10 underrated tips to become a better writer

hello hello, it's me again!

today i want to share some tips to improve your writing!

1. write in a different style

sometimes it's important to step out of our comfort zone, especially when it comes to writing. the next time you sit down to write for a bit, try to do something different from usual... try poetry if you always write prose; try fantasy if your thing is mystery; try adventure if you only write romance. it's up to you, just do it! who knows if you discover a new passion while trying this exercise...

2. write from a different point of view

i know it can be tempting to always write from a certain point of view, or to always use the same narrator voice, but (like on the first topic) sometimes change is needed to improve. you'll see things from another perspective, and maybe you can have a brilliant idea!

3. write with music

this one is one of my favorites! i love music, my spotify is full of playlists, one for each mood. try to create different playlists for your stories, and pick songs that motivate you, or that make you feel like you're one of the characters of your novel. this will not only give you a boost to write but also make you feel inspired.

4. set a timer

i always do this! it's a life changer. i started doing the pomodoro method to study and realized how effective it is. it's the same when it comes to writing: set about thirty minutes to write (it's up to you, depending on for how long you can be productive) and ten to fifteen minutes to relax. you'll see how much more work you can do with this method!

5. use prompts

you know how much i love prompts! i think they're so useful and help us so much to become more creative. they are a great way to step out of our comfort zone and develop someone else's idea in a span of a few minutes or hours.

oh, and if you're feeling adventurous, try this month's writing challenge!

6. write in a different place

guys! change your writing environment sometimes, especially when you're feeling overwhelmed or drained. i know it can be tempting to always sit on your sofa / bed / favorite chair, but sometimes we get so accustomed to the same place, that our creativity slows down, as well as our motivation. try to go outside to a park or a café, it can be so fun and you'll feel like the main character. or maybe, if you don't want to be in public, try another room in your house! just make sure you feel comfortable and don't have distractions around you.

7. change your writing support

do you always write on your computer? try to disconnect for a while, grab a pen and a paper, and let your imagination flow. it can be so freeing to write by hand sometimes, especially when you're plotting a novel! how cool it is to draw a scheme to connect all the characters and locations, and to doodle...!

8. find a writing buddy

personally, i don't have one, but i know it can be such a fun way to keep you motivated and to keep yourself (and the other person) accountable. it's great to have someone to share your ideas with, to give and receive feedback, and to lift you up to write when you don't like doing so.

9. write yourself a letter

trust me, it's amazing. it can be to your present self, past, or future, it's up to you. tell yourself what your writing goals are, what you are writing, how you see yourself in the future, what you're satisfied with your writing style, etc. just let it flow and re-read it whenever you feel unmotivated.

10. write with a sense of humor

i know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it can be so fun sometimes. try something less serious when you don't feel like writing. try to come up with a joke mid-dialogue, write a fun scene or re-write a serious scene in a less serious way. this exercise can be great to see things from another perspective, to try a different style, or to lift up your mood.

Hi!! I hope I'm not disturbing you but I wanted to ask how do I work hard. Because when I was younger I got really good marks without trying and now the subjects are hard and social media is distracting but I can't seem to delete it. This is also why my grades are even low then before and I'm really afraid to disappoint my parents (being the eldest daughter doesn't help). So can you please just give me some pointers on how can I actually study and not just cry because I don't know how to. Have a great day!! <3

literally omg. is this past me asking me a question?? like actually u have no idea how much i relate and understand this. the "gifted child" who always got good grades without needing to study now finds things more difficult. i know many people have said this, but i actually have been through this not too long ago. i hope these tips help <3

how to work hard + actually study (realistic)

forget hard work. at least do the work! (its so funny because i literally had a post about this all ready in my drafts about to get posted, so i'll keep this short and link the post.) stop focussing on doing hard work like studying 24/7. just put in the basic necessities you need to get a better grade. hard work post link

use the disappointment and embarrassment as fuel. (basically find a very strong why) (mini story-ish thing coming up, skip to the blue text for the actual advice) i still remember the day i got such a bad score on my math and science test, i was FURIOUS at myself and i cried about it! telling it to my parents was one of the hardest things i had to do and feeling their disappointment was even worse. but that became my turning point. i was so ashamed of myself and i resented me so much that i basically just told myself "i dont freaking care what you feel *with distaste*. you brought this on yourself you failure" (a bit very harsh, yes i know) but the way i studied that week- i studied more than i every had before! also doing this doesnt really lower my self esteem a whole lot, but if it does with you, please be gentle with yourself. : so what i'm trying to say it; use that feeling of shame and disapointment as a fuel, a motivation. The big “why”.

ALTER EGOOOSSSS. this helps SOOOO MUCH its so underrated. embody the energy of your fav people who are the academic inspiration you wanna be! example: rory gilmore, paris geller, elle woods, blair waldorf, etc etc! not only is this so helpful but it also makes it so much more fun and easier!!

parent yourself. i used to tell myself to do stuff like "go study now!" or "get up lazy-butt" but in my mind. but what if you tried to say those stuff out loud to yourself? it just creates a whole new level of real. So start telling yourself to do stuff out loud.

honestly just start. stop letting yourself think about how "uncomfortable" and how "annoying" it will be. All you need to know is that you need to get it done. Right? Ok. So now what’s the next smallest step you can take to getting to do the unwanted task? It may be taking out your material, opening your book, etc.

( !! tough love, but very important rant coming up)

You privileged brat. Your parents gave up EVERYTHING so you could have the education that you are having. They worked so so hard for YOU. So YOU can have the life you want. And all for what? Just for you to throw it all away and say “oh im lazy”. HELL NAH.

And also, do you realise how fortunate you are to be even living in such a time/ era where you have access to basically EVERYTHING? You’re stuck on something? You could easily search it up!! And whats more is that you can further learn. You can search up and find out more about the thing that you’re studying, become the smartest person in your class, get so ahead in life. I hope you realise that if you do use all the resources and materials and help that’s been given to you, just imagine how far you could go! Further than Albert Einstine, Elon Musk, etc. you may be like “what! No that’s gonna be too hard!” But did they have the tools that you have right at your hand? No! They made it all the way with just simple stuff and having to work super hard. But you live in a time where you can do TWICE as much without working as hard!!

And one more thing, QUIT WHINING. “Oh school is so hard!” “Oh school is so boring!” Like whattt???? You are so FORTUNATE and LUCKY to be even getting access to such education! MILLIONS of kids out there would kill to be able to learn what you are so easily dismissing right now. So TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WHAT YOU HAVE. Put your ALL, your very BEST into studying and getting good grades because THAT is whats gonna take you so SO far in life.

dealing with social media:

put the screen time widget on your phone home screen. i did this, and i became so embarrassed by the amount of screen time i had in one day (*cough* 12 hours *cough*) that i made certain to stop using it as much.

screen time limits. this may or may not help you, bc i know that when i knew the screen time password, it didn't do a lot of help but when someone else did (like parents or someone you trust), then it definitely worked. this is probably only best if you're a child around under 14 ish bc thats around the age when most parents put screen time limits + after that age you're gonna be a lot more independent.

ikepri as school supplies

jin- ruler/straight edge

some girls just really love using a ruler because their notes won’t be “aesthetic” without them. but most people could care less about how their notes look, so not the most popular of the school supplies but he’s really special to some.

chevalier- wooden pencil

everyone needs one, nothing can beat the good old-fashioned graphite tip. a really popular tool, actually probably the most necessary. you see them everywhere and it’s in high demand.

clavis- mechanical pencil

also in high demand but you’re significantly more cool if you have a fancy mechanical pencil. you’ve upgraded, but still, a lot of tests recommend or sometimes require only regular wooden pencils.

leon- glue

not everyone gets glue. even if it’s on the school supply list or syllabus, you don’t actually need to buy a new bottle of school glue every year. but when you need glue for projects, you’re screwed without it. overlooked and underrated of the school supplies.

yves- crayons/color pencils

very colorful, used in art projects, or if you teacher believes that using colors help you learn. everyone gets a new box (the cheap ones if that’s all you can afford) every year. somehow, after a few years of buying new ones each year, they all get collected in this huge box and it’s an impressive collection.

licht- index cards

not really necessary to buy, but it does help if you’re studying something.

nokto- sticky notes

again, not really necessary but some people just adore the sticky notes. can be very entertaining if you have the ones that alternate and it looks like a slinky

luke- white out

related to the eraser. covers up certain mistakes. not a lot of people have white out and if you do, it can either get messy (liquid white out) or it just doesn’t work (tape white out)

gilbert- eraser

erase your mistakes, a counterattack to the wooden pencil. sometimes you accidentally erase too hard and you erase the pencil you didn’t mean to. a very popular tool that you’ll find in everyone’s school supplies.

keith- scissors

an innocent tool but it can also be dangerous. it’s called a pair of scissors for some reason? you might not use it all the time, but it sure is nice to have one of your own.

silvio- markers (possibly the scented ones)

really annoying as they can accidentally get all over your skin. no one uses them to color things, but if you do you’re probably a chaotic evil? markers are usually used to make things more bold

rio- highlighter

really bright and comes in different colors. not everyone understands how highlighting works and some people just don’t use highlighters at all. a bit related to markers as they are usually used to make things more bold.

sariel- pen

more permanent and not really used as much but it still is good to have. teachers use it more than pencils too. if you do your homework in pen you either are really confident, or you just don’t care about what writing utensil you use.

bonus: cyran- mechanical pencil refills

the mechanical pencil is useless without the refills so you kinda need those extra cartridges of graphite.

Sonic Underground: Queen Aleena

this woman is so underrated. She is literally the one of the only useful Royal's ACTIVELY working against Robotnik.

Brief history

An egyptian long-eared hedgehog

not from Mobotropolis, she had traveled there in her youth for her studies and to find a potential suitor

Her older sister was the heir for the throne, and had already happily married and had two children, so her royal duties were few and far between

this, as well as their mother's insistence, led to Aleena having a lot of freedom as she grew up, traveling around the world, training to be an ambassador of sorts

though Aleena is of royal lineage, she technically is not the Queen of Mobius, so much as the people's chosen royal due to her kindness and fight for equity

Mobotropolis' then Crown Prince (King Max) sought out a betrothal between the two, though this fell through

met Jules when he and Argus were helping Chuck test out an invention

more specifically when he crashed spectacularly into the fountain she had been reading beside, soaking her quills to toe

Random

she dyed her quills darker in her youth (this was somewhat traditional in her homeland)

has a limp from the injuries she received escaped the Raid of Mobotropolis

magic runs strongly in her family and is the partial source of Sonic's speed and Sonia's strength

skilled sorceress, though her magic is suffering from burnout due to the constant strain she is under

left arm formerly had special tattoos that helped stabilize her magic- serving as a sort of modulator

her limb was destroyed during Robotnik's takeover where she pushed hr magic too far trying to protect everyone

More specifcally a protection spell for her children, which lasted until their 15th birthday when they received their medallions

the tipping was when she tried to cast this on Jules as well- it caused a whiplash that wrecked her arm

Argus helped her as she recovered and take care of the kids

she had a bodyguard, though she perished in the Raid of Mobotropolis

underrated language learning tip: listen to asmr in your target language! (if that sorta thing doesn't give you the creeps) I find asmr is usually very easy to understand, with lots of repetition, and lots of over explaining. (plus it's super relaxing if studying is stressing you out!)

how to get things done

this is a complied list of all of my favorite tips and hacks for getting things done when you just can't get yourself to do anything.

consider your physical environment carefully. are you comfy? is your hair too greasy for your liking? maybe you'd feel more productive if you changed your sleeve situation. fix any issues you have.

go wash your face. do your whole skincare routine.

time to evaluate your emotional environment - nothing too deep tho. (unless it's one of those days). make a mindmap/brain dump page and put everything down.

use pink noise when studying to help focus!

create productivity menus (also known as ADHD menus or dopamine menus) to help fight task paralysis and the fear that comes with all that you have to do everyday

FOOTWEAR IS SO IMPORTANT. get some comfy shoes on!! i've got some high quality tennis shoes and it makes me feel like i could win the next presidential election.

get 20 minutes of physical activity - we should be getting an hour but we have to start somewhere (get ur ass on youtube, babe. even if it's just walking in place, which is extremely underrated)

do (1) thing everyday that you dread (something light-hearted tho, don't harm yourself) to help build discipline and self control. wash the dishes and fully put them away. meditate for 5 mins. put yourself into a position of growth. do it!!

film videos of you just speaking to yourself. it helps with your delivery, your confidence, and your understanding of how you come across.

So yeah I'm just tryna help. Fr.

Now listen u dont need to get an A* to be happy with ur grades. If those are ur goals then u go girl. If those are not u still go girl.

But my mum always says "Always aim higher than what u can get. Then you will reach the farthest u can go. Now go make another omelette for me."

Now a major thing I would do before an exam is open a candidate response, the qp, the ms and the examiner report.

Do each question, check with the markscheme, check the candidate response and assess where u are and then the examiner report.

Go read books from good authors like Madelline Miller, Katherine Arden, and Ocean Vuong. Get phrases that u really like and copy them into a word document. Go through it before the exam and use it in the writing

Ok this is adorable. I also adore Charlie boy and I hate that nobody writes for him! Hence why I'm writing for him, because he is SO UNDERRATED. Pro tip to the other people: requesting one of the characters on my list from Black Butler, Seraph of the End, Fairy Tail, and Case Study of Vanitas is an excellent way to ensure that I'll get to your request quickly.

Charles Grey as a Father~

Surprise, surprise. Got this one off Pinterest too.

🤍💙 Charles Grey with kids is a disaster. Not in a bad way, just in the sense that he's also a child at heart. You are definitely the only responsible being in the household.

🤍💙 This man is such a doting father honestly it's enough to bring you to tears. Catch him chasing the children around the house playing tag with them whenever he doesn't have important work to do. He'll have a tea party with his daughter if she asks.

🤍💙 Speaking of the daughter, she definitely takes after her father. The minute she was old enough to talk and develop a personality, you were like "oh shit there's two of them."

🤍💙 Both children are learning to fence. It's inevitable. He will teach them swordplay. Something tells me that your daughter has a special aptitude for the art!

🤍💙 Even though his son isn't quite as energetic and wild as Charlie himself is, he's still very proud. He tells everyone that his son will one day become a scientist or something and invent a flying machine or something.

🤍💙 He will constantly brag about his children at EVERY. SINGLE. SOCIAL. GATHERING. Nobody is exempt from hearing about how his daughter is growing into such a beautiful young lady, or how his son is going to be a lady-killer when he grows up. Phipps has heard every story at least five times, and probably stopped paying attention after the third recounting.

🤍💙 Speaking of Phipps, he is the godfather and basically the uncle of these children. He comes over for lunch every other weekend and the children love him!

🤍💙 Gonna be honest, the both of you are amazed at how well your children get along. It really isn't normal for siblings to be this close (trust me, I know. I've got two of em). But, hey, at least you don't have to deal with them trying to murder each other every five seconds!

There, with the sunlight filtering through the window, the man’s hair seems to glow golden, and the lines on his face are even more pronounced. Atsushi swallows nervously and does his best not to back off. He looks up, and meets Fukuzawa’s somber eyes and feels a bit of sweat trickle down his neck.

The president sighs and closes his eyes for a second. Runs his hands through his hair, and Atsushi already feels bad about all the problems he’s causing the man. He’s about to apologize, really, when Fukuzawa pronounces tiredly.

- I understand.

They leave to get to know themselves.

I am genuinely so in love with this fic you don’t even understand - i find it really quiet and comforting. DEFINITELY underrated - it’s one of the fics i’ll always recommend

TIP: read in the middle of the night before you go to bed!! i’ve read it so many times and this personally was my favourite time to read it

yokohama bay hotel by spirallings (9k) - teen

Ryuunosuke started his channel, originally, as a means to make his sister smile and laugh when they lived in that oppressive house. It grew far beyond that and allowed them to escape, and now it's his means of income: but he has always kept a tight lid on his privacy, separating his personal life from the persona he puts on YouTube and social media accounts.

While struggling to come up with ideas, he clicks on a video on his recommended feed and it leads him to the work of a reclusive musician under the penname Byakko Chain. All Ryuunosuke knows about him at first is his singing voice, his hands, and his guitar.

And those walls come tumbling down.

this fic i think is one i didn't expect to love as much as i did - i actually just reread it, but the comment i wrote before was that i didn't remember what happened in the fic, i just clearly remember how much i loved it - the first half was amazing but it's definitely the second half that ties it altogether

also i think the way the author writes makes it so easy to imagine - like,, the imagery isn't overdone but you can kinda see what it's like and it's so sweet (it actually reminds me of one of my favourite study with me's set in yokohama - also a rec!!)

TIP: id just say somewhere quiet where you can listen to music - i could easily read it during the day but i just prefer comforting fics late at night cause they make me feel like when i wake up i can actually live out what happens in the fic (obviously i can't but it's nice to dream)

An Awkward Encounter by SapphireSunstone (4k) - teen

Imagine you're trying to leave your secret boyfriend's place only to be met with your co-worker who is also trying to leave his secret boyfriend's place and in the middle of arguing you see your secret boyfriend's co-worker and you see a glimpse of his secret-boyfriend.

Chuuya and Akutagawa's walks of shame seem to follow a similar path.

fluff and crack, what else could you ask for? side note: it also reminded me of a post i saw a while back by @hoshiumiumi (please look at their latest poe art it’s so pretty!!)

TIP: no tip, read whenever!!! might smile though so don’t read in front of your parents/friends if they’re the type of people who ask ‘oh what are you smiling at? are you texting someone?’and you don’t wanna tell them that you read fanfic

It's an accident, for once. He was actually following the Official Household Chore Schedule and doing the dishes while Chuuya was out getting groceries. But one of the plates was slipperier than he expected, and as he attempted to dry it, it fumbled just enough out of his grip to crack against the countertop, chipping a bit off the edge.

It isn’t one of Chuuya’s fancy plates. Dazai is fairly certain that Chuuya has no particular attachment to this dish at all, actually. It’s plain white and utilitarian, part of a larger set.

So Dazai can’t explain why he’s frozen in place, rooted to the floor by some welling emotion he can’t quite pinpoint.

(Alternatively: local brilliant strategist has a slight meltdown over small uncontrollable part of everyday life)

Why did I create TheWriteAdviceForWriters

Writing is my dream, I love the art of writing stories created from your mind and imagination. I've always had a big imagination since I was young. Once I discovered I wanted to be a writer. I went straight ahead to researching. There were many websites that helped with creative writing and it was so helpful to have an already made guide for new writers or any leveled writers. I also always had a passion for teaching and bringing knowledge to others, I love researching and learning about things that really interest me. So, I thought why not make a blog/brand to help writers like myself? and that's where it began...

Where did I come up with the name

I wanted people to be attracted to my brand, and wanted to let others know I'll be giving them the right advice, So I decided to change "right" into "write" to make it sound more wittful.

Anime for Learning Japanese Recs

Chances are if you’re learning Japanese, one of your motivators is being able to enjoy Japanese media like anime and understand it completely. And while some people might argue against using anime as a tool to learn anime, I say it actually is a great tool to use for shadowing and listening practice IF you use the right series (and don’t entirely rely on anime alone).

My biggest pro tip would be avoid using extremely action/fantasy-oriented anime like Jujutsu Kaisen, Naruto or even Boku no Hero Aacdemia. I’m not saying to you shouldn’t watch them, but I am saying that those aren’t anime to watch for studying. Those are more like entertainment anime. Nice as those anime are, a good portion of the vocabulary wouldn’t exactly be... useful. Trust me, unless you’re talking about the show specifically with friends, ‘cursed energy’ and ‘illusion techniques’ are the last words you should be learning lol.

So I will be supplying a list of anime I enjoy and think would be great tools for aiding your journey learning the Japanese language.

Fruits Basket 2019・フルーツバスケット

Long long ago, God decided to throw a festival extending an invite to distinct creatures of the land. Fruits Basket is one of my favorite series of all time, it’s literally in my top 3 anime/manga of all times. It was the first manga I read back in the early 2000s as a little kid, the 2001 anime garnered a huge fanbase, it just has a special place in my heart. It might like look like a typical love triangle series with a bland protagonist and equally bland love interests where she plays ‘which personality do I like the most’, but Fruits Basket is definitely not that. Character journeys are non-linear, the good and bad lovely and messy parts of relationships are depicted and even side characters are given justice and arcs. Despite its whimsical summary, however, Fruits Basket is a story about abuse, trauma and healing and may be triggering for some. But I assure you, Furuba handles the topic abuse with so much respect and grace and deserves every praise it receives as a character-driven story. (There is a 2001 adaptation but it isn’t entirely faithful to the manga so I recommend watching the 2019 remake first.)

Note: Despite being an early 2000s series, Furuba’s remake was adapted to modern day with smart phones and the like so outdated language isn’t really a problem. You’ll actually be getting a good mixture of formal and informal speech throughout the show thanks to our protagonist, Tohru. Contrast to the rest of the cast, Tohru consistently speaks using keigo ー a quirk pointed out by the rest of cast. So if you’re trying to work on formal speech, Tohru will be a useful character to pay attention to.

NANA・ナナ

Nana Komatsu is a naïve 20 year old with a penchant for easily falling in love at first sight. Nana Osaki is a jaded 20 year old polishing the shards of her dream to become a successful rock musician. These two young women are as different as different gets and yet they find their worlds colliding after fate brings them together on a one-way train ride to Tokyo. Once they find themselves rooming together in apartment number 707, it is clear both Nanas are in for the journey of a lifetime.

One of the most underrated josei anime of all time and another 1 of my top 3 series of all time. The characters? Amazing. The music? Ten out of ten. The Nanas have such great chemistry and both are equally amazing. Nana can be a bit to real when it comes to emotions, messy relationships and everything in between so it can be extremely personal, especially if you are in the same age demographic as the the main cast. I also have a fun little anecdote about how I share birthdays with Olivia Lufkin who provides the singing voice for the character Reira and we exchanged birthday DMs, this series is literally everything to me. If more people come to learn about it and love it through language learning, the better!

Note: NANA takes place in around the early 2000s so things like slang might be a little outdated but you’ll hear plenty of casual speech in order to talk with friends

Given・ギヴン

High schooler Ritsuka Uenoyama has a simple plan: tolerate school and rock out with his band. But a wrench is thrown into the cogs after he encounters fellow student Mafuyu Sato, a quiet boy who constantly carries around a guitar case. Weird as he is though, the kid has some pipes. Upon asking Mafuyu to join the band though, Ritsuka finds himself annoyed and stumped when the guy says ‘no thanks, not interested’.

Honestly my favorite quirk of this series is how each of the for protagonists has a kanji for one of the four seasons in their names 冬, 夏, 春 and 秋. Given is a lovely series to watch with gay and bi characters and encouraging message surrounding coming to terms with one’s sexuality. This anime does have light suicide mentions as Mafuyu’s previous boyfriend committed suicide prior to the beginning of the series, so I would like for that to be open so no one is taken aback by it. And if you’re looking for a series centered around a queer cast with a splash of music, this is the series for you.

Asobi Asobase・あそびあそばせ

Enter Olivia, an American raised in Japan who can’t speak English. Enter Kasumi who, in spite of her seemingly intellectual appearance, is absolutely trash when it comes to her English class. Then enter Hanako, an intellectual student with decent athletic skills who literally just wants to be popular. Somehow, they end up creating a club together. What kind of club? One centered around learning fun past times and hand games.

Pure chaos and girls being girls the anime, that’s it send tweet. There’s honestly not much more I can say about it, but if you’re looking for a light-hearted watch to accompany your learning this is it right here.

Aria the Animation・ARIA

In the hopes of becoming a certified gondolier, young Akari Mizunashi decides to leave her home on Earth and travel to the new blue planet of Mars to live on Neo-Venezia. Along the way, she meets other apprentices hoping for the same thing and they all train hard in order to accomplish their goals of becoming Primas.

A wholesome and slow series to use to learn Japanese that I loved watching as a kid. Aria actually have several series with the main three, in order being Aria the Animation, Aria the Natural and Aria the Origination. I recommend giving this show a watch! Each episode is its own adventure while following the overarching story of the three protagonists establishing themselves in their chosen career paths. The animation is lovely and so is the music, so I’d give this underrated classic a watch for your studies.

Carole and Tuesday・キャロル&チューズデイ

Carole is an orphan from Earth. Tuesday is a Mars native who runs away from home to escape her stuffy and sheltered rich life. The one thing they have in common? Their desire to create music and after meeting during one of Carole’s impromptu street performances, they realize that their talents combined will get them a lot farther than if they tried being solo artists.

Another music series but with some light science fiction elements since, like the previous recommendation, C&T takes place on terraformed Mars. And all things considered, C&T is a pretty diverse show with characters of different ethnicities all over and even one of the main characters being a black teen. So if you’re really looking to have some diverse cast members in your anime, give this anime a shot.
