Rewatching one of my favorite childhood movies, Tremors, a b horror movie starring Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward about underground monsters that hunt by sound, and I want to talk about a specific character.

Specifically the main female lead and love interest to Kevin Bacon’s Valentine- Rhonda Lebeck.  For a movie made in 1990, Rhonda is a surprisingly feminist portrayal of a female lead (like Laura Dern’s Ellie in Jurassic Park).

Rhonda is a student studying seismic activity in the isolated town of Perfection, Nevada and is constantly acknowledged, by every character int he movie including (and especially) the men, as the smartest person in town.  They constantly ask her opinion and respect her intelligence and never question the fact that a woman is smarter than they are.  Any time she has an idea it is never question because she is a woman and she never has to do that not-really-feminist-a-woman-must-prove-herself thing movies to this day still do.

There is one scene about halfway through the movie where Rhonda gets tangled up in barbed wire and must take off her pants in order to escape the monster dragging her into it’s mouth using said barbed wire.  The scene is in no way played as sexual, or a gratification scene for the men watching the movie.  any close up of Rhonda is shot from the waist up and we only see her bare legs in wider shots meant to showcase the monster, not her half-nakedness.  the only time we see a closeup of her bare legs is when her wounds are being tended to, it only lasts a few moments, and you can see that she has hair on her legs.  Which took me a few re-watches to notice but I feel added to the non-sexual take on her bare legs, as even to this day women in movies and tv are always shaved as smooth as dolphins.

She also dresses appropriately for the situation she’s in- hiking boots, cargo pants, long sleeved shirt.  Earlier in the movie she wears shorts that aren’t halfway up her ass.  She dresses for doing fieldwork in the middle of the desert and the filmmakers didn’t take it as an opportunity to have her parading around in short shorts and a bikini top like some movies have done to female characters in horror movies.

I just like how Rhonda is treated like a character, not just a two dimensional love interest.  The relationship between her and Valentine is also really sweet and it’s revealed in later movies, that neither character appear in, that they get married and have a daughter together (although it is implied in later movies the two have gotten divorced).

Just a solid character and one of my favorite female characters in a movie.

Graduation hits differently when one of your favorite actors passes away 2 days before the big day. I designed my cap 4 weeks ago to follow my highschool grad cap that featured Burt Gummer. My heart broke when I heard the news of Fred Ward's passing. I couldn't believe the timing of it all. He and the Tremors franchise were one of the many reasons I decided to pursue acting. Rest in peace Fred Ward and thank you. 💗

A/N: Day 1 of @yeehawgust​ , here’s some more simple little @thetremorssaga​ goodness. Totally G rated. 

Burt will never explain why he and Heather took in the two boys who helped out the first time the graboids came around. Nancy and Mindie had moved into their shared home soon after the first incident, the concrete boundaries newly laid helped a lot and even as Mindie slept Nancy settled with Heather and Burt, learning how to protect herself better. Val of course had been the first to come back, buying up an empty home and asking Burt’s help to settle the house and make it Graboid proof. He’d smiled when Burt walked him through the new finds, nodding and setting to work. Rhonda had settled in easily, working as both the local science tutor and a travelling scientist. Earl had returned later, Kate tucked quietly into his side, steady but clearly a little wary of meeting so many of his friends at once. Burt had smirked slightly at her, moving to wrap an arm around her shoulder when Earl and Val broke off to talk, steering her towards first Heather, who had come home only when she heard Nancy was homeless now, and Nancy, then Rhonda. Rhonda had smiled as she greeted Kate, discussing science easily with Kate, smiling when Kate relaxed a little, her laugh warm when Kate muttered about getting way too used to smelling like graboid guts. “That happens… just let it. You can always come shower when the day’s done.” “You guys have showers… that work?” “Yeah, Burt’s kinda smart like that.” Rhonda shrugs and Kate laughs. “Sounds good to me…” “You guys got a house yet?” “No…” “Get the feeling the reason Val got us such a big one is so you guys can move in…” “Is that okay with you?” “Sure, why not… at least I wouldn’t be just listening to Val pine for his best friend.” Kate had laughed again then shrugged. “At least now we can work together too, right?” “I’d love that.” Rhonda agrees with a smile. It's a fresh start, and one she sorely needs, thinks Kate. The ‘posse’ of friends Burt had mentioned turned out just right. Although she wonders if this is all she had to meet or if more might show up.

“I See the Light” is a romantic duet in Tangled between Rapunzel and Eugene. It is sung when Rapunzel is finally achieving her lifelong dream to see the floating lanterns. The song was nominated for best song at the 83rd academy awards but lost to “We Belong Together” from Toy Story 3. “I See The Light” was originally called “You Are My Forever,” and was a reprise of a song Mother Gothel sung to Rapunzel, before being removed. After “You Are My Forever” was removed, the song was still different from what it was in the finished film. It was an anthem-like song at first but Alan Menken decided it should be more gentle.

Premise: Chief Ramsey receives a surprise delivery from a secret admirer.

A/N: This is for @peonierose and her lovely visual prompt ‘you’re always beautiful’. Submission for @choicesmonthlychallengejune2022 Day 24 prompt “Someone left a gift for you.” 

Ethan Ramsey knew it would take him time to adjust to being Chief of Medicine and patience was required. At least that’s what he reminded himself whenever he started to get frustrated by the demands of his new role.

It had only been a month since he had officially become chief even though the transition had started in the summer. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither would the new Edenbrook.

He had never seen himself in administration and wouldn’t be here now if it hadn’t been for Naveen’s faith in him. And Cassie’s. 

Despite his misgivings, he had trusted two of the three most important people in his life, both of whom seemed to know him better than he knew himself, to guide his decision.

As he walked back to his office, he recalled the words Cassie had said to him when Naveen first approached him about the position.

“Someone who puts the patients first, who focuses on how medicine can help people,” she had said pausing until he met her sincere gaze before continuing, “…that’s the kind of leader this hospital needs. The experience, the skillset…it’s all window dressing to your core values. And I know you’ve got the right ones for the job.”

He hadn’t been fully convinced, but she had certainly given him something to think about as he went home that night.

He had faced off against one too many administrators during his tenure as a physician because they saw patients as case files to be billed. And residents as low-cost, replaceable labor that kept the hospital running while they lined their pockets with perks from Big Pharma and insurance companies.

The entire system was designed to favor those at the top while the bottom toiled away. It wasn’t right and he knew he was being given a chance to change the status quo.

He wasn’t naïve enough to think he could solve the problem of healthcare in America. But he could make a difference in this one hospital system. And maybe, just maybe, show others what could be if Administration fought for patients and their doctors instead of against them.

He neared his office, passing workstations and cubicles that were a hive of activity, and his executive assistant Lorraine McKee glanced up from her computer screen. Her severe expression reminded him of his third-grade English teacher, but he had soon learned that it hid a kind heart and an even more organized soul. 

She had been Naveen’s assistant previously and told him she preferred to remain in the role, ‘if he was so inclined’. Ethan had been more than happy with her decision; her knowledge of the hospital’s administration would be invaluable as he navigated this new phase of his career.

“Someone sent a gift for you, Dr. Ramsey,” she said, handing him a stack of messages at the same time. 

When he looked around puzzled, she gestured towards the closed door. 

“I put it inside your office as I didn’t think you would want everyone out here gossiping about it. Not that they won’t anyway,” she said with a sniff of disdain.

Ethan smiled on the inside at the words and her manner. Naveen had been a notorious gossip hound and he knew that Lorraine had fed him tidbits more often than not. But she liked to pretend she was above that, and he let her.

Wondering what he could have received to cause such a reaction, Ethan nodded and walked past her to enter his office.

The strong scent of roses hit his senses before his eyes fell on the large bouquet left on the glass coffee table. There must have been a dozen roses in full bloom wrapped in black and gray paper with a red and gold ribbon holding them together.

Confused, he approached the roses and plucked the small envelope attached to the front of the bouquet. He didn’t know anyone that could have sent him such an extravagant display, and he wondered briefly if the florist had made an error.

Then he saw his full name written across the white envelope and knew it wasn’t a mistake. The card was unsigned except for the drawing of a heart with an arrow running through it and the words ‘You’re always beautiful’.

Remembering Cassie’s reaction to the cupcakes a secret admirer had sent him a couple of years ago, he stared at the roses in trepidation and pondered how he would explain this to his girlfriend.

Even though Lorraine had likely placed the bouquet inside and out of sight immediately, everyone on the floor would have witnessed its arrival—the roses were too lavish to have gone unnoticed—and his assistant signing for them as she took delivery.

Rumors of Chief Ramsey receiving a dozen red roses was probably spreading through the hospital like wildfire, he thought with a loud groan.

He reached for his phone with the aim of getting to Cassie before the gossip mill.

Still bemused, Ethan stared at Cassie’s texts and realized he had a huge grin on his face. He couldn’t recall a single woman of his acquaintance that would have sent him flowers let alone a beautiful bouquet of red roses.

He had sent his fair share of flowers over the years, but this was the first time he’d been on the receiving end of what pundits called the ultimate romantic gesture.

Was it any wonder he had fallen in love with her?
