Now anime is the main thing I watch. And when I realized this was anime explains so much about myself. The fact I was drawn into anime as a kid. Like I was obsessed with this show. I watched this at the age of 10. I didn't even watch Sailor Moon until I was 18. I HAVEN'T WATCHED THE REMAKE YET IM SO SCARED.

POP GIRL HAD SO MANY GOOD SHOWS. Ruby Gloom let me tell you. I always thought Ruby Gloom was Tim Burton's Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends. Misery was my favourite character.

Summary: Yumi and Aelita are getting ready for the dance while, Ulrich and Jeremy are waiting for them.

“Aelita, are you ready?” Yumi said as she knocked on the girl's door. Yumi was wearing a long dark blue dress and her hair now reached her midback.

“I am,” Aelita said, as she came out of her room, she was wearing an all-white heart line dress and her hair was pulled back into a low ponytail. “How do I look?”

“Jeremy, won’t know what to say,” Yumi told her causing her to blush and look away.

“You look nice as well. What did Ulrich tell you when he saw you?” Aelita asked, Yumi sighed and said, “He said nothing at all can you believe him, after all, this time we have been dating he still can’t tell me I look nice.”

Aelita giggled, “Maybe he was too awestruck to say something?”

“He had better be. Come on, we can talk some more when we finally get to the dance.” Yumi said interlocking her arms with Aelita.

“Yeah, let’s go,” Aelita said as they went downstairs where the boys were waiting. Aelita smiled as Jeremy’s eye widen as she came downstairs. She walked over and stood in front of him.

“So how do I look, Jeremy?” Aelita asked. Jeremy stood silent.

“Hey, Einstien you might want to say something to your date don’t be like to cool over her who did not say anything at all to Yumi when she came out,” Odd told him nudging him with his elbow which got him moving again. Ulrich said nothing but glared at Odd at his words.

“You look very beautiful.” Jeremy finally told her, he blushed and turned away from her slightly.

Yumi and Aelita giggled.

“Let’s get going before we are late,” Ulrich said as the five of them walked out of the doors and to the auditorium.

An adult critiques a children’s show part whatever

On this day 15 years ago, Code Lyoko first premiered on Cartoon Network in the US. Looks like I will talk about it on this day after all. Having just finished season 4 relatively blind, I have a bunch of things to say, both good and bad. I also come to the conclusion that show had potential that could have driven it to ATLA levels of following. Maybe some hyperbole, but we’ll get to that in a bit. For now, let’s dive in to a more detailed look at CL and why it worked for me. This time spoilers are afoot. 

First I’ll just give my season 4 review: it was awesome. The whole digital sea concept was done so well. The irl bases was kind of...shark jumping but in a good way. I suppose it was the only logical conclusion left and I honestly can’t complain. Basically everything I said about season 3, but better...for the most part. Season 4 had the opposite problem of season 1: it went way too fast. Well ok maybe not fast, more like abrupt. It felt like the last three episodes were planned much later and seeing rumors of a mountain replika, plus the fabled lava sector this might be true. It just felt disjointed and really out of no where. William never gets to redeem himself because fuck William, a lot of the mysteries surrounding Franz Hopper are unresolved, and the final episode was just a really bad clip show. I really wish the finale did a time skip or maybe Franz left an exposition file to solve more mysteries. Heck even a lot of why Lyoko existed was left unexplored. This segues into my next point that will be long: potential. 

With the finale fresh on my mind and looking back over a decade back to this show, there was some serious potential to make this show ATLA in terms of how massive the show became. It was REALLY close. Unfortunately many problems that was inherent throughout the series never left, such as the side cast being under developed. Season 1 it was doing ok and looked like Sissi wasn’t going to be an insufferable cunt throughout or maybe we can bring back based Jim. Then season 2 came and everyone was reset and Jim was put back on meme duties. Even some of the main cast don’t really grow. Jeremy seemed to regress into an over controlling freak, Yumi still sucks, and Odd is under developed. I like him don’t get me wrong. His bantz are top tier, but I feel like we don’t know too much about him outside the le funny guy routine (minus some exceptions). Ulrich kinda grew to not having a stick up his ass perpetually. Aelita on the other hand must of been someones waifu. Her entire arc is really done well and you can really sympathize with her. Aelita also has a lot of rather terrifying implications (the fact she is over 20 springs to mind) that makes her a very complex and at times a tragic character. Then you have shits like Yumi. Oh man. 

Yumi is basically the walking love interest. Ulrich and eventually William go through constant fights and REEEEs with even some fights being exactly the same. At least they had the friendzone conversation which I totally understood Yumi’s reasoning, but it didn’t matter since the UlrichxYumi ship would be constantly teased at for the whole run. The only thing I can say about Yumi was her family issues at home. That shit is really depressing and explains a lot of Yumi’s attitude. It doesn’t help that her brother seemingly materialized in season 2. Then they added William because why not. William is a case of “would’ve liked if the writers did also.” He is woefully underused. I like the idea of adding a Lyoko warrior and while William’s character is basically trying to cuck Ulrich out of Yumi, it could’ve worked. Alas someone must been a Yulrich shipper and so William gets cucked by XANA for the rest of the series to be le evil bad guy because fuck William. 

There are many, MANY things that had Code Lyoko done differently, the show would be like ATLA. I know I keep bringing that show up, but there is a reason why that show is highly regarded. It’s a simple, yet interesting premise. The writing and the lore behind it is amazing. You really learned about not only the characters, but the world around it. It feels so alive and most characters are very complex and have very defined motivations. Code Lyoko on the other hand has the makings of something similar, but it felt like they were too scared. Season 1 is probably the safest monster of the week show, which inevitably brings the whole show down. Those 20 odd episodes that could have added some mystery/lore to Lyoko and giving characters more backgrounds are instead wasted on stuff that for all intents and purposes, don’t add much whatsoever. I would have loved to see more of Odd’s family life beyond vague references, Yumi getting actual development, more Lyoko lore, William getting a redemption arc, there is just so much more the show could have done. 

Again I shat on Code Lyoko hard, but this is the part where I say it’s still a great show and that lies in the premise. There was a lot of good ideas and made the world seem really cool. The interactions between most of the characters are great and always sneaks in a way to get a chuckle from me. The crazy, dumb shit XANA did were also a delight and Aelita’s whole arc was fantastically done. I could go on, but this is long enough already. There is a reason why i watched nearly 100 episodes of this show and well it’s just good. If the entire season 1 was retooled, I think this show would’ve had more potential to be a series everyone looks at and says “hey this is a fantastic show. watch it now. you won’t regret it.” I’ll leave behind this vintage meme. Ay Dios Odd también era mi crush <3 y mira que era medio tonto, pero me parecía el más mono jajaja (y era un gatete en Lyoko, que sumaba puntos) y era el gracioso XD y cuidado, que tocaba en una banda y montaba en skate, eso lo hace kakkoii, ¿no? XD y era el único sin novia predestinada XDD y sí, el perro daba MUCHO cringe. Era feo con ganas, madre mía. Es que te entraban ganas de apagar la luz para no verlo 🤣🤣

Por cierto, Codigo Lyoko me la he vuelto a ver hace poco enterita (en youtube de hecho, y luego la subieron a Netflix) jajaja me dio la nostalgia y haya que fuimos y madre del amor hermoso, es mejor de lo que recordaba. Tiene cada cosa que hace que te rías quieras o no, y el doblaje (yo la vi en castellano) lo mejora todo XD tiene cada puntazo, no sé si es malo o bueno o de lo malo que es es bueno pero no tiene precio. Altamente recomendado XD Y sí, sé que tiene un live action que supuestamente me iba a ver tras terminar la de animación, pero aún no he encontrado el valor ni la fuerza mental para hacerlo XD

(En mi pueblo hay una tienda llamada Impacto y cada vez que la veo me acuerdo de Ulrich jajajaja)

Ay, Tai y Matt tenían un rollo curioso jajaja (otros chrushes míos, los coleccionaba por lo visto XD). El típico prota entusiasta y positivo y su amigo cool medio emo, nunca defrauda <3 y su hermano pequeño era super monoso, me daba todo la ternura. Y fangirleaba con los digimons tipo ángel jajaja

¡Pero, claro que las recuerdo! Aunque Gárgolas no la vi mucho la verdad, capitulillos sueltos aquí y allá u.u ¡pero especialmente Pesadillas y el Club de Medianoche, que era de un estilo parecido, me encantaban! Hace poco mi hermana y yo estábamos rememorándolas y viendo de que nos acordábamos y nos entró tal nostalgia que nos las volvimos a ver XDD y oye, para los años que tienen no están mal, son entretenidas 🤣🤣 A veces recuerdas cosas de la infancia mejor de lo que eran y te defraudas un poquito cuando vuelves a verlas/probarlas, pero la verdad es que nos gustó. Son series infantiles claro, pero no defraudó ;) la de Pesadillas creo que está ahora en Netflix, por cierto :3

i stan so hard your lastest post about yumi and ulrich's relationship

when i was first getting into this fandom a couple months ago i was pretty surprised by the lack of good fic i could find for this pairing. either they were ridiculously lovey-dovey or they were at each other’s throats, and neither of those are true. a lot of people seem to be under the impression that they fight all the time, and that’s wild, cause from what ive seen i think the exact opposite. out of the 95 episodes or whatever, they argue in 6 of them, maybe. the other 95% of the time, they’re totally cool and hanging out. like i rewatched a handful of eps earlier today, and you know what yumi and ulrich were doing? chilling against the wall before class while yumi vented to ulrich about her parents. smiling at each other in jeremie’s room after ulrich expressed excitement about exploring sector 5 and yumi chimed in that she would go with him. you know, talking and getting along and enjoying each other’s company, like people who talk and get along and enjoy each other’s company.

not saying they dont need to work on their communication skills (p much all the kids do), but its definitely not as bad as some make it out to be. my favorite example is when yumi’s upset about her parents fighting. she won’t say what’s wrong and ulrich tries to talk to her about it and she snaps at him to leave her alone, but he doesn’t get mad or take her words personally or anything. he backs off and gives her space and tries talking to her again later once she’s calmed down some and this time she’s more willing to talk, like honestly that’s A+ communication. the only thing they honestly struggle to talk about is romance, and it’s not all that bad since they do actually TRY to talk about those feelings before they’re interrupted like 10 times. it’s not like they’re both unwilling to talk or will let one push the other away. ulrich kind of puts it best when yumi tells him to leave her alone to the cold: “You can’t get rid of me that easily.”

i think some people also forget that these characters are children?? like that happens in so many other fandoms too; child characters are held to the same standards as adult characters so they get villified or demonized for acting immature and making mistakes that irl children their age make. that drove me up a wall in the gravity falls fandom. and it happens in the miraculous ladybug fandom now especially to marinette’s character. their actions aren’t right, yeah, but they learn from their mistakes and they’re not going to be immature like that forever. marinette’s not gonna be 18 with posters of adrien up on her walls acting hotheaded and petty to every girl that shows interest in “her adrien.” she’s not. cause she’s gonna grow up. the same thing applies to every kid on code lyoko: ulrich, yumi, odd, jeremie, aelita. the dumb things they say and do they’re not going to do when they’re older, and you already see some of that maturity setting in by the last season, especially for ulrich, who’s learned to keep his jealousy to himself.

i remember being in middle school. if i met middle school me now i’d probably want to punch her in the face. i wouldnt because she’s still growing up and i forgive her, but buddy. i was so obnoxious. its something my boyfriend and i laugh about now. maybe its because i am an adult and i can look back at my childhood, but there’s something endearing about all the childish mistakes the lyoko kids make because you know its not going to last. you know they’re going to grow up and leave all the childish stuff behind, for better and for worse, because as stupid and petty as they behaved sometimes they also had sock races down the hallways and played with paper balls in the library and all this other fun stuff. and i really think that’s what the show’s trying to hit on the most, all the time, because of the last scene we get of the kids talking to jim, where the dialogue’s alluding to shutting the supercomputer down being like the transition from childhood to adulthood. 

ulrich and yumi are growing up. their relationship is built on a solid foundation of deep friendship that has stood the test of some of the most bumpy years of a person’s life. they genuinely enjoy each other and get along well together. they snark and banter and bicker and its fun! its fun to watch and you can tell they’re having fun. they’re always challenging each other to improve and keep up physically and emotionally, on and off the martial arts mat. they’re great apart and together, and if they were to get romantically together in the near future as the show seems to suggest then i dont think much would change. their relationship would be as solid as their good friendship if not more so since all the tension from the uncertainty of their feelings would be gone and they’d be more comfortable talking about those feelings. they’ve already proven in the past they can deal with conflict and are willing to work to keep their friendship. a romantic relationship is no different. you’re just adding smooches to your high-fives.
