beyond the capacity of your beneficial bacteria to handle. Keeping discus fish has been a hobby and passion since the mid 70’s. As that organic debris breaks down, ammonia is produced which can be very toxic for aquarium fish. Find the leading variety of discus fish for sale at The iFISH Store Discus fish are the stunningly beautiful freshwater fish originating from the waters of. The more you feed your fish, the more waste they will produce and any uneaten fish food will sink to the bottom of the tank and collect as organic debris. Though feeding is very important, it is also important that you do not over-feed your discus community tank because this could lead to problems with water quality.

So like.. in the pokemon world, is it normal for the equivalent of pet shops (which I guess would just be pokemon supply shops?) To have huge tanks/ponds in stock or is it like normal pet stores where they have tiny ass tanks branded with pictures of fish you could definitely not keep in there on them? I want to see what a pokemon world pet store looks like plz

HI I LOVE YOUR WRITING! aaa sO I don't know if you still accept prompts but if you do could you do one with MC being fascinated by the brothers' demon forms and seeing the brothers react to them carefully inspecting their horns/wings/tails??
AHHHHH I love that you love it! And of course! :) Horns are my weak spot lmao. Hope you like!
Lucifer
Hmph. Isn’t ecstatic about you wanting to nose around in his business at first. No matter how touched starved he is, just the thought of your tiny human fingers exploring him…Well on the other hand-
At first, he thought you had some weird fetish for his demonic form. Wouldn’t be the first time a human had. But slowly he realizes you are genuinely just enamored with him. It strokes his ego sky high.
He loves it when you stroke and pet his horns. The bases of which are super sensitive. The amount of time you have spent just looking at the gold-tipped bone, he is certain you probably have memorized the number of chips and notches in them.
You start bringing ornaments and tassels for his horns. Things you made or found pretty when out shopping. He doesn’t wear them in public but likes it when you put them on him in private.
It takes him longer to let you get your hands on his wings though. Looking at the mess of his back isn’t pleasant for him.
He has a dust bath. He loves dusting, and when you help him. Ugh-it’s like his own little paradise.
He teaches you how to preen and find broken feathers to pluck. Your cooing over his soft feathers just makes him fluff up more.
He shows off his horns and wings just a touch more in public now.
Mammon
Hells yeah you can see his demon form. Why wouldn’t you want to? He is absolutely delighted to have you lovin’ all over him. He’s big on scenting.
He is especially proud of his wings, in all his forms. Leathery or feathery, they are his favorite part of his body. They are strong, reliable, and fast if he needs to protect you.
He makes sure you are extra careful about his horns though. The spirling columns of bone aren’t smooth like Lucifer’s and have a wicked sharp point on the tips. His horns grow a lot faster than his brothers. A lot of his horn upkeep is him shaving them down and oiling them.
You take delight in doing that for him. The keratin of his horns flakes quickly so you like to help with that too.
He doesn’t have much feeling around his horn area so you won’t get too many reactions from him. Now his wings~
He gets a kick out of watching you open and close his wings. You are mesmerized by his leather wings stretching to their full wingspan.
His wings look fragile upon closer inspection. You can feel the beats of his hearts through the thin membrane stretched over black bones. It almost makes you forget that you’ve seen him bludgeon demons to death with them before.
You’re so enamored with his wings you miss how flustered he gets when you trace your fingers around the base of his wings. Right where the limbs attach to his back. It’s a very tender spot that hurts most times when he touches it, but maybe because it’s you it feels really good.
Leviathan
He is apprehensive to have you inspect him at first.
Doesn’t have wings and is kinda jelly. But he has a bitchin’ tail, and you remind him often of it.
His tail is strong. A lot stronger than you originally thought. You can feel the slide and pull of thick muscle underneath his leathery skin when he swifts around.
It took you a while to get him to understand you are 1000% ok with his tail and horns being out, in public or private.
He notices that you can't keep your eyes and hands off his tail. While he never does it in front of his brothers he loves to pick you up with it. Your giggles and gasps of awe, while you dangle above him in his secure grasp, brings a huge smile to his face.
He has the most strenuous care routine out of all the brothers. His tail sheds a lot and dries out easily. It is usually a very intimate affair. Lucky for you, he likes you.
He shows you how to use his dry brush to sluff off the dead skin from his tail and scaly parts of his back. It's therapeutic to him. He talks about his newest hyper fixation while you brush and pet his tail.
His horns are a bit more persnickety. They are made up of a delicate ecosystem of coral and sea vegetation. It’s a beautiful vivid array of purple, pink, and blues. Henry and schools of smaller fish make little homes in it when Levi is in his tank.
It has to be kept moist and landscaped or it gets overgrown. He has a knack for aquatic horticulture and gives you a chance to learn too.
It naturally changes size and color based on the Devildom seasons. Your favorite displays are during the warmer seasons.
You buy little tank ornaments to decorate his horns to post on devilgram from time to time. It gets so many likes he gets so excited.
He wears your work proudly, even if it’s not up to his usual standard. His water monster brethren are jealous of the attention, and that’s what matters most.
Satan
If you bring up your interest in a scientific or educational manner, he is more willing to share. He has had far too many run-ins with witches and humans vying for him to be comfortable flaunting his demon form.
As the only born devil out of the group you have to be extra careful with his horns and tail. The bony structure of them is like fine sandpaper. Rough, course and far too abrasive for your tinder human skin.
You have to wear gloves when handling his horns and tail. He apologizes a lot about it. It angers him that he is the one brother that has to be so careful around you.
You really don’t mind though. Even through the thick leather gloves you feel the pulsing heat of his magic. You like the tingling feeling of his magic through your gloves, it’s like licking a battery.
He doesn’t need maintenance on his horns and tail as much as the others. But his horns do fall off like deer antlers.
He gets really irritated when it’s shedding season. The itching and throbbing of his horns when they are ready to fall off is maddening.
You always know when it is horn season due to the deep gouges in the stone walls around the house. You help him though this by scratching around the bases of his horns. It feels so good to have it scratched, and it’s 10x better when it’s not him.
Normally he would just dispose of his horns when they fall off or use them for alchemical purposes. Now, he gives some of them to you. You collect them and have turned a few sets into some lovely pieces of art in his opinion.
Asmodeus
Very much like Mammon- who wouldn’t love his horns and wings? He loves them, so obviously everybody should.
Absolutely eats up your praise and curious touches. He shows you the best places to pet or stroke.
His wings are leathery like Mammons but 1000x more sensitive all-round. He can sense air currents with them, so sneaking up on him to touch a wing is out of the question. As much as you would like to.
Loves see you try though. Will fake being surprised when you come at him from behind to lovingly touch a wing.
He shows you the best places to touch and examine his wings and horns. His smaller set of wings have this one spot underneath their pit that is super ticklish. When you find it, exploit it. He has the best laugh.
He admits to you that he dyes his horns. What can he say? Pink is the best color and his horns just look that much more fabulous in it.
You can convince him to try different colors, but only if you help him dye them. Starts matching colors and outfits with you and his horn color of the month.
His cleaning and maintenance routine he likes to do himself. Sorry! Nothing against you, but he is too meticulous to ask for help. But please stay and watch!
He shows off a lot more when cleaning and moisturizing his horns and wings. Stretching them out, or making sure his horns are shiny enough to catch the light of his room.
Absolutely soaks up for enamored gasps and wide eyes stares.
Beelzebub
Just shrugs when you ask to see his wings and horns.
Of course, he doesn't mind you touching them. He just finds it odd. Kinda forgot that it's not a normal occurrence in the human realm.
He has no issues with you touching or rubbing on his horns. He doesn't have any feeling in them anyway.
But, unfortunately, you can only look at his wings. The cuticle is very fragile so he can't just flare his wings out whenever he feels like the others.
You find the hard casing that protects his wings just as fascinating though. The iridescent sheen of it is mesmerizing. Your eyes can't pick up all the colors that it gleams, but it's still beautiful regardless.
You have a hard time getting any of the shell bits when they shed. Beel normally eats them and he is much faster than you.
But he will temper himself and save a few for you once he figures out why you are pouting.
His paper-thin shell casing resembles stained glass when you hold it up to the light. You have taken to making a large wind chime out of the shedding of the brother's horns and wings. His chitin is the perfect addition to give the slightly macabre piece some color.
He-and the other brothers find it kinda odd that you collect essentially garbage to them, but they chalk it up to a weird human quirk.
If it makes you happy-*shrugs*
Belphegor
Like his twin, doesn’t get the hype around it. But, if it means you’ll be spending more time with him then he won’t complain.
You pet his tail a lot when he is sleeping. His tail is soft and fluffy. It wraps around you while he slumbers, locking you in place by his side.
He wakes you up by tickling your nose with the tuft of his tail. He teases you when it makes you sneeze.
If you thought his bedhead was bad, wait till you see him struggling with the tangles at the tip of his tail.
You offer to help comb it out. Maybe even convince him to invest in a good bottle of conditioner. He takes you along to buy it and lets you choose the scent.
He has a penchant for cucumber and melon scents when it comes to his detergent and pillow sprays so you keep to that realm.
He cannot express how much he doesn’t care about upkeep so if you want to brush his tail and examine his horns go to town, means he doesn’t have to do it.
Belphie gets addicted quickly to you doting on his form. He sleeps harder and better after a session with you brushing his tail or rubbing at his horns.
You’ve learned just how to massage his scalp and where to scratch around his horns to help him fall asleep. He doesn't realize he does it himself as a self-soothing mechanism until you bring it up one night.
When you hit the sweet spots at the base of his tail or horns he can’t control the twitching and movements of his tail.

Atlantic Runaways (Part 1)
I’m feeling a bit unmotivated today and sicky, ill do as much as i can today so in case i can’t upload much take this fic i made a while ago.
Also future parts of this au will contain noms! So just be aware of that!
Warnings: Mistreatment (Take this warning seriously please)
Words: 1.8k
When Wilbur was a young Mer, he enjoyed swimming around in the open waters, living with his pod and learning new things. But that wasn’t easy nowadays living within a cramped tank, especially being forced to perform. He was captured several years ago now, he was a full adult now, being raised in what he could barely call his home.
So many people mistreated him here, not to mention the lack of food, he was almost always starving but over the years you get used to that sort of thing, all that matters really is if you do well during your performances you get more food, and he hates it here. He really hates these humans, they’re pitiful.
He hates the crowds and how they applause after doing a single flip, his trainer seems to agree on that. He always scowls whenever he hears those cheers, but it wasn’t like he’s on Wilbur’s good side, he was just as bad as the people who watched his suffering.
He was one of the ones who caused his suffering. Treating as if he were any less than him, paying no kindness or compassion, the lack of food, if he performed one-trick incorrectly, he would not get any dinner, he hated this place.
Back in the ocean, things were so much easier, so much more space, freedom, family and everything. Now he sat at the bottom of the tank, his cave barely fitting half of his body, his hunger craved food, sometimes he even thought of eating humans but if he wanted any chance of escape, it would probably be best not to do so.
He sighed; he couldn’t even see the stars anymore as he was moved to indoors, only going outside for outdoor performances. It just led to even less space, this place for Wilbur was hell, they didn’t even know he resembled a human, being sentient and able to speak.
Meanwhile, with TommyInnit, he was having the best moments of his life. He had recently finished a course on Marine biology and was now on his to becoming an intern for L’manburgs most famous water park!
He would be able to work with sea creatures! He could study them, communicate and understand them! He had applied for the position a while ago and well got accepted!
“Dear Tommy Danger Kraken Innit,
We are happy to announce that you are now a part of the team! Welcome to L’manburg Water Park! With your help, we’ll rescue all sorts of sea creatures, learn new things about them and even perform with them! We hope you’re as excited as we are!
Please come to the park on Monday morning, once you arrive at the receptionist desk, state your name and we’ll show you around the park and how everything works! We hope to see you soon! – Staff”.
Tommy was so excited he yelled at the top of his lungs! Jumping with joy! He would finally accomplish his dream! He could work with sea animals! He was so excited to tell Tubbo! He immediately ran over to his phone to call him.
Once the phone picked up there was groaning on the other side, he had woken up Tubbo. “Pft, Did I wake you, Big man?”. He groaned in response to that, “What do you want, Toms?”. “Well~,” he said dragging out the ‘L’, “I’ve got big news, Big man! I got accepted for the internship!”.
Tubbo woke up at the fact, gasping in excitement “Really man?! Oh, that’s great! I’m so happy for you, man!”.  Tubbo exclaimed. “When do you start?”. “Next Monday, actually! I’m really looking forward to it!”.
The next couple of days went by quickly, and then Tommy’s alarm went off, he rushed downstairs and ate his breakfast as fast as possible. His dad was surprised with how excited he was, insisting that they go immediately, pushing him out the door, it was the most excited he’s seen Tommy in ages, it made him happy.
He soon arrived at the park, he tried to walk calmly towards the reception, but he practically sprinted towards the reception. Many people were lined up to visit the park, but he walked right past them, gaining multiple stares. The busy receptionist looked towards Tommy, smiled sweetly and asked, “How may I help you?”.
“Hey I’m Tommy! I’m here for the internship”. “OH! Of course!”. The receptionist got up from their desk and went towards a draw and pulled out a couple of things, some papers and a wet suit. “Here’s your suit! If the size needs adjustments, please let us know! Just head behind here” They gestured to some doors,
“Just head straight away and at the second turn, the third door to the left will take you to the office where our boss will speak to you!”. He smiled and thanked the receptionist.
He took the receptionist’s directions and knocked on the office door, “Come in!” said a voice on the other side. He entered and there sat a man who looked like he meant business, with his dark brown hair and horns. “I’m Schlatt, nice to meet ya’ Kid!”. He smiled; something seemed a little off about this man, but he seemed friendly enough.
He waved back, “Have a seat”. There the two conversed about the details, safety, rules and regulations of the job. He also had to sign some papers to make the job official but now he was officially an intern! And according to this one paper, he was going to be trained under a person by the name of $*&^£, and he was going to be working with a Mer named Wilbur.
From the details of Wilbur, he was quite the large Mer, being just about over 30 ft in length. He also had a record of being docile when being worked with but wasn’t the friendliest Mer but wasn’t the most dangerous either as he hasn’t had a track record of incidents.
When asked about it, they had said “Oh, Wilbur needs some experience, and every other trainer is currently really busy with their Mers, the only ones available were those two”.
Despite that fact, he was still excited! He was going to be working with a Mer and that was a rare opportunity! He got changed into the suit and went out into the training area. There sat the trainer, he looked shady with his hair and face unkempt, covered in dirt and the strange smell. He looked very strange, with the fact that he was also smoking a cigar which probably wasn’t allowed on the job.
“Ah, you must be the newbie.”. It sounded grumpy, like his face with a scowl but it immediately changed to a cheery and upbeat attitude. “Nice to meet you Kiddo! Name’s $%^&£ and I’m pretty sure you know how to work with Mer right?”. He nodded; he had taken a Marine Biology course.
“Good, I’ll show you the Mer you’ll be working with”. They walked towards the pool, despite Wilbur’s size, it looked quite small to fit a Mer as big as Wilbur. The man then dipped his hand into the water and made a couple of splashing movements. Tommy looked towards the water, and something worked within it. A chirp could be heard in response as water splashed as Wilbur surfaced.
“Wilbur, this is the newbie I told you about, be nice”. To which he left them to be alone, and by that, he left the room entirely. He was trusting a teenager with a dangerous creature, the thought of being alone with a Mer was exciting but all the scarier with how dangerous Mer could be.
After a brief moment of silence, the Mer made eye contact with Tommy, he looked to be scowling in somewhat disgust, not only that but unhappy. “Hey there! I’m Tommy!” he tried his best to smile but the look on Wilbur’s face somewhat scared him. The Mer made a low warning growl with his fins flared and dove back into the water, not even wanting to bother with Tommy.
Tommy stood still for a second in fear but a couple of minutes later nothing besides the stillness of the water, nothing had happened. It appeared Wilbur just went back to his den. He tried calling back Wilbur, but nothing worked. And this went on for days, Wilbur only coming out for training for his upcoming performance or food.
Tommy didn’t like the look of things, his excitement for working there slowly leaving him, every day was just hoping Wilbur would communicate with him, didn’t Mers tend to bond with humans?
Wilbur found this new human that was around, very annoying. Every day the human would try to touch or talk to him, and he wanted nothing to do with it, every time he was called, he’d just ignore it. Why should he have to communicate with something that wasn’t necessary? He’s never known this human in his life and all humans were all the same, selfish.
It was finally performance day; he would finally get to perform with Wilbur maybe it was a chance he could bond with him! That wasn’t how the day went, it was amazing! But he just sat around keeping watch on things, he just had to feed Wilbur the occasional treat as %&*£! Did all the work. He knew he couldn’t be too mad, but he thought it would be more exciting than this.
After the show, $%*£! seemed quite pissed off with how Wilbur performed today, but Wilbur did amazing! Why was he yelling at him? Was it not up to standard? But that wasn’t quite the case, £$%!$ smelt like alcohol and his words were slurred and movements clumsily made. Wilbur seemed to notice this himself and was quite pissed off himself.
“WHY CAN’T YOU JUST DO YOUR STUPID JOB YOU STUPID FISH!?”. He then slapped Wilbur in the face, Wilbur raised a claw to where he was hit but didn’t seem too affected by it. Wilbur growled in response, his face in a predatory look but he did not attempt to attack the man.
Tommy was shocked, to say the least, not only that but pissed off. Tommy always had an urge to protect, even those he wasn’t close to, but he’d still protect people who needed it.
“Hey! Who are you to hit him like that?! He didn’t do shit to you!” He yelled. £$%!* looked to Tommy with a face of pure rage, Tommy had badly pissed him off.
Wilbur dove back into the water as the two argued, it was a back-and-forth heated argument. Which eventually lead to the man trying to punch Tommy. Tommy evaded it but then he the man, made a different move, he pushed Tommy into the water.
Water filled Tommy’s lungs, the water dragging him into its depths, he tried swimming back upward but every try he couldn’t swim back up and he continued to sink. As he kept trying, a ‘swoosh’ sound filled his ears and the water moved. In his vision was Wilbur coming towards him as he lost conciseness.

Micro-mermaid Chenera Part 1
Tumblr media
So, I know I'm, like two months late for Mermay, BUT. I had this amazing dream about micro-mermaids.
So hear me out- mermaids- half fish half human right? Deep sea mermaids/sirens would get HUGE to combat the pressure and stuff right? Well take it the other direction tiny pools in the amazon or the tropics, where we find guppies and betas and little very vibrant, very little fish but with a fantasy twist- micro-mermaids. Adults as big as your fingers, with kids and babies the size of your fingertips and finger nails, based on real fish, like betas, guppies, oscars, mollys, tetras and the like.
My mom ALWAYS kept at least one fish tank growing up, usually fresh water, one time she kept a brackish tank too, saltwater tanks were always too pricy for us BUT SO PRETTY TO STARE AT- AT THE FISH STORES. It's a life long hobby for her that she passed down to at least one of my sisters, my other sister is into guppies and betas almost exclusively and the different kinds and colors just within those two varieties are almost endless. And watching fish swim in a beautiful and healthy fish tank is documented to help out mentally and ease anxiety and even depression. Imagine what it would be like to have a tank of micro mermaids! Especially multiple kinds the way most will have multiple kinds of fish in a tank. I also got the idea from watching a documentary about how TINY little seahorses can be and of course My Little Mermaid- inner tween said 'tiny seahorse needs tiny micro-mermaid to ride it!' And of course seahorses especially are notoriously difficult to keep in captivity. If micro-mermaids were real, I'd imagine the same kind of thing. An expensive hobby that most would dump money into just for the privlidge of having their own wonder of nature.
And just like we have fish stores and fish breeders, think micro-mermaid breeders. Some are really good, others can be crappy, and this story follows a responsible, loving breeder, (more or less based on my mom who I love immesurably)
But me, being...well me, I can't write anything and not have a bit of angst, a good pinch of romance, eventual consentual smutty goodness and eventual happily ever afters. So...heads up.
Also since little fish tend to have shortened lifespans of only a few years, I'd imagine a micro-mermaid's lifespan would be similar in that they'd be shortened as well, so when you read cycles, that's in days. But also don't think of it as to the mermaids being years, if a micro-mermaid is 22 cycles, aka 22 days old, it's approxomately 11 years old in human terms so these guys are literally babies and kids when we meet them and get to watch them 'grow up' so to speak. So again, cycles=days divided in half= human years as point of reference.
But considering most merfolk in the ocean would live for who knows how long- if the average beta can live 2-5 years, lets say micro-mermaids can live to be 5-8 years old. Which compared to most little freshwater fish, is still, practically ancient. time passes differently for different beings, like dog years/human years/elven years kind of thing.
Cool? Cool. Let's dive in! (pun intended)
Micro-Mermaid
Chenera
Part 1
Ethel watched with baited breath from outside the glass as your parents gently used their billowy fins to circulate fresh oxygenated water across their eggs that had they laid in their small cave, made out of a large, fancy geode that Ethel had put into their tank to use as their cave to lay and hatch their young, the pockets of facets in the geode assisting to keep the eggs secure so that they would stay put and hatch successfully.
Ethel was a micro-mermaid breeder, and your parents were considered “royal chameleon” merfolk, a breed made special in that they could, like a chameleon, change their colors to suit their environment, but their fin structure and body confirmation was as if you crossed a beta with a mermaid, but in the micro scale, their large, billowy fins, long hair and plump bodies, an ethereal ideal for the subspecies.
And at a certain stage in their lives, she would put the adolescents into a much brighter colored tank, with things like hunks of gold and platinum and special rocks surrounded by color shifting fabrics on the outside of the glass so that the adolescents would always change into fancy, bright colors with precious metal accents and shifts of colors and special effects to their fins so that they could attract an equally colorful, healthy and vibrant mate and therefore, be worth much more on the market to enhance already immaculate genetics.
Ethel’s other tanks had schools of other micro mermaids of all kinds, from guppies, oscars, swordtails, molly’s, tetras and the like. Ethel was quite the collector and seemed to have every variety of micro mermaid both in nature and that could be bred in captivity and she was highly sought after in the industry because she treated each micro mermaid with the same tender loving care that she would treat her own children, if she had ever got to have them and her home might as well have been a mini aquarium since she ran one of the high end, micro-mermaid aquariums in the city and her home was where she bred the majority of her stock and her personal favorites that she was especially attached to.
Ethel preferred to sell mated pairs of micro-mermaids since micro mermaids preferred to mate for life but others preferred the “harem method” having a few females to a single male to get more clutches of eggs and thus, more micro-mermaids to sell since all the females could be laying clutches of eggs but that was usually harder on the female since she would have to care for the eggs mostly on her own since the male’s attention would be divided among all the clutches of eggs and even in the harem style, the male would prefer the company of his favorite and thus her eggs as well, and while that method got more micro-mermaids in volume, it usually always lacked in quality, the micro-mermaids would be slim, aggressively competitive and prey driven and would only live half as long, but wild caught micro-mermaids usually died before they could produce a clutch in captivity and capturing wild micro-mermaid clutches could be almost impossible since they usually hid them so well. Especially since male micro-mermaids could be very territorial once as mated adults. But before the mating process as adults, males could be housed together as kids and teens while in captivity.
Ethel had one particular tank though where she called it the “odds and ends” tank, where usually the last of her older micro-mermaids had clutches and died before the eggs could fully develop, where she would move the clutches into the large tank to be cared for by the community, something like an orphanarium for micro-mermaids that had a little bit of everything in it and to see so many varied individuals, and sometimes divided off into schools, it was one of her favorites to sit and watch and drink her tea.
She would even get clutches from other breeders, who would usually get overwhelmed or would run out of funds to keep the tanks going since micro-mermaids could be a very expensive hobby because they had a very specific and very demanding feeding and housing requirements depending on the subspecies, the salt water varieties being the most so. But in this particular room, was the “freshies”, she had other rooms in her house, the “brackies” or brackish water types, and her most coveted, the “salties” that room she kept under lock and key since the occupants of that room were worth thousands of dollars each and everything had to be controlled specifically and carefully.
Ethel usually had the laying and hatching process down to a meticulous science, she liked to keep her tanks at a specific temperature for the “incubation” process, where the eggs themselves would incubate at what Ethel had found over the years- was the “perfect” temperature so that almost all the eggs would hatch, the adults would be comfortable, but at the same time, the food she would put into the tanks to feed the micro-mermaids would not rot and attract flies or other scavengers who would try to fly into the house and prey not only on the mico-mermaid’s food but on the micro mermaids themselves.
You were one of the first to hatch, the egg’s shell breaking to allow you to break free as you squirmed out and into your father’s hands before he caught a few of your siblings who did the same before he cooed to you and greeted you happily as you opened your big eyes up at him and snuggled into his chest before he waited for your siblings to get their first and only milk from your mother, that would set up your gut to eat for a lifetime, before you were swapped out with your siblings and once you had your first milk, then you were brought up to the surface to get just a small breath of air so your air bladders would be filled and so you could navigate the whole tank easily before both of your parents touched your head, and the heads of all your siblings to the gold nugget in the tank so that all of you would have golden heads and hair, a trait that both your parents and Ethel prided themselves on.
It also served as a marker for which group you came from, your parents were the “gold standard” of the subspecies of beta-micro-mermaids. And other pairs had different metals or different colored stones so that each pair and their children would have that “mark” to signify which ones came from which parents for future breeding purposes, so that just by looks, they could decipher your genetics instead of having to go to the master gentics manual to decipher it all the time.
Now with the air in your air bladder and your first milk in your system, now your life fully began as you fully woke up and became conscious and thus wriggly and your siblings began exploring the tank as Ethel sprinkled in “baby bits” which was a composite of larve, krill, mackerel, anchovy, feeder-fish as well as algae as you and your siblings happily began “hunting” your first real meal, some of them using the surprise attack, whereas you and a few of your other siblings used the “stalking” method, hiding behind the roots and foliage of the plants at the top of the tank before you “pounced” and grabbed ahold of your favorite little bit and bit down into it, like a big loaf of bread that got softer to eat the more it was in the water as your tiny little teeth helping you eat it as you chewed it and held it between your two tiny hands and swam down back down to the bottom and sat in the soft sandy area, which was affectionately known as “the sand pit” with your other siblings who had hatched within the last few moments as your parents were busy helping the others that were hatching and repeating the process over and over until the whole clutch hatched.
“Well hello there beauties!” Ethel greeted as she waived with a big smile as you looked over and while your first instinct was to freeze and change into the color of your surroundings, to see your parents waiving back seemed to relax the rest of you.
“It’s ok, that’s Ethel, she’s the one who takes care of us and feeds us.” Your parents introduced before you used your tiny hands to waive back like your parents had as Ethel’s smile grew wider and more excited before she sprinkled in more “baby bits” for your siblings that would be hatching in the next few hours before she left and went to her other tanks to check up on the couples and the other clutches of eggs to repeat her process as she then tried to take notes of the other hatchlings and trying to count to see how many had hatched that day and once you were all full, you piled up in the silky soft sand to take your first rest from your first full day.
Since micro-mermaids aged quickly, it was only a few weeks and all of you had grown into playful rambunctious kids, swimming and chasing each other around the tank, building up strength and stamina, Ethel had turned the temperature of the tank down to a cooler temperature to incite your appetite and help you bulk up and gain a layer of fat over your buddening muscle and your parents had given all of you names to keep you accounted for as you learned language and all the various kinds of communication, at this point in time, all of you had the same gold heads and hair but could take on the colors of your surroundings so that some of you took on the sandy color of the “sand pit” or others had taken on the green color of the foliage of the plants that grew in the tank or the colorful geode and if it wasn’t for your gold heads, Ethel would have the hardest time finding any you in the tank besides your parent's who's colors for the most part had "fixed" into permanant colors. Your mother a colorful pearlescent, your father a striking metalic green, blue, purple and black.
The very few eggs that didn’t make it, your parents had given to Ethel to dispose of respectfully so as not to incite cannibalism and in the exchange you each got to touch Ethel's larger, but wrinkled hand and had carressed it as Ethel cooed at you, watching you all fondly and noting each one's unique colors and personality.
You had been one of the ones who liked to play in the foliage and plants at the top of the tank, often leaping out of the water to splash in the water at the top of the tank, a few times, hitting the lid, at first, it was on accident, then it was on purpose, to let Ethel know that you and your family were hungry as Ethel often chuckled at your antics when you would watch her make her rounds and feed the rest of the tanks.
“Who is keeping who here?” She would often chortle as she laid a few pieces of raw mackerel into the tank to watch your parents, you and your siblings, use little shards as "weapons" from the geode as well as little pieces of bones from previous meals to stab and attack the pieces and devour it, often having to fish out the bones out later with her little net. Micro-beta-mermaids had one of the most demanding and specific diets whereas the others wouldn't be so picky. But the better the food now, the better quality the micro-beta mermaid and better health and long life you would enjoy in later life. For Ethel, it was worth the money, time and effort to make sure each little being thrived the best they could.
Ethel's younger "adopted children" who she employed were more tech savy and had cameras set up on Ethel's most beautiful tanks with the more precious and prized occupants and set up a YouTube channel and live feed channels and seeing baby micro-mermaid babies hatch was always popular and Ethel's business boomed.
And while Ethel didn’t have children of her own, she seemed to adopt many who came into the micro-mermaid hobby and you saw many of the same people, most who worked for her would come and check up on Ethel on her days off and bring their children who often stared with big, starry eyes at you and your siblings as well as the others so that all of you got used to seeing different people so that when you would eventually be mated up, being moved into the store front wouldn’t be that big of a deal to you. It had been a tried and true method for Ethel for the last forty years and most followed her excelent example.
Then, one day, a small group fairies broke into the place and roused you from your sleep as you saw the glittering glows move around the room as you left the sleep pile in the sand pit to see what was going on and swam to the top and by now, you had grown big and strong enough to lift the lid as you cracked it open just enough to see better. But that seemed to be just what another was waiting for as you were grabbed and yanked from the tank as you screamed, all the water in your lungs splashing out as you watched in horror as other curious ones had also been yanked from their tanks and were being moved to a large plastic bag with hardly any water in it, as you squirmed and thrashed and took your little stone pick like blade that you always had tucked into the longer scales around your tailfin and stabbed at the vicious creature trying to fly you to the bag as the bag was picked up and several fairies were trying to fly it out of the house.
But your attempts to free yourself from it's grasp worked, it let you go and you thankfully landed onto the back of the other fairy, pick first so as to stab it by the heart, before you bounced off of it’s back into another lid of the tank, this tank being the odds and ends one, but the force of you hitting the fairy, bouncing off the fairy, and hitting the lid- shut the lid to keep anything else from getting in or out and had actually drowned the little vicious fairy trying to steal what it could from that tank and in the darkness, you swam until you felt the gravel of the bottom of the tank and swam until you found the deepest depression, under another cave and hid yourself in the darkness, using it’s dark nature to turn yourself as black as the night’s darkness itself, except for your gold head and hair which you used to hide in the deepest part of the little crevice like cave, moving the gravel around under it to make room for you to ball yourself into.
Come morning Ethel awoke to the horror to see that her home had come under attack as none of the micro-merfolk would come up from the bottom of the tank as she opened all the tanks and once opened the odds and end’s tank to see the drowned fairy floating on the top which caused rage to fill her as she knew that someone or something had incited the fairies of all beings to break in and steal her precious stock as she immediately tried to do some damage control and try to figure out who and what was taken as it seemed each tank had micro-merfolk-children missing because a full adult would have been too big and too strong to steal and would have drowned whoever or whatever might have tried to take them as she went to her other rooms, the brackish room was thankfully locked, but she could see little scratches and claw marks at the doors and especially around the saltwater room. But the freshies were in her livingroom and thus, open to the rest of the house, that’s why it got hit. Almost all the tanks were missing at least one child, the name of each child missing being written in the little bit of algae that had accumalated on the glass since the last cleaning as Ethel used a big magnifying glass to see it and then translate it from the merfolk's language as Ethel just kept crying, her tears streaking down her wrinkled and weathered face and falling onto her reading glasses.
Ethel offered her condolences to the families that lost little ones and made a memorial for the ones who had been taken and fed all the tanks a “funeral” meal, which was the most expensive and most comforting food she could as she made some calls to her friends and business partners and employees, as well as the police to see what could be done as soon the police arrived and detectives arrived along with all of Ethel's friends and neighbors came to give Ethel comfort as the police and investigators tried to document the break in and get statements from everyone about the theft and make notes so that Ethel, who had each and every single one of her micro-merfolk insured, could contact her insurance company and begin the claim process.
Meanwhile Nona had awoken to see a couple of his adopted siblings had been attempted to be taken but something had shut the lid on the fairy so their particular tank had survived from losing anyone. Although with it being the odds and ends tank, not much of really high value was in the tank to begin with. But looking out over to the other tanks in the room, he could see that the other tanks were mourning the loss of their own as the police were there, although they were finishing up the investigation and leaving with the drowned fairy and other pictures as proof of what had happened. But that also meant that they got a whole raw mackerel for the whole tank as everyone was feasting on it while he noticed movement out of the corner of his eye, something gold - flashing, catching the light before it disappeared again.
He paused in eating and took off a hunk and went over to where he thought he saw the glint of gold and heard the gravel move under the cave before he got down on his belly and peered into the crevis under cave that was it's own little cave he supposed but he didn’t see anything but black but felt the most subtle pressure wave, as if something was moving around in the crevice under the cave. He took a chance and simply set the hunk of mackerel down at the mouth of the cave and went back a fair distance to see if anything would come out and take it and hid behind the base of one of the plants and waited a few long moments before he could just barely see a small glimmer of gold again, before a small, light sandy colored hand attached to a small goldish sandy colored arm reach out and grab the bit of mackerel before it quickly took it back into the crevice and he could have sworn he heard munching sounds of someone eating it.
He quickly went back to the whole mackerel and tried to swipe a larger piece and carry it back to the crevice and tore it into two pieces and laid one at the mouth again as he slowly chewed on the other half, only he didn’t swim away, instead he sat and tried to peer in to see what was in there before he saw a glimmer of gold then it quickly vanished.
It was definitely another micro-merperson. He just had never seen anyone like it before.
“Hello?” He called into the crevice but you were still too scared to venture any closer.
“Are you ok in there? Are you hurt? What’s your name?” He asked but instead you just tried to sink down into the darkness. The water was different in this tank. It didn’t smell or taste like home. It was foreign to you and you didn’t know what tank you had fallen into. You knew some micro-merpeople did not tolerate intruders and you were afraid that if you ventured out, you would be attacked, you were unarmed and only an elder child, you were no match for an adult or even subadult.
So instead, Nona finished his hunk of mackerel and gently used his colorful tail fin to push the rest of it into the crevice before you took the offered piece and ate that too, not knowing when you would get another chance to eat again.
“See? I’m not gonna hurt you. But I just really want to know if you’re ok. Are you’re ok in there?” Nona asked worriedly as he came in and you backed up as far as you could and tried to make yourself as small as you could, folding up your own billowing fins as small as they could be before he came in and started gently grasping around the crevice for you.
“It’s ok, I promise it’s ok. I’m not going to hurt you.” Nona tried to reassure you as his fingertips grazed your fin and you quickly dove to another corner of the crevice to get away from him, but your movement caused the little bit of light to glint of your golden head and the shimmering black of your body as you moved and Nona could hear your labored breathing as he felt the water move around as you moved and settled again before he found the back of the cave and stretched out his hands as wide as he could and began to go forward again before you dove for the other corner on the other side, this time your outline was shown against the light coming in from the mouth of the crevice and all Nona saw was gold from your head, down your hair before it flowed into a shimmering pitch black again before Nona realized that you were no bigger than he was, in fact you were a little smaller than him and the scent on the water told him you weren’t from this tank, from another but he couldn’t recognize the scent because a clutch had never come into this tank from yours before. You were a kid, obviously from another tank, you must have been dropped in by the fairy, having grabbed you from another tank and trying to grab a second from his own tank.
“My name is Nona, and I’m 22 cycles old and we’re in the odd’s tank. You’re ok, you’re safe, no one is going to hurt you, not in this tank. Ethel’s really good about if there are any bullies, she pulls them out and puts them in the bully tank. You are not in the bully tank so you’re safe. I promise you, you’re safe. No one is going to hurt you. I won’t hurt you and I won’t let anyone or anything hurt you either.” Nona tried to reassure you as he came forward again as he closed his eyes and focused on the sounds of your breathing and even he could feel your fast heart rate pulse in the small crevice’s water, this time his hands forming an open reaching motion before his hands settled on your face and jaw before he opened his eyes to see two gold ones blinking back at him rapidly as he could feel your fast heart rate stay fast before it eventually started to slow before he chanced a small swipe of his thumbs on the apples of your cheeks as he just stared in awed wonder at you before you finally broke down and flung yourself at him and pinned him down onto the floor of the crevice, clinging to him and crying.
“It was awful, I saw all these pretty moving lights, it was glowing and glittering like the jewels do only it was from on the outside and I swam up to the top of the tank and once I did I was yanked out of the water and my mother always told me to keep a weapon in my tail so I took it and I stabbed at it as much as I could and it dropped me and I hit another fairy and I lost my blade and I fell down and I could feel the other monster that was at the top begin to drown but I just dove down and tried to find the safest spot I could but I didn’t know what tank I’m in and I thought I was in one of the shark tanks and I thought if I left, I was gonna get eaten!” You wailed into his chest as he wrapped his arms around you and comforted you.
“Do you know what tank you’re from?” He asked.
“No, I just know that my parent’s names are Avarian and Miralia.” You shook your head no.
“Ok, well I’m sure when Ethel cames back for dinner, once she sees you, she’ll know which tank to return you too so you can be with your family.” Nona consoled you.
He had never felt another mergirl’s hair as soft as yours, it was like it was softer than anything he had ever felt before, or felt one who was so young to have hair so as long, it went to your tail and usually only the elder micro-mermaids had hair that long but they kept it in braids to keep it from being tangled. But you were also a bit heavier than most girls would be at your age and your fins were bigger than his! He was a delta guppy micro-merman himself, known for their massive and colorful tails but his own was dwarfed by yours.
“So, what’s your name?” He asked again.
“Chenera.” You sniffled.
“Well it’s nice to meet you Chenera, like I said, my name is Nona.” He repeated.
“Do you know how old you are?” He asked
“I think only 19 cycles, 20, counting today.”
“Ok, so you’re younger than me.” Nona realized.
“Are you sure you’re ok? You’re not hurt or anything?” He asked again.
“I am.” You finally admitted as you could already tell there was bruising all over you and scratches from that vicious fairy’s claws.
“Ok, well do you want to go to the healer or do you want the healer to come to you?” He asked.
“Can they come here? I don’t want to leave.” You admitted.
“Ok, well, stay here then, and I’ll go get them, I’ll be right back ok? Two flicks of a tail.” He reassured you before he gently eased you off of him before you curled in on yourself in the darkness and he got out and raced towards the eldest merperson in the tank, who was especially inept at healing magic.
“I found someone.” He said as he tugged on her arm as she sat and ate the head of the mackerel, the best part of the fish.
“Found who?” She asked.
“The fairy that drowned in our tank, trying to steal the little ones, it was carrying another from another tank, she got away and hid under the big cave where we keep the half clutches. She got really hurt. Her body is all puffy.
“If she’s a goldfish micro- her body should be a little puffy.” She argued.
“She’s not like any other goldfish micro. She’s something I’ve never seen or smelled before.” He insisted.
“She’s hurt, she’s scared, she’s younger than me by a few cycles, she’s in the wrong tank and thinks if she leaves, she’s gonna get eaten. It took a lot just for me to get her to talk to me. Her name is Chenera, and she doesn’t know what tank she’s from. All she knows is her parent’s names. She says she’s hurt, she needs you.” Nona pleaded desperately.
“Ok, ok, I’m coming, I’m coming.” She finally relented before Nona practically dragged her to the mouth of the crevice.
“She must be a young one to fit inside here.” The elder- Thya noted.
“Chenera, I have the healer here, but she can’t fit in there, can you just come to the mouth of the cave so she can see you?” Nona asked before he stuck his upper body inside.
“It’s ok, she’s not going to eat you.” Nona reassured you.
“Here, I wouldn’t introduce you to anyone dangerous. Take my hand, it’s going to be ok.” Nona encouraged as he reached his hand out to you before you tentatively took it and he gently guided you to the mouth before you stuck your head out, your long golden hair suddenly picking up the cross current and being taken away in that.
“Oh my gills.” Thya murmured in awe.
“Hey Chenera was it? Hi, I’m Thya, I’m the eldest mermaid here and the healer of the tank, can you show me what hurts?” She asked.
“My head, and my back and, my arms, and most of my tail, just, everything.” You answered as you looked from her to Nona, back to her worriedly.
“Nona, go get Abaria and Fonta, she’ll need a mother’s touch.” Thya urged Nona but your tightened your grip on his hand ,kept him from going.
“Here darling, take my hand, let him go get some more help, he’ll be right back ok?” Thya offered as she offered her own hand to you before Nona simply put his hand next to hers so it wouldn’t take much for you to let go of him and hold onto her before you hesitantly transferred your hand from Nona’s to hers before he quickly swam away again and came back with three mother looking figures, the two Thya suggested and his own.
“Oh you poor thing! Did that vicious fairy drop you into here?” Abaria asked as she came and sat closest to you as the other mothers crowded around you as you nodded.
“Well you’re in the best tank in the place, we’re all found family here. No one is going to hurt you here. It’s ok to come out. Or are you too hurt to come out?” They asked.
“Come here darling. It’s ok. I know you must miss your mom something awful, but until we get you sorted out, I’m adopting you and I can be your mom until you’re reunited with your other one ok?” Abaria offered before you looked from Abaria back to Nona.
“She’s one of the best moms in the tank besides my own. She’s mom to most of the kids in the tank and she takes care of everyone like she laid the eggs herself.” Nona reassured you before you hesitantly crawled out of the crevice as the others scooted back so that all of you could come out.
“My goodness, how did all of you fit in there?” Thya asked once you were out and your fins unfurled. You had bigger fins than the adults even.
“Like this.” You contracted all your fins until it was just your body and a thin folded fin was behind you.
“You’re a plump little thing aren’t you?” Fonta noted.
“Not any more than any of my siblings, we’re all shaped like this.” You defended, unfurling your fins to cover yourself- self consciously as you pouted under her scruitinging.
“Well that’s good, that means that you and your siblings are well cared for and are fed well. And with a head like yours but a body like yours, it’s hard to know what tank you’re from.” Abaria sighed with an apologetic smile as she pet your head, feeling your silky soft hair before the other kids came around to curiously look to see you, all of them of different ages, some as young as three cycles and some as old as 30, one of the oscar-micro-mermaids, who was 27 cycles, already seeing all he needed to see, you were, in his opinion, the prettiest girl in the tank, therefore, you were going to be his future mate as the other girls in the tank looked at you with both weary suspicion, jealousy and a bit of pity because you clearly didn’t belong in the tank and with as black as you were form the chest down, you stuck out like a sick fin, but with a head and hair like gold, it was still a beautiful combination.
“Who’s that?” They asked.
“The fairy that attacked us last night, took her from her home tank and dropped her in here while they were trying to steal you guys.” Thya answered them.
“She didn’t fall from the fairy that came into our tank, she fell from way higher, like another was carrying her from way higher, she hit the fairy, hit them into the water, bounced off of their back, hit the lid and made the lid close and drowned the fairy, she saved us.” The kids that had been involved offered.
“Oh my gils, is that what happened?” They asked you as you nodded yes as Thya used the glowing of her hands to highlight all your bruises and cuts so that most of body glowed blue from injuries before she went through and healed each one, and noticed that the black then took on a midnight blue appearance, which she had never seen before and puzzled everyone around you.
“Oh you poor baby, come here.” Abaria gathered you into her arms and comforted you, and held you to her chest and gently rocked you comfortingly once your upper body was healed while Thya worked on your tail.
But sadly, Ethel left to go to work before the others could grab her attention. You spent the rest of the day talking to Thya and Abaria about what your tank looked like and what the names of your siblings were as it was clear to them that you were one of the more ‘special’ tanks but because of your coloring, you didn’t look like any of the other tanks that they could see from there.
By night time, though, the automatic feeders fed all the inhabitants of all the tanks and then not long after, the lights shut off, signalling it was time for bed.
But when Ethel came home late, the movement of her and her using the flashlight in her phone to make her way to her bedroom, was too much like the fairy’s light as you quickly squirmed out of the sleep pile and dove for that crevice again, hiding away as she passed and went to bed herself but once again, you were scared of coming out.
Your squirming had caused Nona to wake up again since he was nestled close to you, his hand in yours as his own instincts told him to stay put on the bottom of the tank until the light passed by but when he looked over to see where you had been sleeping with Abaria, her mate and their brood, you were gone but he had a feeling he’d know where to find you.
But the thought of sleeping on the gravel instead of the soft sand just hurt him to think about, so he swam around and collected bits of moss and leaves so he would cover the inside of that crevice so you would have a comfortable place to sleep for the night at least.
“Chenera,” Nona whispered when he came closer.
“Nona?” You asked as your head peeked out and saw him.
“A cave under a cave surrounded by gravel is no place to spend the night. Here, all this should make it a little more comfortable at least.” He offered what he had collected before you smiled gratefully at him, your white pearly teeth and golden head a sharp and beautiful contrast to the darkness before he passed each thing to you before you had Nona come in and help you to move even more of the gravel out of the way and dig down so that there was a deeper and more comfortable depression inside before Nona and you set the leaves down first and used the moss to make something of pillow before you laid down and refused to let go of Nona’s hand.
“Can you please stay here with me?” You asked, your big golden eyes too much for him to resist, even at his relatively young age before he laid down beside you, keeping himself between the mouth of the crevice and you as you cuddled into his chest, your fins wrapping around him as his’ tried to wrap around you in turn as he used his arm as your pillow as your hair was almost like a blanket for both of you as your colors changed again, a dark emerald, shimmering green now with black and gold as you settled down before he soon felt you relax completely and fall asleep before he did the same.

Genji Heavy Industries (Part 6) The Red Sea
This is my fiction writing. There is no scene like this in the novel or the game. But it could have been there.
Enjoy!
Because it involved your abilities, the earthquake preparedness system of Tokyo interested you. You understood that if enough seismic activity were detected, the Early Warning system would activate, giving more people time to seek safety from the seismic activity that could be generated by Soul Skill Eruption. So now, in the hopes of causing as few casualties as possible, you increase the pressure on the fault line at a carefully measured pace taking minutes, rather than seconds to reach the point of no return, where the pressure you were exerting would be released and the earth would move.
As you grit your teeth in the dark of your improvised shelter of concrete and mud and exert the extreme forces of the earth, You think of Chu Zihang, Caesar, and Lu Mingfei. By this time, Chu Zihang and Caesar would know you were missing and start to look for you. Perhaps they would be trying to find this Hell floor but they wouldn’t know it even existed. It was like you had truly gone into a bottomless pit. They could run around forever and never find you.
But you hoped that Caesar would trust you to make your way out through the underground on your own without his help and get to safety. Once the earthquake hit, it would throw the Hydra in disarray. They would be too busy fighting monsters and escaping themselves to even notice the boys. They could explode the Kaguya computer core and blow things up, as many things that would make him happy to make them pay the debt for Ms. Makoto.
Your smile fades and you huff out a little whimper of a laugh. That would be way too easy and in his leisure mind, he would definitely waste time trying to find you.
All across Tokyo, television programs were interrupted with a message window showing the epicenter of an earthquake under Tokyo. On the radio, two sets of chimes sounded, followed by a voice announcement in Japanese. “This is an Earthquake Early Warning. Please prepare for powerful tremors!” Japanese major mobile phone carriers blast out text messages urging the citizens across the city to take cover now!
People flooded the streets in panic, rushing to shelters and emptying out highrises. Traffic turned from neat rows of shining cars to a snarled mess, as people panicked and collided. Everywhere, hundreds of thousands of feet pounded, creating vibrations on their own.
Five seconds later, it hit.
To most people's eyes, skyscrapers stood still on the ground, unmoving. But this is only an illusion. Skyscrapers use steel as the skeleton. The physical properties of steel are not only strong, but also flexible.  When under pressure from an external force it will naturally bend to unload the force, and then rebound. At the height of the Genji Heavy Industry building, in windy weather, the top floor will also be given a few dozen centimeters of sway. A few dozen centimeters compared to the height of the Genji Heavy Industry is insignificant. The general public will not use laser rangefinder and other sophisticated equipment to observe it, so this sway is usually ignored. But in a high-intensity earthquake, all the skyscrapers in Shinjuku district swayed the moment the shock wave passed through, like a cedar forest in a gale.
You hold your breath in your own minishelter, feeling the pull of the enormous forces being exerted on these buildings. Each sway was a potential disaster that could mean hundreds, even thousands of lives lost, but the results were out of your hands now. Like a waiter bumping a table full of delicate crystalware, all you could do was observe the whole city as it jostled and pray.
You’re shaking from fear, exhaustion, and mental fatigue, but also lack of oxygen. The shelter was watertight as well as air tight. You force open a small hole in the top and peer out. You had formed a dome shaped earthen shelter for yourself that held back the water and shielded you from falling debris. Fresh air poured in the smell of seawater and fish.
Z was gone. All around you the whole basement was flooded save for the section surrounded by your little levee. A few red emergency lights illuminated the shattered tank and bits of glass block and made them look like you were floating in an extremely large pool of blood.   The tank wall was gone and the room that was already large now seemed more like a baseball stadium in size.
Through your spiritual feelers, you could detect the frequency of vibrations that your mind could interpret as sound. Many muffled voices were desperately screaming and yelling and pounding on doors.
There were still so many people in this building. Why had they not evacuated? The ground was full of tension. Aftershocks were sure to come and there was no way you could stop them. These people needed to get to shelter! Hydra were so organized even by Japanese standards. This disarray was unusual.
You’re struck with a sudden vertigo and dizziness. Your mind becomes aware of the smallness of your body, while at the same time it is still aware of the vast depth of the earth beneath you. You try to take deep breaths against the wave of nausea but the food you ate in the elevator comes up in a single heave. You lay down against the levee and clutch your head against the stabbing behind your eyes. Cluster headaches were normal and actually a good sign that the blood vessels in your head were still working. If you didn’t feel anything, it was likely you had lost too much brain function to ever recover. But they also made it impossible to move or think about escaping. After using such an apocalyptic force you were rendered as weak as a child.
You close your eyes and feel your tired brain rebound from your body back to the residual spiritual energy in the Earth. Every time your mind returns to the earth, you hear something strange. It was as if a long river of metal was flowing underground and scraping against rock, except his metal river hissed with powerful breath. It growled with menace at the same time it breathed, as though there were many of them.
Something massive was moving near Tokyo. It was underground. It was alive.
In that moment, another sound hits you, a loud explosion, followed by gunfire. This time it was much nearer by. The sound echoed down from the elevator shaft. Because it was connected to the building, these sounds were reverberating through the ground. By the time they reached you they were quite faint, but wherever they were coming from, it must have been a very loud noise.
Caesar and Chu Zihang could be engaging with the enemy, or maybe the Hydra were engaging with the monsters. Either way, you have to start making your way out.
The water surrounding you was going to be a problem. Any hole you made at this point would be immediately flooded. Before you could tunnel out, you needed to move the water away and drain it.
A movement catches your eye. One of the floating blocks of glass is spinning rapidly in the opposite direction from the other floating bits. Something knocked into it. You freeze, gasping in fear, and reach for your pistols. With shaking hands, you start to load them with mercury laden armor piercing rounds. Your eyes scan the dark water but every wave could be concealing a serpentine creature. The floating glass created their own ripples. Plus, you were surrounded by water.
A loose bit of metal detached from the glass wall of the tank. It fell, colliding with a piece of concrete slab sticking out of the water with a soft clang. A three meter long tail thrashed wildly and an invisible shape formed a clear wake in the deep water as fast as a jet ski. It exploded from the water. Its claws were like scythes and serrated. It’s golden scales were like copper in the crimson light.
The creature's upper body was six feet long, so that made it a good fifteen feet, enough to rival a saltwater crocodile. It lifted the piece of metal and bit down and the steel deformed between its teeth. Infuriated that this actually was not edible, it flung it high in the air where it twinkled for a moment before descending. After a few seconds, you hear a small splash somewhere else in the room. The beast screeches and dives in the water, heading for the splash it didn’t realize it made itself, soaking you in the process.
Huge, fierce, strong, reactive… stupid. You recall Z’s play with these creatures. They reacted to light and sound very strongly and they were also cannibals. The emergency lights largely meant that there was no power in this place and a quick glance upward at the now-still and silent ventilation fans seemed to suggest the same. The pumps and siphons that managed the tank were shut down. But that may not last either.
So long as that thing was swimming around there’s no way you’d be able to work. It had to die. You had your guns and your ammunition and you also had a little C4 and a detonator. You remove your trenchcoat and pin it to the levee with a pocket knife. Then you adhere a bit of the C4 to the coat. Once everything was set up. You whistle loudly.
The beast’s roar echoed and  you duck as low into the water as you can. It flies beneath the water toward the flapping windbreaker and seizes it, tearing it away from the knife and stuffing it down it’s throat. You press the detonator. It was so fast to swallow the bait that the C4 must have been half way down its throat. The lower half of the monster’s head shatters in a bloody spray and bits and pieces of it plunk into the water. The beast howls and chokes, still alive but unable to bite, only flailing about uselessly.
You’d scarcely begun to smile when the wake of something else slips by you. Fortunately you’d been standing still so it didn't notice you were there. Another monster of the same kind reared up out of the water and bit down on the other injured animal. While they were both distracted you ran away. Every step sent water slapping and splashing in all directions.
You were heading for the control panel. There was a long wiring run that ran up the wall through metal pipes attached by bracing. You should be able to climb it! You don’t dare look back but take a flying leap and hit the wall. Your fingertips just barely grasp the braces holding up the wiring run. When you look down, the uninjured sphinx is waving its claws just inches from your swaying feet.
But then it’s pulled back! The other sphinx with the half head is now missing part of its right arm but  has pulled your pursuer by the tail and slams its claws into its head piercing its eye while it screamed and flailed its forked tongue. It pulled the eye out. The nerve still dangled like a bloody root. It popped the eye into its upturned throat. It didn't need a lower jaw to eat that.
Using just the strength in your arms and shoulder, you pull yourself to the next brace. Soon you’re swinging precariously 20 feet in the air. From this vantage point you can see that under the water is a massive pile of glass and steel rubble. The water actually isn’t that deep and if you fell from this height, you would probably die due to impact with the debris. But at least now you could see the entire complex.
It looked like most of the sphinxes were gone from the cavern, only these two were left. But then the world goes blurry. Once again you’re hit with vertigo! You moan softly and squeeze your eyes shut as the room tilts and your mind reacts to movement in the earth. The ground was filled with great tension, like the tension a cold person feels right before they shiver.
Your eyes snap open. Aftershock!
You didn’t have much time. A powerful aftershock could easily shake you off the wiring run and kill you. There was a small ledge next to the ventilation fans. But it was a good distance from the last brace. You wouldn’t be able to just leap frog up to it.
The two beasts below were still locked in a battle but the one eyed monster was winning. Unable to bite and now missing a limb, the one injured by the C4 was grasped by its head and tail while its opponent ripped bloody chunks out of its flesh with its shining bald head.
It wasn’t even swallowing the meat. This was a vengeful tearing apart!.
Finally, it dropped the lifeless body into the water and turned back to you. It hissed, baring its red tipped fangs. It’s body undulated once and reached the wall. It climbed with spider-like alacrity, claws plunging straight into the concrete like it was soft mud. It only took a second to reach your height. It lashed out and you rocked away from it’s claws, coming inches from being disemboweled. It leaped to the side to pounce on you!
And it fell short. The single eye made it lose depth perception!
With a mighty heave you lift yourself upward by your arms. The flat of your foot smashes into its face and using that as a springboard you make it to the ventilation ledge!
The strong aftershock hit the Genji Heavy Building and pounded it. Cracks spread through the reinforced concrete structure, steel was shorn, water pipes burst, steam and cold wind filled the air. The monster was knocked off balance by the sudden quake and plunged twenty feet to be skewered by a piece of steel that was bent upward. It wiggled it’s long serpent body, curling silently like a worm on a hook for a few seconds before it began to scream, a single high pitched note. Over and over and over.
A single shot to the eye and it goes limp. You hold the gun at the ready, just in case another was needed, but there was no more sound.
You lie on the ledge to catch your breath. But you couldn’t rest. You weren’t done. You had to drain the water.
With what little residual spiritual energy you had left remaining in the earth, you use it to form a channel under the wall, forming a pipette that would hopefully lower the water level. You wave your hand and from a distance your eyes glow gold. Mud rolls in hills pushing the water towards the channel. It takes a long time, several minutes. Meanwhile, you can feel yourself getting more and more dizzy. More and more sleepy and less able to think.
An extremely loud sound banging and crashing is getting nearer and nearer. Something big was falling down the elevator shaft! It crashed with such force that the car folded like an accordion on and one door was blown out, flipped and landed with a loud splash.
Blood oozed from the resulting debris and a golden clawed hand fell limp. You take a few deep breaths and crawl back to the wiring pipe and slide down it easily. You cautiously sift your way through the debris.
By looking at the elevator shaft can feel the scale of the building, the elevator shaft of ordinary buildings are only three or four elevators, elevator shaft area of no more than twenty square meters, but the source of The levator shaft can accommodate more than a dozen elevators at the same time. So it has an area of more than a hundred square meters. In this one hundred square meters hundreds of high-strength angle steel columns stood in the middle of the steel crossbeam. This kind of high-rise building uses super high-speed elevators, and the metal cars pass up and down at a high speed of 5 meters per second, reminding people of the future cities in science fiction.
You sniffle. Red drops of blood come from your nose. You no longer had the strength to create a tunnel. But you could crawl up above ground and find a way out that way.
The elevator was pitch black and impossible to see inside like an endless starless sky. The idea of climbing up such a massive shaft would be impossible for an ordinary human. But even in your state of fatigue and pain, it wasn’t too far to go when it came to distance. It was just vertical.
You step over the dead sphinx. Its upper half was in the shape of a woman's body and it’s guts were torn out of it. It was missing limbs and the skin of its face was falling off in a flap. This beast was never a danger to you. It must have been torn to shreds and fallen. It was dead before it hit the ground bottom of the shaft. It served as a warning to you. It would not just be a matter of climbing the elevator shaft out of the Basement called Hell level. The elevator shaft was another level of Hell!
You check your weapons briefly, go to the back of the shaft where the rail created a sort of ladder and start climbing.

Hello! What are some easy/more tolerant frogs to start with frog keeping?
I’m interested in frogs but a little intimidated by them cause they’re so fragile and I don’t know if you have to treat their water.
Can you recommend some frogs and places where I can find good information about keeping them?
Hi! Frogs make awesome pets, and while they can certainly be fragile they can also be quite easy to please. There’s a lot of different species available, each with their own pros and cons. The best beginner species depends on who you are- for example, I’m confident that with proper research I could care for just about any terrestrial, burrowing frog. But I do not feel that way about dart frogs, I just feel like their care needs would not mesh well with my preferences and abilities. Yet I know people who keep dozens of darts but would not do well with a pacman frog!
So, here I will describe to you a few species that are a) relatively forgiving of care mistakes b) easy to find captive bred and c) commonly kept. Those three traits are usually what people are looking for in a beginner species!
For research- Speak to keepers and breeders, but be aware their care may not be the cream of the crop so think critically about their recommendations. Look for scientific papers on the species, especially ones that list habitat information! Local climate data for the areas where they are native is also great, and papers on species who live in the same habitat can help you find habitat information as well. If you’re on facebook, head over to “Advancing Amphibian Husbandry”! I am part of the admin team, and we do our best to promote high care standards backed by science and experience. I try to keep the files updated with scientific papers on commonly kept species, and I add new ones as I come across them :)
Without further ado-
1) Pacman frogs (genus Ceratophrys)
I love pacman frogs! Terrestrial burrowing frogs are, in my opinion, generally forgiving creatures. You want a lot of dirt, some places to hide, a heat and UV gradient, and a big water dish, and those are the basics! They can grow quite large and need big habitats, but most specimens will be very happy in a 40 breeder for life.
2) White’s tree frogs (Litoria caerulea)
Also known as dumpy frogs, these guys make a great first tree frog. The biggest drawback is their large size, meaning they need a big terrarium! But that size also makes them easier to safely handle when need be, and easier to spot for health monitoring. You’ll want to stuff the terrarium with things to climb and foliage to hide in, and they’ll be happy. Like all frogs, they need a big water dish available at all times.
3) African dwarf frogs (Hymenochirus boettgeri) and african clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis)
These are more like keeping fish than keeping frogs, because they’re fully aquatic. ADF are much smaller than ACF, which are large and can be aggressive. When small, the two are sometimes confused. They do best in species only tanks as they can both kill and be killed by fish, and their poor swimming and eyesight makes it easy for them to be outcompeted for food.
4) Fire belly toads (genus Bombina)
Bombina orientalis is I believe the most common species in captivity. These social little guys are semi aquatic, so they need room to swim as well as plenty of dry land. They’ll happily sing for you! I really love these frogs, they’re more active than many other species so if you want brightly colored critters and a tank with lots of movement they’re a great option to look into
5) Tinc dart frogs (Dendrobates tinctorius)
Dart frogs are tiny little guys which can lead to beginners shying away from them, but it’s definitely possible to keep darts as your first frog with proper research and guidance. They eat small food items like pinhead crickets and fruit flies, and need high humidity. But those are really the hardest aspects of their care. Tincs are usually one of the most recommended beginner darts, though different localities can be more or less sensitive. They’re also not the only good beginner dart frog, so there are plenty more options to explore if you want darts but tincs aren’t quite your speed.
These are just a few of the MANY species of frog available in the hobby. There are plenty more species that would make good first frogs! But now that you have a few to look into, you can begin narrowing down what would fit best into your lifestyle :) If you have further questions feel free to ask!

Ryunosuke Snippets - 2
••●══════••๏⊙๏••══════●••
Part 2
••●══════••๏⊙๏••══════●••
Ryunosuke sat in the large dining area of the free company, reading over a letter of his brother. Dante Origo, the free company’s chef was rumbling in the large kitchen, whipping up some delicious meal, humming a tune to himself. A small sigh escaped Ryunosuke before he could held it back. The chef’s ears were twitching, picking up the low sound even over the noise of boiling water. Ryunosuke scolded himself inwardly. How could he be so careless around a miqo’te? They had an excellent ability to hear so he really should have known better.
Apart from his outstanding ability to hear the free company’s chef had an impressing ability to pick up moods. Ryunosuke was engrossed in his letter, so he was a little startled when Dante suddenly placed a bowl of undon noodles in front of him, sitting down on the opposite bench. The broth smelled delicious and a happy smile flickered over the mage’s face. „Why? Thank you. I didn’t order anything…:“ The chef grinned, his tail waving from left to right. „You looked like you could need it“, the miqo’te replied, pointing to the letter, „news from home?“
Ryunosuke hummed noncommittal, tasting the noodles. They were undoubtedly good (mostly because Dante made a point to learn the favorite dishes of each company member), but they weren’t quite matching hingashian standards. There was no dithering around: Ryunosuke was homesick. He had actually been homesick for quite some time now and Shinnosuke’s letter had only added to it. His elder brother had informed him in the letter that there was a plot available for a small house in Shirogane. The mage had checked it out once he received the notice and it was a nice plot, but the ether flows weren’t as good as in Mists, but then again he had wandered around in the neighborhood, talking to the local merchants and it felt like home. It *was* home, the scent of the air, the hingashian tongue, the way the trees looked like, the architectural design - Ryunosuke was definitely homesick.
„Well, yes“, the mage replied, „actually my brother informed me that there is a plot available in Shirogane.“ The chef hummed, his face showing a longing look, „ah, I see. I’d love to have a small house that I could call my own. Where I could cook and grow vegetables, a market nearby, fresh seafood from the fisher boats. That would be nice.“ Ryunosuke tilted his head slightly and gave the chef a sharp look. He hadn’t been aware that the other longed so much for a house, but now that Dante was talking about it, he could envision the chef on the piece of land he owned at the moment. Ryunosuke was familiar with the way the ether flows and that’s why he knew that he must take the opportunity and sell the land to the free company’s chef.
Little did he know that this was the beginning of his very own odyssey to find his perfect home. While Dante seemed to be happy settling himself in Mists, Ryunosuke was struggling with his new home. The ether flows were not ideal and making him rather uncomfortable. Another chance opened one day to acquire a plot higher in the mountain and Ryunosuke went for that one. Firlionel wasn’t happy at all with all the moving, disliking too many changes at once, but he could see why Ryunosuke wasn’t happy about the second plot either.
Eventually the two decided to take a more structured approach and so they checked out every single plot available in the region of Shirogane. It was an entertaining search, at least for Ryunosuke, since he learned that there were obviously different kinds of waterfalls (good and bad ones. The ones without foam were categorized as the latter), while Firlionel couldn’t understand why Ryunosuke didn’t know about those facts. They were common sense - really!
Apart from the ether flows and *right* waterfall issues Ryunosuke wanted a slightly bigger house, but all the pieces of land that would be able to hold a middle sized house were lacking severely on one or more issues. They always came back to a small piece of land on the northeastern side of Shirogane with a stunning view at the sea, but also access to a tree that was inviting to mediate under it (and that was immediately approved by Climbs On Trees), the *right* waterfall (luckily it was a double fall, the first fall not matching Firlionel’s expectation) and a nice neighborhood. For once Ryunosuke was not confident that he would be able to acquire that particular piece of land. Who would move from this perfect place anyway?
Whether the twelve were in his favor or whether Firlionel had chatted the previous owner up (he was *very* good at chatting people up, mind!) Ryunosuke would probably never find out, but the plot was on sale only shortly after the mage had come to his final decision to acquire the land. He didn’t hesitate a second, buying the land, not heeding the price and once he had was the owner Firlionel and him started to rebuild his home.
It was surprising how everything fell into place this time. Right from the beginning Ryunosuke had the feeling that this time it was special, it was meant to be. He decided for a different facade, more elegant this time. Firlionel and him worked hand in hand on the garden design and the interior, thus fireflies were now inhabiting his garden (and miraculously staying), a fish tank was added inside, a second futon and Firlionel brought along a small box with different board games. Home. It finally felt like home and Ryunosuke felt peace in his heart.

Ornate Pacman Frog Care (Ceratophrys ornata)
Why are pacman frogs so popular? Their large size? Their voracious appetites? The many beautiful morphs they come in? All of the above, and more! Unfortunately, there are downsides to that popularity. Misinformation abounds, and their sit-and-wait lifestyle leads to small, minimalistic keeping. If you haven’t already, I wrote another article (How Can We Do Better By Pacman Frogs?) that addresses some of these misconceptions and more.
This care sheet is not intended to be used as the sole source for pacman care information, it is merely a guideline. It is important to always do further research of your own to determine the best way to care for your pacman frog. There are eight species of pacman frogs, plus hybrids. This article solely focuses on the ornate pacman frog. If you have a different species of pacman frog, please do further research into your species specifically, as they live in different habitats in the wild and may need different care.
Quick Stats
Species: Ceratophrys ornata Tank Size: 20 long minimum for a male (bigger is ideal), 40g breeder minimum for a female Size: 4.5 inch max for males, 6.5 inch max for females Sociability: must be kept alone, they will eat other frogs Heating: gradient. hot side around 75-85, can be turned off at night Humidity: soaking dish, keep soil damp, 70-80% humidity Lighting: Ferguson Zone 1 Diet: insects, can also be feed pinkie mice and frogs/lizards occasionally Origin: Pampas region of Argentina Lifespan: 10 years on average
Tumblr media
The native habitat of the ornate pacman frog is mostly subtropical grasslands and seasonal wetlands. There are few trees, just grasses and shrubs. They can also be found in irrigated cropland and ditches. Humidity stays pretty high around 70-80%. Yearly average temperatures range from 55 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Part of the pacman frog appeal is their adorable appearance. A typical ornate is primarily green, with brown spots on the back. Some red may be present as well. The ‘high red’ morph is just about the same, but with increased red coloration. Size of spots, intensity and spread of color, etc are all pretty variable. A male may reach a length of 4.5 inches, while females are larger and may get up to 6.5 inches. Smaller sizes are also common.
Minimum vivarium needs depend on the frog’s gender. Males are several inches smaller and can be kept in a 20 long minimum. The females are larger and would require a 40 breeder. Regardless, bigger is always better! Height is not very important except for as needed to safely provide heat and light, and to provide room for deep substrate. A few broad, sturdy objects that can be climbed will make a good addition and are recommended.
When it comes to substrate, eco earth, moss, or foam/paper towel are the popular options. However, these are not really the best choices. Paper towels are fine for quarantining, but pacman frogs love to burrow, so after quarantining, frogs should be switched to a loose soil substrate. Organic topsoil, sand, eco earth, leaf litter, clay, and some commercial reptile soils can be used as parts of a nice, quality substrate. Moss is okay, but not as the entire substrate. Substrate should be deep enough for the frog to burrow itself entirely.
Pacman frogs may destroy live plants, but hardy ones may be able to withstand a frog climbing over or burrowing under them. They will also need to tolerate high humidity and damp soil. Pothos, philodendron, spider plants, and dracaena are a few options to look into.
Pacman frogs like high humidity. When the soil gets dry, they may begin aestivation, burrowing deep into the soil and covering themselves in a protective layer of skin. Keep the soil damp, but not soaking, a drainage layer can help prevent this. Hydrating the soil directly may be more effective than misting, but again, you don’t want the soil to be so wet that it turns to mud.
Hides and decor, like for all other herps, are necessary in some form or another. Ornate pacman frogs come from the Pampas region of Argentina, where vegetation is primarily shrubs and grasses. Some amount of cover is important so that your frog can easily hide from the lights if they choose. Their native grassland habitat means that the vivarium does not need to be especially cluttered, but a bit of cover may help them feel more secure.
Supplemental heating should be provided to achieve a gradient. Never use a heat mat on the bottom of the enclosure, as pacman frogs burrow to cool down. Some use heat mats on the side of the enclosure, but this is hardly effective. Heat mats only produce IR-C, the infrared wavelength that penetrates tissue the least, and they only increase the temperature of what they’re touching, not ambient temps. A halogen bulb is your best bet, putting out a combination of IR-A, IR-B, and IR-C most similar to the sun. Deep heat projectors, radiant heat panels, and ceramic heat emitters can also be used, but a halogen bulb is ideal. Unless the room gets very cold, pacman frogs will be just fine with no supplemental heating at night, room temperature will be okay.
I really recommend providing UV lighting. They are Ferguson Zone 1 animals, meaning they are primarily active at night and will cryptically bask when they need UV. In the wild, they can be found burrowing with their heads poking out during the day. Make sure there is plenty of room to avoid the light, but overall UV lighting is a very good idea.
Never keep a pacman frog with tankmates. They are aggressive and may cannibalize each other if kept together. A pacman frog will eat just about anything that fits in its mouth. This means feeding is very easy. Feeder insects should make up the bulk of the diet, but they’ll happily take small mice, frogs, lizards, or even the occasional feeder fish. Vertebrates should be fed sparingly.
Breeding can be difficult, but not impossible. Many breeders use hormone injections to induce breeding, I recommend against this. Instead, allow your frogs to aestivate and then place them in a rain chamber. Much of the difficulty in breeding frogs results from the natural seasonal cycle not being mimicked. Be warned that pacman frogs are aggressive and an unreceptive female could injure or kill your male. Before attempting to breed, you will definitely want to do further research and speak to people who have bred them before. Breeding is a big responsibility, but it can be very rewarding. Keep in mind that some sections of the pacman frog market are pretty saturated already. Do you have space for the offspring who may not sell right away, or ever?
Tumblr media
My male ornate pacman frog’s vivarium. This is a 36x18x12, with topsoil, eco earth, and leaf litter for substrate. The heat source is a 50 watt halogen bulb and the UV light is an Arcadia PureSun mini, which is a good choice if you have a short enclosure like this. For a standard 18” high 40 breeder, you’ll want a higher output UV light. As you can see, live plants are not a necessity- I’m using silk aquarium plants. The wood piece and the log hide also provide cover. More often than not, my pacman frog simply burrows into the substrate with his head visible, out in the open.
