File attribution theory

In Undertale, there are 10 numbered SAVE files, going from “file 0″ up to “file 9″.

The UNDERTALE folder on the player’s computer may contain file 0, file 9 and file 8 depending on certain conditions.

These files mutually take each other into consideration. The fact that “file 6″ exists means that there was a “file 5″ already, otherwise file 6 would have just been called file 5. File 5 implies the existence of file 4 and so on.

This means that either all of those files are canon, or none of them are.

The game makes it pretty clear that we are in the first scenario given that the Flowey X fight directly refers to those files being an in-world thing.

Another case in which we can clearly see the impact of the different files within the game has to do with Frisk.

Lets say that a neutral route is played, then, the player SAVES just before fighting Asgore. Afterwards, instead of fighting the king, the player decides to RESET. The player then decides to go through the ruins without SAVING even once, but is eventually killed by a monster.

Where does Frisk come back to after dying in this situation ?

One would expect Frisk to either go back to the flower bed at the very beginning or to LOAD back to near Asgore where the player last SAVED.

But neither of those is what happens. Frisk actually comes back to this location :

And that’s not all. Lets say that now, the player closes the game and opens it up again. Where does Frisk LOAD to then ?

This time, they do LOAD back to near Asgore.

Frisk has just LOADED to two completely different points in space and time without having SAVED in between the two. This should be impossible with Frisk having control over only a singular SAVE file.

What happened here was that two different SAVE files were actually used :

“file 0″ and “file 9″.

The first question that asks itself is a pretty straightforward one : What are those SAVE files ?

As the term “SAVE” file implies, any character who at any point inhabits a body that has enough determination to see or manifest SAVE points (and thus to use the SAVE power) has a numbered file attributed to them.

That character will be refered to as the “owner” of the file.

In the case of bodysharing however (such as when a soul is absorbed), the one that actually has control over the SAVE file is not necessarily the same person as its owner.

That person will be refered to as the “controller” of the file.

For a concrete example : Flowey is not the owner of file 3, but as he absorbed the six humans souls, he became this file’s controller and is the one using it in a neutral route.

Those files have been sorted in a specific order. One that is simple and instinctive :

Its in chronological order. The order in which the owners of the respective files first got into the underground.

By examining what exactly each files does within the gameplay, in the code, and in the files, its possible to attribute all of those files to a specific character within the game : their owner.

Let’s start by what is likely the simplest one.

File 8

File 8 can only be seen in a concrete way in one place : The UNDERTALE folder.

However, file 8 originally isn’t present in this folder at first. This file only appears at the exact frame where Flowey absorbs the six human souls, and thus gains back the power to SAVE. One single frame before the game crashes.

File 8 is the second to last file and thus belongs to the second to last determined being to have set foot (or vines here) in the underground.

Flowey is indeed the one using this file in a neutral route.

In fact, we get to see something very interesting once we relaunch the game afterwards.

Now, it is impossible to have a LV superior to 20, which means Flowey likely edited what we see of his own stats to make the whole thing seem more creepy.

However, seeing this file clearly labeled as being that of “Flowey” and the location being set as “My World” (With “My” being refering to Flowey) makes it pretty clear that this is an edited representation of Flowey’s own file. Which he has indeed just gotten to use again after obtaining the souls and creating “His world”.

The owner of file 8 is Flowey. It is the file that he used back when he could still SAVE before Frisk’s fall.

File 9

Following the same pattern, the owner of file 9 is the last determined entity to have been in the underground chronologically and the one that came after Flowey.

This is the file that LOADS whenever Frisk dies. It is the one responsible for Frisk going back to the room below the candy bowl room in the Ruins earlier.

File 9 is also one that gets SAVED on without player input on a number of occasions, gameplay wise it acts similarly to how an autosave would.

The file first appears either when Frisk uses a SAVE point or when reaching certain particular points in the game. (There is debate on the canonicity of those autosaves, i won’t be getting into details for now but it’ll be addressed in a future post.)

The owner of this file also shares their stats with the owner of file 0. (See later)

This file is Frisk’s own file.

File 0

The owner of file 0 is the first being with high determination to have ever fallen into the underground, before the latter two file owners or the six fallen humans, who were also SAVE holders.

This file is inactive until it is used by the player. The file is initially EMPTY until we first make use of it.

It also doesn’t appear in the UNDERTALE folder until its been used to SAVE.

This means that despite belonging to someone from a long time ago, it was only just now awakened and made use of when the game began.

(Note : To say it in different words, the determination used by their own file wasn’t theirs but ours.)

Despite it not being Frisk’s own file, this file is still associated with the stats of Frisk’s body on several occasions.

The stats that show up here are clearly that of Frisk’s body. However, those stats are associated with file 0 and not file 9 when the player LOADS a SAVE manually. On that regard, the two files are pretty much interchangeable.

This is something we can also see whenever SAVING. The file displayed here is file 0, yet the LV, the time shown and the location set here are all that of Frisk. Not anyone else. This contrasts with Flowey’s case from earlier.

Same also applies to the in battle HP bar.

Both owners share common stats. Frisk’s stats.

Frisk is also described as being filled with determination when SAVING it, it is SAVED with Frisk’s DT and Frisk can indeed control this file. (Note : Its possible to SAVE file 9 without SAVING file 0 but not the other way around, file 0 is Frisk’s “extra” file out of the two they have).

Frisk isn’t this file’s owner, but they are however its controller. This also means that this file’s owner must share a body with Frisk.

In addition, once this file is used at least once, we get to see it labeled with a certain name :

The name that file 0 is labeled by is... Whatever name the player gave to Chara at the beginning of the game.

That file’s owner is the first fallen human.

File 1-6

Unlike the three other files that were already brought up, those files do not appear in the UNDERTALE folder. Not even during the in-game sequences where the files are explicitly stated by the game to be in use.

File 2, 3 and 6 are the ones we see Flowey actually using in the neutral route fight, however he had control over all of them in this sequence. In fact, there is unused code in which we see Flowey was intended to use file 4 too.

The fact that Flowey has gained control over files that are not his leads to a single conclusion : The owners of those files are now inhabiting Flowey’s body at the end of a neutral route.

Moreover, Flowey was created as a vessel to be able to wield the souls. In Asriel’s fight, all the souls within him, whilst they still exist individually, have become a part of “Asriel’s soul”.

This might be as reason as to why despite canonically being used during those moments, we don’t see them in the UNDERTALE folder, but we do get to see Flowey’s own file in it.

Regardless, the owners of those six files that Flowey takes control of during a neutral route and that came before him chronologically but after Chara isn’t much of a mystery, especially considering that we know that the six fallen humans could see SAVE points via some dialogues from Asgore and Toriel.

They are the owners of files 1-6.

File 7

File 7 is the outlier of the bunch. Unlike all the other files which we can all see one way or another, file 7 is completely absent from the game’s code. However, we do know that there is a file 7 owner as otherwise, file 8 would have simply been called file 7 and file 9 would have been file 8.

There is only limited information on file 7 that can be of use to deduce its owner :

- File 7′s owner is or is part of an entity that must have had enough determination to see SAVE points.

- File 7′s owner first got in the underground after the 6 fallen humans, but before Flowey.

As monsters have very little determination compared to humans, the only logical place to search for a SAVE owner at this time period would be among the amalgamates, born from multiple monsters all of which were injected with human determination by Alphys.

Out of all the amalgamates, the one with the most determination would likely be the one that has the most DT injected entities merged within it assuming Alphys was at least somewhat consistent in her dosage.

We get to see Lemon Bread having at least 12 components, its however likely there are actually far more than this which simply cannot even be fit on the screen here, which would make it a likely candidate for this position along with Snowdrake’s mother.

On top of this, Lemon Bread behaves like a hive mind (That not being the case could result in issues like those Flowey faced with the 6 souls at the end of the fight in neutral and thus prevent getting access to the SAVE) which also plays in its favor as Snowdrake’s mother does not.

And finally, there is only one file in between the humans and Flowey. This means that our candidate is considered to be a single entity file wise despite being composed of multiple people in one body. (Unlike Frisk and Chara for instance) This again makes the option of the hive mind amalgamate seem more likely.

For these reasons, if any of the amalgamates had enough determination to see SAVE points and thus be a file owner, its likely it would be lemon bread.

How does the fight against lemon bread begin again ?

It disguises itself as a SAVE point.

Lemon bread does just so happen to know what a SAVE point looks like. Which would indeed make it a SAVE file owner.

File 7 is that of lemon bread, but never actually affects the gameplay much as Lemon bread has limited lore relevance compared to the other file owners.

File attribution theory and its implications allows to answer some questions that seemed impossible to answer before or to patch a couple issues that might have seemed like plot holes beforehand. There is still far more to say about the files 0-9 that will be addressed in future posts.

So, if you don't mind me asking. Is there any other info on Flo you have?, i don't see people make their own human souls anymore.

Oh hell yeah!! I've got info!! Thanks for giving me an excuse to talk more about my little guy. I was actually talking about them lots with mutuals on Discord, so there's some notes I can give!

Flo and Clover were raised in... a not very good household. This obviously had effected how they grew up and what their mentalities were. Flo very much believes in "survival of the fittest" and usually has a defensive attitude. They've got sass and WILL kick your ass (this is not a good thing). They've learned not to rely on adults and is actually a very independent kid. They've taken on a self-proclaimed role as Clover's protector. Their sibling is their utmost priority!

Despite their aggressive nature, Flo has a fun flair for the dramatics and loves dance. They went out on their own to sign up for a dance class not only because they wanted to do so, but they figured it's necessary to find themself a purpose like this so they can show the world they have something to offer.

Considering their soul has the trait of Integrity, it's important to look at a definition of it: "The quality of being honest and having strong moral principles that you refuse to change" I like to tie this into their experience in the underground- They are following their beliefs and what they believe is the truth; monsters are beasts. Evil beasts. And they REFUSE to be taken down by them. They may not be very big, but Flo will fight until their last breath. They're so sure they're in the right. They can't be wrong. If they're wrong, what's the point of anything they're doing? Older sibling knows best.

They disappeared to the mountain when Clover was younger. I'm still deciding WHY they went- Maybe a dance recital went wrong and they ran away embarrassed before tripping into the underground? In present Undertale Yellow, Clover's a big kid and can go be a sheriff for real! They wanted to find their sibling. After doing research, they figured out that they went missing at Mt. Ebott where a lot of other kids disappeared. So, Clover thought they could go and search for all of them and find their sibling too.

OMG THANK YOU I LOVE YOU!!! i can let this information out without feeling too annoying because now i'm answering an ask so it's fine !! it's going to be so long I'm so sorry, but what are we on tumblr for if not to rumble about our interests, right? also i hope the fact you don't know undertale doesn't make this too confusing !! also spoiler warning i guess ??

general world building:

the humans have forgotten about the monsters and magic, they are only remembered in myths and legends (i made a cool thing about it)

all of the humans had a similar experience to us playing the game, they learned about the monster history, made friends and eventually kinda gave up in hope to help the monsters

right so, first human: chara!

chara is already in the game, but I think i made them the richest backstory

"chara" is a nickname, their name is actually character. they were bullied for that name and they really hate it, wishing they could get any other name (like what happens at the start of the game!)

they were named character because of an old tradition to name kids based on the first word you see in the spell book that runs in their family. however the book is encrypted, and their parents ended up on a random character they couldn't read.

they didn't get along with the other kids in school, and were trying to study their behavior so they can understand them better by taking notes of what they said and drawing their facial expressions (the way text is shown in the game!)

eventually, they came to the conclusion they don't like the other children and don't want to be like them, so they decided to learn how to push them away (by making scary faces!)

always get red eyes in photos

next: patience soul! i'll be honset i wrote these stories 6 years ago, i think everyone had names but i don't remember them anymore, so all the children will now be called their soul trait gbfdjfd

patience was a girl from chara's village, and chara's only friend! or well chara was patiance only friend. their parents were friends so when they hung out patience and chara were left to play together. patience liked chara as she was home school and didn't get to play with other kids, while chara was mostly annoyed about the whole thing and felt like patience friendship wasn't genuine, as they were forced into hanging out

she really likes cute things, like dressing cute and putting on make up! she introduced chara to make up which ended up helping chara make scary faces (such as melty face look)

she wanted to be a Dr when she grows up, hence the toy knife (meant to be like a surgery knife for children) and the bandages at the flowey fight

when chara left to the mountain, patience just waited for them to come back. they waited and waited, until asriel got to the village. only then they decide to go to the mountain. they found out chara died very shortly after getting underground, and so lost their determination and was killed easily.

they got to the underground right after asgore declared war against humanity, asogre probably hoped it will take a while for a human to arrive but one fell down and was killed really soon! this just made more sense to me for why toriel left without talking asgore out of it, and why she hates him so much. things escalated really quick

bravery soul!

youngest brother of like 5 older brothers and a single dad.

his brothers always bullied him for being soft and girlie (I also considered him being afab but im not sure !)

got the worn boxing gloves his dad used to have when he was young, they have big holes and patches

also maybe his mom died when he was born, and she was also a red head like him, which is part of the femininity stuff ?

as part of a prank, his brothers dared him to go to the mountain and come back to prove himself thinking he won't go, but he did!

didn't stay with toriel because he was in a rush to get home to prove his brothers he did it

integrity!! this is where me not being a native english speaker gets me because I'm not sure what integrity means and it ruined their backstory a bit! I used to treat it as "being true to yourself" but now I think it's more about staying true to your morals, which is a bit different oops !

amab and nonbinary! their mom used to be a ballet dancer and now is a ballet teahcer

they were the only male student, and were jealous and hurt that all the girls got to wear tutus but them, and thought it wasn't fair

they sneakily stole their mom old dusty tutu from the attic and were secretly practicing in their room, until they were caught

they felt so guilty and ashamed that they ran away from home to the mountain

toriel reminded them of their mom, and how worried she must be, so they didn't stay with her

perseverance!!

kindness' little sister!

while looking for books in the library, she stumbled upon and old and encrypted spell book (yes this is the book that was in chara's family!) after a lot of hard work she learned how to decrypt it using some context clues, and with it she learned about the monsters and magic and even a few spells!

when she tried talking about her findings nobody took her seriously, and people at her school made fun of her

even her brother was trying to be supportive but didn't really believe her, which prompted her to run away to the mountain to prove everyone the monsters are real and she's right

in the underground, she was able to use her spells! like the unused spell option in the original battle menu! she also befriended Gerson as they shared their love to history, and she gave him her notebook and glasses (as they were fogging up too much to see out of anyway) as a parting gift! (maybe she also casted a duplication spell on them, considering the infinite supply at his store?)

also she didn't stay with Toriel because she was focused on getting back home to show everyone she was right at that stage

kindness!

perseverance older brother !

honestly, he's just a cutie that likes to cook! will often make and food just for sharing with his classmates

when perseverance was sad that nobody was taking her seriously, he went to make her favorite food to cheer her up. she wasn't answering him for a bit and assumed she just locked herself in her room because she was sad, so he gave her some time until eventually he decided to come in to check on her and realized she ran away through the window

he was probably a few hours behind her on the adventure, both as he gave her time, and he checked up a few places before going to the mountain, and he was more lost and confused than her when it came to exploring (also he was wearing flip flops still, which slowed him down)

didn't stay with Toriel because he was determined to find his sister, but then he found out she sacrificed herself, and decided to join her (both for the monsters and for her sake out of guilt)

justice!! she's the only one I know their name! her name is mustard !! just like undertale yellow I was tempted to call her clover based on the "clover" shooting from her gun at the flowey fight, but actually according to the file name this is not a clover but a flower! and mustard has a yellow flower with 4 petals and it's cute !!

moved to the village near the mountain with her family only recently, and this was their first Halloween in the town! and actually her first Halloween ever, as where she used to live they didn't celebrate it

she loves cowboys ! her grandpa was an actor in old cowboy films, he passed before she was born so she only know him through these films, and thinks he was a real cowboy

the gun she has is his old gun, that she got from her dad for her costume

she saw a group of bullies picking up on a younger child and trying to steal his candy, so she jumped to protect him saying she has a gun, but that didn't go very well as that terrified the small child and made them ran away. she tried to ran after them but ended up getting lost on the mountain

didn't stay with toriel because she wanted to return to her parents who must have been worried for her

lastly we got frisk!! i didn't get much background for frisk but more like a bunch of headcanons about them

probably homeless? and honestly, might have hit their head when climbing the mountain and suffer from amnesia, so they don't know their backstory either so it's fine!

really need glasses! explaining the small eyes and the whole game being pixelated and the small screen size, they just can't see

when asriel said frisk and chara have similar fassion choices he didn't mean like the striped shirt (as all children wear striped shirts) but like the way they have an under layer, cargo shorts for more pockets (also inventory space has to do with how many pockets you have!!) and boots !

fell underground the same age chara did, so like 10? and chara spent like a year underground

went to the mountain because it was some sort of a calling? they didn't really understand why but they felt like they needed to

also this is a headfanon but I'm for frisk and chara being far relatives!

wooo we did it all humans !!! now some extra general stuff:

the red soul's trait is love!!

all the humans came back to life after the asriel fight!!! and their body were fully healed and fine! Asgore probably bandaged them as he buried them in the coffins, and when they woke up (and opened chara's coffin seeing it's empty) they left their bandages there explaining the mummy wrapping that appear

considering it's been decades since some of them fell down, they had no where to go after this, and were all adopted by toriel! which also motivated her to open the school ! this idea of all of them being roomates and living together is what sparked all of this in the first place, i just really wanted to have a blog where people ask me things as them

at the end of the flowey fight, all of their soul traits "evolved", as seen with the color change when you ask for help, completing their character arc. all of them were helping flowey as part of their flaw, but frisk calling for help helped them change. for example, just as patience was always waiting to see what will happen, she wasn't trying to stand up to flowey, but she learned to be more brave and act! bravery learned to stop complying to every dare he gets and stand for himself and so on.

and that's everything i think !! if you made it all this way you get a sticker! i hope this helped with whatever boredom you were facing !

now i can stop worrying about how their story will never be out there, as it is now! and if nobody cares that's fine !!

The red soul trait is not determination

One piece of fanon that has become so widespread in the community that some even forget that it isn’t canon is the idea that the red soul represents determination.

We know about the six other soul traits from the ball game in Snowdin.

The 7 possible flags in this game fit with the 7 soul colors. The first 6 can all be linked to the fallen human’s traits.

The last possible flag however, the red flag, simply restates the previous traits in a more explicit manner and associates them with their colors. Saying that a combinaison of all of them led us to victory.

Getting the red flag a second time will result in the red flag getting some different dialogue relating to Frisk’s sense of selfhood.

The red soul trait does not ever get explicitly associated with a trait unlike the other ones. Yet is often assumed to be determination due to DT’s importance in Undertale in general and some flavor text.

But the thing is... Frisk does not actually have special ties with determination other than those that naturally come with being a human.

Firstly, having high amounts of the determination substance like Frisk does is the norm for humans and is not a particularity of Frisk’s.

This is especially relevant considering that dialogues from Toriel and Asgore also imply the 6 fallen humans had the power to SAVE and LOAD too before eventually giving up when fighting the latter.

Frisk’s determination is really nothing out of the ordinary for human standards and simply wouldn’t be warrant of being Frisk’s trait, even if determination had been an actual trait. Which is already quite dubious in itself as determination in Undertale is primarly a substance to which the feeling is secondary.

if anything, there would be more basis on associating Frisk with patience than with determination. That one is actually associated with Frisk’s personality unlike the latter.

As for the flavor texts, Toby has mentioned the SAVE points to be a manifestation of one’s determination.

The 6 humans and Flowey were also able to SAVE/LOAD. Accordingly, the fallen humans and Flowey all had their own SAVE points and each of them was “filled with determination” next to the manifestation of their own determination.

These flavor texts again do not represent anything that’s associated with Frisk in particular and do not tie them to the feeling of determination more than any of the other humans.

To continue, determination is never linked to the color red in Undertale at any point. The two are never even vaguely implied to have anything to do with each other at all.

The concept of the burden of proof dictates that the one making the claim has to be the one providing evidence for said claim, otherwise it is invalid and should be assumed to be wrong by default. Red determination is incapable of providing any evidence for itself that holds ground. Because of this, it cannot even be considered as a theory, it is just a headcanon.

However, the game does actually provide plenty of evidence which goes against it.

Determination is golden

Determination might never be tied to the color red whatsoever, but it does actually get hinted on several occasions to be of a specific color. And that color is actually that of gold.

Firstly, the SAVE points have already been stated by Toby Fox to be a manifestation of pure determination. It is thus only logical that the color of the SAVE points would be the color of determination.

That color is #fff200 gold.

Whenever a SAVE file is SAVED using said SAVE points, the text of the file goes from white to gold at the exact moment the button is pressed, thus using determination to SAVE it.

Whenever Flowey SAVES a SAVE file in a neutral route, this text is gold colored as well. (LOADS remain white however)

Similarly, in the menu, the continue and reset buttons flash gold when we hover over them.

All golden flowers in Undertale always come in 3 different shades, all except one which has apparently shifted away from its natural color at some point.

The exception is non other than Flowey himself. Flowey is a slightly brighter shade of gold than any other golden flower in UT. Not only that, but the shade of gold Flowey has just so happens to actually be the exact same one as the color of the SAVE points and presumed color of determination : #fff200.

Flowey was injected with determination after all, that color change Flowey had is very likely to have come from Alphys' experiments during which the flower took the taint of the substance it was injected with in large amounts : Determination.

Even Alphys, who has seen pure DT and who out of any character should have at least a rough memory of the color it had, writes the word "determination" in a shade close to that of the SAVE points in the true lab.

In the meantime, determination is never written in red.

It is noteworthy that not all instances of this use the exact same shade of gold. That being said, it is not arguable that determination is constantly associated with a golden color.

It goes without saying that if determination is golden colored, it doesn’t make sense for it to be the red soul trait. A color that DT is not associated with a single time in the whole game.

The SAVE power inconsistency

On top of the golden color issue, there is one huge contradiction to the idea that determination could be the red soul trait.

The six fallen humans, who did not have red souls, had the power to SAVE.

Chara, who did have a red soul, did not have the power to SAVE.

With the other six humans being determined enough to be able to reach the treshold but not Chara. We find ourselves in a situation where out of the 7 humans that came before Frisk, the only one of them who had a red soul was the one with the least determination of them all.

Needless to say that Chara’s soul trait being determination simply does not make any sense. And subsequently, it being the red soul trait would not either.

What is the red soul, then ?

The true nature of the red soul trait is unknown, that being said, there are multiple other theories about its nature which all have actual evidence backing them up in the game such as “Ipseity”, “Love”, “Hope”, or even “A combinaison of the 6 other traits”.
