Blood Bowl Review
Tumblr media
As a long time Blood Bowl Fanatic I cannot believe it has taken me this long to write this review, it has however allowed me to see that this game is coming back in a big way! In today's review I will be covering he contents of this newest edition of Blood bowl, including the pitch, the miniatures, and the rulebook.
My first impression was just how far Games-Workshop, graphics and printing has come since it was first released (Third edition) in 1994.
Tumblr media
My copy of the original game quickly deteriorated, and the box is barely in one piece, the newest release comes across as a high quality product. Which is of course great because if like me, you will be using it to store a majority of the games essentials in there; templates, dice etc. The new artwork is pretty great too
Tumblr media
In this box you get a total of five plastic sprues, two for each of the human, and orc teams, and one with the scatter markers and pass ruler on. In total you get 24 players, two loose footballs, four footballs that fit into the base, two coins, and two trophy/marker things.
First the gaming accessories sprue. WHAT! an Improvement over the old acetate ones. Beautifully themed with footballs and helmets, all incrementally adding to the great blood bowl experience. The ruler is of course practical, able to be broken down for ease of storage. They can of course be left bare or painted, I am looking forward to seeing what people do with them. As basic or as elaborate as you like.
Now the pitch, it is another great improvement over the previous edition, a high quality print that is double sided. On the one side you have the human field covered in lush grass, what you can expect to see from any professional sports team these days. On the other, you have the Orc pitch, or what I refer to as the Sunday League pitch. Whilst this is a great addition to the box, I will be keeping with my custom printed ones. I may however use it occasionally to add some variety to my games, and for my teams to play a few away games. This is something I see Games-Workshop expanding upon, with themed, or limited edition pitches for future team releases. The same can be said about the dugouts
The box contains a selection of stat and event cards; Miscellaneous Mayhem and Random Event, the player cards for each team, and four different Star Players. As well as each team getting one player cards, for each type of player they have. I like the stat cards and hope they are added to starter boxes for each new team release. However I feel it may become a bit awkward with skill development in a league situation. Have to wait and find out.
The Star Player stat cards you get are Griff Oberwald, Mighty Zug, Morg N' Thorg, and Varag Ghoul-Chewer. All of these are returning players from previous versions of the game which is a great hit of nostalgia for the players this game is pulling back in. Though we get the rules for them here, their new models are just starting to become available and be released.
The dice, another bit of incremental branding for the game. The blue are for the Humans and green for the Orcs. Each team gets two D6, a D8 (for scattering), a D16 (for randomizing players), and three special block dice. Most importantly of all, on the D6 the icon is on the 6!
Now the rulebook, I appreciate so much that Games-Workshop have not messed around with it or rebuilt it. The community did such a great job with it over the years, it would have been an insult. What they have done is just tweaked it here and there. While that is greatly appreciated by the veteran player, it also means it continues to be a relatively easy game for new comers to learn, as well as veteran players being there to teach them. The rules are nicely divided up making them very digestible, it is no harder to learn the extra rules right off the bat, and I promise they are well worth the addition. They add a lot to the enjoyment and feeling of the game.
Games-workshop have continued with the lore, no jumping into the world of AoS, and they have continued to throw little nods to the National Football League. I wont spoil any of the Lore but it is a worthwhile and humorous read.
Throughout the rulebook I enjoyed the artwork, I would have loved to have seen more if I am honest. By the end of the rulebook you get the usual hobby related bits for those new to building and painting miniatures.
Onto the bit you really want to read about, the models. They are in one word, FANTASTIC. They are indeed larger than their previous counterparts but a lot more detail and more dynamism is placed on them which more than makes it worth it. In total the Humans get six Lineman, two Throwers, two Catchers, and two Blitzers while the Orcs get six Lineman, two Throwers, two Black Orc Blockers, and two Blitzers. The Catchers are probably my favorite models, enjoying the Odell Beckham esq catch. In fact, overall all the models are really, really nice quality models and sets a high standard for what else is to come.
The Humans are cast in a blue plastic, with the Orcs cast in a green plastic. This way you can start using them straight out of the box without having to paint them if you don't want to. They're all push fit as well and only three pieces each, so you don't even have to glue them if you don't want to. I glued mine of course. The mold lines on them are almost non-existent, which makes it that much easier to assemble them. The bases are super unique too. They're 32mm bases with a slot for the model, like the slotta bases of old. They also have a hole in the front of them where you can attach one of the four footballs that each team comes with. This makes it very easy, and nice looking when you need to designate who has the ball. The plastic seems like it may be a tiny bit softer then the standard stuff used by GW, but not by a bunch.
Overall this is a definite win by Games-Workshop and am loving the fact it has reinvigorated an entire community. The quality of everything is incredibly high, particularly the miniatures, which just have so much movement in them. All of the accessories and the game board itself are a massive improvement and a big addition to the veteran blood bowlers collection. Making the entire box well worth the price. No need to be on the fence with this one, go pick up blood bowl today.
