Summary: Dean gets Cas to open up a little more about how his illness will impact his relationship with Heaven.

Dean had to hand it to him – Cas was more stubborn than anyone else he knew.

That list was hard to top.

Somehow, he did manage to get better, or at least he seemed to as the next two weeks crept by. As Castiel did so, he also got better at pretending to be fully healed, so Dean took everything with a grain of salt. At least Cas finally seemed to understand that he couldn’t keep pushing himself as recklessly – Dean had gotten at least three papercuts and a headache in the last week, and Castiel hadn’t done more than give him a tired once-over. He hadn’t even tried to heal anyone or anything since that day in the kitchen.

Still, Dean had his doubts and he had his questions. More than anything, he just wanted to check in and know that Cas was going to be okay. He got his chance one afternoon in the library as they worked through the lore.

when cas doesn't have his angel powers, he still automatically put his fingers to dean's temple to heal him if he's hurt. and even though it doesn't work, dean will quietly murmur, "all better, nice and healed," and he takes cas' fingers from his forehead and places a soft kiss to cas' fingertips just to reassure his angel that he's okay

He never did find out why they started, but he certainly did notice when.

They were sitting on the couch one winter evening, watching some kind of western that Dean had picked out, and Castiel was watching with apparent contentment. It was perfect. Well, almost. A small patch of his back itched, and no matter how he tried to scratch it, it wouldn't go away. He twisted and reached and shifted so many times that Cas took notice, going so far as to pause their movie.

“Dean. Are you alright?”

“Yeah.”

Cas gave him a look.

“Yeah, just have an itch I can’t scratch.”

“Allow me.”

Castiel had reached across the space between them, offering sweet relief for a few seconds.

“Better?”

“Mmm.”

Even so, the itch hadn’t been gone. Only minutes later, Dean had stood abruptly and walked away, driven mad by the itching.

obsessed with the fact that dean is this really hot dude and people know it, they notice that first, and cas is over here throwing heart eyes at him for completely different reasons, just like his soul is so beautiful. he’s humanity in its purest form. i want to give him a home

and at the same time cas is this all-powerful celestial eldritch monster and most people are kind of afraid of him at first, and dean is just in awe but for completely different reasons, just like he’s so silly and hot and dorky and great. he’s my favorite person. i wanna kiss him on the mouth

cas brings dean a 4am cup of coffee while they're still researching in the bunker library; another all nighter to save the innocent. cas puts the steaming mug down in front of dean, and dean snags cas' sleeve, yanking him down and kissing him on the cheek as a thank you; just barely catching the side of cas' mouth. it isnt until dean has pulled away and taken a large sip of coffee he realizes with startling clarity that he just kissed cas for the very first time
