1 dead in Tamil Nadu after heavy rains, coastal districts on alert - india news

Rains lashed many parts of Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Puducherry with the North-East monsoon triggering a heavy spell in the last 24 hours claiming one life in the state capital, even as the Met office predicted more showers in the next two days. Various parts of the state have been receiving good rainfall since the onset of the monsoon on October 16, killing a person in Thanjavur on Saturday. Director of area cyclone-warning Centre, Regional Meteorological Centre, N Puviarasan told reporters here that the presence of an upper air circulation caused heavy to very heavy rains. “In the last 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Sunday, Sathankulam in Tuticorin district recorded maximum of 19 cm of rainfall followed by Cuddalore 17 cm, Tirunelveli 15 cm, Kancheepuram 13 cm, “ he told reporters here on Sunday. He said light to heavy rainfall may occur over the next 24-48 hours. “Places like Ramanathapuram, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Vellore, Tiruvallur, Thiruvannamalai districts may receive very heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours,” he said. To a query, he said the rainfall recorded since October 1 was 39 per cent which was three per cent higher than the rain received during the setting of the monsoon. For Chennai and its neighbourhood areas, he said light to moderate rainfall may occur over the next two days. “The city received 51 cm this season which is 9 per cent less compared to the normal 60 cm received during monsoon season,” he said. He advised fishermen not to venture into sea at Cape Comorin, Lakshadweep area as gusty winds were likely to occur due to the presence of depression in the Arabian Sea. To another query, he said Nagapattinam district received the maximum rainfall registering 81 cm as against 67 cm normally during the monsoon season. Meanwhile, city Police Commissioner A K Viswanathan took stock of situation in the state capital and reviewed the measures taken following the heavy rainfall. Talking to reporters, Viswanathan said all the departments have been alerted to take stock of situation in a coordinated manner. He said a whatsapp group of officers has been formed to ensure that immediate steps would be taken. “Five teams from the State Disaster Relief Force have been kept on standby and teams from the National Disaster Relief Force, if required, may also join in,” he said. Several low-lying areas in the city were inundated. A 49-year-old man died at Ambattur on Saturday night after he accidentally fell into a stormwater drain. An offical from the Fire and Rescue Services Muthu Krishnan said they received information about the man falling into the 6-7 foot deep stormwater drain. Firemen rushed to the scene, and pulled the body out, he said. DMK chief M K Stalin took to social media saying district administration should take measures on warfooting following the rains. “Several low-lying areas were inundated, and power supply was cut. The district administration should take immediate steps,” he said in a Facebook post. In neighbouring Puducherry, incessant rains hit normal life from this morning. Territorial Chief Minister V Narayanasamy told newsmen at his residence the union territory saw nearly 12 cm of rainfall in the last 24 hours and the directorate of school education declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Monday. The Chief Minister said he was recuperating after a knee replacement surgery, so he could not visit the rain-ravaged areas, but his ministerial colleagues had fanned out to different pockets for relief and rehabilitation works. Most of the thoroughfares were water-logged disrupting vehicular traffic. Daily wage earners were hard-hit because of the inclement weather. It also wasn’t you taking up residence on my fire escape after a night out drinking.” She paused, head leaning back as if the answer was written on the ceiling. “It probably started right after the flerken, though, in a slow, meandering kind of way.” 

“I might have even started to figure out what it was when you gave me that Heart record as a birthday gift.” It was the first LP she saw anytime she wanted to play something on their turntable. “It took a little bit of growth on both our parts before I was willing to call it that, though. But I saw that you were willing to try, and that might’ve been the thing that did me in.”

They both knew she’d been...hesitant. Darcy had a terrible habit of jumping in with both feet without looking up until Genis, so perhaps the flerken had opened the door to that area of growth for her. 

“But if you mean the first time I knew for sure? Would you believe me if I said it was when I was having a really crummy day at the firm I worked at after I left SI, and you offered to take me anywhere in the Universe I wanted to go? And instead of taking me to Titan to see the gardens, or something else astronomically impressive, you agreed to just take a walk with me for a few blocks in Manhattan.”

She’s learned not to beat around the bush when it comes to talking to anyone, lest its meaning get twisted. Given that she’s not being interviewed for CSPAN or CNN, one would think that would be less of a concern. But for better or worse, Sterling is an agent of SHIELD and who knows what sort of quasi-assignment his higher ups would give him. And really, she’s on an oversight committee that could (and probably should) affect certain members of the alphabet soup. 

Darcy’s got her fingers in multiple pies. And while experience has made her cautious, she’d like to give Sterling the benefit of the doubt. So long as her near daily jaunt around the Mall continued, anyway. “So what exactly are you here for? Coulson have you lobbying for him or what?”

The introduction is a slow, rhythmic tapping of her fingers. It used to be that such an action would come with the flash of garish nail polish on stainless steel lab tables or laminated MDF. It’s borne from the initial quicksand feeling of boredom, a slow envelopment of the self. When the quicksand hits shoulder height then comes the gnawing of her inner cheek (typically the right) accompanied by extended staring into the middle distance. 

The first crescendo of frustration is accompanied by a ticking of the jaw, mandible jutting forward as if preparing for a growl that never comes. It repeats as necessary, gaining momentum as its spurred on by the object of ire, before her diaphram contracts downwards, like the dome of an inverted cathedral drawing in worshippers in the form of air moving past the opening gates of her ribs pulled up by the fibrous chains of her external intercostals. 

A pre-chorus of raised voices follows such an interlude before screaming into the chorus proper. A fugue of ulterior motives masked by misunderstandings and miscommunication overlapping one another. A staccato mirrored by a stabbing index finger, the straight thrust of lacquered keratin into stained wood or a clothed chest. It’s a chorus performed often in her duties in the Senate, either in the Chamber or in her offices. It’s often performed in interviews as well with particularly shoddy divas parading as respectable journalists. 

Fortunately for all involved but especially Darcy, the bridge breaks up such repetition. Another opportunity for the upside down cathedral to expand and cool the fire in her blood. 

Frustration, very pointedly, is the number one thing to kickstart this riot. The kind that accompanies demeaning comments and dismissive behavior. The failure to meet her eye or speak with her as an equal. It’s part of the reason why she decided to become a lawyer and, eventually, become a senator. 

Holier-than-thou behavior, especially the sort she had become intimately aware of via Dr. Foster, sets her off like nothing else. It did, however, give her the fiery motivation to gain a title that even doctorates would have to respect. 

Presently, her biggest frustrations stem from the same sort of holier-than-thou behavior coming from other politicians slinging muck or being purposely obtuse. Those who align themselves with Thaddeus Ross are among the worst, for obvious reasons given her noteable work in metahuman rights legislation. However, following a fast-paced walk (or run depending on her ire) around the Mall instead of pitching a fit and repeating her keratin staccato, Darcy buckles down and does her work with war drums beating in her veins.

‘carol susan jane danvers.’ it’s not quite a croak, but that weighted and put-upon tone that carries the underlying message of now is not the time. typically, darcy is perfectly content to let carol take lead on hurdling certain obstacles, the blonde’s inherent super skillset usually being more qualified to handle it. even things that didn’t require a sparkly punch to the face were handled with confidence and military experience. barring that, her delightfully snarky mind could run circles around whomever it was stirring up trouble. 

and then there was this. ‘please do not antagonize ross’s congress cronies. you know as well as i do that one of them would find some legal loophole that would ground you from avengers shit, and as your lawyer, i don’t want to have to chuck my potential presidential nomination out the window because you can’t play nice for ten minutes.’

Does your muse know multiple languages? What is their mother tongue? What drove them to learn more than one? How fluent are they? Can they read and write in all of the languages they know? Or can they only speak and understand these other languages?

Darcy does, in fact, know multiple languages, though, there is some debate as to what constitutes her mother tongue. Her biological mother will claim it’s Italian because of the brief period of time she lived with her and Darcy’s half-brother in the Lower East Side. Her biological father, on the other hand, as well as Darcy’s stepmother will claim that it’s primarily English, though not with without a fair amount of Scottish Gaelic courtesy of her father.

Regardless, Darcy is most fluent in English and fairly fluent in Italian. In high school and for her bachelor’s, Darcy took French classes and built up a moderate vocabulary because of that, which was then supplemented when she traveled for work.

V; Warfoot: In this verse, specifically, Darcy dedicated herself to learning some basic Russian in order to supplement her understanding of the country and its government. She’s somewhat comfortable with Cyrillic, although she’s much better at recognizing the letters than writing them out herself.

The next language on her list to start learning is Mandarin, but her grasp of the language so far is tenuous at best and entirely non-existent at worst. The writing system is very difficult for her to try to get a handle on because of the wide variety of symbols and internal structures to those symbols, as well as the tonal differences that can change not only the pronunciation of a word but the meaning.

She has a certain fondness for the xiaomanyc videos on youtube, where the guy surprises people with his fluency, and secretly hopes to attain even a fraction of the same level of fluency. She thinks it’ll help prevent misunderstandings or purposeful misdirections.

V; Hercules: Darcy’s French, in this verse, is distinctly more fluent than in other verses. Her pronunciation and grammar are also more Parisian because of the level of immersion she’s attained in it.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles...

Darcy is very much used to having some sort of beater car or hand-me-down, especially when she had gotten her license--not at 16, but at 17, actually. What she currently depends on her general location and income...

1️⃣ v; Warfoot:

Darcy is entirely economical in this verse, so when she’s not utilizing the subway or other forms of public transportation, she actually has a Honda Civic in “cosmic blue.” There are a few bumps and scrapes on the fenders from what she’ll call “Standard Wear and Tear” over the years, including one memorable incident with a sorority girl having a bad night who keyed the back right fender thinking the car belonged to one of her sisters. 

The interior, however, is reflective of her and her busy schedule. The seats are black leather, but she’s put seat covers over them because she learned from her father--who restores vintage cars--the faults of leaving them exposed to her particular lifestyle which is a story for another day. There’s almost always a coat haphazardly tossed across the backseat, along with a spare set of clothes in what’s effectively a go-bag, she keeps just in case. When she’s working there’s usually several bags filling the backseat and several water bottles lying around, and she swears up and down that the center console is veneered with spilt coffee. 

2️⃣ v; Copper Osprey: 

Because of the remote nature of the Osprey, Darcy has to utilize a vehicle with 4WD, while simultaneously maintaining a low-key presence in town. She was adamant that a brand new Jeep would stand out in Puente Antiguo, and insisted for something that didn’t scream Secret Government Hideout. Between that and some help from her father, Darcy drives a rebuilt 1994 Ford Bronco XLT. It’s almost always covered in either dust or mud from the dirt road to the safehouse--inside and out--but it’s reliable like nothing else, even if she does have to get out to switch it over to 4WD. 

3️⃣ v; Hercules: 

This verse is very much the odd one out, as Darcy doesn’t have a vehicle of her own since moving to Paris. She typically relies on either le métro or whatever vehicle SHIELD arranges for her. She is, however, a surprising fan of the European train system, and she’s putting money away for an Orient Express trip for a brief vacation.

What is their social media life like? Do they have one? Is status connected to likes or could they care less?

It’s no secret that Darcy is well-versed with a variety of social media. She has accounts on several different platforms, and unless she’s tasked with helping someone up their public image—which is no longer her department, thank you very much—she can primarily be found on platforms such as Instagram and Twitter, and it’s mostly for her own amusement and interest. Anymore, she’s often too busy for anything else that requires more fiddling than that. It is useful, however, when she’s keeping an eye on certain things for work, particularly tags for Avengers and various other allies, as well as the sort of dissent that can often been seen following incidents and operations.

It’s also useful to keep in touch with her family. Her father shares before and after photos of whatever project car he’s working on—though he’s typically relegated to Facebook. Her stepmother, on the other hand, opts for Instagram more, sharing clips from lumber trips and WIPs of whatever sculpture she’s carving. Darcy finds it hilarious that they seem to be competitive about who has more likes. Her biological mother, on the other hand, is the Luddite of her trio of parental units, which is helpful in that it keeps Darcy on a routine. Darcy will call every couple of days to check in with Anna Vittoria.

That said, she knows that she’s still fighting the College Co-ed Stereotype, even years after graduating multiple times in multiple disciplines. But she occupies the fun generational scapegoat that is the Millennial demographic, so she juggles her own personal amusement with the weight of public perception. The bottom line is that Darcy utilizes social media regularly, but not obsessively, and she doesn’t care about likes or reposts beyond her father and stepmothers’ personal competition, prioritizing personal entertainment and functional uses over self-promotion.

The only exception to this, is v; Warfoot wherein she utilizes social media as a way to check the pulse of public opinion, and particularly her constituents. That’s when she pays the most attention to statistics and has specific meetings regarding what she should and shouldn’t include with her staff.
