Linda Flynn-Fletcher

I think Linda Flynn-Fletcher is potentially one of the most misunderstood characters in the show.

It think comes from a natural enough place. Her role in the show is of course, to act as the potential threat to their summers of fun. While they boys never see her as a threat, narratively she's the big bad. If she sees it, its game over.

Here's the thing though. She's a not a bad mom. Her children LOVE her. Similarly to how Phineas and Ferb absolutely adore Candace and would do nearly anything she asked, Phineas, Ferb and Candace all love and respect their mother and don't disobey her. Now a bit of this is clearly Linda being a more permissive parent, but any rules that Linda has Phineas and Ferb never do anything to disobey their mother. While I wouldn't be surprised if there were one or two instances where Candace disobeyed her mother willfully, the closest I can think off off hand is Candace not doing a bunch of chores that she was supposed to do. Really, the fact that all her kids love her, shows how much all her kids feel loved in their household. And I think that's super important. Candace wrote a song about how much she feels loved by her mom, even if her mom is dismissive of Candace. But she still goes with Candace to see what the boys are up to even if she doesn't believe it. She sets boundaries on how often Candace can bust the boys sure. But she hasn't forbidden Candace from doing it altogether. Nor does she punish Candace for presumably lying?

At MOST Linda will say something like: "let's get you out of the sun" after a failed bust. The worst of it I think is probably the time Linda made her promise not to try or suffer the Pharaohs curse. Which, was just some guy in a Pharaoh costume telling Candace curse you. Linda goes out of her way to read books to try and deal with her daughter. She and Candace still clearly hold a lot of affection for each other and do spend a decent amount of mother daughter time together. Linda gives books to her daughter, tries to direct her to other activities, and finds her sleep busting cute, and sometimes goes out of her way to do activities her daughter wants to do with her. All things considered Linda is REALLY patient about Candace's busting. Could she be doing more to get to the bottom of why Candace is presumably acting out? Sure. But Doofensmirtz could also be doing a better job of listening to his daughter and not insulting her (or do we not remember why Vanessa wears earbuds around the house) but we all call him a really good dad.

A LOT of shows have kids hiding a secret from a parent for one reason of another. But while the crux of the show rests on Linda not knowing what her sons are doing, its not because its a secret. The boys aren't hiding it from her. The boys genuinely believe she knows. Lawrence genuinely believes she knows. Candace is the only one in the family who really grasps the situation.

Linda's ignorance, her disbelief of the wild shenanigans that her children get into is easily mistakable for normality. For representing the oppressive day to day. The same thematic antagonist as school. A mom who wants whats best for her kids, and thinks that whats best for them is them being normal, without realizing what's really best for them. After all why else we saw what would happen if she found out in Quantum Boogaloo. But the fact of the matter is aside from that one future (which also featured an effectively evil leader in Doofensmirtz, and therefore implies more factors at play than just Doofensmirtz and Linda's characters), we don't really know how it would play out in the long term. Future Linda even just kinda moves on after discovering the truth.

Linda is exactly like her kids. She just does the same things on a less physics breaking scale. The woman has like 37 different hobbies. She takes a cooking class, donated an art sculpture, is part of a jazz group. She has a background in astrophysics. She was a pop star. She won a meatloaf contest. She takes french lessons. The fact that Linda has several hobbies is part of the reason the formula works at all. Linda is constantly trying new things which gets her out of the house, while her sons are trying their own new things. Her absence is what prompts Candace to have to go looking for her. Also, What Do It Do when the moment Linda gets put in Candace's position she acts the exact same way.

Also it's why she and Lawrence are so compatible. They have a lot of weird hobbies they spend together. She likes Lawrence's history references. They watch car racing together. They went spelunking together. They go bowling regularly enough to have equipment. She has played the bagpipes while Lawrence danced (which sidenote: do you think she taught Candace how to play the bagpipes?).

Not to mention her extended family. Think about it. Her mom was a competitive roller derby skater who once bit a skate and shook it like a dog with a chew toy and pulls elaborate pranks with her identical twin. Really she's a lot like Candace with her aggressive passion. Her dad apparently won a balloon race, but tells the story in the most straightforward way possible, sometimes very oblivious, but is overall a lot like Phineas. Her sister is an adrenaline junky. And back to Quantum Boogaloo for a minute: Her granddaughter is just like Candace, Grown up Candace is a lot like Linda. Do you not see the implications!!?!?!? LIKE???? DO YOU NOT REALIZE THAT LINDA WAS PROBABLY A LOT LIKE CANDACE AND PHINEAS WHEN SHE WAS YOUNGER?!!?! YOU THINK IT SKIPPED A GENERATION OR SOMETHING???

Do you think Linda used to complain about Tiana??? Do you think Linda thought her family was weird and was embarrassed by them??? Do you think Linda ever called herself the only mature/normal member of her family?? LIKE CANDACE DOES????

Anyway, Linda is just like her family. Sure, she is RELATIVELY more normal, but that's relative, and probably simply because the universe bends itself around to keep her from knowing. Linda literally cannot find out about the real nature of her universe. Linda is just a grown up version of her children, seeking to make the most of each day, but within the bounds the universe has set upon her, both as an adult woman and mother, but also in the laws of physics expected of her. But she still makes the most of her life. You don't have to build a roller coaster to make the most of each day and all that.

I think if Linda is representing anything its that even parents can have rich fulfilling lives. Where they make the most out of each day. Having fun with your life doesn't stop with adulthood. Even if you have more responsibilities doesn't mean you can't have fun? Sure childhood is something you can't get back but growing up isn't inherently bad either?

We don't talk enough about how Phineas and Ferb gave us a healthy divorced couple AND a healthy step-family.

Like aside from the exposition in the first episode Candace and Phineas only ever refer to Ferb as brother and Lawrence as Dad. There's no animosity with Linda hyphenating her name or Candace and Phineas keeping their mom's name.

Doof has no hatred for Charlene and doesn't even get mad that she still comes to the Doofensmirtz family outings- even when Vanessa doesn't.

Just good people and good families.

Dr Doofenshmirtz actually has the most depressing backstory, he has terrible parents, and despite everything Doofensmirtz still loves, he has a terrible childhood which he does not try to repeat onto Vanessa’s life, he has a mean professor who he does everything to try to impress, and against all odds he’s still an awesome character. He’s trying to make sure Vanessa is happy and experiencing the best life he can give her, he’s polite to his arch nemesis even though he curses Perry sometimes, he’s super passionate about his job, and he and his ex wife only divorced because they wanted different things. Dr Doofenshmirtz despite his best efforts to be evil, is a great guy !!

And that’s why Dr Doofenshmirtz is my favorite character. *bow* thank you for coming to my ted talk

Mage Au Magic Symbols

These are the symbols that mages use to identify themselves as being a mage of that type. I’m picturing them carving them into stones and trees and buildings and stuff- some simple and messy, some hidden in the tiniest crevices, some huge and elaborate and in a central location of a city- it is always removed by the hunters, and is always redone no matter how much security they station around the area

I also haven’t assigned types to every character, nor is the list of types set in stone. Shifters exist now because I watched the DnD movie, this is very flexible worldbuilding

Post AYA Headcanons

Phineas and Isabella move into the same apartment complex nearby their college campus which ends up with them walking together until reaching their first classes of the day — hand holding of course is involved.

Perry volunteers to supervise the new recruits of OWCA and shape them into good agents after a few years of retirement; finally well rested but bored of the quiet life.

Ferb opens up a library alongside him studying at college for extra money on hand.

Buford and Baljeet predictably share a dormitory after bouncing around apartments and dorms that had roommates apart of the package deal, both mutually agreeing that the only roommate they can stand is each other.

Online calls are the must twice-a-week event with this group being across the world for their studies.

Phineas babysits for Candace every time she needs it to be done, which is pretty often given her job as a lawyer.

Pinky takes over as the top agent of OWCA with both of the other Agent Ps in retirement — which includes a lot more coffee and a lot less sleep than expected. Perry makes sure to give him advice whenever asked.

Vanessa eventually becomes a full time therapist after graduating from college with a degree in hand, which is hung up on one of the walls of her and Ferb’s penthouse.

OWCA becomes much more organized after the leadership was handed over to Carl and has enough funding to pay all of their agents for their good deeds.

Doofensmirtz continues to teach at the highschool even after his daughter moved on to college, enjoying the thrill of teaching children and them actually learning something.

Perry visits the high school sometimes to help with the teaching when it gets too rowdy for the former doctor to handle — even teaching sign language when asked by the school staff.

Daddy Spice (Murray Gets A Cooking Show)-Stranger Things One Shot

Summary: This takes place in between season 2 and 3. I loved Nancy and Murrays dynamic (giving me like Dr. Doofensmirtz and Vanessa vibes) I didn't see a lot of them and I wanted more.

I wrote this before Season 4 Part 2 and I just have a feeling that they're going to kill Murray. I hate it. So this is how I'm coping pls clap.

“Nance, I’m going to need you to hold the camera steady,” Murray advised, tying his quilted apron over his Karate gi. Because good cooking waits for no one. 

“I am holding the camera steady-” Nancy started.

“Hold. It. STEADY!” he snapped.

“Why don’t I hold the camera-” Jonathan got up to take the camera from Nancy, but Murray shoved him back onto the couch.

“You have spaghetti noodles for arms. And my prodigy is the only one who can fully capture all of’a this. ” Murray struck a pose. “Now, CLAP FOR ME!”

Jonathan stared at Nancy, who just shrugged. Jonathan slowly started to clap, and Murray's chest puffed out proudly.

“Yes…” he breathed, rubbing his hands together. 

“So who watches this exactly?” 

“I’ll have you know that the HOA pays top dollar for my American cuisine secrets-” he took a swig of vodka and slid it towards Nancy. “Now, focus on my hands. And keep the camera steady.” 

“Yes sir,” Nancy grumbled. “And we are rolling.”

Murray took a deep breath and flashed the camera a dazzling smile… even though his hands were the only things visible.

“Hey there everyone, my name is Murray Bauman. But you all can call me Daddy Spice .” 

Nancy and Johnathan both made a face at that. 

“Today, we’re going to be making Daddy’s world-famous risotto, I’ve heard that it even makes the Russians want to change sides!” he cackled at his own joke, and Nancy and Jonathan nervously laughed with him. “Now, you’re going to need one pinch of salt in this frying pan because if you put more than one pinch I swear on your god damn mother that it’s going to taste like GARBAGE!”

“...Your apron’s on fire.” Nancy pointed out.

“Thank you for that,” Murray said through gritted teeth, slowly taking off the apron and stomping it out. “You know what, never mind. Never fucking mind. Nobody will EVER get to taste my famous risotto!”

“...So you’ll help us?”

“With what?”

“Our college applications?”

“College is-”

“And PLEASE don’t go on about the government again.” Jonathan pleaded. 

Murray's brow furrowed, and he sighed. “You become a revolutionary investigative journalist, all you wanna do is self produce your own cooking show and now I get stuck advising an idiot-”

“Which one’s the idiot?” Jonathan asked.

“And the one who’s after my job.” 

“...So we’re picking favorites-”

“Yes Jonathan, yes I’m picking favorites. Now, Nance, there’s something you need to know about freelance journalism because I know that you got that internship for those idiots at Hawkins Post, but let's be honest. They won't be able to handle you. And that's a good thing. You still have the guns that I got you, right?"

"Of course I do," Nancy answered, pulling out a revolver from her purse.

"I'm so proud." Murray breathed, tearing up.

For all the revival talk and wanting more Stacy&Perry and Vanessa and Monty and the Hirano and Brown siblings, I also really want the Doofensmirtz siblings.

I want to know more about Roger. I want to know what his deal is. Why is he no longer mayor in MML. What are his feelings on Heinz and his family situation. What does Roger think of his big brother?

The worst thing Roger does is make Doof the fall guy when the city is being attacked. But otherwise he's generally just a bit rude at most. But on the other hand he restored a work of art Heinz made he (well, it really seems doof pushed him so I don't blame him) destroyed. And Vanessa apparently gets along well with him.

Also, PnF isn't a serious show by any means so I don't think this should be taken seriously, but "Golden children" are also abuse victims. So can we maybe talk about how Roger might have been messed up by being on the other end of his parents dichotomis love. And we have very little idea about how his father treated him. If Heinz was in his 40s when he started to finally heal from his trauma I think its fair to grant Roger the same courtesy.

Like at the very least he learned his parents love was conditional. He might be a bit of an asshole. But so is Doof. Doof is definitely an asshole, sorry, even when he's trying to be good. I love him for it of course. But still an asshole. Especially to Roger.

I get Roger mostly exists to facilitate Heinz's tragic backstories and to be a symbolic target to overthrow the tri state area. And is not a particularly fleshed out character. But I do wonder.

*Kicks down metaphorical door* We need more characters that sincerely believe they're irredeemable/evil but the narrative makes them redeemable/not evil!!!

For example, Dr. Doofensmirtz! He was only evil because he thought he was! In the final episode, he realizes that he was only being evil because he had such a tragic past, and that he thought he needed to be evil because of it. That wasn't getting him anywhere, so he decided to be good, and ultimately did his best to save the day. He went on to invent time travel(?) and help out Milo and Co. in "Milo Murphy's Law", as well as trying to be an OWCA agent for a while.

In any case, it just feels like this trope isn't used as often as it could/should be! It creates really interesting character dynamics, between just the character on their own, or how they interact with loved ones and family. Back on the Doofensmirtz thing, this is shown with his relationship with his daughter, and his nemesis. Perry and Dr. Doof help each other out a lot. I think throughout the course of the show, they have more tangible relationship than most other characters. Even in the final episode Perry seems depressed when Doofensmirtz basically fires him as his nemesis. And with Vanessa, they both love each other a lot, but Doofensmirtz's whole EVIL BAD GUY thing makes him seem distant to Vanessa, because she knows that isn't who he really is.

In other cases, it can create inner conflict, where the character is so deep into doing this thing that they feel compelled to continue, even when realistically they should've stopped before they even started. They may have made one mistake and are being too harsh on themself or made one mistake and everyone else was too hard on them. An example of the latter is that one guy for Sophia the First, who wants the magical amulet or whatever so he can become king and prove to everyone that the one mistake he made doesn't mean he's worthless, only flawed. He feels he has to be a villain because he was treated like one: No one trusts him, everyone constantly blaming him for one mistake, everyone blaming any future mistakes on him, so on so forth. However, through the show, he learns that being evil is a choice. It doesn't matter if you're seen as a bad guy, as long as you try your hardest to be good. (I think that's how it ended at least, my Sophia the First lore is a bit fuzzy at best)
