I'm finally cleaning out my drafts! My oldest ones were from 2014. Lots of dead links (RIP), some pre-ban porn that can't be reblogged, and a bunch of S8/9 SPN gifsets before I took a tumblr break for a few years when real life got messy.

This is the first time my drafts have been under 4-5k in at least a year, if not longer :) Feels good!

I'm going to keep going until I can't (if there's a queue limit, I'm going to find it).

Forgot to mention it but the other day I dreamed of an episode of supernatural where Dean and Sam and Bela(?) were like. Trying to escape a sieged house. And the cops got Sam I think but Dean and Bela escaped (she helped him disguise himself as a cop I think? And then they hid in another house and escaped from there) and afterwards they showed a little coded message exchange and there were like 4 or 5 messages but the only thing I remember from it is one of them said something like "coffee asexual" and I was like wow big win for the ace gang on tumblr. And then the dream changed to something else

Properly remembering why I lost interest in the show. That last fight between demon!Dean and Sam was a fight I could have described in detail, despite never having actually watched it before.

Oh no! Something's Wrong With Dean and now he's going to say hurtful things to Sam. What's the horrible conflict? You're weak and useless and you're the reason mom died.

It's the exact same fight they've been having since season 1. And when Something's Wrong With Sam, it's the same thing in reverse - Dean never lets Sam have his freedom, Dean's a self righteous hypocrite, Dean fucks everything up and gets people killed, etc.

It doesn't bother me so much now, but I can see how that would have been irritating after watching the show for 5 years straight. Getting excited for new seasons, seeing the crazy new shit the boys get into, but rehashing the exact same emotional beats year after year.

I kind of get it from a realism perspective - these are lifelong insecurities and irritations the boys have. It just gets really dull for a story where you want to see the characters you love grow and change from their experiences, in positive ways as well as the negative ones.

Also the Something's Wrong With X plot got soo played out imo. They relied on it too heavily for tension building and conflict that it started to feel really manufactured. I wanted to see more genuine internal conflicts and tensions between the characters outside of random cosmic misfortune forcing it.

#this on top of the continual axing of the characters i actually enjoyed just made it a chore to keep watching #i got excited for demon!dean and watched the first few episodes of s10 when it aired #but started skipping episodes because i didn't feel like watching the conflict between him and sam #like i think i vaguely watched episodes 1 & 2 then tuned in for fan fiction (because how could i miss that?!) #and never watched a single episode again until last night #which is fucking WILD because supernatural literally owned my life for 5 straight years #spn #not hate or anything - i am enjoying it quite a bit now #just some observations on the storytelling and character work #spn s10

okay so. when i was reading the 2005 supernatural forums there was a bit of talk about phone numbers and voicemails that i didn't really pay attention to until this morning when i found something more

right after 'phantom traveler' ended, people started talking about dean's phone number that john gave in his voicemail

but i watched that moment and went, where are they getting this completely different number from? on bluray john gives the number as 785-555-0179

and then i see this

so at some point, the producers went back and overdubbed the number john gives with a different number, but the people who were watching it live heard 866-907-3235. and they called it. and this is the voicemail they got (youtube recording of it)

so, the first time dean's phone is given out on the show, the viewers are prompted to call it and get a voicemail. 11-2-83 is the night mary died.

the next time dean's phone is said on the show, in 'home', they're also prompted to call it.

and they find out that the voicemail changed

since dean gives out john's full email address in this voicemail, people start writing it too. and the day before 'asylum' airs, they get a reply

so now they have a day's head start on figuring out what this connects to. and this person gets it

dean does, in fact, get a similar message as them in 'asylum'

i don't know, seeing people this engaged with the show from the very beginning is just cool

before the season 2 premiere they got one more e-mail, this time jo's

if you wrote her, she would write back "Do I know you? Aren't you a friend of Ash?"

according to the spn wiki, this message was automated up until s05e10 'abandon all hope', after which the e-mail no longer responded. :(

Ah man, when the airplane man in Phantom Traveller quips that having Sam there instead of John is an “even trade”, Sam’s “No, not by a long shot” sounds genuinely sincere (albeit not happy about it). And practically it makes sense—of the family he's the youngest, least experienced, was older when he started hunting than Dean was, and he’s been out of the game for a while. But if there have been signs of him being insecure in the earlier episodes I missed them, and with all anger and derision of their Dad, I hadn’t really considered the extent to which he might nevertheless feel overshaddowed by him, and might still buy into John’s myth of himself as a great hunter. 

It also makes me wonder how much of his ‘can’t we just leave???’ attitude in earlier episodes isn’t just driven by obsession, but also by him being scared and overwhelmed. Especially in light of what he says at the beginning of the episode about how much it’s all getting to him, perhaps he wants to find their Dad as soon as possible not just to get revenge (and sooth his worry for their Dad), but also to get all of this over with and spent as little time as possible in the terror and violence of this world. And he should be able to!! Even if hunting was as ethically simple as Dean presents it (kill bad things, save good people) no one should be forced into something like this!! Maybe Sammy would have hated normal life and come back to hunting in the long run, but that should have been his choice to make!!

i have such strong memories related to black sails like. it was my mom's birthday. during a weekend. think 2018/2019. we went away for the weekend to this. place. idk what its called in english but yk rent a tiny house for like a few days. whatever. i can remember what it looked like. i sat on that couch watching black sails. my sister and i had to share a room and i managed to break the bed (not permanently) i had to sleep on & because even after fixing it i didnt trust it, i slept on the floor. it was on that floor that i watched s2 of black sails. it was on that floor that i saw that fucking scene that fundamentally changed me as a person. because. listen. black sails was one of the first shows id watched with a queer story. with not one but two major plot threads revolving around queer people's relationships. i remember sitting in the car in the dark as the rest of my family was ordering fries for us and i remember my mom going "hey look gay couple!" in a restaurant. it doesnt feel real. that entire weekend is a fever dream. i thought i was just watching a pirate show. the pirates were gay. the pirates were fucking gay bro. i cried over that show. i wept at the end of it. i had to play boardgames for my mom's birthday and pretend like i wasnt going insane because the pirates were gay and i was just. ough. i was 14 or 15 and i was barely out and i was new to being queer in any capacity and it was such an experience.

Basically on nov 5th 2020 supernatural aired the 18th episode of its 15th season with only two more episodes to go. After twelve years of feverish shipping wars the angel of the lord castiel finally confessed his love to dean winchester and then was promptly sent to some sort of oily angel cemetery for the crime of loving him. This awoke thousands of superwholock sleeper agents from their slumber and caused destiel to twitter trend above the american presidential election and rumours of putin stepping down in the middle of a worldwide pandemic. It was the start of an increasingly ridiculous series of events which we must celebrate every year by posting the faces of misha collins and jensen ackles until at least one person blocks us

Beggars Would Ride by Tiamatv (Explicit, 118k)

You had me at Aladdin AU. When Dean Winchester is caught stealing, he's given one chance for freedom. Go into the Cave of Wonders, grab the amulet, and get out. Things don't go as planned. Now he's got a moody ancient genie to contend with. But maybe he can use up two of his wishes and then grant the genie his wish: to be free. What could go wrong?

This fic is an absolutely delight. I laughed so hard, especially at the fun ways Tiamatv played with the SPN canon and the Disney movies. But beyond the humor is some really fantastic world building and a beautiful story about finding your way when you feel trapped by life.

Genie Cas is very cute and grumpy and sassy, and it's fun to watch him start to care. And Dean has so much heart it will make you ache. Sam and Jess are disgustingly cute but both are also whip smart and fun. And Jo (Jess’ sister in this) is the knife girl of my dreams.

This one is hard to put down.

Tourbillon Dreams by kayliemalinza @kayliemalinza (Mature, 40k)

Dean uses Bobby's life insurance proceeds to buy a hoarders house stuffed to the brim with cursed and haunted objects. But when he finds a clock that also happens to be an angel, things take an unexpected turn.

It sounds cracky and there is some delightful humor, but this fic packs a beautiful emotional punch. Dean is in his peak caretaking, competency mode and Clockstiel is adorable and entranced with Dean in a way that is just immensely readable.

There is something starkly gorgeous about the way Dean and Cas are physically so different and yet they find each other in meaningful and beautiful ways.

Love Is a Meat Loaf Song by followyourenergy @followyourenergy (Explicit, 68k)

A reimagining of canon where Dean is never saved and becomes a demon. He's bored waiting for the apocalypse when he happens upon a certain blue eyed seraph and they decide to work together.

This fic has all the delightful sassiness you expect of Demon!Dean and especially when he spends time with his frenemy, Meg. It also has just absolutely amazing angel lore and a deep dive into Cas and his trauma. All of this is wrapped up in a soft love story about two beings finding each other and seeing each other and breaking down each other's walls.

It's the entire package of funny, sincere and romantic.

Where there is Darkness by quiettewandering @wanderingcas (Explicit, 91k)

I may have popped this on at some point when it was a WIP but I have to renew my recommendation if so. Dean and Sam are lighthouse keepers, but Dean keeps driving off the third member of their team until Cas shows up. But will they be able to overcome their past to carve out happiness?

This Dean and Cas are so delicious. I am deeply fond of them both. They are fighting against so much baggage and yet they find in each other something so special. Sammy is also perfectly oblivious in the best way. It's hard to explain what makes this fic special except that it is so engrossing, you will be slamming next chapter

Valley of God by ValleyDean @valleydean (Mature, 145k)

I know. I KNOW. The MCD tag is daunting in a fic like this but I promise that while it is accurate, then ending is softer than you think and it's really the way it should end.

So there are a few things about this fic that make it absolutely delicious. First, it really delves into Cas’ trauma in a really gorgeous way. We don’t have enough fics that look at his angel trauma (we can't for me tbh) and this one uses a religious cult situation to delve into it. Second, Dean and Cas in this fic are just so messy and delightful. Dean wants to believe that Cas is good so badly. Cas wants to protect Dean the same way. It's crunchy. Finally, the atmosphere is amazing. It's creepy. It gets under your skin.

Is it dark? Absolutely. But it's also amazing.

The Darkest Sunshine by StarlightOfFandoms @starlightoffandoms (Explicit, 35k)

If murder husbands is your thing, this one is a delight of a fic. Dean Winchester is the Righteous Man serial killer, a notorious murderer who goes after monsters (in human form). People who are guilty of abhorrent crimes. But when he goes after Cas, a professor believed to have murdered several students, he discovers an innocent man being framed. Together with Cas and his team, Dean decides to find the real killer. He just has to pretend to be Cas’ boyfriend until they succeed.

The fake dating trope in a murder husbands fic was a total delight. So was the fact that Dean doesn't work alone and has a full support system to go after the worst of the worst. It's an intriguing concept done really well. Dean in this fic is an interesting blend of sociopathic tendencies, a strong sense of justice, and a willingness to do anything for those he is loyal to. Cas is intrigued by Dean and accepts him as he is. It's a really great combination.

A Weed In Any Other Place by VioletHaze @scones-and-texting-and-murder (Explicit, 63k)

On the other end of the spectrum is this fluffy rom com. There is some angst, but most of it is soft, sweet falling in love along with supportive friends and family.

Cas is a writer. Well, Cas had a book published and now he's desperately trying to write his second while convincing himself the first was probably just a fluke. Writers block is a bitch. That is until his car breaks down and he ends up at a little shop called Winchester and Son. By some weird trick of fate, it's exactly what he needs. He has the most productive day in years sitting in their waiting room. So he comes back, and keeps coming back. The extremely cute mechanic with green eyes doesn't hurt.

Cas is a disaster at social situations in a relatable way. Dean is struggling to put away some bad lessons from his dad so that he can find what he wants instead of what his father pushed on him. Both have a lovely support system. Charlie, in particular, makes me deeply fond in this fic.

My lovely Tumblr wife is back at it, writing the most delightfully chaotic fic based on Misha's prompt awhile back for President Cas and Fast Food Janitorial Staff Dean Winchester. It's a Cinderella story and in equal parts hilarious and adorable. Also it is a Dean-saster/Cas-tastrophe pairing which is always fun plus there's a 2 person love triangle situation.

Dean's stuck in a miserable job with his only escape being his love of How I Met Your Mother and the Tumblr blog he devotes to the fandom. But when a handsome man walks in one night after hours, things heat up. Too bad the man in question is actually the President.

It's a romp and a love letter to fandom.
