“Hi, kid.”
I grinned at the familiar voice as I closed the door behind me.
“Hey, Becky.”
The woman smiled at me as I threw my bag onto the open bed. I hadn’t exactly expected Jill to room me with Becky again, but it was nice. Becky had helped to make sure that I actually got to bed at a responsible time and that I wasn’t late to any meetings or practices. After all, it had been quite easy for me to get distracted by everything else.
“Did you get to go to the lake?”
“Yeah, we went for a couple of days,” I admitted.
Becky nodded at that before she turned back to the book that she was reading. I tilted my head as I read the title.
“ The Portrait of Dorian Gray ,” I read off the spin. Becky looked up at me with a raised eyebrow. “I’ve never read it.”
“I could read it out loud, if you’d like.”
I smiled at Becky as I nodded. Becky looked back down at the book as I kicked my shoes off.
“‘I have always been my own master; had at least always been so, till I met Dorian Gray. Then--but I don't know how to explain it to you. Something seemed to tell me that I was on the verge of a terrible crisis in my life. I had a strange feeling that Fate had in store for me exquisite joys and exquisite sorrows. I grew afraid, and turned to quit the room. It was not conscience that made me do so: it was a sort of cowardice. I take no credit to myself for trying to escape.’”
I grinned as Becky read the words on the pages. I knew that we had at least an hour, if not two, until our meeting started since they were still waiting on quite a few players to get into the hotel. I didn’t give Becky time to start the next paragraph as I crawled into her bed before ducking my head under her left arm so I could look at the pages. Becky stayed silent for a moment as I got comfortable.
It wasn’t until I had settled down and stopped moving that Becky continued.
“‘Conscience and cowardice are really the same things, Basil. Conscience is the trade name of the firm. That is all.’
‘I don't believe that, Harry, and I don't believe you do either. However, whatever was my motive--and it may have been pride, for I used to be very proud--I certainly struggled to the door. There, of course, I stumbled against Lady Brandon. 'You are not going to run away so soon, Mr. Hallward?' she screamed out. You know her curiously shrill voice?’”
Becky’s voice was definitely one of the most soothing voices I had ever heard. Maybe she could become a professional audiobook reader or something like that once she retired from playing. Or even just take it up during the off-season. I wouldn’t mind listening to Becky read me more books if her voice was always this soothing.
“‘Yes; she is a peacock in everything but beauty,’ said Lord Henry, pulling the daisy to bits with his long, nervous fingers.
‘I could not get rid of her. She brought me up to Royalties, and people with Stars and Garters, and elderly ladies with gigantic tiaras and parrot noses. She spoke of me as her dearest friend. I had only met her once before, but she took it into her head to lionize me. I believe some picture of mine had made a great success at the time, at least had been chattered about in the penny newspapers, which is the nineteenth-century standard of immortality. Suddenly I found myself face to face with the young man whose personality had so strangely stirred me. We were quite close, almost touching. Our eyes met again. It was reckless of me, but I asked Lady Brandon to introduce me to him. Perhaps it was not so reckless, after all. It was simply inevitable. We would have spoken to each other without any introduction. I am sure of that. Dorian told me so afterwards. He, too, felt that we were destined to know each other.’”
I couldn’t find it in myself to fight off the sleep as Becky’s voice lulled me into darkness.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Hey, pipsqueak.”
I looked at Hope who had sat down across from me. I titled my head at her sudden presence. I knew that she often sat at the table with Carli and Christie during our meals. But they were both seated at a table that was behind Hope.
“Hi, Hope.”
I looked over my shoulder where most of the team was still getting their food. Being small did come with advantages, such as being small enough to get around everyone so I could be one of the first to get my food. I spotted Becky and Alyssa who were just now grabbing their own plates to fill them up. I turned back to look at Hope.
“Look, I just came to say that maybe you aren’t that bad.”
I raised my eyebrows at that. Hope complimenting me had been the last thing I was expecting. After all, we still weren’t getting along that well. It seemed like we both tolerated each other just enough for a fight not to break out during practice, but that didn’t stop the two of us from exchanging words during practice.
“I mean, don’t get me wrong,” Hope said as she kept her eyes trained on her plate as she stabbed some of the food with her fork. “You still aren’t better than I am. But that doesn’t mean you aren’t helping us out.”
I stayed silent, causing Hope to look up at me. She just stared back at me. I was trying to figure out if this was some kind of joke or something.
“Who are you and what have you done with Hope Solo?”
Hope chuckled at that as she nodded.
“That’s cute, pipsqueak.”
“No seriously. Hope Solo would never compliment me. We go at each other’s throats,” I said as I shook my head. I turned my attention back to my plate. Hope had to be seriously sick if she was being nice to me all of a sudden. “Mine and Hope’s relationship does not consist of us being nice to each other. We’re like sweet potatoes and mustard. They don’t go together. I don’t give a shit what Mick says either. He’s a weirdo for eating sweet potatoes and mustard.”
“No, I’m serious, Jo,” Hope said. I paused at that before I looked up at Hope. “Can you just take the compliment?”
I shook my head. I really couldn’t.
At least not from Hope.
This was too weird. Hope wasn’t supposed to be nice to me. She wasn’t supposed to compliment me.
“Is everything okay over here?”
Hope and I both looked at Becky who took a seat next to me. I sent Becky a small smile before I turned back to Hope. I slowly nodded my head as I realized just what this was about.
“You’re being nice 'cause I saved your ass in the goal.”
“Jo! Language!”
I rolled my eyes at that. I already had a mom at home, I didn’t need Becky deciding to mother me while I was at camp too.
“No.”
“You said that way too fast for it to be true! This is about me saving you in the goal.” I grinned as I glanced at Alyssa who sat next to Becky. So it wasn’t because Hope actually wanted to get to know me. “You just feel bad that you tried acting all tough and like you could stop me and then you couldn’t back it up and I had to save the game against France so we didn’t draw again.”
“I don’t need help in the goal, pipsqueak .”
“Sure you don’t.”
It felt good knowing that Hope had felt bad after I saved her skin.
“You could have just said thank you.”
“Jo,” Becky said. I looked over at her as I raised my eyebrows. I wasn’t too sure why she really cared what happened between Hope and me. “Just take the compliment.”
“But she’s only saying it because I made the stop on the goal line.”
“Jo. Take the compliment.”
My jaw slacked a bit at that. I couldn’t believe that Becky was actually taking Hope’s side.
“Thank you for the compliment,” I said once I eventually turned back to Hope. The goalie smirked at me as she stood up. I rolled my eyes as I lowered my voice. “Good thing you’re good at soccer. Cause the porch light’s on, but there ain’t no one home.”
It wasn’t until Hope was well out of earshot that I felt the hand connect with the back of my head.
“Ow!”
“You’re lucky she didn’t hear that comment,” Becky hissed quietly. I slumped back against my chair at that. I really wasn’t in the mood for another lecture. “I get it. You don’t get along with Hope and you might never get along with Hope, but she’s our goalie. You are going to have to stop trying to provoke her.”
“She doesn’t treat me fairly. Why should I be the one to have to extend the olive branch?” I asked as I leaned forward to get closer to Becky. “She’s the adult. I’m only fifteen.”
“Jo-”
“No, it’s bullshit.”
“Langauge.”
“And I don’t need another mom. I already have one.”
Becky sighed as she leaned back in her own chair. I looked away from her.
“What if I talk to Hope?”
Becky and I both looked over at Alyssa. I had honestly forgotten that she was sitting at the table with us because of how quiet she had been. It was something that Becky told me I would have to get used to though.
“As if that would make it any better.”
“That would be great. Thank you, Alyssa.”
I huffed as I pushed myself away from the table. I had already finished my plate and if it gave me an excuse to be away from Alyssa and Becky right now, I would take it. I didn’t need everyone else fighting my battles for me. It was part of the problem. If everyone else fought my battles for me then no one would ever take me seriously.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“So, I heard that you and Hope got into it,” Jill said as I was wrapping my hand. I sighed as I looked up at her. “Is there a problem that I, as the coach, need to address between you two?”
“No.”
Jill nodded her head slowly as she still looked down at me as I finished wrapping my hand. I rubbed the bridge of my nose before looking back up at her.
“Is there anything else?”
“I really hoped that you and Hope would have gotten over this by now,” Jill said. I softly groaned as my shoulders slumped forward. “I’ll be honest with you, kid. I want to call you up for the August game and September-”
“I get it,” I assured her. I glanced at where the rest of the team was getting ready. Even though I had been friendly enough with Alyssa and Becky, the rest still seemed hesitant to get close to me. “Who wants a kid on their team when they’re the best in the world?”
“Jolene, that isn’t it.”
“Isn’t it?”
I looked away from Jill and down at my shoes. I knew that it was. It wasn’t the first time I had been left behind because I was the youngest one, and I doubted that it would be the last.
“Jo, you’re gonna be called to the U-20 team in just days,” Jill said as she bent down so that we were equal in height. “I encouraged them to do so. I think it would be a great opportunity.”
I looked back over to the rest of the team. But my eyes zeroed in on Hope. I knew what she would say when she found out that I wouldn’t be called to the team in August or September.
“The U-20 World Cup will be over before August. So what’s the point in keeping me out of the September camp?”
Hope would only boost and brag if I was gone longer than I needed to be. Plus, I didn’t want to lose the pace of play that came with the national team if I was gone for too long.
“Because you’re only fifteen, Jo. You will have to go to school and finish your education,” Jill said. I looked back at her. I didn’t care about that, I just cared about my future in soccer. “If your grades suffer too much, then I can’t call you up. You will be gone until late August if you guys make it to the finals.”
“So why have me go to the U-20 team instead of getting more practice with the senior team?”
“Because the U-20 team is going to a World Cup. It might not be the World Cup you were hoping for, but it will give you a taste of what it will be like next year,” Jill said as she sighed. I wondered if she would ever get tired of me and all my questions. “You’ll be expected to be a leader on the U-20 team as you’ve already been called up to the senior team. That will also be a good experience for you. I don’t expect that you’ll be seen as a leader on this team for years, maybe not until I’m gone even, but it will happen eventually, and leading a team at a World Cup, even a youth one, will be good for you.”
“Yeah, sure.”
Jill sighed as she patted my leg before standing up. If I had to prove myself to Jill at the youth level again, I was going to do it. Nothing would stop me from winning gold in August. Maybe then, the rest of the team would also start to see me as more than just some kid.

Swap - Jessie Fleming/Reader
just a little something for you guys that i've had an idea about for way too long (thank the USWNT v Canada game for this cause it made me remember how much i love Jessie)
prompt: Jessie and R have a long standing tradition of trading jerseys, but someone gets in the way of that.
warnings: none
words: 1,256
Tumblr media
(Y/N) POV
I grinned as I found Jessie in the crowd. I knew that the game didn’t actually end the way either of us wanted, but at least neither of us could be that upset since we didn’t lose.
“Swap with me?”
My eyes darted away from where they had locked onto Jessie to turn to Eriksson. I tilted my head in confusion. I had never actually talked to Eriksson before other than some light trash talk on the field.
“You want my jersey?”
Eriksson softly chuckled but nodded.
One of the best centerbacks in the game wanted my jersey.
It was still surreal that there were other players out there who would seek me out to get my jersey.
“Well, I feel like it would be fitting considering how much trouble you give me during these derby games and when you play against Sweden.”
“Oh.”
I still didn’t make a move to take my jersey off though. My eyes darted to where Jessie was talking to a couple of her teammates.
“So, how many of her jerseys do you have, and you still haven’t told her how you feel?”
My eyes snapped back to where Eriksson was standing. She was watching me, but I knew that she was aware of who I was staring at.
“I don’t know,” I shrugged as I ducked my head. It honestly was too high of a number to count now. We had gotten into the habit of trading our jerseys at least once a year when we played each other, and, honestly, even when we didn’t play against each other nationally, we still saved each other a jersey from the year. “We just kind of started as teenagers and never stopped. It’s our little tradition now when we play each other the first time of the year to swap.”
“How about this,” Eriksson started, causing me to look over at her, “you go tell Jessie how you actually feel about her, and I’ll wait until the next time we play to swap with you.”
I huffed a little at that. It wasn’t that I didn’t mind telling the world about Jessie and me, but Jessie was such a private person that I didn’t mind keeping our relationship from the world. Besides, our family and most of our friends knew.
Well, at least most of my friends knew. If Jessie’s captain didn’t even know then I wasn’t sure who all on her club team knew. I didn’t even know if any of them knew.
“I’d much rather just break tradition.”
Eriksson raised her eyebrows at that.
It wasn’t often that I would turn down a challenge. But if Jessie’s own teammates didn’t know, then I definitely didn’t want to risk them and the fans finding out about our relationship because I took Eriksson’s challenge.
“Didn’t think it was like you to turn down a challenge.”
“Not usually, no,” I said as I tugged my jersey over my head. “But there are some things that are better left the way they are. My friendship with Jessie isn’t one I’m going to risk for a jersey.”
“Wouldn’t she be more upset that you’re not trading with her?”
I shrugged at that. Jessie probably would be upset with me initially, but I figured she would probably get over it pretty quickly since I knew neither of us would be required to go in tomorrow. We always had the day after derbies off.
“I’ll trade with her next derby. And maybe you could convince Harder to trade with me the game after that?”
“I’ll mention it to Pernille.”
I grinned at that as Eriksson finally pulled her own jersey off. I had been wanting to trade with Pernille Harder for quite some time, but I never had gathered the courage to ask the forward I looked up to. I handed mine over to her as she handed her jersey to me. I wasn’t surprised either when we were asked to pose for a picture with each other.
Once the picture was over, I shook hands with Eriksson.
“You should still tell her,” Eriksson said as she pulled me closer to her. “I think you might be surprised with how she feels about you too.”
“We’ll see.”
Eriksson gave me a pat on the back before she was off towards Harder. I sighed as I shook my head. I turned to try and find Jessie; I wasn’t surprised to find her still with Nimah as they talked with Lotte and Leah. I grinned as I weaseled my way in between Leah and Jessie, but it dropped a bit as Jessie’s eyes darted down to the jersey in my hands before looking at me.
I didn’t pay too much attention to the conversation that the three English players were having as it was obviously more about their next camp. I nudged Jessie before nodding my head towards the tunnels.
Jessie glanced at Nimah before she nodded. I smiled a bit wider at that as the two of us split off with waves to our respective teammates. Jessie stayed quiet as the two of us headed toward the tunnel.
“So, my place or yours?” I asked. Jessie tilted her head to the side as she looked at me. “Well, normally the winner takes the loser home, but we drew.”
Jessie slowly nodded at that.
“Didn’t realize you still wanted to come home with me.”
My brow furrowed at that. I had no real idea why Jessie would think that I didn’t want to go home with her.
“Considering you swapped your jersey with someone else. Thought you of all people would keep with tradition.”
“That’s not fair.”
“You swapped with someone else.”
I rolled my eyes at that.
“Don’t roll your eyes at me.”
I huffed because I was sure that we were attracting quite a bit of unwanted attention from fans. I grabbed onto Jessie’s arm as I dragged her into the tunnel finally before heading toward a more secluded area of the Emirates.
“Look, I did it for you.”
“Doing it for me would have been swapping with me.”
“Are you jealous?”
Jessie scoffed at that as she began to shake her head.
“You are!”
“Am not!”
“Are so!”
“You can sleep on the couch then.”
I rolled my eyes at that. I knew that Jessie wouldn’t actually make me sleep on the couch, especially since we hadn’t been able to spend time with each other in the same place since the winter break. Facetime and phone calls only went so far.
“She wanted me to tell you how I felt,” I admitted. Jessie raised an eyebrow at that. “Eriksson. I told her it was tradition for us to switch jerseys and she told me that I could switch with you if I told you how I felt. I didn’t want to put you in the spot where you either had to out our relationship to your teammates if you haven’t told them or where you had to act like you rejected me. I know you want to keep us private from the public eye. So, I figured I could just swap with Eriksson this time and we’ll swap next time.”
“I get it the next time though,” Jessie said as she poked at my chest, “and I guess you can sleep in the bed with me since you did it to make sure that our relationship stayed out of the public eye.”
I grinned at that.
“Does that mean I finally get my kiss from you?”

Alessia Russo// Take on the world pt1
Warnings: fluff, mentions of anxiety, sickness-corona, it gets a bit angsty at the end, English isn’t my first language so there could be some grammar and spelling mistakes, it got pretty long so I hope you don’t mind
This story is based on the song „Take on the world“ by You me at six. The song gets a bigger role in the next part so if you haven’t heard it before go check it out🙃
The first time that you had met Alessia was in 2019 when you started your Freshman Year at UNC.
Alessia being a Junior and also Captain of the Tar Heels soon took you under her wing.
The two of you became inseparable in a really short time.
The team started to tease you endlessly but you didn’t mind it.
Lotte was the one that made you realize that you felt a bit more than just friendship for Alessia. She came to you after a really intense practice and basically told you to make a move already. And you did. After you ignored her for a week because you got to much into your own head.
Alessia noticed your absence and forced you to speak to her. It was the best thing that she could’ve done.
„Y/N what happend? Did I do something wrong?“ She had cornered you after the last training session of the week.
You just shook your head, painfully aware of how close she was.
„Just say the word. Whatever it is. I can see, see the pain in your eyes. I care for you. You know.“
„I’m sorry. I just… it just got all too much and than Lotte got me thinking… and you are my best friend I don’t want to lose you…“
„Hey hey breath. Look in my eyes, I will never desert you.“
And you did. Her blue eyes were filled with concern and something else. Something that was reflected in your own. She was just as scared as you.
In that moment you remembered something that your father had said to you when you were younger.
„You know, sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. Just literally twenty seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it.“
So your took your chance, be damned the consequences.
You leaned in and kissed her, slowly and with out much pressure, prepared for her stepping back or even pushing you away but she didn’t.
Alessia tensed for just a second before she realized what had happened.
She was the one to deepen the kiss, pulling you towards her.
The both of you couldn’t help the smile that broke out on your faces, that ultimately made you both stop the kiss.
„You have no idea how long I wanted to do that.“ Said the blonde when you looked at each other again.
She pulled you into a bone crushing hug. Oh how you loved Alessias hugs.
„If I didn’t make myself clear. I really really like you Lessi.“ You whispered in her ear still scared that she was somehow only messing with you.
„I really like you too. Y/n I would love for you to be my girlfriend, i care so much for you.“
Instead of giving her a verbal answer you just leaned in again and kissed her . This time the blonde striker kissed right back. It felt so right. It wasn’t your first kiss, but it felt so much better than any other kiss you had before.
Lotte would later tease the both of you that she was the reason the two of you had got together but she would shut up when the two of you started to kiss each other in front of her.
„Alright alright I stop, I don’t need to see the two of you shoving each other’s tongue down the other’s throat. O what have I done.“ Lotte shook her head disgusted but the smile on her face betrayed her. You could see how happy the defender was for you and her best friend.
Your first year at college was one of the best years of your life.
You felt like you were on cloud nine. Alessia and you were stronger than ever, wether it be on the field or off.
Alessia scored the goals, you gave the assists.
So when the new year came you were exited for what was coming.
2020 started as good as 2019 had ended. Alessia and you had both been called up for the senior team for the first time.
It was the highlight of your young career, something that you hade dreamed of since you were a little kid. But boy were you nervous and you weren’t the only one.
The day before you were meant to travel to base camp was spent with Alessia.
The whole day you could feel how nervous she was.
At lunch with your friends she zoned out every few minutes, her leg bouncing up and down until you laid your hand on her leg in silent support.
But that didn’t stop her from biting her lip.
You didn’t comment on it, just silently supporting her. You knew that she was in her own head and that it wouldnt help her to draw attention to her fidgety nervous self.
You were glad when Alessia asked you to sleep at hers and Lottes because you knew she wouldn’t be able to fall asleep otherwise and also because it would help you too.
She pulled you close once the two of you had settled in bed, silently rubbing her hand up and down your back. It was not only helping her but you too. The both of you relaxing for the first time today.
“Silence the voices, that haunt you inside.” You whispered in the blondes ear and you couldn’t see her smile slightly. Glad that the both out you knew each other so well.
“You deserve to be called up, you deserve this place. You don’t have to be great, hell you don’t even have to be anything. It’s our first camp, they don’t have any expectations. Just show them what you are made of, what you train for every day. And most importantly just be you.”
You smiled proudly at Alessia and kissed her forehead.
When she looked up into your eyes she could only see trust and love.
The national camps went better than expected for you as well as for Alessia.
But shortly after the international break everything became a lot messier.
In early March you watched the news at one training, seeing how the whole world started to shut down.
You could see the uncertainty in a lot of your international teammates.
Lotte and Lessi also looking on in concern, especially when pictures from the hospitals in Italy were showed.
You could see the worry in Alessias eyes, so you pulled her into your arms, squeezing her tight.
The next evening you walked with Lotte to her dorm after class.
When Lotte opened her dorm room you saw Lessi sitting on her bed, talking on her phone, tears silently running down her cheeks.
You immediately walked over to her, pulling her into you and silently supporting her.
“Yeah mum, I… look into flights… I try to be home as soon as possible.”
She said and your heart sank.
Lotte had come over as well and had sat down on your Girlfriends bed.
Alessia ended the call and sunk into your arms.
“My Nonno got covid, he was admitted to the hospital yesterday but my Nonna said that they don’t have enough rooms anymore so he ha sto stay in the corridor.
My Mother is scared for him, the situation in Italy is escalating so quickly. She wants me home before we are not allowed to travel home anymore.” She said and you watched as more tears streamed down her face.
“My mother called me this morning. She wants me back home too.” Said Lotte and pulled her best friend into her own arms.
You remained quiet.
Of course you understood that Alessias and Lottes parents wanted them home. The virus was spreading quicker than anyone had anticipated.
But you couldn’t help but feel a bit selfish. You didn’t want them to go back to England, to leave you here in America, but most of all you were scared what that would mean for yours and Lessis relationship, but you loved her and you knew that it was the best for her to go back.
„I don’t want to leave. I know I am selfish and that it’s best to go home and be with my family but I don’t want to leave you.“ Alessia was close to tears again when she looked at you, her lip quivering.
„I know Baby, I don’t want you to leave either, but it is the right decision.“
You noticed that Lotte had slipped out of the room to give you some space and you were grateful.
You kissed her soft lips, trying to convey your own feelings, your love for her.
„Love, I think over the last few months was fortunate to get to know you and I would say that I sometimes know you better than you know yourself.“ You were glad when Less chuckled.
„Do you remember what you said to me that day, we got together? Look in my eyes, I will never desert you. I say the same to you now. I know it will not be easy, but you just need to say the word and we will take on the world together, okay?!“
The smile on Alessias face was all you needed for you to know that whatever may happen in the future the two of you would be alright. You knew that even around 6.500 kilometers wouldn’t destroy what Alessia and you had.
Still you were not prepared for the day were Alessia and Lotte actually left.
It was one week after that fateful evening. Lotte and Alessia had talked with your coaches and teachers and they weren’t the only international students that were leaving campus.
The Virus had only spread and even your own family became increasingly worried. So you too were thinking about leaving campus to go back to your family in New York.
With the pressure of international flights being canceled left and right, the English girls had booked the next possible flight. So with in 5 days they had packed their thinks and were now standing with you at the airport, luggage by there side.
All three of you had tears streaming down your faces. No one knew what the next few days, weeks or even months would bring.
„I will miss you guys! Just promise that whatever happens we stay in contact, okay?!“
Alessia was hugging you her face hidden in your hair, hands grabbing your shirt as if she could take you with her.
„I love you so much! No matter what ok? We will call and face time and we will back in no time.“ Your heart shattered hearing her broken voice. And you couldn’t help but just nod. You pulled Lotte into your hug, you would miss the brown haired defender almost as much as Alessia. She had become one of your closest friends over the last year.
„I am just one phone call away. No matter the time difference. Just call me whenever alright? You too Lotte! You don’t know how much the two of you mean to me.“
„You too Y/n. We will see each other soon.“
With one last hug you said goodbye to Lotte before pulling Lessi into you for one last time.
„I‘ll miss you so much!“ You whispered and kissed her hard. A promise of Love and forever.
„Remember, we will face the world together ok? We will be alright.“
Alessia was looking into your eyes with so much love that you could only smile before kissing her one last time.
With a heavy heart you watched as the two girls left for security. One last wave from the two and they were gone.
Gone for an unknown amount of time
