the unwanted guest incoherent ramblings under read more so spoilers below:
did tamsyn muir enter my brain and ask "oh what would drive flora just absolutely insane" and then write that????? i have to WORK today!!!
i was literally just thinking about naberius and how different his relationships to ianthe and corona were. hes socially beneath both of them but ianthe and babs had more of a back and forth compared to the far more unbalanced dynamic between corona and babs.
and naberius' care for rules!!!! i was rereading the duel between gideon and naberius a bit ago and in addition to the obvious part of gideon breaking the rules, theres this tiny moment between naberius and magnus. naberius points out that hed be embarrassed to admit to losing to a fourteen year old, to which magnus makes a joke, gives babs a look, and naberius looks scolded. like for all his bitchy attitude he steps back into line when told to!
im forever gonna be rotating around in my mind the fact that babs was continuously cheated on. what a fascinating character detail. also my favorite line of the whole story was "I ruled him through fear and poison and he relaxed into it like a warm bath." woof.
AAAAAAAAA i am such a paldulcie girl so i dont even have interesting thoughts i just feel insane. i figured out around the third scene that the voice was dulcie and i had to take a lap around my apartment. them!!!! THEM!!!! other people smarter than me can unpack what the bible verse means but at a minimum hes saying shes like an angel. and the fact we never see her? that its this off stage revelation? i really think this story made great use of the stage play format but dulcie being a voice in the audience palamedes is speaking to is just. muah. perfection.
okay soul stuff!!! i had a prediction that this story was going to go into river or soul dynamics because like, its palamedes and ianthe. that sounds like what they would get up to. but im so intrigued by what this is now setting up! this certainly puts any remaining expectations of a true perfect lyctorhood to bed. it also presents a possible answer to why pyrrha was piloting g1deons body, that they had compartmentalized too much but her soul was still trying to graft on.
also have we officially proven abigail correct? that there is in fact something beyond the river? because thats what two shores would mean. one shore is the living crossing into the river, and the other shore crossing onto whatever lies past it. dulcie said she is out of the river, meaning she is at the shore beyond the river.
anyway, i love that ianthe is a liar who lies but also is just unwilling to accept facts that go against her worldview. queen of justification and denial <3

I spent all that time drowning and surfacing in you, over and over and over, and all because in the end you could not bear to do the one thing I asked you to do.
it's interesting how often lyctorhood is described in terms of burning the soul when gideon—who, with harrow, achieved a half-baked form of lyctorhood that preserved her soul, which still granted harrow access to the lyctoral well of power—describes it as drowning and surfacing.
Hot bloody blisters bubbled up from your skin, and you were aware of yourself, not as a structure, but as a sickly radiance: one sickly radiance among other sickly radiances, one, two, three, four, five, all around you, one beneath.
there's obviously too many souls in the river in this scene, five instead of the four it should be, with the extra being beneath harrow. is that gideon? is gideon beneath her because of their unique take on the lyctoral bond, or is that what every lyctorhood is like?
“What happens to your body when you go under, Harrow? When you go into the River?” “The body enters a senseless state. The Lyctor doesn’t perceive anything around them in any sense; even their necromancy fails. Instead, the secondary soul comes to the fore—the protection mechanism—that can wield a sword even if their mind is gone … without conscious thought or awareness of its own, but with a perfect sword-hand.”
where does the secondary soul lie, really? ianthe says “Step three, remove and absorb it: take it into yourself without consuming it in the process” but we know via permeability that you cannot take it into yourself without consuming it, without contamination.
“I saw it! I saw it, and it is blue like Loveday’s eyes! It knows what you did to its kin, and it sees my cavalier’s mortal soul burning in my chest!”
if lyctorhood is dependent on the soul being burnt within, how did harrow derive power from gideon's? tamsyn did say that harrow ate the cheeseburger from the happy meal of gideon's soul, but how could her soul be compartmentalised from harrow as it was, yet still be consumed? where was it
where does the soul lie
what is a soul? we know it arises due to the sufficient thalergetic complexity in a human body, and that a kind of communal soul can arise from the thalergetic complexity of a planet, but it's strange in that the soul is both implied to arise from thalergy but also be necessary to regulate thalergy as we see with anastasia's tripod principle: “The body needs thalergy and a soul to keep the lights on. Anastasia’s tripod principle. Body plus thalergy, but no soul, is basically a very weird vegetable … after a while it gives up and shuts down.”
is the soul a product of thalergy and a regulator of it? which came first, chicken or the egg?

okay this is driving me kind of crazy on this read through of Gideon and I need to know if im just missing something or if this is an actual question: what the fuck were Ianthe and Coronabeth going to do??
It seems like they were going in to Canaan house with the expectation that corona would be found out for not being a necro fairly quickly. when Gideon first hears the third house chatting in the halls, Ianthe points out that the lack of structure is allowing corona to skate by longer without anyone figuring out the secret. my guess would be that they planned to reveal corona as Ianthe's cavalier once she had already become a lyctor, assuming it was too late to back out? but given the circumstances being what they were, the third house kept the ruse going up until the last possible second. even when half of the participants had been murdered and Gideon runs into a manic coronabeth, babs is still adamant that she absolutely cannot reveal herself to be a cavalier. why not? why are the consequences of revealing her lack of necromantic ability that extreme? I would guess this is somehow related to whatever greater goals Ianthe has that coronabeth is involved with, as palamedes refers to in The Unwanted Guest. but whatever that plan is, I think they had it in place before they even left Ida, and just adapted as they learned more information. Also as a side note im interested to know how involved corona and their parents were in the formulation of the plan, and how much was Ianthe.

marc and pecco both as vale’s successor but in different ways…… marc the next prodigy the usurper of the throne the new dominant force in the sport as vale grew older……… pecco the chosen son the one who succeeded where even vale failed (ducati) the first motogp world champion from the academy but still never a prodigy and maybe not even the favorite at the academy despite all his accomplishments……. now direct competitors for the first time ever both wanting to prove themselves, pecco that he can do it again that he can win against marquez on a decent bike, marc that he can still do it that he’s still special and alien and the rider everyone remembers him as…… it’s compelling !! to me.

It has just dawned on me that, with The Unwanted Guest, Ianthe's epithet now makes a whole lot more sense, even if John never met Naberius.

So what do your leaders do all day? In the cannon clans it seems like they just sit around at camp all day and let the deputies do all of the work. Until the plot needs them anyway.
Leaders are given 9 lives for a very important purpose; they are supposed to live as their Clanmates do, understand them, and guide them as shining examples of what a warrior should be.
A leader who's inaccessible is considered a failure. Clans can't do anything about this until ASC and it's rare to begin with, but their clan WILL get upset about it.
Patrolling, sparring, hunting, and even cooking are all things a leader should be doing. Is it still very high-pressure? Yes. Ultimate authority rests on them.
So what's a deputy for?
Busywork. Day-to-day decisions that would prevent a leader from actually engaging with clan life. Setting up patrols, gathering news, settling small disputes, etc.
You could consider them a very authoritative secretary. If a Clan is being TOTALLY run by its deputy, that's a problem. If a Clan is BARELY being run by its deputy, that is also a problem.
So, expect to see cats like Firestar just around more often. It's not shocking to see him return from patrol or a little walk, carrying a mouse or two.

my Thoughts on like, normals character and where he's going btw are highly based on his own flaws and like. idk ive kinda seen both sides (normal is a baby and must be protected versus normal needed this ego blow because he was getting too into his head) and I think it's maybe more nuanced than that? cause the thing is. normal is RIGHT to think that his side of things are the morally correct side. he's the one whose seen what the doodler wants and fears and where it came from, he had more perspective on the quest than any of the other teens and I'm not arguing otherwise because it'd be silly. it's HOW he's going about it that puts him firmly into the, "teen character is going to fuck up because they're a teenager" category: as much as he does genuinely try, he's not good at connecting to other people and he does put himself on this pedestal of "i know better and therefore im the best" that isn't exactly the MOST healthy mindset, as a self-proclaimed leader.
that being said, I absolutely understand where he's coming from in this episode in a very. he is hurting and lashing out kind of way? we know why scary is acting the way she is (her own past with her dad + willy trauma=she's still looking for the trauma that justifies her inner darkness) and we know why link is acting the way he is (he's hurt and scared and he never asked for this and he just wants to ensure that he's not the one actively hurting people, he never forgave himself for the casualties of ep2 and the last thing he wants is to add more) and one of normals flaws is his pride, the way he's so sure of what he's doing, he's the best for this and of COURSE it's the right way, he knows that!!!
but he can't empathize with scary right now. very specifically he cannot empathise with her because he can't trust her. and if he can't trust link he can't empathize with him either. normal does view himself as the reason the team is together, and I think that's why he was suddenly on board with kicking scary out when before he was so deadset on helping her: if he personally can't trust anyone, does he really have a team he can lead?
that being said, the shots taken on him recently have been sooo low in comparison. scary has done nothing but bully normal since they reunited. link has been sassy and snippy with normal even since ep26 and it's only gotten worse. normal and taylor don't really have much of a relationship outside the teen friendship circle in general. hermie is angry at normal- and I kinda agree with will that it should NOT solely be up to the players to remember anthony's fucking npc, as funny as it is. as much as I want normal to listen and understand and empathize with scary and link both, it IS a little frustrating when in comparison normals been fucking tanked at every opportunity by the other players- and link's line to normal after he found out about hero actually made me so upset on normal's behalf like dude.
I'm still on the boat that normal should get and deserves a mild villain arc. I desperately want him to team up with hermie and go to the goofs realm alone. I think it might be good for him- both to have a solo adventure with hermie and to have a solo adventure in general, so he can find out why he loves having friends so much. and I think him going through a villain arc would be so narratively compelling, because again, he's not WRONG about the path they should be taking: it isn't underestimating links personal trauma to admit that normal is actually right and he's just so bad at following through. it's just kinda a little tiring sometimes when normal actually does his best to keep the group together and it doesn't work (looking at episode 27 in particular) or when he tries to bury that oak family generational anger the way sparrow and henry do. let him be angry!!!

ok with the short story title reveal i think the featured duo is ianthe and pal and it's the fight in her head in ntn. pal being the titular unwanted guest in her mind etc. not sure mercy and camilla make sense and anyways as much as i want it i doubt we'd get another short story set basically at the same time as As Yet Unsent. now that i'm thinking about it gideon squared shouldn't be possible because i'm pretty sure by the time gideon was in control of harrow pyrrha had taken over for g1deon?? so no way they could have communicated unless g1deon didn't actually die fighting the rb and he interacted with kiriona in the river or something
teacher and john could still be a possibility cause i think the title is vague enough that it could apply to something during the period canaan house was occupied (and i would kill for a short story set at that time....) but i think it best fits for ianthe and pal which frankly i am ecstatic about as someone who thought we had gotten the last cam or pal we were ever gonna get

what’s the consensus on reading the unwanted guest at the relevant point during ntn for a first read? or is it a better idea to just read ntn first and then the unwanted guest after, as it was published?

Pama and their ouppy

Touch starved child learns how good physical affection is and cries every time it's initiated with their Pama.

Unwanted and Bugbear having Gourmand as a new parent and they absolutely are messes with dealing with their trauma and coming to terms with their abuse and how bad it was.
Unwanted being more on the scale of not understanding why the scugs of the colony are looking at them strange when they tell a story about their iterator. Their punishments. Their isolation. The things that were said.
It took a real long time to just come to terms.
imagining Bugbear and Unwanted being absolute best friends if they ever met. Maybe they could be siblings :D
god, now I just imagine Bugbear's Iterator using their name as a reason why neither scavenger nor slugcat would accept them, "an imaginary being invoked to frighten children, typically a sort of hobgoblin supposed to devour them.", that's why Bugbear needs their Iterator, the world won't be as kind to them as their Iterator is, right?
To Bugbear; Yes, their Iterator snaps at them and lashes out, but that's because they themselves get into trouble, they push their Iterators buttons. So really, it's their own fault, their Iterator doesn't want to hurt them. That's the case right?
Bugbear took a long time getting used to being treated well by Gourmand's Colony, especially after being run out of so many Scavenger Packs and Slugcat Colonies for one reason or another. The process of trying to heal and grow from their past will take a while, but they'll manage.
I did originally want Bugbear's Iterator to have made past Scavslugs in a quest for control in their life, but I'm not very sure of it anymore. Though, Bugbear and Unwanted could 100% be best buds if they ever happened to be in the same universe!

I dreamed of a prequel Ace Attorney game that explored how the in universe justice and prison system got to be so extreme. It went through the decades up until DL-6 and the Fey- Hawthorne family drama. It explored concepts such as prison abolition, secularism, subjective morality, and abstract concepts such as karma. It had a shifting cast and pov with recurring characters being Gregory, Gant, Blaise, and Manfred ( who looked like Cleminnit for some reason). Manfred’s (platonic) wife was also in it and was absolutely unhinged, she was this revolutionary breaking rules and laws left and right. Also she had thick fluff under her armpits ( just telling for documentation purposes promise) There were these flashes to future events and I’m not sure if it was just for player or what. Faintly I remember Manfred mentioning Gregory would follow him ‘ into the depths of hell’ and him being confused why ‘ people wouldn’t celebrate his endless torment.’ But more importantly Manfred did drop a “ you give me incessant, unneeded feelings” to Gregory. Damn my brain for being cooler than reality!
