We've all been there. One of our fannish pet peeves is enjoying a moment and the urge is there like an itch that won't stop until it's scratched: to complain, to lash out, to rain on the parade with monsoon force.

Elleth (@vefanyar) experienced one of those moments. I interviewed her this month about her role in promoting women-centric and femslash fanworks, and she recalls "a promotion week that was hosted on Tumblr for a group of male characters who were and still are fandom favourites and didn't strictly need promoting." But instead of ruining others' fun, Elleth collaborated with Frilly to create Legendarium Ladies' April, an event to promote fanworks about Tolkien's female characters.

Using the philosophy (learned from another SWG member, Independence1776) of "Promote what you love instead of bashing what you hate," Elleth ran many women-centric events and projects over the years. In the past few months on Cultus Dispatches, we've focused on what it is and was like to create fanworks about women in the Tolkien fandom. We've described a fandom that was openly hostile to fanworks about women and where creators feared sharing their women-centric work. But we've also detailed a change, and while the fandom is still far from perfect, creators no longer avoid creating women-centric works (even *gasp* femslash!!) because they dread the reaction. Elleth, her collaborators, and the events they used to encourage and celebrate women-centric and femslash fanworks were part of bringing about that change.

Elleth was kind enough to sit down with me to tell me about her various events, how she became interested in writing about women (spoiler alert: she wasn't always), and how she's seen the fandom change over the years. As we discuss fan history that is discouraging—even sometimes shameful—where women-focused fanworks are concerned, Elleth's work offers a bright point, and a hopeful one. You can read the interview with Elleth here.

Haha so the main pattern I see is that I love to start with a line of dialogue, which is not really a surprise given that dialogue is my favorite thing to write. (Stories about superheroes/villains and opera composers pining over sad priests seem to have a higher likelihood of this, though they also compose a significant chunk of the things on this list).

I love the M9 naming charts, and I'm sorry if you mentioned this somewhere and I managed to miss it, but does this include nicknames like Jessie or Deuces, or just the M9's proper first names?

Yep! It includes things like “Mr. Clay” or “Captain Tusktooth” or “Fiona” etc. Basically, if they were being addressed or referred to by “name” in conversation, it was counted.

29 for Min?

Min + sweat

Since coming to Baldur’s Gate, Min has fallen into something like a routine.

Living in the Lower City gives her ample excuse for skipping the sunrise ceremony most of the time, but she tries to make it to the temple by dawn at least five times a tenday. (Otherwise, the curtains in her room do an excellent job of blocking the sun, and for the first time in years she has the option of sleeping in as late as she likes on a regular basis.)

On the other side of the day, just before dusk descends over the city, she goes down to the courtyard and jogs around the perimeter until her breath comes fast and she starts to feel a prick of sweat despite the autumn air. Then she works through her usual routine of stretches, exercises, and forms — a strange mix of ones she picked up in the army, ones Arizima has shown her, and ones that she figured out on her own.

She enjoys this. The sweat, the ache of exertion, the awareness of the limits and potential of her own body. Not training for war, just to be stronger. Sometimes, she’ll recruit a whelpling or three to perch on her back while she does push-ups, or to cling to her shield while she lifts them up into the air. They seem to have fun with that. She still doesn’t know how children work, but they’re certainly not as fragile as she’d initially feared, and having to stay aware of where several tiny dragonborn are while she moves is probably helpful in honing some sort of protective instinct.

That’s a justification, anyways. The real reason is that it’s fun, and hearing the giggles as she hoists a pair of whelplings above her head makes her laugh, too.

Last song: Life on Land by Dessa

Last show: finally finished s3 of Derry Girls!

Last movie: Juliana got me to see Broker (2022) in theaters with her, which is a Korean movie that I knew basically nothing about going in, except Ju assured me it wouldn't be depressing. i liked it a lot - all the characters have their issues but they're doing their best and they love each other, and the movie treats all of them with a lot of understanding.

Currently watching: rewatching DS9 with Juliana (who is watching it for the first time), which has been super fun - luckily she's enjoying it! it's one of my favorite shows of all time, so i was a little worried she wouldn't be that into it, but we're almost at the end of s4 and things only get more intense from here, so i'm looking forward to it :)

Currently reading: i JUST started rereading Shadow Spinner by Susan Fletcher, which is a book i loved as a child and definitely owned at one point, but my childhood copy went missing ages ago so it's been a very long time since i read it. i'm only about a chapter in but it starts out very strong and i'm surprised by how emotional i am already.

Current obsession: i'm still in pretty deep with Queen's Thief...i keep thinking of new scenes to write, and at this point most of them are about chararcters i made up. having a bunch of OCs (or extremely minor characters that i developed myself to the point that they're practically OCs) is not unusual for me in any fandom, but Queen's Thief has inspired me to write more than i've written in the past five years combined, so it's a little overwhelming! but i'm having fun.
