“Quilting” or “stitching” is a powerful #violinpractice🎻 #practiceroom #practiceroutine I use when passages seem intimidating at first glance. The concept is simple…start with small groups and stitch them together into larger and larger groups until the entire passage is easy. Here’s an example of this #violinpractice in #spanishdance by #ukrainiancomposer #myroslavskoryk (mm 44-50) 5 videos: 1) One measure at a time - repeat each measure several times (I repeat 3 times in this video for brevity; however in a real #violinpractise session it will likely be a lot more) ~swipe left~ 2) Two measure groups overlapping (1+2, 2+3, 3+4, etc.) ~swipe left~ 3) Three measure groups overlapping (1+2+3, 3+4+5, 5+6+7, etc) ~swipe left~ 4) performance version - the practice process can be extended to create larger groups by I find if three measure at a time becomes easy I can usually play the entire passage easily. ~swipe left~ 5) Photo of mm 44-50. I found this cool #commemorativestamp honoring the #150thbirthday of #ukrainiancomposer #mykolalysenko the founder of #ukrainianclassicalmusic #lysenko composed music for piano, voice, and chamber music, but is perhaps best known as an #operacomposer His most famous work is the #opera #tarasbulba the opening melody of which is printed on this #postagestamp This opera, which is about a #ukrainiancossack rebellion in the 17th century was beloved by none other than #petertchaikovsky who knew and admired Lysenko. #violinpractice🎻 #doublestops thirds practice. I find in extremely helpful to practice the “embedded #perfect4th “ between each consecutive third in the same position. Dropping the second finger first creates the perfect 4th - then add the pinky to complete the third. Lift the pinky and listen for the perfect 4th again before lifting the 2nd finger. Practicing some challenging shifting passages by omitting the notes before each shift. This keeps my hand relaxed and trains the shifts to be rhythmically accurate. The key is when omitting the notes, play the passage as if it had been composed with rests. Then adding the omitted notes is easy and my hand is relaxed and stable for the octaves at the top of each of these runs.
