Golden Mountain Snippet/Analysis
Pspspspsps may I offer you a tiny piece from Golden Mountain in this trying time? It's secretly a v important scene but there's no way I can explain in-story how important it is.
Me being a total nerd under the cut!
He pulled his hair back from his face to reveal a delicate cuff earring curled around his ear. She couldn’t make out too many details in the dim light, but guessed it was silver, with tiny studs of some precious gemstone set in it. She couldn’t imagine how long it must have taken, fiddling with all those tiny stones.
“Usually there’s a chain on it,” he said, letting his hair fall back into place, “but I don’t want to risk it getting caught and ripped out while I’m fighting.”
“It’s beautiful.”
He grinned at her again. “Of course it is. I made it, after all.”
Okay so in this scene Riaglin and Ty are talking around the campfire, one of their first interactions that isn't deliberately hostile. It's right after they meet the Tracker for the first time, and they're having a tentative conversation about life in the mountains. Riaglin is telling her about his craft, jewelsmithing, and shows her this cuff earring.
But it is SO important when Riaglin shows her this earring. Because, in the mountains, there are tiers of intimacy when it comes to jewelry. Least intimate would be rings and bracelets (since most dwarves don't wear these often), followed by necklaces and any sort of headpiece, followed by earrings and, finally, the most intimate and meaningful gift, beard rings.
Earrings are so intimate because almost no one else sees them. Long hair tends to hide them from view. So earrings are often very personal, deeply connected to craftsman and recipient, which is made 100 times worse when you've made earrings for yourself (as Riaglin has). Essentially, he's created a piece that no one else would ever be expected to see.
But he shows Ty. Right at the beginning, essentially right after saving her life, when they're leaning toward trust but not fully there yet. He does the dwarf equivalent of letting her read his damn diary. And it's SO important because we finally see Riaglin extending an olive branch, making up his mind to play nice. But there's no way I can smoothly fit it into the narrative, so now I'm just telling y'all instead.
Anyway, just a fun little piece of worldbuilding!

Last Line Tag
I was tagged by @crystallized-ink! Thank you!
Here's the latest line from Golden Mountain:
“Sorry,” [Ty] murmured, returning her attention to the knot of bandages in front of her.
“It’s fine,” Kaylin replied, and gently tipped herself back until her shoulders were leaning against Ty’s hips. “It just stings. It’ll pass.”
She must’ve thought Ty was apologizing for the pain. Quietly, she breathed a sigh of relief that she’d gone unnoticed.
Soft Kaylin and Ty? In my post-fight recovery? It's more likely than you think.
Tagging, with no pressure, @thewritingace, @surroundedbypearls, @pretend-im-normal, and @chazzawrites! And, of course, anyone who'd like to play!

Here's Ty! It's hard to get her robes in most picrews, but I think this one had some options that fit, which was nice! She's so much happier by the end, even after everything, bless her.

Character board: Tybarian “Ty” Pherenice
Role: Mage
From: The City of Spires
Sexuality: Bisexual
Gender: Female
Quote: “You’re putting a lot of faith in the idea that you know what I’m capable of.”
As the mage of the Chosen, Ty’s heard every insult that can be thrown her way about how she’s a coward and will hide at the first sign of trouble. She might be scared, but she’s ready to see this thing through to the end, if for no other reason than to wipe that smug look off of Riaglin’s face and prove to Kaylin she’s a warrior, too.

100 Days of Writing: Day Twenty-Two
Tell us about a scene you’re most looking forward to writing in your current project.
Warning! Spoilers for Golden Mountain ahead!
I'm really looking forward to writing the scene where Ty kills the Blackened Spire. There's a great moment where he goes from smug confidence to this ice-cold realization that this is the end, and she's actually going to kill him. The way they interact in that scene, between her resignation to the task and the fact that he's almost proud of her for doing this makes for a very interesting dynamic. Their relationship is very interesting in general, but this scene really excites me!
This post is for @the-wip-project's 100 days of writing challenge!

11, 14, 15 for whoever you’d like!! - crystallized-ink
11. If you had to go on vacation together, where would you go?
Ty: *looks at Riaglin* I’ve... never been on vacation. Have you?
Riaglin: *laughs nervously* No.
Ty: Okay. Tough question, then. Are there any places you would want to see?
Riaglin: The City of Spires?
Ty: *laughs* Besides that. It’s not a vacation for both of us if I live there. You didn’t hear me mention the City of Stone.
Riaglin: But that’s where I’d want to go. If you’re gonna throw that out, I guess I’ve never really been south. To the beach?
Ty: The beach might be nice. When we were south, we were a little busy, after all.
Riaglin: You mean when we were trying not to die to the Darkwood?
Ty: That was what I was thinking of.
Riaglin: We were stuck in the forest, too. Sort of southeast, not south.
Ty: Plus, we all hated each other.
Riaglin: *laughs* True. South it is.
14. How well would you do robbing a bank together?
Lifrai: Why would I ever rob a bank? As elven royalty, I do not want for money.
Airathron: But imagine you did. I think we’d be great at robbing banks.
Lifrai: I disagree. I have no knowledge of such things, and neither do you. We have no advantages in such a situation.
Airathron: Don’t be stupid. You’re smart, and I’m stealthy. We’d be in and out and no one would be the wiser.
Lifrai: Being smart will not make up for my lack of information. Where would one even begin with planning to rob a bank?
Airathron: You're impossible. I should’ve been paired with Ty for this question.
Lifrai: *teasing? elf emotions are hard* I see. You would rather rob a bank with Ty than with me?
Airathron: *definitely teasing* You’re making it unnecessarily difficult, so...
*the discussion dissolves into good-natured bickering*
15. If you could only say one more thing to one another, what would it be?
Riaglin: Well...
Kaylin: I guess there’s no harm in answering, right? We never got a chance to say our goodbyes.
Riaglin: Fine. I’d want to tell you that I’m grateful for everything you’ve done for me. I’m a better person because of you, and I’d want to let you know. I’d tell you to be at peace and to not have too much fun without me.
Kaylin: *smiles, nudges him with her knee* That’s sweet.
Riaglin: *embarrassed* Whatever. It’s your turn.
Kaylin: I’d want to tell you how proud of you I was. That I’d noticed all the changes, all the progress you’d made. I’d thank you for being my friend, wish you well, and pray for your happiness.
Riaglin: ...We’re such saps.
Kaylin: Nothing wrong with that. One of us is hypothetically dying, after all.

You reblogged the post about random asks and I saw it, so what are your OCs favorite colors? And why if they have a reason?
Hello! Thank you so much, I always welcome random asks!
Kaylin's favorite color is yellow; it reminds her of sunflowers and honey and her favorite time of year. It's also a color she associates heavily with her god, Elras.
Airathron's favorite color is orange. One of their fondest memories is splitting a tangerine with Morvira while they were on a hunt. Plus, it's a color that looks good on them.
Lifrai's favorite color is green. It's the color of life, of thriving things, and it reminds him of home.
Riaglin's favorite color is red, one of the most common colors of garnet. It's reminiscent of home, but more importantly it's his clan's color, so it's the connection to his family that makes it special.
Ty's favorite color is cream. It's the color of parchment, and it's a nice, neutral color. It also pairs nicely with her regular blue robes.

You've been visited by the random OC question fairy! :D ~☆
What is your character's energy level? Are they more of a hummingbird or a sloth? How does this disposition affect their actions and relationships with others?
Kaylin is a fairly high-energy person. She always wants to go somewhere and do something, whatever it may be. Because of this, she has trouble maintaining close friendships with people, but she’s found a few that either don’t mind her constant coming and going or are willing to tag along every once in a while. She has trouble settling down in one place for too long. For low-energy friends, your best bet is to get her a good, high-energy activity that she can do next to you, like training her sword skills or doing some smithing.
Ty is low-energy. Honestly, she could spend all day curled up on the sofa with a book and never feel the need to do anything else. For the right person, she’ll happily get up and do something with them, but this is the exception, not the rule. This can make it hard to stay friends with her; you might like chatting with her by the fire, but get frustrated when that’s all the two of you ever do. However, you might be able to tempt her out of the library with the promise of travel, something she’s becoming more fond of with time.
Airathron has a medium energy level. People think that they’ll be very high-energy at first, but the thing to remember is that Airathron is a hunter. They spend a lot of time slowly tracking, lying in wait, etc. This makes them a great companion because they’re pretty much down for whatever you want to do. Fun outing to the city? Sure. Lazy day on the beach? Awesome. Going on a nature hike? Sounds good to them! They’re super adaptive, which means they’re a great friend for anyone.
Lifrai is low-energy. He’s a very relaxed sort of person, and he doesn’t need a lot of things to do on a given day. A nice stroll by the beach is about all he needs, other than that he’s ready to sit down with his royal duties. This makes him a great heir to the elven throne since he’s content to focus entirely on his duties for hours at a time, but he’s a tough friend to have since his nature means you’ll rarely be the first thing on his mind.
Riaglin is shockingly high-energy. He’s used to constantly doing heavy manual labor in the forges, the mines, etc. and if he doesn’t get that level of activity, he might actually go insane. This is part of the reason he keeps picking fights; hours on horseback are not going to tire him out enough to keep him out of trouble. However, he’s also a surprisingly good match for a low-energy person. If you want to sit in the corner of his forge and draw up new designs or read a book or chat with him while his metal heats, that’s fine by him! He might actually enjoy the company.

100 Days of Writing: Day Seventeen
Think about an interview question for your main character/s and then write down what they don't say. What secrets do they keep? What do they lie about?
The question: What is your greatest fear? What keeps you up at night?
What they didn't say:
Riaglin: My pride makes me selfish. I know that, and sometimes I hate it. But I lie awake at night, and I worry that that's gonna get someone hurt. That I'll do something selfish when I could've saved somebody. I don't think I will, I think these people make me a better person like that, but it's something to worry about.
Kaylin: My family will die. They may have already. They could be dead, because I was out here and wasn't there to protect them. I might have failed them already.
Ty: Maybe everything bad that's happened to me is my fault. If I'd just tried harder, been better, worked at it more, maybe none of those things would have happened. What if it all comes back to me? What if, in the end, I'm just not enough?
Lifrai: I cannot allow my sister to face this task. I would sooner let the Corrupted Arcane rule this world than let her face them. Perhaps that makes me a bad person, or a bad ruler, but it is the truth. I have spent too many waking nights imagining her in my place. I cannot see that nightmare come to fruition.
Airathron: I'm weak. Morvira was better than me, she always has been. The only reason I was Chosen is because she went mad. If she'd been Chosen, would I have taken the path to madness? Would I have been the one taken by the Tracker? Worse yet, even if I succeed, I could still follow in her footsteps.

#3 and #9 for OCs that are friends!
3. Character A, what do you love most about Character B?
Kaylin: I admire many things about Airathron, including their skill, but I love most their ability to focus on what needs to be done. Putting your emotions aside in favor of the task at hand isn't easy. Especially when the task is life-or-death.
Airathron: *joking* What, just those two things?
Kaylin: *joking back* Well, if I listed everything, I'd never stop, and Ty and Lifrai wouldn't get their turn.
Airathron: You'd have to list everything you know about me, which would take a while... Alright, I'll let you off the hook this time.
Kaylin: *laughs* Gee, thanks.
9. How well would you work together on a deserted island?
Lifrai: I could hardly think of a better pair for such a situation.
Ty: Any pair with Airathron in it would do well. But if we assume they can't go, then it would be you and I.
Lifrai: Between the two of us, we could likely escape the island.
Ty: I think the point is that we'd be trapped somehow, but if we weren't we wouldn't have to stick around. Even if we were, though, we'd do well.
Lifrai: We would have a lovely little settlement. Between your magic and my gift with plants, we'd certainly have an advantage.
Ty: So, to answer your question, we'd do quite well.

Golden Mountain Incorrect Quotes
Gotten here
Kaylin: Are we really going to let Airathron keep Lifrai?
Ty: We kept Riaglin.
Ty: If you took a shot for every time you made a bad decision, how drunk would you be? Kaylin: Maybe a bit tipsy? Lifrai: Drunk. Riaglin: Wasted. Airathron: Dead.
Riaglin: Why isn’t the statue smirking at me? Lifrai: It isn’t smirking at anyone, they’re all just imagining it. Ty: Three of us saw it, Lifrai. How do you explain that? Lifrai: *points at Kaylin* Sleep deprivation. *points at Ty* Paranoia. *points at Airathron* Delusional personality disorder.
Kaylin, talking about Ty: Is this a friend of yours, Riaglin? Riaglin: Kind of? Not really. They're in my life and there's nothing I can do about it.
Kaylin: Riaglin isn't talking to me. Ty: Enjoy it while it lasts.
Ty: What’s your favorite color? Lifrai: Stop asking stupid questions. Ask me something logical and mature. Ty: How many moles of sodium bicarbonate are needed to neutralize 0.8ml of sulfuric acid at STP? Lifrai: My favorite color is pink.
Airathron: No, this is not a mess. You know what I consider a mess? Kaylin: Your life? Airathron: I- well yes, but-
Ty: This is a very powerful artifact. You’d be messing with some forces we don’t fully understand. Riaglin: That sounds like a dare to me. Ty: Oh my god.

100 Days of Writing: Day Four
Thinking back to the motivation(s) you defined yesterday, what is your character’s goal (or goals) and what conflict(s) prevents them from getting to that?
Similar to motivations, all of my characters share a common goal: to save the world by defeating the Corrupted Arcane. Clear conflict: the Corrupted Arcane don't want to be defeated and will fight back. How rude.
Outside of that, though, some characters have other, more complex goals, or other conflicts that prevent them from reaching this goal.
Kaylin, for example, has the goal of bringing the Chosen together as a unit. This ties into her goal of beating the Corrupted Arcane; she doesn't think they'll ever be victorious if they can't put their differences aside. However, the Chosen have old grudges and pre-formed biases that keep them from working together. Thus, the conflict arises. Kaylin has to break down these biases and expose them for being unfair.
Airathron has an additional conflict, since they knew the Tracker personally, and were friends with her. Though they know the Tracker is not their friend, they still have some hesitations. After all, they're looking into familiar eyes, remembering years of friendly competition and late-night talks. They know that Morvira is dead, but a part of them just can't help but see her in the Tracker.
Ty has a conflict between doing what she feels is right and what is lawful. To kill the Blackened Spire would mean stealing his magic for her own, which is beyond illegal (and morally wrong). However, the most effective way to her goal is to make sure he never comes back. As such, we get to see an interesting twist of her morals through the story as she struggles with this conflict.
Riaglin has a conflict between pride and fear. Half of him would rather run far, far away from this fight and never face the Corrupted Arcane (especially the Carven Skull) while the other half refuses to admit defeat. His pride keeps him from reaching out for comfort or companionship, so he struggles on his own a lot if someone doesn't reach out to him first. He'll have to learn to put his pride aside and find some people he trusts.
There's more, I'm sure, but this is what immediately comes to mind!

100 Days of Writing: Day 3
What's your character's motivation? What motivates them to act like they do?
I'll break it down for my main heroes!
All of the Chosen have an extrinsic motivation of duty. They've been selected to fill a purpose, to protect, so they are motivated to do so. Even Kaylin is motivated by duty, even though she isn't Chosen, as she's been sent here by the god Elras to make sure the Chosen can succeed. Because of this, their intrinsic motivations are more interesting.
(Read more because the post is pretty long. Whoops.)
Airathron's intrinsic motivation is to be the best, and more importantly, to be recognized as such. This means they aren't always very concerned with the people around them; they're more focused on surpassing them than helping them. Thus, they tend to act in a way that seems self-centered and selfish, and have a hard time making friends. The one friend they had, who was very similar, has succumbed to the call of tracking.
Riaglin also is motivated to be the best, but for a different reason. For Riaglin, he sees this as deeply tied to his duty. As the first Chosen of his clan, he feels the need to represent them well, and the only way he can think to do that is to be the best Chosen that the City of Stone has ever sent out. Side note: at home, this manifests itself as simple pride. This is, ironically, how he ends up being Chosen in the first place; his desire to be the best overrules his fear of being Chosen.
Ty is motivated by a need to protect her loved ones. As such, she will stop at nothing to do what she thinks needs to be done, even if it requires deep personal sacrifice. This desire to protect extends to the entire City of Spires, thus, she will never abandon her quest, no matter what she goes through to achieve her goals. As she warms to the rest of the Chosen, they will become something she wants to protect, too. Even though she has her doubts and fears, this goal will motivate her to continue to push forward through the toughest conditions.
Kaylin is also motivated by a need to protect, but also by a desire to make her god proud. In Kaylin's eyes, she has been selected by Elras, since she doesn't know she is his only follower. As such, she will do justice to the attention and guidance she receives from him by making him proud in all areas of her life. She has been on quests for Elras before, and each time strives to make him proud (something she succeeds in easily). Elras's pride means everything to Kaylin, especially since he's given her so much. She can only think to repay that kindness in one way.
Lifrai is motivated by a need to restore his reputation. Lifrai is the heir to the throne of the City of Arches. However, as a child, he exhibited no signs of being able to wield magic, despite the fact that both his parents could. This caused a stir among the nobles, and as such he has been forced to defend his honor and right to take the throne. Being Chosen is his chance to prove once and for all that he deserves the title he was born into.
So, yeah! I clearly talked way too long, but I really liked this prompt, and it was an interesting insight into my characters' heads that I hadn't thought about before! Maybe I'll do a second one for my villains.
This post is for @the-wip-project's 100 days of writing. If you'd like to participate, it's not too late to start!
