Tobey's angst attracts me, and I enjoy it even more when Becky is not the only one who comforts him (STILL TOBECKY FOR LIFE). Let the kid has other friends.
So yeah, this is based off this one scene with them in the background and wanting a fluffy scene with them for some reason because of headcanons and need for platonic relationships between men and women. Men and women can hug without any romantic feelings.
Tumblr media
This is how it feels like being Theodore McCallister the Third.
You know that you do wrong. You hate what you do deep down. You hate that you just can't fit in.
You want to be friends with Becky Botsford. You want to be friends with people, but your ego, your insecurities, get in the way every time.
You want to be friends with everyone, but you just can't control yourself. You can't control how you are as a person.
You try your hardest.
You try so much.
At Katy's birthday party, that is when the cracks begin to show. When you broke that girl down to tears. She's friendly to you now, but you can't tell why.
It has been reinforced when you realize how untrustworthy you are as a person. When the librarian herself didn't believe you when you claim you didn't lose a book. It hurts. It all hurts so bad. At the time, you give off the impression of being unmoved and collected, but now...
Now, when reflecting among those events, you realize how right Becky was. Night after night, you feel the events of everything catching up with you. You garnered distrust from people with your actions.
Victoria Best? You relate to her so much because her parents are like how your friend was. He was worse. He viewed you as garbage, as a mistake. He called you that once. Ripped you away from the childish innocence of the world and brought down to face reality.
'You were a mistake. You were never meant to be born. You are trash.'
Your mother pull you away and went on a tangent on him. That has been the last time you saw him.
No one cares about you.
And you haven't helped it.
You... are dark.
Too dark.
That is why your father left you.
You and your mother.
Your mother will leave you eventually. You know she tries. She always tried to force you into clubs and meet people, but you throw that in her face. You hate that too.
Middle school...
Well, things are softening up... somewhat.
But you feel it.
The cracks... even more...
How did you ever end up with Rose and Victoria as friends? That is a question that you still ask. Will you lose them as well?
Surprisingly, you agree with spending time with them because it's easier. Rose's compassion and Victoria's joking nature makes it easier. Everyone else laughs at you. Everyone else treats you wrong. Not those two, surprisingly. Becky kind of warm up to you, but you know you started it all. Even if Becky and WordGirl are one of the same, that makes it worse.
You know your actions have been unforgivable. Trapping a living and breathing individual into a robot and forcing her to do horrible things. Threaten to destroy another's house two times. Cheat on a stupid election that ruined another event for her even though neither of you were selected.
One day, it comes undone.
One day, you can't hold back anymore.
People hate you. All of them. You realize it in Art class where you have to break off into groups. Where even people will work with comic book nerds than you. When you trips over a banana pill into a locker and everyone laughs. It stings.
You just... it never bothers you before. But why did it now? When Rose and Victoria push through the crowd, the latter grabbing her flute, a nonverbal threat to use it, when the former picks you up and leads you away from the laughs, from them all.
It has been the end of the day so you are led out. You fall against a nearby tree, as if bricks have unleashed on you, as if stress of it all, the hurtful words, the laughs, the mocks, all of them. Something wet is in your eyes, and you hate it because you are Theodore McCallister The Third. Crying is a weakness.
And of course they notice. They are your only friends. Becky is a frienemy if anything else. While she isn't exactly mean to you, there seems to be an even bigger wall thrown up. She doesn't joke nearly as much as she used to. You know you deserve contempt, that you aren't a victim, but still...
Will you do the same with Rose and Victoria because you're chasing dreams? You realize you need them. You need their friendship. You need Rose's chipper attitude and Victoria's competitive nature. Humans need other humans a lot of times, and you are just another among the spectrum.
But if you hurt them, if you mess everything up like you possibly did with Becky, with WordGirl, if you continue throwing fits, you can lose them too. And you don't want to lose them.
"Tobey, what's wrong?" the former asks while the latter appears concern, even though she wouldn't admit it.
"Why are you here?" You ask. "Everyone hates me." You whimper, but at that moment you couldn't care because it's been all painful and agonizing. You know that you'll push them away... eventually with your own actions.
Both look shocked. Even Victoria. The girl has never been a supervillain. At least not to the core. Just crappy parents. He knows that.
"We don't hate you," Rose speaks softly, and damn it all she knows exactly what to say. She calls you out when necessary but she knows how to be convincing. "You're a good person, Tobey. You deserve friends and support. Don't listen to those jerks."
"I don't know," you grumble. You aren't usually so emotional because crying wastes water, and no one in this city cares about a few waste soil. No one in the world as well. "I push everyone away."
"That's obviously not the case. Don't let them get to you." She pushed. "True friends wouldn't abandon someone for some imperfections. You aren't perfect, but nobody is."
You sigh. "I wish I can be better."
"You have to get there first. You are growing. Things are changing. Everyone changes with time. Just make the choice to change." he responds.
"You're alright. You're going to be okay." she pushes.
Victoria's snide nature falls away. Well, with a twist. "Yeah, I mean you're not the best like me, but you're still good enough to be around."
You snort. "Geez, thanks."
Rose rolls her eyes while Victoria looks entirely casual. "But yeah, we don't hate you, Tobey, we never will. I promise."
You straighten because you have already lost so much, and you wouldn't lose them no matter what. You care about them. Sisters you never had type of manners. Rose's capabilities in seeing through imperfections and Victoria's own struggles which matches your own.
You grip Rose's hand, and is surprised when Victoria's own grip your shoulder. And they pull you into a hug and you accept after the initial shock wears off. A hug that promise to be there for everything. A hug that promises unity and companionship. You haven't hugged other people besides your mother a few times, and creeping on WordGirl that one Valentine.
And you realize that having a few friends is alright.
Maybe...
Maybe this can be the new normal.

BL Metamorphosis, Volume 3 by Kaori Tsurutani
The story of a friendship between a teenage girl, Urara, and an elderly lady, Ichinoi, as they bond over Boys Love manga.
I was really excited for volume 3 after volume 2 ended with a few subplots to be developed, unfortunately almost nothing happens in volume 3. Now the series was never plot-driven, each volume is half the size of a regular manga book and the story style itself is understated, even so it feels like very, very little happens in this volume. In fact I’m going to have to reread it to see if there’s anything to discuss… brb
(Warning: Spoilers… kind of?)
The volume opens up with Ichinoi getting out of the house to go buy the latest volume of the manga she and Urara read, it’s a good example of how personal interests and hobbies can be a great way to get people out of the house, not only someone of Ichinoi’s age but also younger people.
Urara invite Ichinoi to go to the Winter Comi, the doujinshi market at the end of the year, but after seeing Ichinoi having back pain Urara starts to doubt whether Ichinoi would be able to attend. Whilst with her father, an elderly English couple asks Urara’s father for directions, he understands English but directs them to a police box instead because that is more efficient for both of them. This makes an impression on Urara and she decides to do more research about the Winter Comi, how many people will attend, how far it is, she even does the route herself in order to figure out whether it will be too much for Ichinoi to cope with. In the end she cancels the Winter Comi plans with Ichinoi. I like this bit of storytelling, it conveys a simple narrative in a profound way, although the story itself made me sad…
The next few chapters are subtle things about the passing of time in a person’s lifespan, but really there’s nothing much to describe. The only other significant scene is towards the end, Urara visits Ichinoi and sees that she is packing up and getting rid of a lot of things, Ichinoi even give Urara some fancy plates. Ichinoi says she saw a tv program on decluttering and decided to sort out the house but Urara spots a brochure about Buddhist Memorial Services and suspects Ichinoi may be sort out her things in preparation for the end of her life. That experience propels Urara to call her friend Tsumu and hang out with him.
At the end Urara invites Ichinoi to another doujinshi sale in May, but this time as a seller, and I go “WHAT!?”, Urara is going to produce a manga to sell… but the art we’ve seen from her so far is so amateurish, it’s perfectly normal for someone just learning to draw but how is she going to improve her drawing technique, then draw a full proper manga then produce the manga in 5 months?
Even through this volume was disappointing I still want to keep read and buying the series, I’ve just done some research and I’m sad to discover that volume 5 is the last one, I would have happily accompanied the story further but perhaps it mimics that reality of Urara and Ichinoi friendship: because of Ichinoi’s age it was always going to be a short but significant friendship. Attention; I don’t know if Ichinoi dies by the end of the series! But looking back at this volume, at the how Ichinoi is dividing up her possessions amongst friends, in preparation for the future… that seems to be where things are heading…

Ollie & Spuds - Chapter 2
This is Chapter 2 of Ollie & Spuds - a novella by Carolyn Cott about two animals (both abandoned) who join forces.
A Well-Shod Foot The cat’s name is Spuds. The old man who’d found her thought she looked like the color of Yellow Finn potatoes. He’d pulled the mewing, trembling kitten out from under a bramble on a roadside. He stroked her fur with work-rough hands, looked into her gold-green eyes, and took her home. Spuds had a good life with the old man: She curled up on the rug by the wood stove in winter,…

Gotta say, I've been out as a lesbian for 3 years and nonbinary for a year and a half. And I've noticed something.
Just because someone *always* gets your name and pronous correct, and angrily calls out anyone who forgets, doesn't necessarily mean they support you.
Conversely, just because someone struggles to remember your name and pronouns, or can't wrap their head around gender neutral/neo pronouns at all, doesn't necessarily mean they DON'T support you.
This is applicable to any situation really not just queer shit. Watch what people do, not just what they say, and you will find your friends. Someone might shower you with compliments and have common interests with you, but what happens when you tell them no? Do they get angry when they are corrected? Do they have kind things to say about other people?
My colleagues wouldn't know a gender-neutral pronoun if one hit them in the face with a dictionary, but they make sure I've had a lunch break and get home safely. They have my back if I have a difficult patient. They defend me against other staff members who like to create drama and bitch about people as if they're still in the school playground. If someone has something to say about me being a big ol' queer, they make it known that discrimination has no place in our unit.
My best friend in the whole entire world forgets my name and pronouns every day. When the organisers of her therapy group changed "men and women" to "people" and "he/she" to "they" in order to be more inclusive, there was outcry. Everything from the "it just doesn't sound right" grammar-policing nonsense to the "f*cking special snowflakes are offended by everything". She came down on them like a ton of bricks. She said if the organisers hadn't told them that it was changing, that they wouldn't have noticed. She told them they obviously haven't loved someone outside of the gender binary and they were missing out. She then told them how she had seen me grow and develop since I came out, and how in awe she was of the person I had become. No, she doesn't understand it at all, but why should that mean that she can't be there for me and appreciate how happy I am to be able to be me? Why should that mean, because you lot don't understand it, that someone with the same issues as the rest of the therapy group feels unsafe and unwelcome and doesn't get their issues resolved? As a result, a few of them changed their minds, INCLUDING HER OWN FATHER, and the rest at least shut the hell up about it.
ON THE FLIP SIDE...
A queer person who used my correct name and pronouns delighted in making me walk on eggshells, inventing reasons to be angry with me, convinced me I was a terrible person and even went as far as to try and turn me against my own therapist. They tried to tell me that my therapist only said I was a good person because she was paid to, and that because they themselves had a psychology degree that they could tell I had all these complexes and needed to work hard to be a good person, and it was unlikely I'd never get there. (I chose to listen to my therapist and stop being friends with this person).
A queer person who used my correct name and pronouns continued to do things that made me uncomfortable when I asked them to stop. Never said in as many words "you're not allowed to hang out with your friends" but conveniently had an emergency every time I had plans, and accused me of being uncaring if I needed my own space. They knew I had difficulty asking for help, but still got angry with me when I asked because I didn't ask "soon enough".
A queer person who used my correct name and pronouns told me they would look after me and they didnt. .
A queer person threatened to misgender me MORE when I corrected them.
I'm just saying, that if you choose to yeet everyone who doesn't get your name and pronouns right... that doesn't necessarily make you safe. We live in a very binary world. As much as we want that to change, it won't if we ignore or shout at the bits we don't like. (Believe me, I've tried).

With the Vees being set up as the main threat next season, one thing I'm really hoping we get to see is Alastor and Angel Dust finding some common ground in regards to Vox and Valentino.
Like, Alastor is stated to think of Angel Dust as pitiful, and Angel Dust sees Alastor as a 'big, creepy mystery.' I'm hoping that when the Vees start directly targeting the hotel, Alastor comes to recognize that although Angel Dust doesn't have raw power, he does possess his own sort of strength that's worthy of respect. And it would be interesting if Angel Dust saw parallels in Vox's behavior towards Alastor and Valentino's behavior towards him. Wondering why all of the power in the world doesn't make someone immune to being targeted by people like the Vees.
I don't see Alastor charging V tower and breaking Angel Dust's contract in an act of heroism, but I can see him encouraging Angel Dust attempting to break his own contract, and even pointing him in the right direction. I'd also hope that Angel Dust's influence on Alastor (that he tries to pretend isn't there) plants the seeds of Alastor someday (some day in the far, far, far, far, faaaaar distant future) releasing Husk from his contract.
Also I like the mental image of Angel Dust teaching Alastor suggestive things he can say to cause Vox to blue screen instantly. That, and Valentino actually storming over to the hotel to get at Angel, only to be stopped at the door by Alastor. Towering over Alastor trying to intimidate him, only to back off when Alastor flashes the nightmare face.

...Something's kinda hitting me, guys. I think something just clicked.
So we all know that BB!DOTC is the arc I'm not staying faithful to, right? A lot of characters are getting total overhauls? I'd actually been dancing pretty heavily around the pro-colonialism themes in the original text, simply because I don't really feel comfortable handling them (same with certain sexual themes, it's not great for my mental health to force myself to engage with certain elements that are triggering)
So I'd made it so there was Park Cats (Wind Coalition and River Kingdom) who arrived relatively recently, and Tribe Cats (Sky's Clan, Shadow's Clan) who nestle into an unclaimed spot in the forest. All groups roughly equal in power until Thunder's Clan which was existing in defiance.
But Clanmew isn't JUST comprised of Parkmew and Tribemew-- there's a third contributor. Old Townmew, which mixes with Parkmew and forms Middle Townmew, mixing again with Clanmew to create Modern Townmew.
Since I'm now really thinking about the colonialism themes, especially in my re-read where it starts reaching its narrative conclusion in Books 5 and 6... I think I need to add that 3rd cultural group. I need to make them a player. I think I'm doing a serious disservice by only having the Park Cats, Tribe Cats, and then saying all others mostly lived in the town.
I'm gonna do a BB!Brokenstar with Slash. Previously I'd just cut him completely-- but I think I should, instead, walk him back from being "Pure Evil" like he is in-canon and make him into a real character.
One Eye's a god drawn to the festering stink and rot of the First Battle; Slash is a mortal, leading a group like any other in the Forest Territories.
I think I'm also going to significantly bump up the time the Park Cats have been in this territory. Slash and his cats have been fighting them for years, and until the Mountain Cat influx, were basically spread through most of the Forest.

JKR. Ma'am. If you didn't want me to ship drarry why did you write all these darry & jily parallels?
This is almost verbatim what Draco says to Harry in their first meeting.
"Well, no one really knows until they get there, do they, but I know I’ll be in Slytherin, all our family have been — imagine being in Hufflepuff, I think I’d leave, wouldn’t you?”
These parallels are absolutely intentional. (Tho presumably the point was to show that James was a bully. But JKR really didn't think thru these implications.) And then on the train just as Draco bullying Ron confirmed Harry's dislike of him, James bullying Snape confirms Lily's dislike.
Of course I would argue that James has a much greater penchant for cruelty and violence that Draco does and while he never became a Death Eater as a bully he was worse.
Also why tf does JKR think James is redeemable but Draco isn't even tho Draco canonically regretted his behavior and there's no direct evidence that James did?
