2023 drama recap
Note: these are dramas (webdramas & one cdrama & one Western show as well) that I’ve watched this year, but not all of them were released in 2023.
Shadow&bone s2: not gonna lie, this one felt messy and a bit all over the place, but I guess when you read the books and the TV show is a mix of different book series, it's expected
My review: 6/10
Use for my talent: the supporting couples carry this show on the back, I have nothing more positive to say because the main leads' love triangle is super annoying and the kiss scenes are so forced and unrealistic, it's not even funny anymore :') I haven't yet watched it until the end, but so far:
My review: 6.5/10
When i fly towards you (cdrama): this was a charming drama that got me until the second half of it when it lost its charm, and I realised that it's way too unrealistic, there were a lot of cringey scenes, the end felt dragged and repetitive, and I didn't really see any character development even though we saw the main leads growing up (but props to the second leads, I really loved their dynamics!)
My review: 6.5/10
User not found (webdrama): it was more enjoyable than annoying, but overall, it did have some unnecessary drama and the main female lead's acting wasn't up to my liking
My review: 7/10
Tracer: I'm pretty sure it would have been more enjoyable if we had managed to find good subtitles for it because the acting was really good, but I didn't get the plotline fully because of the Google Translate-like subs, so yeah, that's why it's only 7.5 (but Im Siwan's acting is 10/10 as always)
My review: 7.5/10
The witch store reopens (webdrama): it was perfectly fine considering that it was a webdrama (so expect some overexaggerated acting and such), it was cute, funny, and the leads (Yonghee and Yerin) did well
My review: 8/10
The heavenly idol: I've watched it for Kim Minkyu, but it was unexpectedly serious at times (touched upon bullying, double standards for idols, the nasty parts of the showbiz industry), so it did surprise me positively - however, the special effects were a bit odd at times, and you can't take the storyline seriously, but if you let go of reality, it's pretty enjoyable
My review: 8/10
Revenge of others: it was pretty dramatic at times and I didn't necessary like the big plot twist at the end, but I really loved the investigating part of it and the whole storyline wasn't that predictable
My review: 8.5/10
Seasons of blossom: this definitely delivered some emotional punches (read: I cried), and the acting was really good on the leads' part, some other acting was kind of forced, but overall, it was a meaningful drama
My review: 9/10
Crash course in romance: me and my mother both really enjoyed this show, we were waiting for the episodes to come out week after week. It was really funny, had some serious topics to touch upon, and the acting was overall really good. I deduct 0.5 point because sometimes I didn't feel the balance between the crime part (yes, there's one like that) and the main storyline, it wasn't that annoying, but I have to mention it
My review: 9.5/10
King the land: it was similar to Business Proposal to me in terms of how much I enjoyed it and why I deduct 0.5 point - it was funny, it was cute, the acting was really good, but there were a lot of clichés that you can't help but shrug off because it was really enjoyable
My review: 9.5/10
Castaway diva: I have 3 episodes left, so this is not my final verdict, but it's been really good so far, I really love the way they touch upon such sensitive topics, and the acting ranges here on the three main leads' parts are just wow! (I only deduct 0.5 point because of Yoon Ranjoo and her whole showbiz team, it's like they can't decide which side they want to be on)
My review: 9.5/10
Twinkling watermelon: my favourite drama this year, genuinely a 10/10, it was funny, heart-warming, heart-breaking, and very meaningful, would highly recommend
My review: 10/10

C-Drama Year-End Awards
Ok, I haven't watched that many yet in the grand scheme of things but I've had such a fun year getting into c-dramas!! So even if it's just for my own logging purposes, I wanted to share the ones I've seen so far and then review them by way of made-up awards.
The shows up for consideration (roughly in order of viewing) are: Put Your Head On My Shoulder (致我们暖暖的小时光), Use For My Talent (我亲爱的小洁癖), Love O2O (微微一笑很倾城), Perfect and Casual (完美先生和差不多小姐), A Little Thing Called First Love (初恋那件小事), and My Little Happiness (我的小确幸).
FAVORITE FEMALE LEAD'S ARC: Xia Miao Miao (played by Zhao Jinmai 趙今麥) from A Little Thing Called First Love
Tumblr media
FAVORITE MALE LEAD'S ARC: Gu Ren Qi (played by Jasper Liu) from Use For My Talent (as someone who also has OCD like Gu Ren Qi, I thought it was handled very compassionately, if not always entirely accurately)
Tumblr media
BEST CHEMISTRY BETWEEN LEADS: Xing Fei and Tang Xiao Tian from My Little Happiness!!!! (Also really fun watching them have such chemistry when the same actors play a failed couple in Put Your Head On My Shoulder lol)
Tumblr media
FAVORITE CDRAMA ACTRESS: Xing Fei (Put Your Head On My Shoulder and My Little Happiness)
Tumblr media
FAVORITE SECONDARY COUPLE: Wen Rang and Zhou Cheng Cheng in My Little Happiness
Tumblr media
FAVORITE THEME SONG: Love O2O - 一笑倾城(《微微一笑很倾城》电视剧片头曲) by Silence Wang
Tumblr media
FAVORITE OVERALL SOUNDTRACK: A Little Thing Called First Love (probably in part because the male lead is also the main singer on many of the songs!)
Tumblr media
THE MALE LEAD I'D ACTUALLY DATE: Zhang Sinian (played by Miles Wei) from Perfect and Casual... IYKYK 😘
Tumblr media
Random comments: I definitely felt the most invested in A Little Thing Called First Love, and felt like it accomplished a lot through the course of the show, but ultimately don't know if I would name it as my overall favorite so far because the last few episodes were so underwhelming. (It ends happily, that's not the problem, it just squeezes in a misunderstanding trope at the 11th hour for no reason.) Use For My Talent had some AMAZING scenes and I loved Gu Ren Qi, but the love triangle plot DROVE ME INSANE. I don't mind a triangle if it's written well (like Put Your Head On My Shoulder), but this guy made me so angry lmao. Love O2O had such a GREAT concept, but I felt like the writing didn't live up to the opportunities afforded by the concept—I wanted to love it but kept mentally writing fanfics instead. Perfect and Casual has my heart for its marriage of convenience/forced proximity plot and the dynamic between the couple. My Little Happiness was freaking adorable and made me happy in every single episode, and I cared as much about the secondary couple as the primary couple. And finally, Put Your Head On My Shoulder will always hold a special place as my first ever c-drama, but it's also excellent and their little apartment is my mental happy place. 🥰
I want to hear your favorites and awards! 👀

Any Kdrama suggestions?
Or
Cdrama?
I'm interested in The Rational Life on Netflix
It looks good but there are soooooooo many episodes.
I'm also interested in Miss the Dragon and World's Strongest Bodyguard (I think that's what it's called)
How were they, but no Spoilers please?
My favorite dramas are 100 Days My Prince and Use for My Talent
I didn't like Crowned Clown, My Holo Love, or Nevertheless (how long was I supposed to watch Nabi suffer, all she wanted was for someone to make her Seaweed soup on her birthday. Is that too much to ask for?)

the thing about art is that it was always supposed to be about us, about the human-ness of us, the impossible and beautiful reality that we (for centuries) have stood still, transfixed by music. that we can close our eyes and cry about the same book passage; the events of which aren't real and never happened. theatre in shakespeare's time was as real as it is now; we all laugh at the same cue (pursued by bear), separated hundreds of years apart.
three years ago my housemates were jamming outdoors, just messing around with their instruments, mostly just making noise. our neighbors - shy, cautious, a little sheepish - sat down and started playing. i don't really know how it happened; i was somehow in charge of dancing, barefoot and laughing - but i looked up, and our yard was full of people. kids stacked on the shoulders of parents. old couples holding hands. someone had brought sidewalk chalk; our front walk became a riot of color. someone ran in with a flute and played the most astounding solo i've ever heard in my life, upright and wiggling, skipping as she did so. she only paused because the violin player was kicking his heels up and she was laughing too hard to continue.
two weeks ago my friend and i met in the basement of her apartment complex so she could work out a piece of choreography. we have a language barrier - i'm not as good at ASL as i'd like to be (i'm still learning!) so we communicate mostly through the notes app and this strange secret language of dancers - we have the same movement vocabulary. the two of us cracking jokes at each other, giggling. there were kids in the basement too, who had been playing soccer until we took up the far corner of the room. one by one they made their slow way over like feral cats - they laid down, belly-flat against the floor, just watching. my friend and i were not in tutus - we were in slouchy shirts and leggings and socks. nothing fancy. but when i asked the kids would you like to dance too? they were immediately on their feet and spinning. i love when people dance with abandon, the wild and leggy fervor of childhood. i think it is gorgeous.
their adults showed up eventually, and a few of them said hey, let's not bother the nice ladies. but they weren't bothering us, they were just having fun - so. a few of the adults started dancing awkwardly along, and then most of the adults. someone brought down a better sound system. someone opened a watermelon and started handing out slices. it was 8 PM on a tuesday and nothing about that day was particularly special; we might as well party.
one time i hosted a free "paint along party" and about 20 adults worked quietly while i taught them how to paint nessie. one time i taught community dance classes and so many people showed up we had to move the whole thing outside. we used chairs and coatracks to balance. one time i showed up to a random band playing in a random location, and the whole thing got packed so quickly we had to open every door and window in the place.
i don't think i can tell you how much people want to be making art and engaging with art. they want to, desperately. so many people would be stunning artists, but they are lied to and told from a very young age that art only matters if it is planned, purposeful, beautiful. that if you have an idea, you need to be able to express it perfectly. this is not true. you don't get only 1 chance to communicate. you can spend a lifetime trying to display exactly 1 thing you can never quite language. you can just express the "!!??!!!"-ing-ness of being alive; that is something none of us really have a full grasp on creating. and even when we can't make what we want - god, it feels fucking good to try. and even just enjoying other artists - art inherently rewards the act of participating.
i wasn't raised wealthy. whenever i make a post about art, someone inevitably says something along the lines of well some of us aren't that lucky. i am not lucky; i am dedicated. i have a chronic condition, my hands are constantly in pain. i am not neurotypical, nor was i raised safe. i worked 5-7 jobs while some of these memories happened. i chose art because it mattered to me more than anything on this fucking planet - i would work 80 hours a week just so i could afford to write in 3 of them.
and i am still telling you - if you are called to make art, you are called to the part of you that is human. you do not have to be good at it. you do not have to have enormous amounts of privilege. you can just... give yourself permission. you can just say i'm going to make something now and then - go out and make it. raquel it won't be good though that is okay, i don't make good things every time either. besides. who decides what good even is?
you weren't called to make something because you wanted it to be good, you were called to make something because it is a basic instinct. you were taught to judge its worth and over-value perfection. you are doing something impossible. a god's ability: from nothing springs creation.
a few months ago i found a piece of sidewalk chalk and started drawing. within an hour i had somehow collected a small classroom of young children. their adults often brought their own chalk. i looked up and about fifteen families had joined me from around the block. we drew scrangly unicorns and messed up flowers and one girl asked me to draw charizard. i am not good at drawing. i basically drew an orb with wings. you would have thought i drew her the mona lisa. she dragged her mother over and pointed and said look! look what she drew for me and, in the moment, i admit i flinched (sorry, i don't -). but the mother just grinned at me. he's beautiful. and then she sat down and started drawing.
someone took a picture of it. it was in the local newspaper. the summary underneath said joyful and spontaneous artwork from local artists springs up in public gallery. in the picture, a little girl covered in chalk dust has her head thrown back, delighted. laughing.
#writeblr#warm up#this is longer than i wanted i really considered removing that part about myself and what i went thru#but i think it really fucking bothers me that EVERY time i talk about being an artist#ppl assume i just like. had the skill and ability to drop everything and pay for grad school.#like sir i grew up poor. my house wasn't a safe space. i gave up a FREE RIDE TO LAW SCHOOL. for THIS. bc i chose it.#was it fucking hard? was i choosing the hard thing?? yes.#but we need to stop seeing artists as lazy layabouts that can ''afford'' to just ''sit around and create''#when MANY - if not MOST - of us are NOT like that. we have to work our fucking ASSES off. hard work. long and hard work#part of valuing artists is recognizing the amount we sacrifice to make our art. bc it doesn't just#like HAPPEN to us. also btw it rarely has anything to do with true talent.#speaking as someone with a chronic condition i hate when ppl are like u have it easy. like actively as i'm writing this my hands r#ACTIVELY hurting me. i haven't been posting bc my left hand was curled in a claw for the last week#this isn't fucking luck. after a certain point it's not even TALENT. it's dedication & sacrifice.#''u get to flounce around and do nothing with ur life'' is a narrative that is a direct result of capitalism#imagine if we said that about literally any other profession.#''oh so u give up 10 yrs of ur life to be a doctor? u sacrifice having a social life and u get SUPER in debt?#u need to work countless hours and it will often be thankless? well i wish i was that lucky''#we should be applying that logic to landlords ONLY#''oh ur mom and dad gave u the money to buy a house? and all u did was paint it white and rent it? huh.''

Fun fact! 🤓☝️ I'm going ballistic and feral for dilf!keegan and babysitter!reader. Your mind. Insane.
Also I'd love some dilf!keegan taking fem!reader for a shopping trip, and admiring how reader does cute little twirls in the very expensive dresses he gets her to try on <3 he's so addicted to spoiling her
(afab!reader, implied age-gap (reader in 20s))
BAHAHA i've another fun fact for you
dilf!keegan who has you go shopping with him and his daughter, asks you to because he claims you know her style best. the most he can do is just hope to find matching socks in her drawer and to get her shirt on the right way. and what better way to reward you for helping his daughter get some new pretty dresses than to buy you some of your own? ;)
you're sitting on the couch with keegan, him slouched over and an arm thrown over the back of it while you sit pin straight, hyperaware of how close he is to you. you don't want to make it look like anything strange in front of his daughter, who's twirling in front of you to show off her new dress.
keegan watches you with a side glance, a growing smirk on his face as he pays more attention to your fidgeting over his giggling daughter. she isn't any wiser at all when she bounds over to you and asks if you like her dress? and you say of course! it's so cute. you think it's similar to one of the dresses you've worn before, probably on purpose as she begged her dad to get her something just like yours. of course he'd never be able to deny his favorite girl, especially if she wants to look like his other one.
"you look so pretty, babe," you coo at her. "you say thank you to your dad for buying you such a pretty thing?" keegan grins as his daughter runs toward him and jumps onto his stomach.
"give daddy a kiss, sweetheart," he says as his daughter plasters wet kisses all over his face. you think there's no better look on his face as he looks at her so adoringly. he pulls her back and then turns to you with a smirk. okay, maybe there's a better look for him. "hey, baby, why don't you get your pretty sitter her gift, hm?"
and you arch an eyebrow as his daughter stomps out of the room to go grab whatever gift he's talking about. he gives you that sinful half smile and shifts again so you can see the movement of his hips. you try not to trail your eyes down to the bulge in his sweatpants. you do anyways but not before he clears his throat and scratches his stubble with a cocky grin. it's not a moment too soon as his daughter comes in with a little bag.
"what's this?" you grin at her, so grateful for the distraction. you take the bag from her and set it on your lap, using it as a cover as you squeeze your thighs together when he lets that low, rumbly chuckle of his.
his daughter climbs onto his lap and giggles at you. keegan gives her a kiss on the head and gestures for you to go change. "a present!" she says.
"as thanks for taking care of my baby," keegan says and rakes his eyes down your body. he lets out an approving hum as he looks at the bag again. "go try it on, should fit just fine."
you nod and go to the bathroom to change. you're actually pretty surprised at how well it does fit you just like he said. you wonder if it's all the times he put his hand on your waist, claiming to move you to the side to get past you. using his hand and body as a measurement of how the dress you put on fits in proportion to holding it to him. you try not to think too much about his hands on your body as you exit the bathroom and go to the living room.
his daughter excitedly gasps when she hears you coming over and claps her hands. "pretty!"
"come give us a twirl," keegan says and tilts his head towards the middle of the room where his daughter was twirling a little bit ago. you shyly walk over and do a small twirl, going again when she asks you to go "again, again!"
"it fits good," you say while fidgeting with the skirt of it. you will yourself to meet keegan's eyes and he gives you a proud once over.
"tell him thank you!" his daughter teases, sliding herself down the couch playfully as she throws the words back at your face. taking the opportunity, keegan leans back into the couch abd beckons you over with two fingers. his eyes gleam with mischief as he says his next words.
"come give daddy a kiss, sweetheart."
