You’re well fed, have a roof over your head, surrounded by amazing friends and family, yet your mind still creates dysfunction with the present moment. This is nothing to be ashamed of. This is the human condition. It’s amazing how our mind can find discomfort, despite being in a situation our brain should deem as safe and comfortable. Just like yin and yang, you cannot have comfort without discomfort. Breath-holding forces you to face your mind head on. The whirlwind of thoughts, the negativity. Where does your mind go when you feel discomfort? Where can you take your mind to relieve it? I always tell my students, “It’s not if you’re going to experience negative thoughts, it’s how long you hold onto them…what you do with them that affects your performance.” Although freediving seems like a niche sport, I firmly believe it’s skills transcend into every day life by help you discover comfort amongst discomfort. . ..
