i have. some thoughts i wanna dump out about aini actually and if i do it on twitter my friend WHO STILL HASN'T STARTED THE GAME will see it and then i'll scream because i've done a fantastic job of not spoiling anything for her SO ANYWAY ANI THOUGHTS TIME. ALSO this isn't everything i just wanna get the loudest thoughts out

i'll be honest i wasn't expecting to like tama much but she ended up being one of my favorites actually. funny little ai-ball so silly and actually such a sweetheart. and she supports the lgbtq. icon

RYUKI i am sooooooooo normal about him. sosososososo SO normal. i started playing and when it got to his pov i really was like the "oh he's just a little guy! oh he's a bit fucked up actually" meme and just. gently holding him. uchikoshi dumped all the trauma he could on this man just to see how much it would take to completely break him i swear. also i kept making fun of him and his so obvious crush on date but also i completely understood because i too love pathetic men. which i'll be honest i was not expecting him to. actually have a thing for date. gay rights!

speaking of date, all i am saying is: i understand where ryuki is coming from. i want to kiss him actually. pathetic man. why are you so hot with an eyepatch.

mizuki all grown up! i loved her interactions with aiba and boss, they are just so good hsjejf.

ALSO i honestly? really liked just boss's casual mention that she has a daughter (bibi) in throwaway lines and just! i didn't think anything of it at the time but god damn uchikoshi you mastermind

mmmmmmmmm one thing i'm really Not Fond Of is kizuna and lien's relationship like. i think if lien didn't literally hit on her the moment he saw her and LITERALLY FOLLOWED HER to pressure her into a relationship, and if kizuna was not 18 AT THE TIME, i'd be at least a little okay with it? individually i think they're pretty good characters and i really do like their arcs but their relationship just ruins it for me. i was REALLY hoping they wouldn't go that way, ESPECIALLY with kizuna shooting down his advances initially but i'm clearly asking for too much from a spike chunsoft game. same goes for gen and amame but to a lesser extent because 1 that remains unrequited (or at least i think it does. i think amame just sees gen as a father figure of sorts) and 2 the two don't eat up screenstime for a focus on a romantic relationship and therefore i can simply Look Away. I Do Not See. also mizuki wouldn't encourage that who brainwashed her into thinking it's okay

SPEAKING OF, i actually did not expect amame to be a major character in the game (if that was shown in a trailer then i am a clown bc i watched like. the initial teaser and the reveal trailer and that's it) and i especially didn't expect to like her as much as i did. i loved how creepy her somniums were AND how the answers to the questions in second one as mizuki were the same as the ones in the first as ryuki like. sorta foreshadowing her whole story? ALSO SHE STRAIGHT UP MURDERED URU I HONESTLY DIDN'T EXPECT THAT. all i have left to say is god damn faye mata is a good va. also the gen and amame route nearly made me cry. i did in fact have tears welling up.

i want to punt chikara into the ocean. that's all

OH ALSO the masked woman/bibi's somnium was obnoxious tbh. i got so fuckin frustrated with it. tho idk if i just got lucky or what but somehow not looking at chikara made him? not notice me as much? i have no fuckin clue. anyway

speaking of somniums, tokiko's was super creepy but like. in a different way than amame's. you know what i mean. the only thing i didn't like about it was the ringing sound in the soundtrack. and how slowly you move, especially when you're swimming to the nirvana initiative for the last mental lock. agony.

the explosion route hurt me in ways i cannot describe. i was semi-livemessaging my friend bits and pieces of my playthrough in the most spoiler free way i could and. i'm just putting these here and letting them speak for me

ALSO I WANNA SHARE ryuki taking a bullet for date and seemingly dying IN HIS ARMS NO LESS made me almost cry AGAIN. THIS GAME BROKE ME EMOTIONALLY THREE TIMES. i genuinely thought he was dead too and i did not know how to feel. and as funny as date straight up acting like a cat with his head on hitomi's lap was, the way he reacts when mizuki asks him about ryuki just. ow?

i'm not saying i lowkey ship date and ryuki but i lowkey ship date and ryuki

on a lighter note, kizuna breaking out a gatling gun and screaming "come get some, motherfuckers" made me laugh like. way harder than it probably should've. i saved it on my switch because it was too funny not to.

ALSO the whole thing with the true flowchart confused me at first but after thinking it over and getting it explained a bit, it makes a lot more sense. especially since there are two mizukis and the whole thing with aiba being on a secret mission, and also the fact mizuki didn't question date being alive when he saved her from tearer in the abandoned warehouse.

tearer's somnium was literally just a walking zero escape reference and i was living. i didn't properly finish all the puzzles in one room because the first two digits for the password were 9 and i went "999 moment" and got it right. and laughed hysterically. i think the music for those rooms was taken straight from ZE too but idk for sure. i wouldn't be surprised tho

as much as i Don't Like moma being a massive creep in this game, the bits with the vochaloco were pretty funny to me. i hope iris's va had fun recording those lines because hearing iris say fuck is great.

i think we deserved to see/hear marco personally. there are concepts of a like. genderbent aiba in the dream album (i don't remember which somnium) and i know it sounds basic and lazy of me but i'm pretending that's what he looks like.

i've been typing for like two hours lmao but anyway my conclusion in short is the game has a few problems but overall i had a great time with it. also ryuki is a fruit. that's all

depends on my mood, but I'm always up for Air Stream from the Uru soundtrack!!! it's very calming and takes me back to when I was little. We had Uru on a disc, so I loved asking if I could play it. It was one of the few games on my mom's computer, not my dad's.

hiii here r my aini thoughts !! i meant to post this when i finished it two days ago but i wanted my thoughts to marinate before i rlly had like. any concrete opinions so here we go. spoilers under the readmore:

writing:

-okay so like .. i personally rlly enjoyed a majority of story beats including the twists. like the first game, i rlly enjoyed how every character is interconnected in some way, from chikara and tokiko being the parents of jin furue and experimenting on him and uru to chikara experimenting on three major characters, mizuki, bibi and shoma.

-amame going from a side character in the first game to the culprit in second game is just??? HELLO?4/$;!$2 in the best way ofc. i love a good revenge plot. hate how they arrested her tho,, god forbid women do anything

-i know some ppl have mixed thoughts on ryuki but i personally adore him fjshdjw i love his gay little crush on date. i don't ship them personally but yeah <3 i do wish that he was more involved w the story more?? like why just play as him in his route then completely throw him away in favor of mizuki only for him to have a rushed arc from date's motivational speech. WHERES HIS RECOVERY ARC I NEED IT ..... THEY DID HIM SO DIRTY

-speaking of which his and tama's dynamic is rlly good i preferred it over mizuki/aiba's. i do think it's kinda confusing tho bc she's meant to be a concerned mother figure to make up for his lack of one but also does like ??? kinky shit to him??? unless that's a joke idk

-also the death scare my behated. why did they do that. whyd they make me cry only for him to be brought back 😭

gameplay:

-the somniums r fun as always but also RLLY FRUSTRATING LIKE HELLO 😭 a lot of them play off of metaphors so sometiems it was hard for me to like. do things in a specific amount of time but i'm glad i was able to pull thru without a walkthru, esp since for the most part, i couldn't as the games still new. tokiko and chikara's somniums my behated

-i rlly rlly enjoy the new vr investigations, and having the characters investigate the crime scene and reenact it while in a space that allows u to not miss any details

-the scenes where u hafta like use specific commands to fight back against for example, naix members was Hell on switch. esp since my controllers drift often and i wasn't able to input the command the first time. also the fact that u hafta start the cutscene all over again 🥲

characters

-i mentioned the characters briefly in the previous sections but i rlly enjoyed seeing the returning characters w a fresh new coating of paint. the timeskip designs r rlly good as well

-the new chars r also rlly compelling and they managed to make a majority of side characters major key players in the story and im sure that's good news for a majority of side character likers

-as much as i miss date as a protag, i think his placement in the story as just some dude tryna ruin tearer's plan behind the scenes fits him fsr

-the only character i honestly hated was lien like i thought his whole thing abt not being a locksmith anymore ajd redeeming himself was fine but why???? him falling in love w a high schooler and somehow managing to get w her six years later even tho he literally STALKED her. it would have been fine if they knew each other after the timeskip ajd he didn't pull all that shit but noooooo. gen and amame's dynamic is alos super weird for the same reason like he sees her as a daughter but is??? in love w her???? wtf :[

-a lot of times my game was crashing which i guess is typical for a new game but ??? i rlly hope this fix this if i ever go for a replay

-i figured w date no longer the protag, there'd be less anime bullshit/sex jokes/weird age gaps but i guess not :[ like whys there two possible relationships that involve a high schooler and an adult (even in the context of the time skip, it's weird as they met them as high schoolers) and moma still being weird towards iris like. overall thoughts

despite the many critiques i have abt the game, i do think it's a rlly good sequel. is it better than the first game? i don't think so, but i still enjoyed it and any critique of the game i've seen so far has been warranted. i just hope that if there's ever a sequel, they answer specific questions (ex. mizuki's real parents), don't prioritize certain characters that leads to other characters not being as fleshed out, and tone down the horny bullshit. 9/10 may play again

OK so my general thoughts on Nirvana Initiative. Major spoilers for the entire game.

Looking purely at story, I think the original was tighter/more well executed, but I ENJOYED this one more overall I guess? Things I Liked

I LOVED the protagonists. Obviously I'm (like many others) obsessed with Ryuki, he completely defied my expectations. The choice to make him canon bi and mentally ill was awesome, as someone who is both. I also liked both Mizukis and their snark. The relationship/dynamic between the two after the reveal is cute. I like Mizuki Date, who's been deprived of affection most of her life, getting a loving and caring sister. They're similar but there are subtle differences between them. Boss being second Mizuki’s mom is really funny. Definitely my favorite set of leads from any Uchikoshi game.

I also liked the supporting cast in this game more than in the previous one. Tokiko is a definite favorite-- she's a fascinating character. I really dug both Shoma and Amame and their struggles as well.

the English voice acting was absolutely fucking incredible, I literally could not stop praising it. Every actor did a phenomenal job. Honestly it's one of the best English dubs I've ever heard, hands down. Shout out to Corina Boettger as Mizuki, especially after the reveal.

Heavier lean into horror my beloved

Gameplay improvements were nice, I like that they added the crime scene investigation sequences so there was a little more "active" gameplay outside the Somniums. It's also nice to play the protags directly for those parts.

The Somniums were top notch overall, head and shoulders over the last game. They introduced a lot of variety and unexpected mechanics to them. My favorite was probably the Masked Woman's Somnium. Genuinely scared the crap out of me in multiple ways. But honorable mentions go to Tokiko, Amame (especially the first one), and Iris.

Lots of little extra details that weren't necessary but flesh out the game, like that tamagotchi mini game, the therapy/dressup games with Aiba and Tama, Wink Psyncs, etc. It shows that a lot of care was put into the game.

Character animations are great, and this is especially evident in the action scenes. They're totally insane for a visual novel and very entertaining to watch. It's just leagues better than the clunky mess that was ZTD.

Great soundtrack with a mix of old and new tracks. There's an impressive variety of songs and tones.

I like details/gags from the last game playing a more prominent role in this one. Naixatloz is the obvious one. Mizuki's super strength having an actual cause is another. It's a connection that doesn't feel gratuitous, unlike some others.

I... like the twist lol. I COMPLETELY understand why some people don't. It's contrived as fuck. But personally I found it fun as a player, even if it doesn't directly affect the plot. I liked picking up on the hints that something was off with the timeline and felt very satisfied when the official reveal happens. I like the reveal with the Masked Woman’s identity. I'm interested to see how replaying the game feels knowing the actual order of events.

I like that plot details are straight up just... in some of the character bios. Most obvious examples are Amame (with the right/left side thing) and Boss (literally says Mizuki is her daughter). Like... they play to one's assumptions and then read much different after certain reveals.

Making Amame the person who murdered Uru is incredibly based, I'm sorry. Love making a background joke character important later.

I thought the secret nil ending was fucking incredible. Seriously. It might be one of my favorite Uchikoshi endings. The strange and surreal tone to it... which comes off in different ways. Like the moment you realize you can walk through the wall. Then Ryuki feeling almost uneasy that everything just... worked out in this timeline. It's good everyone survived, but that also means a lot of meaningful things never happened. Everything is beautiful and nothing hurts... but it feels off. Tama assuming Ryuki's knowledge is just a product of his hallucinationatory episodes rather than the player telling him what will happen. And then Tokiko's closing lines... the butterfly dream... I think it'll haunt me for a while.

Things I'm Critical Of

Honestly, including (close to) the entire original cast was unnecessary and I think the story suffers for it. I understand why characters like Mizuki and Aiba are here, since they're literal protags. And ultimately I understand Date, Boss, and Pewter's roles in the story. But just about everyone else could have been cut. Did we really need MULTIPLE scenes with the fucking... cab driver from the first game? As funny as it is, did So really need a SECOND illegitimate serial killer child? I don't mind some fanservice here and there (like, I ate up the ZE references), but it was way too much.

Integrated with the above, the obsession with leaving the first game unspoiled also hurts the story. Date obviously suffers the most here since he's thrown back into Saito's body for the entire game JUST to hide the Falco spoiler. If someone jumps into a sequel they should expect at least some spoilers, imo. I think VLR's approach of spoiling some details of the previous game but not all would have been much better. AI is far from the only piece of media guilty of this, but I think the trend of avoiding spoilers NO MATTER WHAT is stupid at best and actively harms ongoing series/stories at worst.

Some of the puzzles sucked; there's a few crime scene ones that are very obtuse. It's frustrating because these are the only puzzles where characters actually insult you for not knowing the answer. Aiba, if you know the fucking solution, just tell me, or give me a hint or something! Clearly I don't get it!

Dear fucking God did they beat some jokes into the ground. Please stop with the porno mag thing. I found it funny in the first game and MAYBE the first time it came up here. After that I wanted to jump out the window.

Resolution End is ultimately too silly for me. I don't mind the big dance number-- I expected it-- but like... the Mizukis launching after the rocket on their bikes? Come on, lol. I know these games get silly at parts but that was a bit much.

I think some characters were underutilized, like Gen. Kizuna's character ends up revolving around her relationship with Lien, which I really didn't give a shit about, lol.

Best game, worst soundtrack, and this isn't even on the meme but did you ever play Heaven's Vault?

Wait I think I got that backwards. WORST game, BEST soundtrack.

Best game with worst soundtrack would've been The Last Guardian, for the record 😂 the year is 2021 and I still have an axe to grind with the blandness of the musical choices in that game.

Worst game. hm. FFXV, I figure. I'm trying to recall if I played some notable clunkers but by now they've faded into oblivion. With long-standing franchises it gets personal, I still remember so much of the no good horrible time I spent with that game.

Best soundtrack... tough call. Chrono Cross? Shadow of the Colossus? I want to say Vane for the hell of it! And always much love to the Uru soundtrack.

Heaven's Vault is the next big game I'm going to play after Paradise Killer! :D I'm currently decompressing from two big WRPGs in a row by playing itty bitty indies in the 5-hours range (Hylics, Leaves, now Roman Sands) but I cannot wait! I'm so glad games in general and this studio in particular are tackling language, there's so much potential for so many approaches! Much hype!

Sekarang mari kita #bedahlirik lagu ketiga dari playlist random sayeu. Mau ngebedah lagunya Payung Teduh, yang ini mungkin tidak sehits Akad. Lagian kayanya se Indonesia mendadak jadi pada suka band indie sejak lagu Akad kali ya. Atau lagu Banda Neira - Sampai Jadi Debu, yang ternyata sering jadi soundtrack FTV. Dulu sekilas nonton di TV waiting room rumah sakit pas PKL haha biasanya telingaku langsung masang telinga terjulur kalau denger lagu yang ga asing. 

Anyway indie itu bukan genre ya, itu cuma masalah label rekaman aja yang mereka urus sendiri. Kalau lagu indie yang sering kudengerin banyaknya genre folk-pop yang nama-nama band ga tau itu apa artinya, kaya Pygmy Marmoset, Figura Renata, MarchoMarche, Soegi Bornean. Jadi aku mau bedah lagu Payung Teduh - Mari Bercerita. Ini lagu unik sih dan punya keUWUan tersendiri, walaupun kayanya pas pertama kali denger ga semua kuping bisa nerima hehe. Langsung ajadeh ya.

Lagu ini nyeritain pasangan yang lagi quality time sambil deep talk gitu. Wajar kali ya kalau lagi ngobrol banyak trus tiba-tiba jadi kepikiran sesuatu, akhirnya ngejeda bentar buat mikir dulu sendiri, entah mikirin jawaban sendiri atau nganalisis jawaban lawan bicara. Aku sering sih gitu, kadang deep talk emang butuh deep thinking. Apalagi kaya waktu itu lagi curhat ke temen tiba-tiba ditanya “Emangnya kamu mau dikenal kaya gimana sih, Al?” wedew aku terdiam ditanya kaya gitu hehe. Thank you anyway for the question!

Nah ini bagian reff nya yang uWu, menurutku. Pertamanya heran sih, emang apa salahnya ngomongin tentang “kita” sama pasangan. Tapi makin tercerahkan baca reviewnya mbak Siti Nur Azizah Fitriani Akbar (duh namanya panjang, aku gatau nama panggilannya :v). Dia bilang kalau banyaknya tuh orang yang lagi pacaran, entah itu suami-istri atau bukan, mereka fokus ke diri mereka doang. Misalnya saling puji gitu ya, “kamu cantik hari ini” “ah masa sih? hari ini doang?!” atau ngayal gitu kali ya “nanti kalau aku jadi presiden kamu jadi ibu negaranya ya”. Ya mungkin seperti itu i can’t relate soalnya, intinya mereka kan lagi kasmaran tuh, jadi berasa dunia milik berdua aja, bodo amat urusan lain mah, yang penting hanya aku dan dirimu di keabadian~

Nah trus kalau ga ngomongin tentang “kita” ngomongin apa dong itu quality time nya? nah jadi couple ini mereka bahasnya hal-hal di luar mereka, malah ngomongin ikan paus (btw paus bukan ikan eh) atau bunga padi haha gemas. tapi mereka puas dengan deep talk nya itu, buktinya mereka ngerasa “lebih bersahaja”. Sebenernya aku gatau sih bersahaja itu gimana ya rasanya, *brb googling dulu. OOOH bersahaja itu sederhana, tidak berlebih-lebihan. Aku ngerasa ini couple bukan tipe yang gampang ngumbar kata-kata sayang, mungkin ada unspoken love dari deep talk mereka.

Aku jadi keinget pas nonton Habibie dan Ainun 3 bareng temen terus kita sepakat “gini kali ya bucinnya orang intelek”. Ngomonginnya Indonesia gitu kan, masa depan bangsa mau dibawa kemana?? atau mungkin bahas SDGs udah berapa persen progresnya buat target 2030? haha mantep banget ini pasangan strategis mungkin emang sama-sama kerja di Bappenas pfft.

Tapi deep talk ga mesti berat gitu juga sih, obrolannya ngalor ngidul dan bisa ngalir aja dari bahas makanan kesukaan sampe climate change dan keduanya ngerasa fulfilled dari obrolan itu. Jangan cuma seorang aja yang puas banyak ngomong tapi satunya capek dengerin pfft. Btw aku suka quote ini nih, mungkin udah pada familiar ya,

Kayanya kalau udah deep talk bisa jadi ngomongin semua itu kali ya, dan obrolannya berprogres jadi makin meaningful. Dari awalnya gibahin orang yang baru nikah, trus ngomentarin wedding partynya, akhirnya jadi ngobrolin rencana nikah mereka (?) happy ending kalau akhirnya ditanya “will you marry me?” wkwk lah ngayal.

Ya ini bagian akhir lagunya, intinya couple ini lagi quality time kan ngomongin paus di laut sama padi di sawah sampe gamau cepet cepet udahan ngobrolnya karena keburu pagi trus lupa tidur. Mungkin ini relate sama suami istri kali ya, lagi pillow talk gitu kan. Asal jangan ditinggal tidur pasangannya, padahal dia lagi asik cerita pfft kasyan.

1. what song calms you down?

100% it's Air Stream from the Uru soundtrack. the Myst games are a huge part of my early childhood and that's the first one i remember playing on my own. i wasn't good at it (they're super fucking hard puzzles) but Air Stream is just.... ough it's PEAK tranquility dude. there are definitely other tracks that i love but i think that one takes the cake

13. what's your comfort food?

i don't really have one? i think? i really like my mom's homemade macaroni and cheese though, that's always welcome. especially when i have steamed broccoli to go with it :))

27. which character would you want to be?

ooh this one's tricky. i like a lot of characters in a lot of things. if i had to pick... i have vanitas on my mind again, and i wouldn't mind being him provided i don't get his canon arc because Ow. other than that i would probably be roxas or ventus (also kingdom hearts) because i think they're Very Cool
