Finally visited the Van Cortlandt House Museum @vchmnyc in the Bronx today. The Georgian style house was built in 1748 for Frederick Van Cortlandt and his family and was later used by Lafayette and George Washington during the Revolutionary War. Now that things are open again, I’m checking places I’ve wanted to visit off my list. Can’t wait to figure out where to go next. #fbf #imisstrailrunning From my IG post (July 29, 2020): "10 days late (the race was on July 18), but better than not running. This was a tough first 50K for me. I learned a lot about what I need to do to run ultras. I took the Metro North to Croton Harmon and started my run there, making my way to Croton Gorge Park and the New Croton Dam and then taking the Old Croton Aqueduct (OCA) Trail all the way back into Van Cortlandt. In the morning it felt nice and cool on the OCA Trail since it is mostly shaded. I used a 10->10->10 pacing strategy (1st 10 miles, 2nd 10 miles and last 10 or so miles) similar to Marathon pacing (the last 10 is the last 10K). 1st 10 miles were the smoothest. I hiked the steep hills that I encountered and kept a conservative pace to attempt saving fuel for later. 2nd 10 miles the fatigue started rolling in. The more south I went the more sun I had to deal with in spots, and I started walking more. I brought my 3 new 22oz bottles full with cold water in the hope that this would help with hydration. I ran out of water by Tarrytown so I had to reup and grab a gatorade at the CVS by the Tappan Zee. 3rd 10 miles was the toughest. At mile 1̶8̶.̶3̶ 22.3 I tripped on a tree root and wrecked on the trail. Luckily, it was just dirt so no blood. Just lots of dirt all over my right side. I hiked most of this to the end. It was the early afternoon, the sun was high and it was baking me in Yonkers. What I learned: - I need real food (trail mix, rice balls or something else savory, salty and with a good mix of fat carb and protein). I took 4 gels and had enough of those. - I need to figure out a better hydration strategy for summer ultras. 3 bottles is not enough and I need to find something that works better if that is possible. - I tapered too hard for this. Taking 3-4 days off of running during the past few weeks. When I do that for Marathons, I bonk. Where were the Original 9 Holes at Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course?

It’s well-known that Van Cortlandt Park Golf Course in the Bronx is the Country’s oldest public course. Apart from this general fact, though, I really had no idea whether Van Cortlandt circa 2021 is at all similar to Van Cortlandt circa 1895. In particular, I always found myself wondering if the course we play today includes any of the original holes built on the property. Fortunately, there are a few contemporaneous historical records that provide good reference points to compare today’s course with the original layout. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that we are playing any of Van Cortlandt’s original holes today.

I reviewed two records that proved to be especially helpful in this assessment. First, The Sun published an article in November 1896 describing interest in an amateur tournament scheduled to be played at Van Cortlandt. The article included a diagram of the course layout and a description of each hole.

The second record was the May 1899 issue of “Golf,” which is the USGA’s official bulletin. The publication included a nine-page article, titled “Golf at Van Cortlandt,” which described the history of golf in the park and plans to change the original 9-hole routing into 18 holes. Of particular interest, the author sketched a map of the property and provided descriptions of how each of the original 9 holes would be changed during the expansion process.

The drawings published by The Sun and the USGA were helpful because they provided the boundary lines that defined the original routing, including Mosholu and Grand Avenues to the East, the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad: New York & Putnam Division train tracks to the West, and Van Cortlandt Lake to the South. With these landmarks to work with, it’s possible to locate the original land area the course occupied using historical maps of Van Cortlandt Park (see above for a helpful portion of a 1903 map from the New York Public Library’s collection).

Based on all these sources, I created the above-referenced, to-scale map showing where the original 9 holes at Van Cortlandt were located.
